  • The new Hobbywing Axe RC Rock Crawling system! I test the system on the rocks compared to two other brushless combos, then lay down the conclusions! What do you think after watching?
    Axe 2300kv street price about $209
    Mamba X/ Puller Pro 540 2200kv street price about $280
    Sidewinder 4/ Revolver 540 1800kv street price about $145

      HolmesHobbies do you have a bouncer or a u4 rig of some sort you could do a demo comparison. You already know your products are way more than capable. Would still be interesting to see.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pullers are often #1 podium spot on the u4 circuit, so they are indeed capable :) I won't have the hobbywing system for long enough to throw into a bouncer though. I did do full trigger drags runs on the pavement in 2nd gear, and we will have the footage edited into another quick vid. It illustrates the lagging acceleration.

      Great footage. But how can you review a system that directly competes with the motor systems the you design and sell?
      It seems really negatively biased and is really contrary to the experiences many are having with the Axe system. Just truly do not understand why you would review a competitor and try to sound trustworthy.

    • @shannoncold
      @shannoncold 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you did a fantastic job in reviewing and comparing your competitors offering. The direct comparisons and test platforms remove any bias towards your own products. You also clearly state that they are your opinions and encourage people to watch other reviews. Thanks for this, looking forward to my revolver arriving on Monday!

    Over the years I have used and abused all 3 systems and would agree with you re the Castle system. Castle has really got their act together. Their a lot more reliable than they used to be, the sidewinders were always prone to failures

    Setting expo on one and not the other is also not a fair comparison.

    Interesting... I gotta say I feel that I have achieved a similar effect by following the old school Holmes Hobbies Moto... Gear down & Volt up. With how I set my rigs up I can hold a steady 10% throttle and as it takes on a load by encountering an obstacle the high voltage and low gearing create enough torque to maintain the same low speed control and smooth startup simply using the BLE pro and a Puller Pro even in the higher kv range. When I do it with the revolver it is simply unmatched. I am going to be doing the Mamba X/Revolver combo with my anti-spur layout and a 10:1 soon just to see how far I can take it. Basically the Marlin crawler gearing of the scale world lol! Great episode John and props on the set! It looks great!

    I agree. I like to have that audio feedback. Especially after running a system for awhile you can tell where you are in the throttle & torque curves & you know when your putting to much load & doing damage. My opinion the Hobbywing from what I saw it'll be a good trail system with small obstacles & inclines & dissents.

    @rcrehab9623 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have to say I have alot of respect for you Mr. Holmes but it truly felt like this whole video was about making sure to discount any "perks" that this system may have. It really felt like it was finding a way to use the "perks" of this system and turn them all into negatives. Now I do plan to get this system myself . So I will see for myself. Now the fact it doesn't have a throttle curve is a bummer but this system can only be healthy for the crawler ESC and motor market.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I certainly didn't start with the intent of discrediting the system, this is simply an honest review. In the sense that I didn't like a side effect of the velocity loop, I agree that perks turned into negatives. A "perk" of the system caused a lack of torque control, which I really didn't like. For the encoder, I really have to wonder where the extra resolution is being used if I can't feel or empirically test an improvement. There is likely 1028 positions per revolution, as compared to 12 for a standard sensored 4 pole. The reason to use sensors and encoders is for zero and low RPM accuracy, yet the standard sensored system with less resolution was starting at lower speed on the bench and on the rocks. Even the sensorless system was starting slower, and this kinda blew me away. You won't know for yourself without trying it out though, I'm sure there are plenty of people that might like how it drives. But, my honest opinion is that I would not install this into a rig and keep it.

    Some real nice info, thanks. I've always had brushed motors and looking to get my first brushless setup. I was looking at the Hobbywing Axe, but from this review I think for my driving style I would be better off with a Mamba X. The Sidewinder 4 isn't something I'm even looking at because that much noise coming from the ESC would drive me nuts. Though I think the Axe would be an excellent setup for trail, it doesn't look so great for crawling... unless you "enjoy" (and can afford) working on your rig replacing broken parts.
    Throttle control is sort of an old school skill. Like in today's drag racing cars and super cars they just jam the throttle to the floor and rely on the rev limiter to prevent them from blowing their engine. Back in my day you had no fancy rev limiter and had to manually control the throttle. I prefer old school where you need skill and talent rather than rely on technology to do it for you because you don't have the skill to do it yourself. I see the same thing in drones, people just jam the gimbals (joysticks) to their extremes and rely on technology to get them smooth video rather than learn throttle control and smooth flying skills.

