Hi folks, I am currently in a Hungarian fan park with really dodgy signal, so apologies if I am not on the ball with comments this evening. Ria Ria Hungaria !!
I hope you enjoy the video anyway, it's SO HOT here, 7pm and 33 degrees. The beer is cold though 🍻
Enjoy the time, beer and warm weather in Hungary 😊
9 sheets for all that ploughman scran is great value.👍🏻
I always feel guilty after eating cake lol.🙄😁
@@jessicanippes1730 I am having a great time, it's too hot for this English guy, but the beer is cold ❄️ Just been watching the game with Hungary and Germany.... The locals here are not happy 🤣
@@robsmith6281 absolute bargain right. As long as cake is taken in moderation then no reason to feel guilty. I reckon I have cake maybe 4 or 5 times a year. I wish I could say the same for crisps 🤣
Ten times better than the last ploughmans you reviewed. Pork pie is a common addition round here and probably Wensleydale rather than Brie
That's the second vote for Wensleydale, and I'd have to concur. Lends itself really well to sweet flavours like the apple
Less cheese and throw in a boiled egg and a pork pie...perfection.
Mum and dad obviously watching their cholesterol , skin on spuds and beans perfect for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol....your Ploughman's with all that dairy and cooked red meat not good for them mate 🤣
Great vlog and when I'm on holiday this would be a welcome treat 👍
It's interesting reading the comments on this and the previous Ploughman's vlog... people have differing opinions on what should or shouldn't be on there, but the one pretty much constant is pork pie.
Now, that is a definite improvement on the previous Ploughman's...! Swap out the brie for a port pie and we're almost there...!
And the bread for something from a cottage loaf. Would be nigh on perfect then!
When I worked in the restaurant we called it a leftover plate as that's what it is and it's a great way to eat lunch
Is that right 🤣 I love a Ploughman's, but we often have similar and call it a picky lunch, and it's whatever needs using in the fridge!
I remember as a young man the campaign to eat more cheese. This would have been in the early fifties. The Milk Marketing board came up with advertizing for ploughmans lunches. It was bread, cheese and butter. These had just come off rationing so the idea was sound. Many pubs offered this along with a pint of best. I can't remember seeing salad or tomatoes on the plate, but I did occasionally come across pork pie, especcially in the Midlands. The cheese was also regional and not just cheddar.
Yeah, some people claim that it was the Milk Marketing Board who invented the Ploughmans, but my understanding is just that the re-popularised it. Back in the day when pubs didn't really have much of a food offering this would have been a simple meal they could offer with a foaming pint as you say - delicious!
@GreenoEats The MMB used the lunch as a prop in an advertising campaign. I'm pretty sure they didn't come up with that name, but it was clever of them to get folks eating cheese again. It was rationed until 1954, along with meat. I know my mother was upset when I joined the RAF in 53, not because of joining but the loss of one ration book in the household, lol.
Bedtime is not the best time to watch your review....now i want cake 😋😂
Ha ha, sorry about that 🤣
100% better than the last sorry effort of a ploughman's. This one just missing proper bread and bit of pork pie. But not bad on the vfm front.
For 9 quid I can overlook the pork pie (although easy enough swap that for brie IMO) Some better bread would improve it certainly
I'd be taking a lot of the cheese home with me!
I did the same (in my belly 🤣)
Really enjoying this Ploughman's series and the different takes on this iconic dish.
I have a feeling this idea could run all summer long... 😊
I mean cake house of the nice sweet, fluffy variety is better than the previous! Ploughman's looked really good
Ha ha, yeah definitely prefer the cakes on offer now!
@@GreenoEats cake and tea are life 😄
That looks proper! Great value and looks just like something that would actually sate the 'ploughmans' hunger ready for an afternoon on the fields. I also LOVE coffee and walnut cake.
Oh yes - this would make the plough move a bit faster :-) I'd say coffee and walnut is probably my favourite cake, meaning I have it about twice a year probably !
@@GreenoEats On a slightly but not really related subject. Carrot Cake. In Singapore and Malaysia it's made with Radish! I kid you not. Quite the shock when that turns up with your coffee.
@@FastSnax wow, really? I've seen beetroot in chocolate cakes, but radish? Isn't that a bit peppery to work in a cake?
@@GreenoEats It's savory and it's steamed. You can also get it as fried cubes with egg. Both are OK, but obviously the first time you get it, it's quite the WTF? moment.
Oh Jaysis Greeno that ploughman’s is insane. Cheap and gorgeous. Well done mate 👍
For the money it was absolutely exceptional!
3:07 better than last time straight away greeno,
But like I said before your old upload you did them 10 times better matey,
Absolutely !
