The S240 is a 300 series parts built on a 100 series frame. The S240 has the tough front axle, Kawasaki V twin engine, a better trans axle and a better seat. It also has a "T" counter balanced lift handle (which makes lifting the mower deck smooth and effortless.)

The video left out a few significant details, on various models he talked about some models might be better on hills, but the X330, X350 and X354 all use the K46 transaxle which is recommended for mostly flat yards with no hills. The X370 has the K57 transaxle which only has a 3/4" axle, the same axle size as the K46. You have to go to the X380 to get the sturdier K58 transaxle with a 1" axle size, IMHO a much better choice.

I just bought a 2021 X350, and retired a 16 year old MTD. For the last 5 years I've been cutting at least 5 lawns, very hilly... the frame on the MTD broke yet no rear end issues. I'm 100% confident the Deere is beefier and will last just fine going up and down hills. Now, if I was going to tow or push with it, yeah I'd worry about the rear end, but I'm just mowing.

rayism 24b This is the most revealing comment about the misleading practices that JD is using with customers. Thank you for putting this out there for the public to see. JD is marketing the X entry level models as tough machines that can be used to plow snow, pull heavy carts, but the K46 transmission is not made for that. The X370 is where the K57 engine with the Kawasaki engine is actually made to do those jobs.
I will be selling my S240 and getting the Husqvarna you mentioned in your comment. John Deere has become the Harley Davidson of Lawn mowers, they are living off their reputation and ripping people off with their under performing products.

@@raymond3803There are a BUNCH of different options for the K46 transmission (at least 30 different variations with options like charge pumps, steel gears, drain and fill plugs, or absence of drain and fill plugs, etc) The 100 series is truly the low end cheapest K46 transmission Deere offers--but not necessarily the cheapest or worst K46 made. The s240 and above get the K46 UPGRADED Deere spec transmissions. Tuff Torque rates the upgraded K46 Deere spec transmission in the S and X3 series for 30% more torque than the 100. Still not a powerhouse/heavy hauler by any means, but at least they're not giving you the exact same basement level POS K46...
I wish tuff Torque would give all these possible variants different model numbers, but they don't. This makes the K46 a big crap shoot as no one really knows what's inside by looking at the case. The base K46 unit is pretty weak, the highly upgraded units are fairly decent. Could be total garbage, or half way decent parts. It's all up to the manufacturers specs.

A much older JD dealer employee said: Does it just have the standard shift 4 speed transmission? YES! I'll give you $400 sight unseen. *WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?*
JD had just came out with the plastic transmission (I think will eventually be superior to hydro) 105 model. They had 4 or 5 of the 4 speed 100s new still in the crates marked down to $1000. From what I'm seeing, the 33- with a 48 inch deck is $4299 and the 350 with KW engine of the same size deck is $4499. I'd sacrifice the HP for the better reliability of the KW engine. Not that I've ever had a problem with Briggs. I just feel a stronger trust of KW products. Of course you could save $1000 if you go down to the 240 (give or take). But you don't get the electric mulch control AFAIK. I'm going to be in the market soon. Question to those that might know. Which of these would best handle a garden cart with 10 cu. ft. of mulch? I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

@@AnonymousGameWarden for an acre of flat lawn and a flat driveway, any of the S100 series mowers should do you fine. or if you want to go with a more premium version of the S100 series mowers, I'd recommend the S240. Same size as the S100 series mowers but has the same engine, transmission, tires, steering, and seat as the X300 series mowers, and it has a better quality mower deck. So the S240 is basically X300 quality parts on an S100 frame. Nice zippy little mower and my personal favorite for an acre of lawn. But if money isn't an issue then sure, you can't go wrong with the X300 series.

@@mrbubetube the S series can use the snowblower with no traction issues for a 600ft driveway? I'm concerned the transmission won't last long

@@AnonymousGameWarden for a flat lawn and flat driveway, traction won't be a problem. But for snow removal, you can always get a set of tire chains if you need the traction. Here's a video of an S240 with a snowblower. th-cam.com/video/g3ca8lq3S48/w-d-xo.html with the conditions in that video, you don't need to worry about the transmission, it can handle that fine. But if you think you'll be putting your transmission through more than the average workload and you plan on keeping that mower for more than 4 years, then you SHOULD service the transmission. A new transmission has 10W30 oil in it to give it a good break in period. Sometime after the first 50 hours, you should drain the oil out of the transmission, open it, clean out all the old oil and metal shavings out of the gear box, then reseal the transmission and refill it with a heavier grade 5W50 synthetic oil. This will give it maximum torque and a longer life, and you only need to do this once. Later after another 250 hours or so, you can just drain the oil again and refill it without having to take it apart to clean it because most of the largest metal shavings occur in the gearbox during the first 50 hours or so.

