In this video, I will be revamping my entire Gen 2 Living Dex in Pokemon Home by catching every Pokemon in their oldest possible games and I will be doing this using POKEBALLS ONLY!
This was an interesting challenge as I needed to catch over 155 Johto Pokemon due to regional variants, gender differences, and unown letters, most of which had terrible catch rates due to Gen 2 mechanics, and I had to do it all using only pokeballs!

Am working on a kanto shiny living origin dex currently, also pokeballs only, in gen three. Will have a lot of breeding to do without flame body, when I get to the safari zone pokemon (had to catch them in colosseum/XD with pokeballs). 31/151 after 3 years. Hopefully Pokémon bank will stick around for a long time.😅

I think the reason Mr. Mime’s name was messed up is that it’s name in Gen 2 seems to not have a space between the Mr. and Mime. It actually would’ve been worse in older versions of Poké Transporter, as it’s name would’ve become MR-MIME, since the period used in Gen 1 and 2 is different in Gen 7, and Transporter didn’t check for it. It used to also make Farfetch’d appear as FARFETCH D. However, there is a workaround for these shenanigans. Just name the Pokémon a word that’s censored in later games (use your imagination). Doing so will have its nickname outright removed when you transfer it, returning it to its species name.
Hahahaha that's an amazing workaround. Just give every pokemon offensive nicknames in Kanto and Johto and Transporter will work better for you. Amazing.
I normally named my Pokemon in old gens such as houndoom darkie. Not really understanding why that may be racist. Years later when I played sword I got censored for the first time.

I'm enjoying this series. I caught all the gen 1 and gen 2 pokemon from virtual consoles last year plus all unown letters. So I know how tedious this can be. I didn't use missigno either so leveling up for dragonair and dragonite was hell. I might mimic this challenge though for punishment. Great content man
Yeah leveling up them all for evolutions would’ve been so tedious in gen 1 but part of me wants to try and give every Pokémon pokerus and level them all up to 100 at some point!

My Pokémon home is absolutely disastrous with something like 4,000+ Pokémon not sorted. Getting the urge to go in and sort it out due to your videos! Really loving the series as I find the completion of the Dex to be one of my favourite things in pokemon.

I love this series. The only thing I would do different is put the regional variant Pokémon in the generation they were introduced. Mainly incase they ever release new variants in the future I wouldn’t have to reorganize all my boxes.
That’s totally fine if you want to do that. But I like going by Dex number and it really doesn’t take long to reorganize when they add new one every couple years or so

About Dudunsparce, you can always copy 100 different Dunsparce and send the copies to gen 9 to see which ones will evolve into three segmented. When you know which one, you can even use the original to add some nice ribbons on him or her to make the Pokémon even more special.
I actually am thinking about shiny hunting a 3 segment dudunsparce in fire red and leaf green and seeing what it evolves into before sending it up and doing a ribbon master quest with it!
@@ThedomiNATION Pokémon Colosseum also has a Dunsparce in it, so you could get one with a special purified ribbon. Know that this Dunsparce will be marked as coming from a distant land rather than Kanto nor Hoenn and it cannot come from its original region, which would be Johto.
There are ways to see if this Dunsparce will evolve into a three-segmented Dudunsparce, but that's a complicated method I don't understand. You could Google it if you're interested.
@@Leto85 yeah I actually don’t own colosseum plus hunting a shadow shiny in that game around 100 times would be ridiculous. So I’ll just get every ribbon except that one lol. But I do want to do a true ribbon master quest with a shadow shiny from colosseum some day. I just gotta muster up the courage to buy the game for $150+ then also muster up the courage to shiny hunt one of the shadows lol
This series certainly inspired me to make another living dex! I had one complete with all forms at the time on Bank, but decided to keep in that generation to keep the shiny charm unlocking ability for those games, plus it gave me an excuse to do a big massive playthrough of every generation again. :D
Also, I did the exact same thing with Mr. Mime, and it also stays in caps if you import from Gen 2 -> Bank, so it must be a quirk of the period.

