    ( tfl-studios.com/ ) You can now get an "off-road" version of practically any size truck or SUV these days, including some big three-row options like the GMC Yukon AT4. Most folks wouldn't dare take their SUV off the beaten path, but that doesn't mean this rig can't do it. It's more capable than you might think!

    Not an off-roader by any measure, but I've watched 90% of the videos this channel produces. Out of all of those videos, maybe my novice is really showing, but I've NEVER heard or saw a vehicle go off-road like this and make it look like I'm doing my routine work out at the gym in 2WD only. This is great!
    Keep it up guys!

New tech from Jeep and GMC vs old school tried and True Toyota. Resulting in the offroad 4x4 full size SUV of the year.

There hasn't been much, or trustworthy coverage out there, it's nice to see it on a trail. We know from a channel that we trust. Trust. Find an older 3/4 ton Suburban or Yukon with the 6.0l gasser as long as the oil's been changed and the transmission has been serviced they'll run 300-400k miles pretty easy and then you just rebuild / replace whatever and keep going. A lot cheaper than 80 grand. I mean you won't have the fancy tech and air ride or lockers but hey with a little bit of money you can outfit older vehicles with that stuff.

    I picked my 2022 AT4 Yukon XL up this past Friday after trading my 2019 Ram 1500 Limited. Great vehicle so far. My gripes are: 1. Turning the auto high-beams on is a PITA if not impossible. 2. It does not have adaptive cruise control (but has all the functions of ACC, however it is disabled.) 3. There is no handle on the driver side pillar to make getting into the vehicle easier, but there is one on the passenger side. 4. not enough storage compartments. Cant wait to get this up thing up into the mountains.

    • @cameronp2951
      @cameronp2951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a Ford but this may apply to all vehicles, When my lights are on auto, the auto high beams will be automatically applied at night. I have my lights on at all times for safety. When I put the lights to on instead of on auto, I have to apply the high beams manually. Also when in auto light mode I can turn my high beams on manually but pushing forward on the stalk or can turn it(auto high beams) off completely by pushing the stalk 2 times. So pretty much the GM procedure may be the same way. Hopefully this helps

    • @wesshepard
      @wesshepard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree about the adaptive cruise control. For how much this thing costs it should have that feature

    • @joshuarodrique2096
      @joshuarodrique2096 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here’s how the auto high beams work on my Buick. I’m thinking it’s the same in your Yukon because parts bin GM:
      There’s a auto high beam button on the turn signal stalk about halfway down. Once you push that button, the auto high beams are always enabled even after you park the car and restart. In the cluster the headlight symbol should have an “A” in it whenever the headlights are on. This means the auto high beams are enabled.
      If for some reason you want to manually control the high beams, flick the stalk forward and they’ll come on. The stalk bounces back to the normal position and doesn’t stick forward like a normal car (similar to when you pull it forward to flash). If you want to turn them off flick it forward again or pull towards you.
      Hopefully this helps. The Buick auto high beams work better than the ones in my Nissan so I always just let the car do it’s thing.

      @joshuarodrique2096 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wesshepard It’s a crying shame because GM has one of the best radar cruise control systems on the market but they restrict it to the top trim levels.
      They also nerf their lane centering on everything other than a Cadillac. My Buick will negotiate curves then all of a sudden go “Wait! I’m not a Caddy!” and steer out of it’s lane. Lane centering isn’t necessary to me because it tracks so straight but I’m thankful for acc. Could never go back.

    • @dedalliance1
      @dedalliance1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean really it's for going camping, to the lake, snow, going to the ski resort, maybe driving on a beach although it's heavy so not advised for that lol. I mean it's a traditional SUV meaning Sport Utility Vehicle, so it's a vehicle with utility designed to get you to the area to do sports. No one's really taking this to go hunting or working a ranch I mean you could technically but like they said at 80k dollars that's a little insane when a truck is about half of that.

    Let's hope the 6.2 comes with AFM disabled. So many lifter issues with these and the 5.3 with AFM. In fact, just remove AFM from the entire lineup so we don't have buy aftermarket AFM disable modification. I would rather take the fuel economy hit than an engine replacement.
    Also stop putting 20in wheels for all off road models (AT4). The first thing people replace is the useless 20in wheel and stock tires. People want 17in or 18in wheels with better A/T tires on their off-road oriented rig (16in if anyone still make them and if it will fit over the brake calipers).

    Lol they are amazed that the fancy clutch pack LSD eventually worked, when the G80 mechanical locker on the previous trucks would go to 100% lock immediately under wheelspin. I had a Tahoe Z71 with the G80 and it was phenomenal. If it could clear the approach and breakover angles that truck would do it.
    All that really matters off-road is clearance, 4 wheel drive, lockers, and tires. The rest is fluff at best, or cheaper and designed to fail at worst.

