Sam's ability to take a new character and make the entire party hate him in the most comical way, and then immediately make them all feel so bad for him that they do a complete 180 is beyond amazing
I loved the connection Laura drew between Vex finding out about Scanlan's drug problem to her hiding the cards from Grog. Her realization that their relationship with Scanlan fell apart due to lack of openness and trust and finding a way to right that wrong with Grog was such an endearing and emotionally mature moment of growth for Vex. Bravo to Laura for finding that storyline tether.
Not to mention, the look she shared with her husband was "I really fucked up I'm sorry" have a feeling a few conversations happened on the car ride home the night she took them from grog.
Really loved the small thing Percy did at the end of episode 85 that was similar. Percy is so used to lying to get himself away from uncomfortable situations and before they resurrected Scanlan, Grog asked if there were any brothels in Whitestone, on a history check he did know of one but didn’t tell Grog. After Scanlan departed he shared that information with him and apologized for his approach to things with him.
I know I'm super late to the party, but it's also fascinating that Vax almost immediately recognized that as the problem. The minute Scanlan left the room, Vax sent straight to "I don't want any more of this to build, let's put our hearts on our sleeves." And ironically, Vex is the first one to be upset by this, saying they already talk too much, despite her being quick to do as Vax suggested not long after.
@@philbattiste9649maybe im reading into this but i love that reaction from vex. Shes selfish but she cares, when met with an uncomfortable situation she lashed out, but when given a moment to reflect she approached grog and apologized. Maybe not an emotionally mature moment, but very real.
Of course he did, he has taken certain traits of every party member and made them into one character (wanting to be centre of attention, has a giant fighting buddy, same buddy is a hulking giant who unlike grog can read and write, wants his friend to be silent and not talk about it’s feeling, was raised by tutors, comes from wealth, is pompous, really into books and builds things that Percy can’t understand, has daddy issues... the list goes on)
This character is ironically like a character I have actually played. Who sadly didn’t last very long. I happened to be playing in a bit of a toxic group.
@@nightflame69 Dam feelsbad man. It happens. I have been playing with the same group for 7 years now. Just find those you can stick with for the long haul.
Things you need to join Vox Machina: 1. Daddy issues 2. the hatred of the elderly 3. trouble comprehending doors and door-like contraptions 4. money...or a magic item that will go unnoticed if stolen
My favourite things about Sam in this is his little subtle jabs that Tary makes without knowledge but Sam knowing how much this will irk the party; Vex is a little elf girl, Percy won't understand the complexities of a golem and, my personal favourite, Doty being a huge lumbering tank WHO CAN WRITE AND READ unlike our lovely illerate Grog. Sam is, without a doubt, the best character performer and so intricate in his storytelling, he's just too good, I'm in awe 🧡
And I love the fact that the party is initially annoyed with him for having a generally happy life and stable upbringing. "A good education? You suck. Recourses available whenever he needed them? This guy's a jerk. Both your parents are alive? Screw you man." He's triggering the "I'm better because my life is harder" complex and it's such a delightful cringy train wreck.
@@averagegirl7113 Eh I'm not sure its that, I think its cuz Tarry tries to present himself as like, a seasoned adventurer, or at least a go getter with experience, when he has so obviously lived the sheltered life. His ego sort of feels unearned.
I love love love Taryon talking about his best friend Doty, playing as little figures with him, living through fiction books as a child - and Matt just sat there, his poker face somehow different in a way I can't quite grasp 😂
Observations were already made about Taryon being a combination of VM to annoy them, with Doty being a literate Grog, but in that moment I realized Sam was also riffing on Matt xD
Sam: “Friends call me Tary, Jumbo” Travis: “Tary Jumbo!” I love how fast Travis was with this response 😂 I’m looking forward to the rest of this episode
Travis is brilliant in his roleplay of a simpleton. I think a lot of people don’t appreciate how hard that actually is to do and it not be annoying. He’s possibly the best performer in the group.
