This might be a stupid question. Is this similar to other hybrids whereby the engine charges the battery. Or is it simply using a combination battery and fuel? I currently have a 2019 raptor, used for city to rural driving three times a week as the main purpose. Not towing etc.

I didn't word that perfectly, yes the majority of people by numbers live in city's and don't travel far. but my imperfect point was about ute buyers and tradesmen, even if your site is 20km from home 1-2 trips for material or hardware and your out of charge, I routinely go through 2 600km tanks of fuel in a week and I'm not an edge case. this tiny range does not serve the current dual cab market @@Tommmmmmmmmmmm

Typically a PHEV will retain 20% battery charge for situations where it needs extra power. It’s only if you’re towing at 100% throttle for an extended period where that 20% will drain and you’ll be left with the petrol engine alone.

I think the f150 system is superior. As I understand it, the internal combustion engine is used at a fixed RPM and constant load which is the most effecient / economical way to run, to drive the generator / motor to produce electricity for the battery to store. The electric motor uses the electricity from the battery which is the most effecient / economical and instant max torque to drive the transmission etc. Plus the added advantage of the abillity to power your house for a couple of days or a camp site for a week.

$100k is WAY too much. They need to release a base level spec at a small premium above the current 2WD base price of mid to high $40k range. Its only going to have a small battery, so extra cost shouldn't be huge. If they start this range at $60k on road I'll be at the front of the queue...otherwise I'll be buying something else. It's a work ute, not a sports car, $100k is a ridiculous notion.

I would prefer a hybrid that regen’s via engine and braking, not a plug-in.
Why not have a hybrid bi-turbo diesel 3 litre v6, electric = torque so that with the diesels torque surely is a good idea.
It will still reduce fuel economy, maybe not as much as a plug-in but i’d like to see it.

Plug ins do regen via engine and braking also... They wont have the V6 because of space and weight, with the batteries you'd have an absolute tank... would most likely be the 4cyl twin turbo.

How many times can these journalists mention a fuel consumption figure of a PHEV without at least explain to the audience that it means for the FIRST 100km starting with a fully charged battery.
On top of that, the fridge fuel economy figure should have a rating for Hybrid mode, eg, when the battery is flat.
These vehicles are still insanely priced, but now the public thinks they actually need them. Well done marketing.

PHEV is a waste of time and expense. The vehicles cost more, you still have all the maintenance costs associate with a combustion engine vehicle and you still need to purchase fuel to run this vehicle. On top of this you need to in Victoria, pay the EV per kilometer road tax. Don't waste your money on these types of vehicles.