I would pay 9 pound just to sit out there, so beautiful. That food was a bargain. Those deserts would cost 7-10 euro in Dublin so less than 4 pound is amazing. I wonder, do they sell that pickle in there? It looks homemade.I think the bread could be better and maybe another slice of ham, but great for the price. Thank you again for a great review
I think they get the chutney from another local supplier - if I go again I will find out as I too would like to get some ! The desserts and cakes are all made in house - the owner has some fancy baking qualification too!
Great pub init,
Great upload
Great value for money 💰 definitely
Well it's a tea house not a pub, but still yes - great place, great value - and thanks for the kind words about the video !
100% per cent better than the last one but I think the search is going to continue to find the ultimate one
Oh yes - there's still room for improvement, the search will indeed go on !
Have to be honest pal I'd have gone for the jacket spud aswell Brie is good for cheese on toast.👍🏻😋😋
The spuds are great as OldMan Greeno can testify 😃
Top video Greeno, food looked fantastic and I agree I think this was value for money! There is no way you’re hiding those cakes from the kids mate!! 😂😂 ….Smithy
I barely got in the door before the vultures descended pal!
@@GreenoEats 😂
12:22 wow, that all looks Amazing,
What would you pick ?
Looked like a perfect setting for enjoying a nice fresh Ploughman's! looked very nice for £9, it all looked very fresh. Thanks Greeno
Fab location, a very enjoyable lunch and a bargain price. That's 3 ticks in my book 🙂
Looks great greeno but maybe should have had different hard breads for the dips over soft bread that's my fault otherwise looks amazing 👏
Yeah the bread selection could have been more varied, but at least they had white and brown. But for the price... Chef's 💋
If you ever get the time to travel to Wensleydale try the Creamery for your ploughman's.
It's a long haul from Dorset, but I will bear it in mind, thanks for the tip 🙂
It is a long time like 25 years since I had a Ploughman’s, but you whet my appetite Greeno! Beer or not!
Ploughmans with a Fanta doesn't quite have the same ring to it does it :-)
@@GreenoEats You re right, Greeno. Whilst travelling, I often used to partake of a cheese platter which came with a bit of cow chow and some grapes. accompanied by a fine port wine on long haul flights. But a good Ploughman’s well, it’s been a long time. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed it.
If you were to mix the brie with the cheddar, the colour, texture and taste would be almost identical to traditional home made farmhouse cheese - and that's what a ploughman would've eaten out in the field. The flavour of farmhouse cheese (made from raw milk, for family consumption) was often tinged with that of cider, as the wheels would be wrapped in cheesecloth that was then doused with cider to help preserve it. Many was the year when, at Christmas, Dad would be given a small wheel of farmhouse cheese by a grateful farmer (he was an agricultural engineer) and we would eat hunks of it each day! When I say a small wheel ... it would easily have been 20lbs!
Wow, I do like cheese at Christmas, but I think I might struggle to get through that much ! A while back I visited the Bath Cheese Company (not for a video, just for a day out) and they had cheeses that they make which sound similar to what you describe - a softer cheese washed in cider.
@@GreenoEats There 6 cheese eaters in my immediate family, then over Christmas at any one time, there might be another 20! So that wheel lasted until February if we were careful! Granddad always got a share to take home, and he'd eat it every evening before bed! Dad was always generous in sharing, so much so that one year he accidentally gave away almost the whole thing! He made sure never to be quite that kind again!
@@lizg5574 sounds like Christmas was quite the event at your house!
Search for an article in Lancashire Life called "A family affair at The Café at Spring Cottage in Rivington"
You will see a proper ploughman's right at the top
Rivington is also a brilliant day out. Plenty to see and do
I am out and about in a town called Gyor in Hungary right now, but when I get back to my hotel later I will have a look 😊
Great review @GreenoEats. The ploughman's looked really substantial and tasty. Great value at only £9.
For the money I think you'll be hard pushed to find better value for sure!
That is cracking value. Good find.
Absolutely belting for the money isn't it! And with views to die for too, wonderful!
Can't beat a good ploughman's, and that one fits the bill perfectly. Nice one Greeno .
Thanks David, I think you'd be hard pushed to find better for the price paid!
@@GreenoEats I totally agree, that looked Devine.Hope you're enjoying the Euros.
The Hummingbird Cake maybe is a version of a Southern US classic dessert. Kudos to the bakers for being so open with their menu choices!
So much variety, and all made in house - I'm not much of a cake lover, but they were excellent
Nice music again in background,
Thanks!
Just subbed been watching awhile first time you did to good to go .so we tried was very similar to you on South coast England I enjoy your channel as English food brings back memories and glad see still around great vid keep it up wolf
Nice to meet you Wolf! Glad you are enjoying the content 😃
Newly subscribed after viewing your duet with Gary Eats and Rick Stein review. Your channel has a great family feel and ploughman's is a decreasing option on pub menus. That one is a great quality meal and the spud looked good as well.