To be honest, after I watched and stopped around this same point before finally DM’ing my own game and coming back now. Not only am I so impressed with his performance as Grog, Marishia’s performance as Keyleth is top-tier. She kept it up despite all the hate. If you don’t believe me, watch how fast she picks up things like “boulder, paper, shears” and flips that into a sincere-sounding character expression. Or that dust bowl ad Sam had them read and she’s the only one that, despite complaining, picked it up ultra fast, reading as she went IN ACCENT!
My reaction was far less charitable. Another "How dare you?" from Vex was what I was feeling. But it definitely fits the character and was a nice touch.
it wrinkles my brain that the same man who played a character that helped defeat Thordak is playing a character who didn't, but is taking credit for it - and yet is such a good actor, it feels like an offense 🙃
The entire right table's reactions were amazing. Laura with the quick angry look. Travis with his double take. Liam with his slow look and wording "Really?" Perfection
Absolutely accurate description. Until that moment I was giving Jarret the benefit of the doubt. Got to steal to eat, got to eat to live and all that. I'm actually a little disappointed in him.
Percy: "I haven't been on a ship sinc-- Oh, my, yeah..." The last time he was on a ship was after he escaped Whitestone when he threw himself into the river and thought Cassandra was killed. He awoke on a ship after and drifted for a while in whatever traumatic state he was in. Probably not the most pleasant of memories. Then after when he says he isn't feeling great about taking an airship and would rather a boat its because the airship appreciation was something he shared with Scanlan and given the recent events he'd rather a boat than an airship because it just wouldn't be the same without him. =\
I appreciate Grog looking out for the meat man when Keyleth wanted to scry on him. It shows Grog listened to his friend when the others didn't understand him as much
Dont forget last episode grog asked percy about sending guards or someone to follow scanlan and kaylee making sure they alright and percy talked him out of it saying not sure if scanlan would like that so it kinda of shows that they all have good intentions but none of them really know what to do about it..
He did the exact same shit last episode... he literally asks Percy to send someone to follow Scanlan immediately after Scanlan walks out. It's nice that Grog also came to the right conclusion after Percy gently started him down that path, yes.
@@Kenar.E It’s a play on the stereotypical cocky rich kid who calls themself a self starter as if they built themselves up from the ground up when in reality they had a healthy headstart from their families money and connections.
I love that Grog is just the best friend even when Scanlan isn't around, quite rightfully objecting to them intending to incredibly disrespectfully invade his privacy on a whim when he in no uncertain terms wanted some time apart from them, feeling belittled, disrespected and unwanted. Grog listens and Grog at least does his best to understand.
Sure let's call it that. Ignoring the fact that he literally asked Percy to have Scanlan followed by guards or "sneaky types" almost immediately after he left.
@@viktorstagnetti7491 Yeah emotions were running high then though, and he ultimately didn't try to actually have it done. And when ppl wanted to spy on Scanlan, he was more clearheaded. Not saying he's perfect, but is a bit better of a friend then the others were.
I think everyone else besides Pike, Scanlan, and Grog has hero complex where they think that they are always right and are responsible for everyone's wellbeing. Vax is desperate to sacrifice himself for everyone. Vex tries to micromanage everybody's actions. Keyleth thinks that she always has the moral high ground. Percy thinks he is the only one who can make smart decisions. Grog just wants a buddy to pummel people with.
Yep, I loved Grog during that whole blow up. He didn’t try to make a million excuses for never showing any interest in Scanlan’s life, he just asked for the mother’s name and apologized for being thoughtless. It was perfect.
The reason I love Sam playing a new character is that the rest of the cast gets a chance to redefine their characters through their interactions with him
There's so much to say about these last two episodes but I think my favourite thing is Matt's unrestricted joy watching the others experience Tary. You can see he's been so excited to see all this unfurl and is legit dying over Sam's character choices. Saying goodbye to Scanlan was so sad, but getting to play with a new character must be so much fun for a DM, just watch Matt's face

Thing is, Vox Machina doesn't really have *A* Leader. It depends on the circumstances. In the field it's pretty much Vax. When it comes to negotiations and diplomacy it's kind of split between Vex, Scanlan and Percy depending on if it's financial, general or high society respectively.
T Keil To be fair, everyone still disagreed with her, lol. Even on Talks Machina no-one but Laura ever actually said that. VM doesn't work if one person is designated as the "leader".

