It reminds me of when I bought a book of English folklore tales thinking "I can read these to my son, fairytales are totally kid friendly" but as I read them, I noticed they all involved death, disembowelment, child snatching, and a number of numerous terrors that are definitely NOT child friendly! @@jamesgarlick4573 Sure they are! Those folk lores were originally MADE for children! Parents told those stories to their kids all the time! They were originally created to be stories of warning to children, so they don't do stupid things that would get them killed. Like "don't play in the river, or the Kappa will lure you in, drag you under and drown you then eat your bloated body!" Or, "Don't wander into the wods alone. A werewolf could come up and eat you whole, or Baba Yaga will curse you and the entire family! Or even worse, the hag will lure you into her hut and cook you alive to eat!" So ago ahead and read them to your kid. It'll put the fear of god in them and make them behave. Or, it'll enchant them with all the different lore and scary gore and make them want to study mythology when they're older. Don't limit what you read to your kid just because the stories are a little darker than Disney or Pixar. You'd actually give them something to brag about whrn they're in middle school or high school. :)

Matt Mercer is one of the perfect examples of how getting into character as the DM makes ALL the difference in creating immersion in the story. His myriad of of voices and personalities are the glue that hold the world together and make it, at least during certain moments, feel more than just a game. He's good at what he does :)
I agree that he does a great job, burt he also has 7 professional actors around him that are trained to respond to fictitious setting and characters. There are plenty of players that would react to Matt with a bored stare waiting to roll dice and kills stuff.
Jeffrey Bomba that’s more of a knock to those theoretical players, than Matt... he’s pretty much the best you could ask for, and it’s not up to the DM to make the players good lol... they have LOTS of jobs, but the players being good players is not one of them
He and Vox Machina improvise such a tremendous story together--epic fantasy, action, comedy, romance, horror--that surpasses nearly every scripted TV show in the last 5 years--with zero effects, no high-end production costs, nothing but their imaginations and ours... As good as the others are, though, Matt is the heart of all this. While some DMs are no doubt equal to or better than him in specific skills, he is very good at anything with such a quick, fantastic imagination to tie it all together that I think he must be one of the best 4-5 DMs on the planet
@@jeffreybomba those people wouldn't be part of a game like mats. it's clear his games a very RP and narrative heavy so most who just wanna roll dice would avoid his games which is a big loss to them in my personal opinion
Matt is a good dm in a certain setting and with certain players personally I think he is somthing I aspire to but not all my parties would appreciate it quite as much as they themselves are not actors and some struggle with actual immersion side of things, he is also a lot les tactical then many DMs and does not allow his combatant NPC’s to properly utilize the environment or use tactics fully in combat and therefore does not force his players to think more tactically. As he himself states he is great at what he does but there are many many different ways to be a great DM.

I love when Travis makes an attack roll that hits an enemy, then rolls another attack that is higher than the first and still waits for Matt to say that the attack hits before continuing. It makes me happy that the players are so invested in the game and just enjoying what’s happening and that Matt is great at being the glue that holds it all together while also enjoying his role.
Yeah, even as someone who has never DM'd the way some players just roll a die and say "That hits" without saying the number is a little frustrating. It shows a lot of respect to the DM to consistently announce your rolls even if you know the outcome.
@@PiroMunkie Liam does that quite a bit and it's slightly annoying, as well as when he just bumrushes his turn declaring 150 different things amidst the chaos. I'm pretty sure Matt isn't even listening on half of them and just goes with it, Liam can fly, teleport, do whatever he wants anyway. No hate, love them all, just pointing out something that kinda stands out a bit.

+Dominic “Danros79Arn” Stangl I had a recent fight in a 3.5 campaign with my gestalt ninja/druid that did 1100 damage in a single attack(1300-200Dr) against a Demi-god. I was imbued with power from my dying deity at the time.
I'm currently running a 5e game with a champion fighter 6 / barbarian 1. At level 7 the dude did like 74 damage in 1 turn against my poor boss half-dragon who was left with less than half HP afterwards.
#Luciano, if you have problems, fudge a few rolls on the fly... It's your right as DM to do so, since it IS your world they're playing in (read "invading" if it makes you feel better).
my level 12 paladin is crazy on damage, he's managed to get a 30 in str and now duel wields 2 holy avengers (high magic game) he can reliably do 200 radiant damage with smites, on top of the three strikes with the greatswords. close to or over 300 damage a round!