Welcome to the channel - I am glad you like it so far :-) I find it strange that a polughman's is hard to find - surely it must be a dream in a commercial kitchen - no cooking required - just assemble it on a plate. Maybe it's just out of fashion. If they called it an Artisanal English Antipasti plate it would sell like hot cakes !
@@GreenoEats What is a country pub without ploughman's on its menu? I look forward to your continuing search
2:44 looks mighty tasty
Indeed !
Nothing like a proper ploughman’s lunch
You mean there is nothing like it, or this was nothing like it 🤣
Haha I mean there is nothing like a proper ploughman’s lunch .. !😆
Needs a piece of pork pie and some proper crusty bread.
Can't argue with that!
9 of 10 and looks good.
Easy 9/10 pal. Great price and location too
Looks better than the last one , lots of cheese though , maybe as someone said a pork pie would be good and a proper pickled onion and less cheese
Swap the brie for pork pie, slightly better bread option and as you say a traditional pickled onion and I reckon this would be pretty much spot on !
Looks really good. I don't eat meat and can't eat gluten, but the cheese and the other components like the chutney look nice. I would definitely eat the jacket potato.
I believe they have a gluten free bread option, and I am sure they would leave off the ham if asked, bingo, a great lunch :-)
@@GreenoEats agreed!
I’m the same. I keep trying to scan the menus to see if anything is marked GF. English pubs and restaurants seem quite bad at providing gf food clearly marked on the menu. Like you, I miss really good 🥖 🍞
Not my cappa cha but I do appreciate you mixing it up a bit. Shame there's no ale - surely they could get a licence ?
You mean the ploughman's isn't up your street, or the content. Either way, always happy to get the feedback 😃
Looks like a nice location. There's still got to better ploughman's out there!
And I am on a mission to find it :-)
I always taught beetroot was in a ploughmans maybe I'm wrong but enjoy
I certainly wouldn't say no to it, I love beetroot
I’m all on board to find the best ploughman’s 🧀 🍎
Sounds like a decent way to spend my summer doesn't it :-)
£9, can't beat it,
Bargain for what I got - still not a perfect Ploughman's though...
£10 for 3 cakes. go to aldi for the sticky toffee cake £2.19
better price on the poughmans
These were handmade cakes by a trained pastry chef as I have since found out. No comparison to a shop bought cake. Glad you agree that the ploughman's was decent value 🙂
Nice Thumbnail Sir,
Thanks David !!
Looked very nice, I think I would have preferred slightly less Cheddar to fit in another cheese choice, maybe a bit of Stilton or Wensleydale. I think the latter goes best with apple. I guess French sticks don't have the shelf life that other breads have. I will be going down your way, cricket at the Utilita Bowl on Friday and then Axe Vale show on Saturday. Weather is set fair so really looking forward to it but no time to visit the Cake House sadly.
Ooh, a bit of Wensleydale on a ploughman's would be great, really lends itself to sweet accompaniments doesn't it. I hope you have a great time down my way, is it cricket you are heading to? I am doing the Women's T20 on July 6th in Soton, looking forward to it!
@@GreenoEats Yes seeing Hampshire Hawks in a T20 game. I always do Axe Vale so sorted a little road trip. Have a great time on the 6th, I am seeing the Eng ladies v NZ in a T20 game at Lords later in July.
@@KPWHU Nice! The cricket I have planned will be Little'uns first trip to a cricket match, I am hoping she'll enjoy it as I have failed to get both kids into football!!
@@GreenoEats The churro always seem to be popular so I'm sure little un will enjoy tucking in!
Try and get tickets for The Hundred ideal for families and plenty for kids to do on the concourse
What a cozy place ona sunny day. So sad they dont seve freshly baked bread, it would have been so easy... plate looked good, love cheese, but cant eat cheddar, hurts my tummy... What is the bright light on your blue heaven???? Have not seen it here for a while 😂 Greetings from Cologne ... dorset apple cake sounds fab, I would have choosen this one ❤
I make my own Dorset Apple Cake sometimes, just without the evil cinnamon 🤣 It's a pity that you cannot enjoy cheddar, a really good one is among the best cheeses in the world in my opinion Jessi
@@GreenoEats I know, Greeno, I really would like to eat cheddar, the taste is great. But its not worth the pain...
@@jessicanippes1730 that's fair enough Jessi, is it just Cheddar or all cheese / dairy? I could live without Cheddar, but all cheese? That would be tough!!
@@GreenoEats some cheeses, like cheddar, raw milk cheeses, I guess...
Freshly baked bread would give this establishment a 10/10 surely straight away. Lovely food by the look of it and location to….