@@ClericOfPholtus I also don't understand this. Vex contributes to negotiations and planning, but no more than anyone else, and a lot of the time her suggestions have to be corrected because Laura forgets crucial details. The party doesn't have a leader, but honestly Percy was pretty much the de facto leader up until Taliesen decided to try and backstab Raishan as an incredibly foolish unilateral decision, which made him lose confidence and put Percy more in the background. The party deferred to Percy's judgement most of the time, which generally worked out well, and Vax even called him the leader a couple times. And it made sense because among the party Percy is the Brains. Vex was never the leader, and neither was Scanlan, who probably contributed to planning just a little bit more than Grog. He was just the point-man on a lot of charisma-checks, but even those are typically split between whomever is the most appropriate for the situation at hand. (Again, Percy's handled an awful lot of them because it made sense for his character.) Vex made that comment because she misses him and is mentally overcompensating because he didn't feel like he was useful or important in the group, but it doesn't mean she's actually right, because she's not. Man, how does Sam do it? He's just suddenly not Scanlan anymore. He's a completely different character who resonates completely different with Vox Machina (I laughed so hard at his tinkering talk with Percy). He's such a good actor, and as much as I'll miss Scanlan, I can't wait to see how Terry turns out as a member of the group.
For the longest time I was torn between really enjoying Scanlan/Sam, and finding him downright creepy. It wasn't until I caught the very beginnings of Campaign 2 with Nott that I was able to distinguish just how much of his performance while they play is Sam, and how much is the character he's inhabiting for the evening. Sam really is terrific. And let's not take an actor's skill for granted; everyone at the tables for CritRole are actors, but not everyone maintains character as thoroughly as some, nor as consistently. Sam is the kind of performer who I think many people confuse the lines between the performer and the character because he blurs them so thoroughly, while most of the other players slip back and forth between their true selves and their characters more often (which is fine, it's game night for a bunch of friends, but we as viewers don't know any of them well enough to recognize the difference without lengthy exposure and, frankly, effort or perhaps simply interest).
Well, Sam Riegel might just be my favorite person in the entire universe now. First the absolutely amazing downward spiral of Scanlan, and his departure scene. And then this Taryon, an absolute masterclass in character creation and acting. My every hat, proverbial or not, is off to him.
After watching this a second time, Grog is taking scanlan's absence very hard. The first time I thought he was asking the names of things because he was judging Tary, but I realized just now, that he's doing this so he doesn't lose someone else he might trust.
It's funny watching them say how much they can't stand Tary, and then they spend a long time grilling him about his past. Scanlan's departure taught them some lessons.
Scanlan actively avoided talking about his past with the group. Sam obviously decided to do the opposite with Tary. So you could argue that he was the one who learned his own lesson - Scanlan always seemed to be hiding some long rich history, one we'll probably never hear about because Sam had played his cards too close to his chest.
AnkokuEvangeline But Tary is revealing everything in direct response to what is asked. He might provide full answers, but they are still answers to questions asked.
to Bryan Woods: Remember, Vox Machina asked Scanlan questions as well, especially when the plot made it relevant (e.g. whenever Dr. Dre was around). Scanlan always brushed them off with vague non-answers. As for their very first meeting, unfortunately we weren't there for that.
Keep in mind his backstory. It's pretty freaking specifically designed to be endearing to all the characters. Sam hasn't "Learned his lesson." He's gaming them, pretty hard.
Taryon has 100% accuracy at completely misreading characters and drawing the wrong conclusions, to the point that he even thinks Keyleth is confident and cool. Actually, I'm curious how that will affect her, being the first time in her life it's happened!
Vex and Grog both saying "our leader isn't with us right now" because Scanlan would always claim to be the leader broke my goddamn heart. This arc get a lot of people talking about how none of the team cared about Scanlan and never bothered to get to know him but I honestly I don't see it that way. You can see the love they all have for him and how much they all miss him- he wasn't just their comedic relief or the slutty lil short man... he was their leader.
