    Want to recommend "a lot of soap, a little water at a time" as a general method. Matt is used to this stuff, for most beginners I think it makes more sense to GRADUALLY add water and swirl on for a solid minute or two until you get the consistency you want. Easiest with a "croap" right from the tub (if the tub is big enough, otherwise scoop some out into a dedicated shaving bowl - in that situation same thing applies, scoop over a little at a time, add more only as needed). Also, Proraso can be a little bit tricky - it's a bit "lumpy" and it requires very little water. So you're not going nuts if it doesn't work perfectly immediately. Very little water, a lot of soap, patience.

      Again, many parts described in your comment are what I do. One difference is that I will take about one-eighth teaspoon (for most soaps) and flatten this onto a bowl bottom. I then use a brush to gradually add water, mixing in to form a lather. I prefer soaps which are either hard or firm enough so I can scoop or slice or scrape the quantity that I want.

    I made the mistake of "too dry" with both cream and soap. My experiences have been 1000% better since I learned to WET shave.

    I scoop and bowl lather. I've found the key is spreading the soap out in the bowl, nice and thin, and put in .25 - .5 teaspoon of water to let it bloom while showering. I then add very small amounts of water as I lather. I build a very thick lather in a short time.
    Great video, Matt.

    It's taken me 2 years to feel confident lathering all the ways you've shown in your video. I started out with a set that had a hard soap in a mug. Then I face lathered harder soaps. Only in the past year have I used creams. The white proraso is my choice travel soap. Good video once again.

    I am on the croap right now but I found that I wasn't applying enough pressure on the brush. Once I put a little more force on it I found the lather showed up right away. So my amateur tip is to not be afraid of a little pressure with the brush, use it with authority.

    The only shaving soap I can recall having a difficult time with is old Williams Shaving Soap in the 1990s. Of course I had no idea how to lather and had probably the worst shaving brush imaginable, so I’m not surprised it didn’t go well. When I finally went back to Shaving soap, I never used Williams again and now of course it is no longer with us.

    Excellent ! I thought it was just me making a huge mess, but I guess that’s what you need to do To get a lather.

    • @10floz30minutes
      @10floz30minutes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A mess is not necessary. Use bowl for EITHER a bowl lather or a face-lather. A pump squirt bottle is great for delivering water to the stuff in the bowl or into the brush; and bring this brush with the squirts of water onto the face if making a face lather. All very neat, usually no lather falling anywhere- well, maybe occasionally.

    The thing I agree with out of this video is it takes way less time to get a good lather than some people seem to think. Pay attention to what you are doing and look for the lather you want and then you are good.

    I prefer the hard pucks, they keep much better for long periods and I just put them in my hand like you did and lather. With pucks you can also simply use your hands and rub the puck on your face like bar soap. I wish artisans would make the hard pucks and shave sticks.

  • @BartBuzz
    @BartBuzz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    A very helpful lathering tutorial for beginners. My only comment has to do with shaving creams. They don't have to be in a tube. Shaving creams in a container, like TOBS and Trumper, are as easy to use as those in the tube. Just place a pea-sized amount on the brush and lather away.

    • @robertcochran7103
      @robertcochran7103 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. I have tubs. I do prefer the Trumper cream tubes because they are smaller, but the tubs are just as portable. In some respects tubs are easier to use. Depends on the user, of course. I find that cream hardness can vary depending on brand and the specific ingredients -- the formulation.

    • @BartBuzz
      @BartBuzz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@robertcochran7103 I also think tubs are a better bargain. I learned that after getting TOBS Sandalwood in the tube. You get twice the amount in a tub for the same price.

  • @stephentarleton433
    @stephentarleton433 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Interestingly when I started wet shaving I went in reverse order of your video. My first soaps were vegan pucks from a local soap maker. I found these hard to lather, likely due to inexperience. I moved to hard soaps with greater success as my experience grew. I tried a few creams along the way which I never felt as comfortable with. Most recently I’ve been using the REX tallow croaps. The loading experience took some getting used to from hard soaps, at least from me. But the lather and scents are pure luxury! All in all it’s a fun journey. Try everything and keep your favorites in rotation.

    Thanks Matt. I’ve never had a problem lathering any soap including Mitchell’s, sapoficinio varesino, and Tabac. I will say though that my very first soap was Johnny Slick’s vanilla scented-I did not know any better then, but it turned out to be the worse soap on the market. I thought it was me that couldn’t make a lather, but it was the product. I’m not sure how they get good reviews.

    Thank you for posting this excellent video. I noticed the email announcement right away this morning, and I of course consider it well worth the time to study. I've a very small collection of Trumper and TOBS tubs. I've read about Mitchell's Wool Fat, and your recent Double Edge Discourse videos make me realize I ought to try out a wider variety of creams, croaps and pucks. Practicing my lathering technique would also increase my experience with my new Rx Envoy XL razor. I notice that in this video, you didn't use the pre-shave bar we see. And oh....one more thought...why not get your sink connected to hot and cold water sources? I guess most folks want to shave with hot water available. If you have hot water, you will probably feel better, and we can see how the lathering and shaving experiences are influenced by water temperature.

    All in on Face Lather..
    I used to bowl lather and prefer to spend the energy letting the brush work on the face and head. Have to assume their exfoliation benefit in there somewhere🤷🏼‍♂️
    Because of this, I now favor Hard Soaps where I don’t mind brush loading off the hard Puck (MWF, MDC, SV, Etc).
    I don’t tub load out of my soft soaps🤷🏼‍♂️. I scoop. I can still build a base paste in the bowl and then go to face/head to build the lather, but it’s an extra step that I skip with a hard soap.

