  • In today's video I have made my way to the Hungarian city of Gyor. A place close to my heart as this is where I courted Mrs Greeno back in the day !
    We'll have a little tour of the town and then find some traditional Hungarian food. But the twist is we find it in an English pub in the town !

    I love Hungarian food. I have a very dear friend in Kalocsa who keeps me supplied with various forms of paprika! Goulash is one of my favourites to make and eat. There's never anything left! Chicken Paprikash is also a favourite, but I haven't got the knack of making the noodles so we have to use pasta instead! Anything with paprika is good! I hope you have taken Mrs Greeno a good supply home with you! It does need to be freshly ground or made into a paste, to get all the flavour nuances it can supply, to dance on your tongue!

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah we have various different types of paprika here, sweet, smoky, spicy etc. The noodles (nokedli) are really hard to make, Mrs Greeno only did it once here before declaring that the time it took to make them wasn't worth it, so if we ever have paprikash we also have pasta with it !

As for the pork - that garnish is a very traditional Hungarian accompaniment... nothing gets wasted, and it's supposed to be a way to make the fat look more attractive. @@747jono As a city I am less fond of Frankfurt - find it a little sterile. But around the wider Hesse region there are some great cities and towns to visit. I particularly like Bad Homburg. You mentioned Koblenz, I went there once is a kid, maybe 13 years old, got a photo of me somewhere standing at Deutches Ech where the 2 rivers meet. Not been back since then (late 80s - I should definitely visit again sometime!)

      Koblenz is a lovely city, some amazing coffee shops,cake places and lovely ice cream parlours.
      My gf have done both sides of the area.
      So from Mainz you take the train to Koblenz,the main line for RB and ICE etc to Bonn Köln etc that's one side of the Rhine.
      To be on the other side of the Rhine you take train from Wiesbaden another city lots to see, lots of Americans there, streets named after Presidents etc.
      The American airbase still there, was used extensively for bringing back injured servicemen from Iraq Afghanistan etc.
      On that side of The Rhine its basically the road runs parallel with the river.
      So lots of traditional hotels, no chains at all.
      Great service etc.
      We stayed one year in a lovely place.
      Balcony 2nd floor open windows first thing in morning cup of coffee and a beautiful view over the Rhine fantastic.
      Train station 5 minutes walk, so buy day ticket hop on and off train explore etc.

    You have no need to miss that amazing soup once you're back in the UK , just trundle along to Wales and order Cawl....it's basically the same but the Welsh obviously love to use lamb but any meat can be used.

    Wow, what a beautiful place! Not long got back from Albania and have got the bug again! After seeing this video I am tempted to fly to Vienna and visit Gyor and Bratislava in the trip! Is there anywhere else you'd recommend round these parts? Love the channel by the way!!

      There's loads of cool places around central Europe for sure. If you wanted to do a bit of a tour by train you could start in Salzburg, head to Vienna, then Gyor and Budapest. Also in Hungary take in detours to Sopron and the area around Lake Balaton. Got me wanting to look at flights again now, and I have only just got back ! How was Albania? I heard the transport infrastructure there could use someinvestment, but that's haf the fun of traveling around I think, never quite knowing how you're going to end up where!

    Great vlog, looked a lovely city. Huge portions of food, you seemed to be eating the pork dish for ages and the amount didn’t seem to go down. The goulash looked a bit thin, but as it was a soup that’s probably why, but packed with veggies etc. Silly story, when I was very young we had a yard of ale mounted on brackets on the wall in our dining room, absolutely no idea why ! It was there for a very long time. One day we came home and it had shattered into a million pieces ! Hadn’t fallen off, so it was a complete mystery !

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good job nobody was in the dining room when that yard shattered - you'd have had a heart attack ! Goulash (or per the Hungarian spelling Gyulas) is a thin broth soup wit large chunks of meat and veg in it - we're just conditioned over here to expect it to be more of a stew I think, as that's how it started appearing on restaurant menus way back when. Thanks for the kind words about the vlog - always much appreciated !

      @@GreenoEats absolutely ! But the millions of tiny shards of glass were everywhere ! I didn’t realise that about the Goulash and yes, have always thought of it as a stew. One year my husband made it for Christmas dinner and it was like a stew, so probably not very authentic