I just started about a month and a half ago, even though I've heard great things over the years about it all, I wasn't prepared for how good it was actually going to be, and I'm so sad I wasn't there from the beginning. Well, I think you might be on C2 by now and already have realized that when it comes to shenanigans, no one can rival the Mighty Nein. I actually started watching C3, when I ran out of new videos I started C2 and started C1 last and through the first few videos Vox Machina seemed so serious and heroic. Of course, then you realize that even though he is a mopey, emo-teenager a lot of the time, Vax is actually cracking jokes and fooling around in a way Caleb only very rarely does. Still the Mighty Nein are way above VM when it comes to the BS they pull around their actual adventures.
Xanthas was killed using Fenthras. Thus, when Grog fetched him so Pike could cast Speak with Dead, he had to rip him out from the tree growing from his face.
@@973daydreamer They've ignored that in the past as Grog has a habit of turning skulls into jelly lol. Grog's very existence in the party would make that spell nearly useless. Rule of Cool does have its uses.

Precisely the reason that I don't like having insider knowledge as a player. If you don't take good notes or forget to read them you are bound to slip up like this. It becomes a case of the PC knowing or remembering more than the player. Pretty much treason, or whatever equivalent term you wish to employ, to members of the Slayer's Take.
Hopefully at some point I'll finally catch up to the live streams, but in the mean time, I'm with Laura Bailey on dice. The correct amount of dice any player should own is D=n+1, where D is the number of dice you should own, and n is the current number of dice you own.
You need exactly 1 D20. You can have more, of course, but you only NEED the one. Of course, you need more damage dice and for a game like Shadowrun I needed a lot of D6, but I also had to roll a lot of them sometimes. Don't get me wrong, buy as many dice as you want to, but you don't need them. I always used one D20, I had about 10 of them and I would change the one I'd use once in a while, but stuff like superstitiously not using a die because it rolled low? Never understood that.
@@dieyng You may be technically correct but aesthetics can be part of the game for people, like Matt using a very heavy metal die for boss rolls. It might just feel better to have like a red die for strength checks and a green one for dexterity saving throws. You could always use a random number generator but using dice is a thing of its own and it only makes sense that people would want to customize and assign meaning and value to arbitrary processes because in games, everything is arbitrary anyway, and having fun with the stuff you do is essentially the point of a game.

I don't think Allura's so-called experience means anything, at this point VM has more experience fighting dragons than anyone in the world and Allura's old group failed at murdering Thordak (which is why they chose to seal him away) so just pick whoever can cast the biggest nuke. Also didn't Gilmore hold his own against a dragon when the Chroma Conclave attacked? That's without a doubt the best humanoid vs dragon feat we've seen so far.
As another means of travel if there are no trees couldn't she simply planeshift out of scanlons mansion(being that it is in its own plane of existence)

Keep in mind that plane shift isn't an accurate teleport but instead general area teleportation plus that uses Scanlan's high-level spell slot as well.

Travis is just the best at this game... He stays in character. Makes decisions based on his character even when they don’t benefit him or the group. And despite Scanlans frequency of making everyone laugh I find Grogs antics to be the most genuinely hilarious stuff

Matt used the spell right, but Laura should have had advantage on her saving throw because she's a half-elf. plus, she was charmed by a creature she hostile to her, which Matt forgot to grant her and everyone else didn't think about. Nothing really controversial, just a honest mistake that can happen.

I love the progressing horror and disgust on Sam's face when he reads the dirty limericks.
Almost all of their faces are worth watching as he reads it.
It reminds me of when I bought a book of English folklore tales thinking "I can read these to my son, fairytales are totally kid friendly" but as I read them, I noticed they all involved death, disembowelment, child snatching, and a number of numerous terrors that are definitely NOT child friendly! They were originally created to be stories of warning to children, so they don't do stupid things that would get them killed. Like "don't play in the river, or the Kappa will lure you in, drag you under and drown you then eat your bloated body!"
Or, "Don't wander into the wods alone. A werewolf could come up and eat you whole, or Baba Yaga will curse you and the entire family! Or even worse, the hag will lure you into her hut and cook you alive to eat!"
So ago ahead and read them to your kid. It'll put the fear of god in them and make them behave. Or, it'll enchant them with all the different lore and scary gore and make them want to study mythology when they're older. Don't limit what you read to your kid just because the stories are a little darker than Disney or Pixar. You'd actually give them something to brag about whrn they're in middle school or high school. :)

Matt Mercer is one of the perfect examples of how getting into character as the DM makes ALL the difference in creating immersion in the story. His myriad of of voices and personalities are the glue that hold the world together and make it, at least during certain moments, feel more than just a game. He's good at what he does :)
I agree that he does a great job, burt he also has 7 professional actors around him that are trained to respond to fictitious setting and characters. There are plenty of players that would react to Matt with a bored stare waiting to roll dice and kills stuff.
Jeffrey Bomba that’s more of a knock to those theoretical players, than Matt... he’s pretty much the best you could ask for, and it’s not up to the DM to make the players good lol... they have LOTS of jobs, but the players being good players is not one of them
He and Vox Machina improvise such a tremendous story together--epic fantasy, action, comedy, romance, horror--that surpasses nearly every scripted TV show in the last 5 years--with zero effects, no high-end production costs, nothing but their imaginations and ours...
As good as the others are, though, Matt is the heart of all this. While some DMs are no doubt equal to or better than him in specific skills, he is very good at anything with such a quick, fantastic imagination to tie it all together that I think he must be one of the best 4-5 DMs on the planet