ALL the Hobbywing Systems are smoother, slower to drive uphill and downhill, 4 times slower ! and the dragbrake holds the rigg in trhe hill like weldet. So i dont understand what you are doing here? I know I am late but this was great! I have the TRX4 w/SW4 and MX HH Revolver both are the bomb. I pulled out an old Novak Ballistic Crawler 18.5T and I haven't got the low speed control of the PP. Is there a programing setup I should try to come close to the PP? Or do I need to just buy the PP for quiet trailing. But I do miss the feedback from the Revolver. I am usually 6 to 10 feet away from the truck so it's never too loud when crawling. I would like to ask if you can do the same video with your brushed motors on the Castle systems since they both will run brushed motors as well.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jerry! You will be rather limited by the Ballistic, it inherently has a high startup RPM due to the stator shape and rotor diameter. Which brushed motors in particular are you interested in seeing next to each other?

    • @jerrywatson1958
      @jerrywatson1958 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trailmaster w/Top Hat, along with the TM Pro, and a Crawlmaster, you can select the best turns to use. Also include a HW 1080 esc and a Torquemaster BR-XL, if you could please. I believe you get what you pay for in electronics (and I've wasted a lot of $ w/HW) but some people have to see it side by side to believe it. After today's run I think you are correct about the Ballistic. I started last year with the stock brushed motor and really liked the low speed control, but when I upgraded to the Revolver I was shocked at what low speed control and torque I was able to get. I am like you very picky and will be putting the SW4 & Revolver back in. I am going to get a Puller Pro next for the MX to go in my Ascender.

    I respect holmes hobbies for sure and that this is an adversary to his Holmes line of products. But I just got my hands on a hobbywing axe 540 2300kv, and its amazing(coming from a hobbywing 1080 crawler esc and a 27t hackmoto). Whisper quiet, crazy good low end torque control, incredible low speed control and torque. I think as well it pumps more throttle input based on load to keep movement really smooth..
    My only downside on the hobbywing is that the motor is 100% proprietary to the esc as it has different plugs and different sensors, and the hobbywing warranty is only 30 days. I've honestly never had to call hobbywing warranty up owning many Hobbywing Esc's myself...
    I mainly got an AXE for efficiency as for the trail runs I do brushed motors are really inefficient.

    THAT probably saved a bunch of people, a lot of money!! Thanks John, thorough as expected. I completely agree with you, and am at least almost as picky as you.
    I've got a pretty good analogy for this comparison.... When I can buy a Car again (a real one), it will Never be a new one! Why? *Drive by Wire.* When you step on the gas, the Pedal is connected to a potentiometer - not a Cable!! Your right foot is now talking to the ECM, processes the Vehicle's parameters compared to your Pedal command, and THE ECM then decides how much to actually open the Throttle Plates on the Engine!!! 😱😣😫😫
    YOU are no longer in complete control of your Vehicle. The ECM now doesn't think you are competent enough to decide!!!
    The Axe System, though Cool, and will likely impress some, takes that Control away from your Throttle Finger. I really feel the same way you do. I'd fear for my Rig, while IT decides to twist my Axle or snap my Driveshaft - WITHOUT warning, if my eye should stray for just a moment!!
    I LOVE the new Sidewinder 4 with your Revolver!!! 👍👍👏👏👏👏 I would have to look for a quieter Motor (of Yours), still Sensorless, because my Budget definitely can't do more....
    Even though your Outrunner is nothing short of Amazing, my Wife will not put up with the noise...
    The Mamba X with your Puller Pro is also a fantastic runner, and QUIET! But way over my tiny Budget.
    No matter what, like you, I want to Control my Rig - not the other way around!!
    Carmine 💥 ⛽

    I've always been annoyed with my brushless X/PP combo in that it wouldn't maintain speed when turning or climbing for a given throttle. Im excited to try this new system as it may be my answer. Now I can lock in my speed and focus on my line without worrying about my throttle getting bogged down. I'm a noob tho.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might like it if your biggest hurdle driving is throttle control! You do already have a universal controller, and could get better speed regulation and less bogging with a Revolver motor. If you are looking for that part of the feel at a lower cost to buying a whole system, it would be one of your options.