I never saw it that way, either. The party was so thoroughly heartbroken over his death that I nearly teared up, as well. The prank seemed like wild relief over his survival, something that would enable them to laugh together and shrug off the horror. It backfired terribly because they had no way of knowing that Scanlan wanted to move away from that careless person disrespecting anyone and anything that he had been since he kept deflecting all their concerns, and so him geting into drugs semmed merely as Scanlan being Scanlan and experimenting with one more depravity. In between all the struggles to save the world and the prospects of their own deaths constantly hanging overhead, little wonder they didn't see the signs for what they were. In real life, such things happen all the time, and definitely not because people wouldn't care.
@@ronphelps985 funnily enough he actually did ask for vexs name when he first introduced himself. but she fot aggressive and never answered so he never bothered again
I'm catching up on the show now... (god, there are so many episodes), but this and the last one really blew me away. Sam is a genius. Possibly an evil genius, but definitely a genius. I've done enough improv in LA to know how hard it is, and he is excellent at remembering details, and truly listening. He broke everyone's heart in the previous episode, but made everyone, (including myself) die laughing afterwards. And in this episode, I felt like it was really clear why he wanted to roll a new character. Taryon had a lot to play with right out of the gate. And in just one episode past his introduction, we find an emotional depth and a relateable person. It looks like it was amazingly fun for Sam, and since everyone has spent so much time with the same characters, it had to be a blast to be something else for a while. I didn't start watching Critical Role until Campaign 2, (so I'm more familiar with Liam and Sam as Caleb and Nott), but flipping back to these episodes really show why the new characters in Campaign 2 are so important. Being able to explore new relationships, have fun with new abilities, and give space to try new things is a powerful draw, and I really can't blame Sam for jumping the gun and giving it a whirl with Taryon.
His ability to listen and remember the most interesting and important details is his defining strength as a roleplayer and why he's the best member of the cast ❤️
Vox Machina: Might be awkward to bunk up 2 to a room on this ship. Mighty Nein: All crams together into one 10-foot dome, often when other accommodations were available.
That does feel like a matter of practicality for the Nein. They were a pretty paranoid bunch, and sleeping in an invulnerable sphere is pretty mind-easing. They were all too happy to spread out into their own presidential suites once Caleb could make a tower.
I love how Sam created a character SPECIFICALLY designed to troll the party. Best part? He intended to have him around for like 3 episodes and yet this was the one that stuck!
@@elmatilda Yeah, He said the Bard character he had (forgot after 2 years) was depressing him in RL so wanted an upbeat one for 2-3 episodes. It's why Matt is allowing him to be so OP, the character wasn't meant to last let alone have an arc :D

Also made for a good one shot
I have a feeling Sam made this character specifically to annoy every single person in a different way
Of course he did, he has taken certain traits of every party member and made them into one character (wanting to be centre of attention, has a giant fighting buddy, same buddy is a hulking giant who unlike grog can read and write, wants his friend to be silent and not talk about it’s feeling, was raised by tutors, comes from wealth, is pompous, really into books and builds things that Percy can’t understand, has daddy issues... the list goes on)
This character is ironically like a character I have actually played. Who sadly didn’t last very long. I happened to be playing in a bit of a toxic group.
@@nightflame69 Dam feelsbad man. It happens. I have been playing with the same group for 7 years now. Just find those you can stick with for the long haul.
Yes, absolutely
7 years later I realized that he even trolled Matt with the "fantasy game with little minis" 😂
Things you need to join Vox Machina:
1. Daddy issues
2. the hatred of the elderly
3. trouble comprehending doors and door-like contraptions
4. money...or a magic item that will go unnoticed if stolen
Also don’t forget the alcoholism and whoring
"what'd you roll?"
"8."
scanlan may be gone, but his initiative rolls are here to stay
My favourite things about Sam in this is his little subtle jabs that Tary makes without knowledge but Sam knowing how much this will irk the party; Vex is a little elf girl, Percy won't understand the complexities of a golem and, my personal favourite, Doty being a huge lumbering tank WHO CAN WRITE AND READ unlike our lovely illerate Grog. Sam is, without a doubt, the best character performer and so intricate in his storytelling, he's just too good, I'm in awe 🧡
And the way he says "He's all that i want in a friend. Silent." Holy shit, the man is a evil genius

Vex: *Pulls out the deck of many things*
Grog: Where... did you find one?!