Matt is a good dm in a certain setting and with certain players personally I think he is somthing I aspire to but not all my parties would appreciate it quite as much as they themselves are not actors and some struggle with actual immersion side of things, he is also a lot les tactical then many DMs and does not allow his combatant NPC’s to properly utilize the environment or use tactics fully in combat and therefore does not force his players to think more tactically. As he himself states he is great at what he does but there are many many different ways to be a great DM.

I love when Travis makes an attack roll that hits an enemy, then rolls another attack that is higher than the first and still waits for Matt to say that the attack hits before continuing. It makes me happy that the players are so invested in the game and just enjoying what’s happening and that Matt is great at being the glue that holds it all together while also enjoying his role.
Yeah, even as someone who has never DM'd the way some players just roll a die and say "That hits" without saying the number is a little frustrating. It shows a lot of respect to the DM to consistently announce your rolls even if you know the outcome.
@@PiroMunkie Liam does that quite a bit and it's slightly annoying, as well as when he just bumrushes his turn declaring 150 different things amidst the chaos. I'm pretty sure Matt isn't even listening on half of them and just goes with it, Liam can fly, teleport, do whatever he wants anyway. No hate, love them all, just pointing out something that kinda stands out a bit.

I had a recent fight in a 3.5 campaign with my gestalt ninja/druid that did 1100 damage in a single attack(1300-200Dr) against a Demi-god. I was imbued with power from my dying deity at the time.
I'm currently running a 5e game with a champion fighter 6 / barbarian 1. At level 7 the dude did like 74 damage in 1 turn against my poor boss half-dragon who was left with less than half HP afterwards.
#Luciano, if you have problems, fudge a few rolls on the fly... It's your right as DM to do so, since it IS your world they're playing in (read "invading" if it makes you feel better).
my level 12 paladin is crazy on damage, he's managed to get a 30 in str and now duel wields 2 holy avengers (high magic game) he can reliably do 200 radiant damage with smites, on top of the three strikes with the greatswords. close to or over 300 damage a round!

I just started about a month and a half ago, even though I've heard great things over the years about it all, I wasn't prepared for how good it was actually going to be, and I'm so sad I wasn't there from the beginning. I actually started watching C3, when I ran out of new videos I started C2 and started C1 last and through the first few videos Vox Machina seemed so serious and heroic. Of course, then you realize that even though he is a mopey, emo-teenager a lot of the time, Vax is actually cracking jokes and fooling around in a way Caleb only very rarely does.
Still the Mighty Nein are way above VM when it comes to the BS they pull around their actual adventures.

I do play the drawn out planning parts at 2x, mostly to catch up faster but also because there’s more pauses during those points so it’s still easy to understand.

Feels like it's been popping up more and more in the last few episodes. You need exactly 1 D20. You can have more, of course, but you only NEED the one.
Of course, you need more damage dice and for a game like Shadowrun I needed a lot of D6, but I also had to roll a lot of them sometimes.
Don't get me wrong, buy as many dice as you want to, but you don't need them. I always used one D20, I had about 10 of them and I would change the one I'd use once in a while, but stuff like superstitiously not using a die because it rolled low? Never understood that.
@@dieyng You may be technically correct but aesthetics can be part of the game for people, like Matt using a very heavy metal die for boss rolls. It might just feel better to have like a red die for strength checks and a green one for dexterity saving throws. You could always use a random number generator but using dice is a thing of its own and it only makes sense that people would want to customize and assign meaning and value to arbitrary processes because in games, everything is arbitrary anyway, and having fun with the stuff you do is essentially the point of a game.

I don't think Allura's so-called experience means anything, at this point VM has more experience fighting dragons than anyone in the world and Allura's old group failed at murdering Thordak (which is why they chose to seal him away) so just pick whoever can cast the biggest nuke. Also didn't Gilmore hold his own against a dragon when the Chroma Conclave attacked? That's without a doubt the best humanoid vs dragon feat we've seen so far.

Keep in mind that plane shift isn't an accurate teleport but instead general area teleportation plus that uses Scanlan's high-level spell slot as well.
Also allura could have bamfed them minus one, with the gatestone, then the person with the gatestone joins a minute later.

Travis is just the best at this game...
He stays in character. Makes decisions based on his character even when they don’t benefit him or the group. And despite Scanlans frequency of making everyone laugh I find Grogs antics to be the most genuinely hilarious stuff