    After watching this review, and reading some of the comments here. It would sure seen that there is a definite bias from Holmes, who is a HobbyWing competitor. This was expected. But reading some of the comments here, it is amusing to see so many clearly brainwashed by Holmes. I mean, I do agree with Holmes on many subject's myself, and I am a fan of Holmes Hobbies product's as well. But to say this is for noobs is laughable, and a clear bias. I spent the money for the Axe FOC combo for myself. And I must say it is a game changer. I did open the motor after countless mud runs, and splashing around, and I found no moisture. Even the bearings have a rubber gasket over them. I did find 12 staggered magnets inside. I'm no motor builder like Holmes Hobbies or HobbyWing, but I assume it has something to do with this motors abilities. So, contrary to Holmes noobs theory, if you want a chance at winning any crawler competitions, you may have to spend the cash yourself. Here is why. Once you crawl over any obstacle, there is no other system available that is capable of stopping your roll down hill effectively, like the HW Axe Foc can. Crossing a steep teetie tottering bridge for instance. And the one thing that sold it for me was, there is no annoying high pitch motor noise, like the 14 pole Holmes Revolver.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MambaX and SW4 both have active rectification which slows down a rig while "on throttle" downhill. I still don't like the velocity loop of the system, which is what makes it drive like it does. I want torque control, not RPM control. It's a personal preference, just my opinion. But, the basic issues of having very weak torque and power delivery are still there too, along with it really being no smoother than many other choices on the market. It's a good first attempt by Hobbywing. It's good for drivers that haven't or don't want to learn throttle control, which is mostly newbies. It does negate the need to learn how to predict a motor's response to terrain. Outside of that it falls short of many other systems in startup smoothness, torque, power, and RPM envelope- falling short in 4 very important areas just isn't game changing.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll also say, it's my honest opinion. I wouldn't stick my neck out and put out a garbage or false review. I almost didn't release this one because it wasn't so positive, but was convinced by others to do it anyway. There are upsides to the system, for sure. Low noise, a good hill hold, smooth enough for most drivers. The velocity loop is something I can't get past. And the torque, power, and rpm envelope are unequivocally industry worst in the brushless crawling segment. All in all, I can't give it a shining review because it misses so many marks that are important to ME as a driver.

Exhaustive work on your part to try and see just what the "new" configuration of the AXE system brings to the table.This video leads me to the conclusion that I got my bases covered with 1 rig running a brushed HH TrailMaster Pro 550 21t / HW 1080 ESC, 1 rig with a HH Revolver 1800kv / Mamba X, and 1 rig with a HH PP "R" 540-L 4100kv / Mamba Monster X. Don't know of any niche in there that needs this AXE system. Rock On with your tie-dyed self, JRH!

    Imagine this AXE system in 1200kv in 2 speed rig, like trx4 kit or scx10-2 kit. This technology will only get better, hopefully firmware upgrades from HW. This is likely as close as you can get to brushed. I definitely supporting this system and have one on order. Even as early adapter, I want support this. I expected CASTLE to be the pioneer of this, but HW it is.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The FOC has a lot of downsides, honestly. Primarily, you are stuck with one motor choice. I have talked with Castle in depth about this and they will always make ESCs universal. This does not at all feel like driving a brushed motor though. I don't know why HW keeps saying this. The lack of torque control is completely the opposite of what makes brushed controllable.

    Hi, this is my first Holmes Hobbies YT video - and it won’t be my last - a well put together review! My TRX-4 motor burnt out after about 1 year of very regular use (mostly trailing rather than stressful crawling) and I have been told this is a pretty good lifespan for a crawling motor - which has to put up with high current and low speeds which is far worse than in road cars and planes for example. In the UK a Titan motor is nearly £27 ($36) which to me is a bit steep for a can motor for 1 year. I have been recommended your Holmes motors, but can’t find them in the UK… do you have a supplier here?
    A UK based hobby shop recommended this AXE system, but after your comprehensive review I don't think so this time round!