That looks like a delicious meal as did your parent's spuds. I checked out the prices and reviews. A place I'd actually love to visit and probably will. The other place you had the ploughman's was like Tesco value at Waitrose premium prices - what a total con job!! 😂
parents' not parent's
Let me know if you do go, I am yet to find anyone with a bad word to say about the place!
Actually as only one of my parents was there (my Dad and his partner) the grammar works... As long as both of the spuds were his 🤣
Anyone who goes round criticising people's grammar and spelling on the Internet is generally a cnut 😅
It’s bloody hard to tell on camera what variety of apple that was on camera but at an educated guess I’d say it looks like a coxes orange pippin before it starts to colour up
You may be right - I am certainly no apple expert (as was clear in the vlog!)
I guess the people at the cake house are dorset in their ways soak it up like a sponge, that's very icing to and do they waffle alot and when they leave are scone?!
I ham very impressed at your cheesy puns. The owners are Dorset born and bread, and however busy they are don't seem to get in a pickle 🙂
@@GreenoEats I would say my puns are brie-illiant and you saying ham impressed is a bit of a pig born and bread is all white at least they are using their loaf and hope they are not brown-ed off, and them not getting in a pickle is no big dill!
Doesn't look to bad that plough man's nice cheese selection id prefer a crusty roll instead of sliced bread but for nine quid good value for money
Yeah, the bread could have been better - even just a chunk from an uncut cottage loaf or something. But for £9 compared to the almost £16 I paid elsewhere recently.....
@@GreenoEats yes I agree ithink the bread bit is key nice rustic bread and where was the butter for your bread ithink nine pounds isn't bad even if you took some of the cheese home it's value for money every where is different isn't it there interpretation of this old type meal the apple is a good touch to
Good value, not been there yet even though you reviewed it a while back.
Shouldn't be brie, maybe stilton?
Well spotted - I did pop there previously with the family. But I didn't have the ploughmans - so all good right :-) Personally not a huge fan of stilton, but I would agree an English cheese could be subbed in for Brie - lots of people championing Wensleydale in the comments too.
Brie, French Dressing and not Branston should not be allowed on a Ploughmans. It should be cheddar cheese ( preferably made in Somerset) some Branston pickle, a pickled onion ( pickled in the UK, and made from Uk onions and Malt vinegar that has been brewed and the malt grown in the UK) some proper bread and some scrumpy made from 100% UK apples ( preferably grown in Somerset fermented in the UK (preferably in Somerset). What you have had there was a Ploughman's Style lunch containing non Uk ingredients! Sorry if that sounds harsh but a PLOUGHMAN'S is what a person who ploughed used to eat for lunch! Brie and French dressing where not part of it. And before people start saying it was invented by the MMB, it was made popular my them ( I worked at one stage for them) but if a Cornish Pasty must be made in Cornwall , Parmesan has a PDO you have to have some standards.
I agree re the brie and French dressing (delicious though they were)... Can't go as far as insisting on Branston mind, cos I am sure your average ploughman back in the day would have been whatever chutney Mrs Ploughman knocked up 🙂 Scrumpy though, top choice that!
@@GreenoEats Branston is an outlier for me i dont like sweet with savoury it has to be just right? I used to just buy Branston because i didnt like Chuntney. I have tried alot of the own brand Pickles the ones i dont like get eaten by the other half! Buying the lidl one until they change the recipe.
@@stevewhitcher6719 that's fair enough, I am similar with sweet and savoury, although not so much with cheese. Love cheese with grapes, pineapple, apple etc. In fact I should probably learn to like fruit without cheese 🤣
The meat is one slice of ham? Is it a starter?
I think for £9 the portions were pretty fair - only one slice of ham sure, but look at all that cheese!
The height of English cuisine: The Ploughman's Lunch.
Except "Ploughman's Lunch" is merely a term devised by marketers to describe prosaic cheap food - cheese bread and pickles.
Not that you would pay little for this slop in a restaurant.
Food doesn't have to be complicated or full of process to be tasty. Also not true about the marketers. They took a traditional old meal and indeed did market it post rationing as a way to sell more cheese. What meals mean English cuisine to you that you prefer?
That meal not you to healthy your more used to fish and chips ❤
All about balance James 🤣
French dressing?
And brie - I know. Not traditional, but it really added a zing to that salad.
Number 268👍
What's number 268 David - you've lost me 😂
Cow 🐮 💩😂😂😂
Ha ha !
Swap out that Brie for Stilton , sourdough bread instead of sliced bread, and erase that sad salad for roasted vegitables then we're talking ...
Roasted vegetables on a Ploughman's - wow, that's a curveball !
I hate cheese! Stinks! 🤮
Really? Is that all cheese, or just certain ones?