Two remarks about the John DEERE riding mowers, Cover and other plastic parts are of poor quality and break easily and the replacement parts are very expensive. The material that covers the seats is also of very poor quality and cracks easily. The mechanics generally work well.

Honestly to me these people would sell more land mowers to a person like me if they would just say look guys it's a lawn mower but it's a damn good lawn mower and then say this is why it's a quality lawn mower this is how it's built it's quality it's built to last this f***** is going to last you 20 years that would sell me a lawn mower using all these fancy words is not going to sell lawn mowers you can call it what you want if you and still evaluate into your product that's something I would want I want to pay for a reliable piece of machinery at the end of the day I seriously do

Don't buy this John Deere x147r Ride on mower. Unless you want to mow a level short lawn that doesn't get too long. Maybe a bowling green would be suitable.
The grass shute constantly clogs up if you mow heavy green grass so you have put your arm in and pull it all out.
You have no warning when it clogs and jams the blades while the motor keeps spinning the deck belt resulting in black smoke coming out that lets you know there's serious problem.
If you're lucky the belt will jump off the pulleys.
Putting the catcher back on is a frustrating procedure the makes you think it from a different model. The lock catch on the catcher releases very often dropping grass out the back. The whole catcher set up is flimsy and cheap. Not too mention frustrating.
Not good around trees as the catcher handle sticks up way too high and hooks onto branches.
1 hr of use after buying this brand new mower it developed an unnerving clunking sound in the deck.
I've always owned John Deere and have been a happy customer, but this model is poorly engineered and designed.

see with John Deere that's all their salesmen are ever taught to talk about his features features features features I actually spent years in sales training and that's called the redirect when it comes to it I actually was going to buy a John Deere and I asked the man what the price was on the equipment immediately he redirected me back to the features features features never would explain anything having to do with a price he just said features features features so I asked him one more time what the price was he never would tell me he did the redirect again of course this is an experienced salesman he's very good at his job very good at redirecting me before I even asked for a third time I went down to the competitor and bought their tractor cuz I realized they don't really care they're not really interested in selling tractors that's all they talk about are features they're never going to sit there and actually talk about the price they don't actually get down to the nuts and bolts of what it really is

Anybody with a diesel engine will tell you you run them hard and hot they're about to last that's normal you're supposed to work it the babying it technique or how you take care of it is that guy said has nothing to do with how it lasts like if you get a caterpillar or a Honda Civic for instance you can drive that damn thing for $300,000 MI and it will hold up no matter how you treat it basically cats are basically the best of diesel engines honestly they are and Honda civics are basically the best of gas engines they honestly they are from everything I've seen and over 30 years

Worst purchase I ever made was a John Deere X300. It’s just an over priced, low end, light weight, residential mower. Nothing but trouble. It’s a home for field mice now.

This riding mower cannot discharge the grass properly because its outlet is too small and the fan is not efficient. One solution is to mow your lawn every 3 days (2 days in the spring) in order to mow a very small amount of grass. If you wait one week, the grass outlet will be blocked all the time. Conclusion: this machine is made to mow when you have no grass, a machine to mow in the desert!

The salesman said durability comes down more to the owner than the manufacturer well that's not true at all in fact that sounds like the worst thing I could ever hear anyone say in their entire life I could give billions of examples and it would be a waste of time I don't care who abuses their equipment but if it's a bad piece of equipment it's going to break if it's really good it'll it will last I don't care how much you beat on it it should last okay I've had really good Honda cars and Toyotas and many caterpillar engines they're both wonderful it really doesn't matter how hard you are on a piece of equipment I absolutely disagree with this guy for a billion percent the build quality is everything go out there and run the s*** out of your equipment if it's built good it will last

You need to stop calling that a review that's misrepresentation if you're reviewing your own product every single time isn't that kind of a no-brainer every single John Deere video says you're reviewing your own equipment we already know that it's a sales marketing video why don't you just say sales video instead of we're doing a review video

I just realized when he started to close the hood there's basically just a big huge opening under there there's really no engine so it's a big Hood and a big space with really nothing under it God this is just getting worse as it goes all you need is a engineer or a person that actually understands what they're looking at or what they're reading to actually do a review then you can have an honest review when you open the hood and 90% of it is just space that's not good in other words the entire hood on that lawn mower is just for looks all of it it's just for looks
