  • Simple REPAIR on A Cracked John Deere Plastic Hood
Professional DIY Plastic Repair on a John Deere X300 Hood - Step by Step From Start to Finish!
I'll show you how to fix a broken or cracked plastic hood on a John Deere X300 mower. This process is the same on many plastic items, from car bumpers to trim pieces.
The result is fantastic; it takes a little ambition and time to complete it.
No paint was used on the outside of this hood and I DO NOT suggest using paint on the outside. The paint will flake and chip off quickly on the outside surface.

The best description I’ve heard for John Deere hoods are: "They're made of green potato chips and egg shells". For the high price they're charging for their hoods it would be SOOOO much better if they were made of aluminum or some other more durable material rather than brittle plastic. Canoes and kayaks are made of molded polyethylene resins that are strong (they smash into rocks and don't break), light-weight and inexpensive. John Deere needs to get their act together and stop ripping off their customers.

I enjoyed your video. Repairing products verses tossing them out has always been my mantra. Being raised in an environment (and time) where we had to fix things, I learned a lot from my dad and uncle. And I can never remember calling out a professional to fix anything. We just couldn't afford it.
Anyway, I have a JD 790 sub-compact tractor where the hood spyder cracked and would not close properly. It's metal so the repair was done with my MIG welder but there are several cracked plastic parts where I am goint to try out the staple idea and I am going to purchase the tool through your suggestion below. I appreciate the sharing of your work as well. Keep the videos coming.

Great repair job. I like the “stitches” you put in with the heating tool. Adding the fibre glass too will make it very tough, so it’s unlikely to crack there again. I would say that the repair is stronger than the original material. You made it look nice under the hood by painting - even though it’s out of sight. I like that attention to detail. Although it would not improve the strength, a little resin along the crack on the top side would fill in those little cavities and improve it cosmetically, before a coat of paint and polishing. The polishing made a dramatic improvement to the appearance - well done.

Not a bad looking fix and the wire welder can be used to fix other things, so that’s a good frugal purchase !
I removed the hood latch following your tip and that helps, but I think if the hood cracks one more time, I’ll use the welder and bondo, underneath but I might slap self stick camo shelf paper on the top so the trees and fence posts can’t see me coming

I’ve done the repair with the fiberglass but not the staples, that is a great addition. One add I’ve made on two hoods that I’ve done is applying one side glue foam weatherstripping to the tractor side. This absorbs the vibration when the engine is running and helps reduce the chipping that sometimes occurs at the edge of the hood b

I used to repair fiberglass hoods on semi trucks. The guys would crash into things and rip the whole left side fender off over the the steer tire. I would sand everything down clean and wipe the pieces with a wax remover cleaner. Bolt the hood together temporally. Then get fiberglass cloth and resin mixed up. I used 1/2 inch garden hose or 3/8 inch fuel tubing triple wrapped in fiberglass cloth. I used this for the curves and contours in the fenders to add strength. None of my repairs ever broke again from vibration. Plus the hose trick was underneath the hood the repairs were not noticeable. The glass wrapped around the hose did not add much weight compared to the whole hood. But it was a lot stronger after I was finished. Small hose wrapped in glass would work for your hood. You could add it to the inside edge. I am not sure how well epoxy will stay bonded to your hoods material. Have a great day.

Your method will work and it will last for the long haul. Roughing the underside and cleaning before is the secret to keeping the epoxy from turning loose. Adding your staples is great! I've been working with fiberglass for 50 years and never had any pop loose when your best practices are followed. Other methods are good, but are IMO a bit overboard for hood repair on a mower. Regardless, thanks to you and others for the excellent information.

Your solutions to these problems are super. Thanks. Something I've often wondered is this. Are these plastic hoods interchangeable? Or are many models interchangeable with the only difference being the decals and perhaps the airflow devices inside the hood? Maybe there is a chart that would say which hoods would fit which models. It seems to me that John Deere or any garden tractor maker would save a lot of money if the hoods all were the same with the only differences being the decals and airflow devices. Keep up the super instructions. By the way I really like your getting right to the point. As others commented no silly music or endless build up.

    • @baldeagle242

Thanks for the kind words. The X series hoods will interchange from model to model. Even the older style (like the hood in this video) will fit the newer mowers and vise verse. The older GT series hoods have a different style hinge that will not work “easily” with other models. I'm not aware of a chart showing what works and what doesn't but it sure would be nice to have one.

Thank you for this video I don’t have a crack in any of my mower’s but I have a few tractors with the same composite hoods and fenders and now I know how to wet sand them and polish them up!! Thank you!

Excellent tip on flipping the hood release/catch! I've ruined two hoods and never thought of that before. The latest "S" series models sold at the big box no longer use those catches and just hold with gravity. They also have a center handle cavity. Wondering if I can just buy one of those and replace mine.

Thanks for watching, Scott. I hope that tip has saved at least a couple of these hoods. I'm not sure if the newer hoods will fit or not. I'll have to check next time I get one in the shop.

Bought this tool to repair my Toro Wheelhorse hood that had lots of serious cracks after 25 years of use. The tool worked exactly as shown. Saved myself a lot of money compared to a replacement hood.

Great tutorial - thanks! Inherited a 277 AWS and so very interested in tips to keep it alive. Also is there a way to covert the diff to lock both wheels. It would really help with snow clearing.

Brilliant idea about repositioning the latch and it's great to know that there's a way to repair those hoods. People who collect broken mowers that have a blown engine or rusted out deck usually will sell the hood for $50 or so.

You sir, have got yourself another subscriber. I don't have a broken mower hood but I do have a '61 Galaxie. The seat trim is plastic and of course it's broken from people kicking it when they get into the backseat. I have been searching a long time for a method to repair it and make it kick-resistant. Never seen those staples before. Already ordered that kit. Thanks!

Cool. That tool with the little metal inserts was awesome, I’ve never seen that before. You could also use a plastic welder and you can use the Apoxsee on top of the hood to fill those debits as well and fill the crack and that will make it stronger and is Sandobal. You can also take a believe baking soda and superglue and make a paste and fill those cracks and sand it and get a very smooth service that was paintable

Great instruction & video! Now I could do this, easy! *The BEST TIP is to give the staple a twist & let it set locked in... with that it pulls crack together and would be difficult to even pull the staples out! TYVM!*