    • @brannonbenjamin203

      I completely agree! I’m looking at a great deal on a used 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline but am worried about it’s low approach, breakover, and departure angles in comparison to others like this one. What do you think? Thanks @maxon1672

    • @maxon1672
      @maxon1672 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@brannonbenjamin203 I would absolutely pick the Chevy Z71 / GMC AT4 trucks over the Ford Timberline appearance package. You at least get a V8 and nicer styling with the GM vehicles, as well as some functionality. That being said, none of these current generation GM or Ford SUVs are truly designed with off-roading in mind.
      If you look at the rear lower control arms on the Expedition, and now on the current gen GM SUVs you can see they hang just inches off the ground. This presents another significant obstacle clearance issue that can't be mitigated with a lift kit or air springs. The solid axle was so much better, and imo had no negative impact on ride.
      With the death of the solid axle on the Chevy and GMC, the only good truck based SUV left is the Sequoia. My only gripe with it is that the only engine option is a turbo V6 hybrid... I'll never understand why there isn't even a V8 option with the new 10 speed. Alas, this is the world we live in!
      If you're actually going to be off roading with the thing, I would suggest an older Tahoe/Suburban 4x4 from 2003 up till 2020. There is nothing functionally better about the new ones. You can even get a 2003 with comfy leather heated seats, power folding mirrors, Bose stereo, power adjustable pedals, 4 wheel drive, and 18-20 mpg!
      As with everything, newer is not necessarily better, and older is not necessarily worse. I hope you find a truck you can enjoy!

    Enjoyed this video. Useful info. Thanks for doing it. A few quick questions: I imagine that with that air suspension you can't add another inch or two to the height if you wanted to, is that correct? Do you know, am I correct in my understanding that other than the approach angle and smaller wheel/larger rubber 20" wheels on the AT4, the partial skid plates I guess too, that the mechanics of how it operates, are basically the same on the Yukon Denali?...
    I ask because I like both the Denali and AT4, and though I will take whichever off road to get to a fishing or camping spot or some other destination via a dirt road, I really no longer do classic "off roading". I'm actually more concerned about maximizing safe and effective handling in bad winter weather in ski country, since snow storm days are the best skiing days for powder so I need to be able to get anywhere anytime any kind of weather, but still have a very comfortable highway drive year round. I would of course get dedicated snow tires for Thanksgiving to Easter for whichever vehicles I got.
    On a side note, I was planning on likely getting all black on whichever vehicle I purchase, maybe adding a chrome delete job on the Denali after the fact, but I have to say, that dark gray on the vehicle in your video is beautiful looking too, so I am now considering that, at least if I go the AT4 route. I'd also love it if I decide on the Yukon Denali, if I could get those same size 275/60R20 wheels from the AT4 on it as an option, maybe at the dealer level if not the factory, I have to look into that. Just a little concerned about the 22" wheels on the Denali Ultimate, especially if off road or on less well maintained roads. In any case, thanks for input on the two questions up top at least.

    Why is the rear suspension design so low to the ground? You can see daylight between the trailing arms and the top of the frame.

    • @timlong1462
      @timlong1462 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s crazy how low they made the arms. Looks like they would grab everything on the trail. It’s gotta be because of the big air bags above them. Doesn’t really matter though, it’s just a big minivan without sliding doors. Nobody is actually taking this off road.

    • @wp31144
      @wp31144 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even the base Tahoes/Suburbans without air suspension are low. Your right prob needed to make a design to fit air suspension. BUT it’s still a poor design and would love @TFL to ask the engineers why they did this. Other vehicles with IRS and air suspension have cleaner designs (i.e Wagoneer, Range Rover)

    • @grizzly3138
      @grizzly3138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is the only reason I don’t own one of these and it is frustrating. I love the look and the overall design, but the way-too-low rear suspension is a glaring design issue (Ford, Jeep, Nissan, etc can all manage to do better than GM with theirs) which will cause problems on even a moderately rutted road and more serious problems (damage) in rocky situations. I haven’t seen any TH-cam channel address this issue. Those arms create lower ground clearance near the tires than regular cars and minivans. You can see what looks like A-arm contact at 14:29 or so in the video.

    • @timlong1462
      @timlong1462 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@wp31144 yeah, it’s funny when you pull up behind one of these next to an Armada. Couldn’t be a bigger difference in ground clearance. Seems like a huge oversight on the designers. I think they just expect so few, like less than 1% of people who buy this to actually take it off road. Most of the time they are used just like a minivan. Clearly they went for a ride quality over capability.

    That 2wd start was impressive. To be honest, I'm surprised such a big, stock SUV did so well, especially with such low profile tires. $80 grand just seems excessive for a GM.

    I love the look of the Yukon and Tahoe for the most part. I especially love the removal of AFM. But.. I cant get around how huge it is. Its so wide and kind of round when you look at it from the back. I also wish GM would make a comeback with a 2 door model Tahoe with full flip front passenger seat, bench seat in the back, lifted 4inches from factory with Fox or King shocks, and a Diesel engine. Wishing wishing wishing.

    I had a 2015 GMC Yukon. Loved the vehicle but hated the 5.3 engine trying to tow a trailer through West Virginia and Virginia mountains. Got rid of it shortly after. Would probably still have it if it had the 6.2. Was used to a Suburban with the 7.4.

    The rear diff is pretty impressive. It transferred power much faster than the old G80 would. Out of curiosity, it looks like at the end when going down the steps the air suspension was lower than it was earlier, did its height get reset on accident?

    @ 6:45 did anyone notice the traction control system braking the right front wheel that was in the air? Unfortunately GM doesn't advertise it much, nor does TFL or most TH-cam truck reviews channel talk about it. But, gm does use brake torque vectoring. This is the same Tech RAM advertises in the front differential of the TRX, also similar to what Toyota does their trucks. It's why Toyota doesn't feel the need to have a front locker.
    So while brake torque vectoring isn't as good as a locker. These GM trucks do have some traction aid in the front differential.

    I'd like some more aggressive tires if i was shelling out all of those extra dollars for the off road package. It would definitely lessen wheel spin. I think that this is an area manufacturers are skimping on many times. When you got an off road package 20 years ago, you always got appropriate tires.