Yeah I think it has to do with the period and space in the name. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t do that any other gen!
I gave up after completing the living dex for Pokémon sun and Pokémon let’s go eevee. I like the video though

I’m also completing a complete Home living dex. My requirement is that I get every origin mark on every possible form of pokemon. I’m also running a Professor Oak’s Challenge in each region-generation combination. I started about a year ago, and I’ve finished Red, Let’s Go Pikachu, and Fire Red. On to Crystal-this guide is super helpful.

Oh, I can't remember if I put this on the last video, but I tried so many times to get an Umbreon on my Japanese Emerald version. Sadly, with a dry battery, no matter what you set the time to, it only becomes Espeon. I even traded it to a bootleg with working time and it STILL became an Espeon! The only way to get Umbreon in gen 3 is through Pokemon Colosseum. I know you aren't going for it in gen 3, but I figured I'd let you know!
Yeah umbreon and espeon are tough in gen 3 because of that! Plus fire red and leaf green don’t even have time of day so you simply can’t evolve eevee into either of them in those games!
I started the exact same journey last summer, except that I don’t catch them all in poke balls , I completed the living dex with forms and gender diff from their original region, now I’am catching every shiny with forms and gender diff lol it’s super fun and rewarding
Well, weirdly this is pretty much exactly what I've been planning on doing for a while, I had the idea of completing a full form dex (plus a full shiny form dex, though that will take MUCH longer) a while ago, and some of the main things I wanted was to catch them all in their original games and in the basic pokeballs, because imo they're the ones that look the best. I've been waiting to properly start on it for a while due to just not having the time, and I really considered giving up on catching them in their original games cos I figured it'd just be a waste of time, but knowing that I'm not the only person in the world who would do something like that honestly makes me want to do it more.
Your videos inspired me to do my own living origin dex! I’m currently on gen 2 but will unfortunately have to restart my crystal save. I caught my Celebi and when I transferred it to bank, somehow it glitched and it turned into a clone of the Azumarill I was also sending to bank. Not sure how that happened but oh well, at least Crystal is fun

03:40 You can change the nickname in their original games to underscore letters. I remember I did run into a similar problem but forgot about it until I saw it here.
Level 40 Gengar with Night Shade, Hypnosis, Mean Look & Spite is perfect for catching the beasts. Haunter is a good backup
Not sure if this applies for the Virtual Console version (it should), but you can select "Move Pokemon W/O Mail" in the PC. This option allows you to move pokemon between all boxes and your party. It's much faster than doing it the usual way.
That is helpful but simply sending them up as soon as the box fills up was the most efficient way for me

I was doing a living dex for Home as well but mine is a bit more extreme, what I wanna do is for each gen complete a living dex, meaning gen 1 has a full PC with a living dex, gen 2 has a full PC with a living dex, gen 3 has a full living dex etc etc (meaning I won't trade up the completed dex to the next gen, so I'll have 9 gens with all the pokemon [or in gen 8+ all the possible pokemon]) also all forms/gender differences except in gen 1s case since they didn't have differences, the only thing I'm not doin as my reasoning is above is catching the pokemon in the earliest game possible since unless it's impossible to get without trading up (I.E the 3 birds and Mewtwo I have to get in RBY to get in GSC) I dont wanna trade up, this next part is a rant, but I found my 1st even gen 2 shiny (that isn't odd egg or gyarados) and I failed it cause I panicked. I just started and had a lvl 16 poliwag and lvl 20 quilava, found a shiny lvl 4 rattata and only had 2 great balls, I started the fight used a great ball and it broke out so what I was doing was just sending out my pokemon after eachother to just have it was PP and then use struggle and hurt itself, when it would be in orange or red HP I was gonna use hypnosis with poliwag but since it kept damaging my mons I used a potion and since it saved the last location of my cursor I forgot that beside it was run (since I was used to just hitting right to swap pokemon) and hit run. I was so sad.