If any of you ladies and gentlemen have any problems with sensitive skin, I would highly recommend picking up a bar of razor emporium pre shave soap, I don’t only use it before shaving, but my face doesn’t get touched in the shower, immediately after I dry off I head to the sink and rinse my face with cold water and wash with that preshave soap and rinse with cold water again, it makes my face feel great 😊

I think the main thing is having a good brush either a badger or quality synthetic. You don't have to spend alot on a brush, cream or soap to get a good lather. My main go to's are proraso, D.R. Harris, TOBS and Cella. Finally I have Tabac soap and cologne for a night out or special occasion.

    I always lather in the bowl, creams, croaps, hard soaps. All my croaps and hard soaps must stay dry. Water won't touch them in their original form. I scoop soft croaps or I peel hard soaps - yes, with a classical potato peeler. Two to three thicker soap shavings get pressed into the lathering bowl. When they stick flat on the surface of the bowl I lather them with brush without problems. So do I avoid the contact of my soaps with water and the need to let them dry on air.

    I just don't understand how anyone can have trouble getting a lather out of Mitchell's. I have really hard water, treated with a water softener, and it lathers like a champ for me. Unfortunately I'm sensitive to something in it and had to stop using it. I believe face lathering is easier than bowl lathering because you will quickly develop a feel for the proper consistency.

    I'm sure it was intentional, however, I am a bit sad you didn't include a shave stick. Some beginners do start with an Arko stick, which can be tricky if you've never done it.

I use a bowl for all of them. Creme is better for the shave becasue of the lubrication. But, I prefer the smell released by the soap when applying it. For the puck I was indifferent. To be fair the puck was a vanderhagen. After many different products I think I'm a Proraso Green man for life.

    You did miss the stick option. You need to amend the video and do that.

    Excellent tips for lathering. I bowl lather and use the same techniques you use to build a lather. Do you ever bowl lather? If so, do you ever scoop the soap first?

    Another great video Matt. I have very sensitive skin and use the Proraso Sensitive Skin soap like the one in this video. It really helps with the irritation, but I also have very dry skin coupled with very hard city water. It feels like my face really dries out too much after using this (or any) soap. Would the Proraso Sensitive Skin Cream from a tube be a better option? Any other recommendations? Thank you!

    There are only 2 shave soaps/creams I've thrown out before I finished them: Cremo & Supply. I'd refer people to the cheapest drug store glycerine shave soap over those products and you'ld get superior results.

    I've used a few different soaps. Some are way more difficult to lather, for sure. Some artisan soaps I've found to be more difficult to lather than Taylor of Old Bond Street and some bar soaps.

    Great tutorial....one question: how do you care for the hard puck after you lather with it? Just rinse it off and let it dry somehow? Don't rinse it off and put it in a container of some sort? Thanks for the videos!

    • @RazorEmporium
      @RazorEmporium  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you take pieces from the disc or puck and use a bowl then you never worry about that. Just put the puck or disc or bar into a plastic container with a lid. Brush never needs to touch the main soap.

    For some reason I have no trouble at all with Mitchell’s. The only “secret” is that a few minutes before my shave I moisten the puck slightly- just a couple of drops.
    Given the problems some people have with Mitchell’s, I wonder if there are particular minerals that cause it problems. Just spitballing here, but suppose calcium doesn’t cause problems, but iron (or something else) does?

    • @10floz30minutes
      @10floz30minutes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Calcium and Magnesium ions in high enough concentration can interfere with creating form (and lather). This is well known; but this here video the lathers were made using hard water - but just what the hardness value is of the water, we were not told. If you really want to try, see what you can do using distilled water.

    I'm very new to wet shaving. Is it possible to over work the soap? I bought a cream and worked it into a good lather, but I still got razor burn from the shave. Maybe I held the angle of the razor wrong?

    Very funny (and messy) video 🤣🤣🤣 And of course, very informative too. I'm just curious about face lathering with a synthetic brush. Right now the brush I use is a synthetic Mühle and face lathering seems impossible because the hair is too "springy" (for lack of a proper word, sorry, English is not my mother tongue) and it is impossible to press the brush against the skin for mixing. It launches soapy water everywhere and lather is very poor. I want to switch to a badger brush but I'm just curious about the idiosyncrasies of synthetic brushes. I also own a boar brush, a Semogue 2000 but it is just TOO BIG and swallows a lot of product, so I don't use it.

    • @RazorEmporium
      @RazorEmporium  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with you as to most synthetic brushes. They don't compare to badger

    • @10floz30minutes
      @10floz30minutes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Synthetic bristled brush simply requires more time for making the lather.

  • @RoderickGMacLeod
    @RoderickGMacLeod 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    YES! HYDRATION! Too many people make underhydrated lather in their quest to have thick rich lather with "cushion" as if their face is a sofa and their razor is a pair of buttocks. They end up with thick, gummy, sticky lather that doesn't flow through the razor with ease. Lather must flow to carry cut stubble away from the blade. So what if it drips a bit at the beginning or little blobs go flying when you face lather?
    Hard to lather? Try a puck of Marvy.

    My first hard soap was a Geo. F. Trumper puck, but I was unable to form a normal, thick lather with it, it always ended up as a bubbly, thin slurry. Now I've tried it with my quality brush to see what the results are. Still terrible.

    • @RazorEmporium
      @RazorEmporium  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      sounds like a technique issue - use more product, and spend 1-2 min face lathering.

    Big Daddy doesn't introduce water to his soaps because I measure and bowl lather. The only exception is when I am traveling. That's when I tub load with a cheap-ass soap like Proraso.

    much soap, be stingy, you can always add more soap.