Easily the best moment in the episode
Christian Thorn Yes! That whole interaction was wonderfully done. I love Travis' ability to limit himself to Grog yet still be great with it.
In many ways, GROG is a pure soul.
Also the high five fail after was adorable lol
And then Talesin's "How is he this good?!"
😈 maybe they should have let terry whatshisface draw from the deck of many things 😜🤔
"And, I just... I thought that I could. But I can't, And I NEEEEEED TO" Sam Riegel is the best roleplayer hands down.
Sam: “Friends call me Tary, Jumbo”
Travis: “Tary Jumbo!”
I love how fast Travis was with this response 😂 I’m looking forward to the rest of this episode
he's a fucking god isn't he. the interactions of him and sam are the best parts of VM for sure
None of them have actually introduced them self's to Sam's new char other then Percy??
Travis is brilliant in his roleplay of a simpleton. I think a lot of people don’t appreciate how hard that actually is to do and it not be annoying. He’s possibly the best performer in the group.
Mathis?
To be honest, after I watched and stopped around this same point before finally DM’ing my own game and coming back now. Not only am I so impressed with his performance as Grog, Marishia’s performance as Keyleth is top-tier. She kept it up despite all the hate. If you don’t believe me, watch how fast she picks up things like “boulder, paper, shears” and flips that into a sincere-sounding character expression. Or that dust bowl ad Sam had them read and she’s the only one that, despite complaining, picked it up ultra fast, reading as she went IN ACCENT!
I laughed real hard when the Grand Maven thanked VM for destroying the Cinder King and Teryon said You're Welcome like he was there. XD.
It fit his new character beautifully.
The entire right table's reactions were amazing. Laura with the quick angry look. Travis with his double take. Liam with his slow look and wording "Really?"
Perfection
How does Sam do it!? Taryon starts ugly-crying and confessing, and I immediately adore him.
Matt: "What are you thinking about while reaching into the Bag of Holding?"
Grog: "Candy."

The last time he was on a ship was after he escaped Whitestone when he threw himself into the river and thought Cassandra was killed.

@@yiklongtay6029 Grog and Pike I agree with, but I'd definitely add Scanlan to the Hero complex list too.

Ashley has said before that she's started to feel like a guest character at times and when she is able to get on the show, she tries to be more assertive and play more and make some memorable moments for Pike. I think it can explain the box situation.

Vax: "I feel bad about being a prick to Kynan. This is a major turning point for me."
*Does the same thing to Taryon.*
I enjoyed it.
Dwayne Cox There is a difference between the two. Keynen was overconfident and eager to do a good thing, yet know experience.
Tarion is very egocentric and pompous (as clearly by design, gotta love Sam‘s master plan here) and he gets to them only hours after Scanlan left.
So I would not say they don’t in that regard.
“I’m going to Kynan him.”
I mean to be fair (insert letterkenny reference here) they’re planning on taking taryon to the 9 hells. They needed to know if he was capable. The fact he’s a douche was just icing on the cake. With Kynan they pretty much already knew he couldn’t keep up with them therefore testing him was a game to Vax at the time which he later regretted.
This action is not justify able you wana be dicks fine be dicks but you don't get too justify your dickish actions as being for someone else's benefit once you realise that your messing arround might have gone far. Hazing is a horrible thing, no matter how you justify a joke is one thing but almost getting someone killed is another.
They wanted to test him? Ask him to show them what they got do a spar he would have prolly loved it but the rogue getting a suprise round on the guy especially when he has been nothing but forthright is just mean especially when the said person has clearly been out right with its like if someone tells you they don't know how to swim properly and are learning and pushing them literally into the deepest end of the pool without any warning to later say we did it to help you.
Jesus the worst part isn't even the hazing, you haze someone weaker then you sure, but you don't get to justify that hazing by saying that's what gona happen later and I will protect you then, this fucking hasn't known you for more then a day and you almost killed him. You wana be self aware assholes then own up to being assholes not this bullshit jeesus -. -
Agaaaain talk abt the characters not the players.Becsuse if this how they characters would act in such a situation then said characters are indeed assholes and being self-aware assholes makes you much worse and makes scanlan leaving all the more sense.