Tho it's still a bit tedious, there is a way to move pokemon around without having to add them to your party on gen 2, if you hit "Move pkmn not holding mail" or something along those lines it'll give you acess to all 14 boxes and your party and you can move them around as you like, like I said still tedious, but so so so much better then adding to party and depositing them
Just a small tidbit here on the roamer hunt: you can have a fainted pokemon in the first slot for repel trick, while still leading the encounter with a fast sleeper :)
Repels don’t work with fainted Pokémon. They will go off of the next Pokémon in your party that is capable of fighting. So if you have a fainted Pokémon at say level 34 and a level 100 Pokémon second, you just won’t encounter the roamer still

@@tanningbed I was actually curious if it was only gen 2 so I tested it and it does not work. You might be confusing it with people having a fainted illuminate Pokémon in the front of their party for shiny hunting. As out of battle effects for abilities still work even if the Pokémon is fainted

When I was looking at the bulbapedia page for Dudunsparce to see what the odds were after the game first came out, I saw that it says that a Dunsparce with a Hardy Nature from a gen 3 game has a 1 in 4 chance of becoming a 3 segment form Dudunsparce! (Still at the start of the video)
Unfortunately since natures don’t exist in gen 2, I believe the value for the 3 segment is rolled once sent into bank and isn’t based off of the gender. However I plan to shiny hunt the 3 segment in gen 3 and that will make finding out what it evolves into much easier!
For the Beasts I used a Haunter that I gave vitamins for speed; it has mean look and hypnosis. I'm also doing a similar challenge; living dex with all pokemon from their debut games. Tho I'm not doing genders or using old pokemon for evolutions/forms from newer games. I am collecting the genders but not making them come from the originals as long as I have one gender that is from the debut game. genders and forms I putting in boxes at the end personally. So far I have gen 1 and 2 done and I've been kinda doin gens 3-5 at the same time cause gen 4 and 5 wont let you transfer pokemon up until you reach a certain spot or task later in the game.

In Gen 2, if you use Move Pokemon w/o mail you can move everything around super easy. Never have to move things to your party. Just can't duplicate anything this way because it saves after every move.
The saving makes it feel so slow tbh. It was honestly faster in gen 1 even though it had to save every time as well
@@ThedomiNATION that's fair. It just depends what you're trying to accomplish. Compared to Gen 1 it's still a million times faster.

For future reference… only the Original Trainer ID can change a caught Pokémon’s name. Once you trade it the new owner of the Pokémon can not change the Pokémon’s name. You need to change the name on your Gen 2 file first where it was caught.
That’s incorrect. In sword and shield (and I believe also scarlet and violet) you can change a Pokémon’s name if you aren’t the original trainer. You can only do this if the Pokémon hasn’t been nicknamed already and after you change the name you won’t be able to do it again. That’s why I tried changing Mr. Mime’s name in sword and shield. I figured it wouldn’t work though as it’s name for some reason was MR.MIME and not the proper Mr. Mime so the game sees it as already being nicknamed
@@ThedomiNATION I can confirm that this is also true in Scarlet and Violet. 🙂 As someone who ONLY uses nicknamed Pokemon, I absolutely love this feature, because I can finally use Pokemon I get from trades. (except foreign pokemon, sadly...)
Still praying for the day they announce a switch Stadium title where we can amass our mons from home into one game sort of like how you could copy your PC boxes from DPPt & HGSS into Battle Revolution

I love the Mr. Mime Name bug, gotta love them not implementing a check to change the period in Mr. Mime's name when it goes through Transporter. It uses the wrong period in its name in gens 1 and 2.

My Plan is exactly the same between gen 1 and 2 but I also try to get every Pokemon and its evolutions in prior gens at the lowest levels

In G/S/C/HG/SS if turn your Radio to the Mysterious Broadcast while in the Ruins of Alph you'll have better odds of finding an Unknown you haven't encountered/Caught yet...

Hey i have a question for the repell trick. Does every pokemon in my team need to be under Level 40 or should only my first one be under 40.
Only first Pokémon in your party. It needs to not be fainted though or else it’ll go off of the next Pokémon in your party!

Irc there was a glitch in Gen 2,l; if you used mean look on one of the legendary dogs, it would make them uncatchable if they used roar.
That’s in fire red and leaf green! I made sure to double check though before attempting to catch them!