EMOTIONAL DAMAGE
IDK I always thought Vex was more of the leader later on than Scanlan was.
@@Awesomesauce1_8_6_4because of what? She negotiates and makes plans just as much as the others. I know years later (in the present) they refer back to her as the leader and I've never understood why. Hell Keyleth has more directing of the party than Vex.
All of them have taken the lead at some point or another, but none of them are "The Leader."
I read Taryon's player card as "insufferable magic" instead of "infusable magic."
Either works, to be honest.
Same and true. Through some of that insufferable magic though (with out the daddy issues), i am starting to like him.
I swear I read the same, I'm not kidding

“ how is he this good?“
Love hearing them give Travis the credit he truly deserves. Man is a comedic/RP genius.
2:52:50
Man, how does Sam do it? He's just suddenly not Scanlan anymore. He's a completely different character who resonates completely different with Vox Machina (I laughed so hard at his tinkering talk with Percy). He's such a good actor, and as much as I'll miss Scanlan, I can't wait to see how Terry turns out as a member of the group.
I keep hopeing grog tricks Terry into pulling a card since hes out of the loop
just like he was an actor or something xd
Tary
Have you missed Brody Slater and his awesome loot crate pitches?
God. at first i just kinda found Tary funny but the second sam made him all excited about his advanture list i am just sold. i love tary now.
It's just beautiful to watch the gears turn in Travis' head as he tries to keep the gears turned of in Grog's head.
Well, Sam Riegel might just be my favorite person in the entire universe now. First the absolutely amazing downward spiral of Scanlan, and his departure scene. And then this Taryon, an absolute masterclass in character creation and acting. My every hat, proverbial or not, is off to him.
Same. Sam riegel is fucking amazing
My favorite character/s of VM Definitely Sam!!! Travis is a close second! 💕💕💕
Sam is great, Travis and Laura as well - but wait until you see Liam and especially Talieson in campaign 2. and creepy Marisha in c3…
@@reesofraft4166 Did you think I wouldn't be caught up after 3 years, dude?
@@bartholen you never know. I'm just watching c1 now after finishing c2 and while c3 is running...
Oh I just realized that Vex recognized Scanlan as the leader of Vox Machina at 34:34
I took that as a "can I speak to the boss" "no they're not in right now, go away"
John Willis I was also thinking Pike.
I knew it was scanlan.
That moment you realize every time he introduced himself as the leader jokingly, it was true...
he was the defacto leader
Could have also been a jab at Sam for not being Scanlan XD
After watching this a second time, Grog is taking scanlan's absence very hard. The first time I thought he was asking the names of things because he was judging Tary, but I realized just now, that he's doing this so he doesn't lose someone else he might trust.
Did anyone else catch Grog saying 'Huggies' when Vax says that Tary was pampered.... I almost spit my drink out when I heard that.
As for their very first meeting, unfortunately we weren't there for that.
other than still being a group of dicks, they learned a few things haha
Keep in mind his backstory. It's pretty freaking specifically designed to be endearing to all the characters.
Sam hasn't "Learned his lesson." He's gaming them, pretty hard.
Taryon has 100% accuracy at completely misreading characters and drawing the wrong conclusions, to the point that he even thinks Keyleth is confident and cool. Actually, I'm curious how that will affect her, being the first time in her life it's happened!
Probably not at all given she didn't hear him saying that and I somehow doubt Vax would carry the message.
"You want me to pull it out?"
"......phrasing."
ROFL!
Watching for the first time and I’m praying that if/when Taryon returns to his home, his father says “ah, Taryon, my wayward son!”
Dude, pretty sure that's at least the episode title.
THERE'LL BE PEACE WHEN YOU ARE DONE
GET OUT, THAT WAS BRILLIANT 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
“You know what... I don’t normally do this but... what’s your name?” Best line in the entire fucking series!!!!
How else is one to get their names they never introduced themselves
@@ronphelps985 funnily enough he actually did ask for vexs name when he first introduced himself. but she fot aggressive and never answered so he never bothered again
Sam was running on all cylinders with Tary. He's so insanely quick with his lines.