I dont know why everyone makes the gen 2 roamers look so hard to get. Just go to the route west of ekrutek city with like 40 super repels and keep running back and forth in the grass. You wont fight any poke and after a while even without switching routes yourself the roamers will. You'll find at least 2 of them with 40 super repels. You could also run for a bit and if nothing go back into the building between the route and the city and then back to the route to have the roamers reset their locations. Just have poke with mean look and/or sleep powder on standby as well as a poke with false swipe or super fang.
There’s a mechanic in the gen 2 games that essentially makes it so you can’t just go between two routes back and forth. Yes it’s possible to find a roamer that way but it is extremely unlikely. If you go between two routes the roamer will just bounce back and forth between two routes until you start changing routes again. Along with that, the roamer has an extremely high rate of changing routes if you encounter a different Pokémon from it. So even when you get the roamer on the same route, you are still kind of unlikely to actually encounter it. And repel tricks can help that, but you need a level 40 Pokémon that can prevent them from fleeing that is also faster than them and that’s hard to do for someone just trying to catch all the Pokémon. All of these mechanics got removed in gen 3 and roamers from gen 3 and onward are WAY easier to catch. But that doesn’t go without saying luck plays a huge factor. I managed to find and catch raikou extremely quick and entei I for sure got unlucky with it in terms of catching. But yeah the gen 2 roamers are in general significantly harder to track down and catch than the other gen roamers
@@ThedomiNATION you don't have to change routes though, you just have to keep running on the same route with the repels active. They will change location after a while even if you dontmchange routes. Just get a lvl 40 use the super repel and keep running. I do this every time i play a gen 2 game to get all the dogs before claire.
With pokémon like Bellossom and Slowking. I caught the first forms on my pokémon Red version. I then transferred them to my pokémon silver and evolved them. Then I sent them to Home, but it says they are from the Johto region. Is there any way to get this to say originally from the Kanto region?
It says whatever region they were sent up from. That’s why I traded the jynx and Mr mime back to a gen 1 game before sending them up. Unfortunately there’s no way to get those Pokémon back to a gen 1 game after evolving so you’d have to evolve them in a later game after sending them up from red and blue first

Just to talk (and Flex a bit 😅) i've completed my livingdex with every regionale variant, but not from the originale games, everyone with 6ivs and with egg moves. I had too much free time

Weird question but with the Mr. mime and jynx situation. How do you trade from gen 2 back to gen 1? Do you need a 2nd 3ds to trade?
Yes. In this case, I had a 2DS and a new 3DS XL

do you recommend soulsilver or crystal for johto dex
Neither game you can get every johto Pokémon due to version exclusives. It would be easier to send the Pokémon straight from Crystal VC to bank then home. But SoulSilver would have normal catch rates and probably be easier overall!
So what can you do about the jynx and mr.mime in gen 1 if you don't have someone to trade with for gen 2 to 1 and you don't have another 3ds that has the games on there?
Essentially you either just have to accept the npc traded ones or use glitches like the mew glitch to get yourself your own mr mime and jynx

@@calvinmartz3181 the mew glitch is very safe as long as you save before doing it. People do it thousands of times to shiny hunt in it actually!

I probably won’t ever buy capture cards for 3ds or ds. They’re so expensive and I would want at least 4 for my games. The only thing I would consider doing is trying to fix my current capture card I have on my 3ds but even then I’d be worried I’d mess something up
I want to say only Hardy dunsparce pre gen 5 can evolve into dudunsparce and its a 1 in 4 chance.
Not sure where you got that info from. But the 3 segment dudunsparce is determined by a hidden value that was introduced in gen 6. Upon sending dunsparce from older games into bank, it’ll randomly assign the value and it’s still the normal 1/100 chance.

Since Natures don't exist in gen 2 I guess it wouldn't have the personality coded that way so ig it wouldn't work anyways
@@GiovannisDaedra oh my gosh lol I just completely misinterpreted the numbers though! That’s on me. I just saw the 1/4 chance and took that as the incorrect value. If hardy natures result in a 1/4 chance at a 3 segment and there’s 25 different natures, that would still make it a 1/100 chance. Thank you for sharing the info with the source though I was actually unaware that’s how it worked! I assumed the encryption constant was generated completely separately upon transferring into bank! My bad!
@@ThedomiNATION yeah technically the same odds when you encounter a dunsparce but I guess it saves transferring every gen 3/4 dunsparce to check nc you only have to check the Hardy ones. Gen 2 probably doesn't have the personality value set tho so kinda worthless for this
