    Based on my experience with our '21 Silverado, I would say the quality of the end product is not worth the asking price. It's a shame because they did a lot of good things in the redesign on the T1-based vehicles, but it seems they are engineered to last the length of the warranty and no longer. Also, if you get the L84 5.3 or L87 6.2 V8, I strongly recommend disabling DFM by driving in "L9" (on the 10-speed) or "L7" (on the 8-speed). Disabling the system makes the drivability way better and greatly reduces the likelihood of lifter failure. I've only noted a 1 MPG loss in fuel economy with the 5.3 since these have a mild 3.23 final drive. That would make for a good TFL MPG loop video: driving in "D" vs. "L9" on this Yukon AT4 6.2.

      @jonesjones7057 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly. I can't believe this issue isn't brought up in every review. Seems odd to me but maybe that's just me. Reviewers talk trash about CVTs in any car they drive that has one but somehow DFM is off limits. Makes me wonder..

    • @voided3
      @voided3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jonesjones7057 It's definitely an issue, and it isn't unique to GM as other auto makers also build engines with cylinder deactivation. I would think a change in the ECU tune would be enough to regain the 1 MPG DFM adds without the added mechanical complexity of the system. If the lifters in our truck had failed out of warranty, it would easily have been a $5,000+ repair, too.

      I haven’t owned a Chevy for a while now. I have considered their pickups lately, just due to the price!! The 2021s were priced very well, but several of my friends have a 19 or newer. 6 out of 8 have had no issues at all and 2 drive the crap out of their trucks. 2, though, have had nightmarish experience with theirs. Both are 5.3. One 2019 RST, the other has a 2020 Trail Boss. They have both been stranded more than once resulting in several trips to the dealership, some behind/on top of a tow truck. They have payments and can’t wait to get their trucks paid off to get rid of them. I have tried to convince them to get out now and get what they can. They are not in the position to pay more, so they are kinda stuck. I think I have a solution for each of them, it will cost me some $$, but they are good friends. It will be a Christmas gift for them. My buddy has 2 F150s similarly optioned with the 2.7 and Pro Power onboard. Both SuperCrew XLT 4x4s. I will pay the difference to get them to basically the same position they are in now, but with new trucks. There are a lot of us with 2017 or newer F150s, most are Hybrids, and we have been problem free other than a few recalls. Routine maintenance is very inexpensive. They find out about this on Saturday when I take them out for a steak dinner I owe each of them. (Football bet) I will be driving one of the F150s when I pick them up. My buddy owns the dealership and through myself & my businesses, (I have bought over 100 F150s from his dealership since 1998), so I get a bit of leeway. I think they will jump for the deal, but be very shy in doing so. I hope they do.
      I just love the Trail Boss,,,,,,, I’m tempted to roll the dice on it for an off-road toy, but I already have a Bronco Badlands.
      I just love these AT4 Yukon’s, but a 6.2 is over $95,000 Canadian!! They can reach $100K!!!
      I agree, they are asking too much, especially if you are looking at keeping it past warranty.

    • @voided3
      @voided3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@shitloveaduck Yeah, our '21 Silverado is perfect on paper and was priced well, but it's had a ton of issues (lifter failure at 585 miles, bed misalignment, a rear vent that didn't work, incorrectly installed trim pieces, needed a new serpentine belt and idler pulley at 6300 miles, a litany of squeaks/rattles/clunks, etc.). I'm looking at an F150 with the 2.7 as a possible replacement down the road.

      Yeah GM quality is garbage. Resale also reflects that. DFM/AFM is a really bad idea and always will be. As far as the 8 speed goes is a defective piece of crap that GM keeps doubling down on. They should just admit it will never be reliable enough and quit making it. I would go with Dodge with their zf 8 speed or with Ford. If you want something that hold up get a tundra. GM is in last place IMO.

      I think the Volt's hybrid system would be good for this, a lot more space, use a smaller battery for maybe 10 miles of all electric range, use the electric motors to do most the work with the diesel mainly acting as a generator, the 3.0 diesel actually weighs less than the 6.2, that doesn't include the emissions system, but that's really just an extra tank and heavier cats (DPF). It won't increase the hwy mpg, but it should increase the city to almost what the hwy mpg is now.

      @billluster7687 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you turn off DFM with a tune, it will void the warranty. Instead I bought the Pulsar LT in-line tuner, which plugs directly into the main wiring harness in the engine bay. Simply take it off for dealership trips. Takes about 2 minutes to install and uninstall. The vehicles computer system is never modified so the warranty stays intact. I have this on my 6.2L 2021 Sierra AT4 and it works great!

    • @HiPlains1

      @@billluster7687 That's what I meant. The one I've heard people use is the trifecta tune which can also re-calibrate shift points, turn off afm etc.. and like you say revert back to oem settings. This is especially useful for those suckers that have the 8 speed. It helps, but there is only so much one can do for that crapola turkey trans. I personally would stay away from the brand. I have 10K miles on it and the other day, the engine light came on. Went to the dealer and the code was for the "Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor". There were no other symptoms, the truck ran fine, idled fine, no odd noises. I am scheduled to take it in on Monday (its Friday) to have it checked. I have driven it to Florida, Virginia, and South Carolina. Runs great and gets a lot of attention. I certainly hope that this is a minor issue. I would agree with Ed Ricco the DFM is a detriment. I presently own a 2021 AT4 with the 5.3 and it lost a lifter. I feel its better to have all cylinders firing instead of letting them randomly shut off and on. Personally I would also prefer a 3.31 rear end ratio. The 3.23 is too high causing the unit to downshift and upshift going up hill. I am trading for a 2022 with a 6.2 motor. I would also like GM to get rid of the chrome inside of the cabin. The sun reflects off it going down the road.

    Premium unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM
    specification D4814 with a posted octane
    rating of 93 - (R+M)/2 - is highly
    recommended for best performance and fuel
    economy. Unleaded gasoline with an octane
    rated as low as 87 can be used.

    Every time I see one of the new GM full sized SUV’s on the road, I can’t help but think that the body, especially as viewed from the front, seems higher / taller than it needs to be - you also see it on the front quarter panels, which just looks off to me. Even my wife commented on how odd it looks, as the front looks like a brick.

    Considering the 23' Sequoia TRD Pro has much worse approach angle, worse departure angle, less clearance, and 30% less cargo room now, for basically the same price I'd buy the Yukon AT4 over a Sequoia in a heartbeat. I do wish they'd make it with the 3.0L diesel though.

    I really like what GM has done with their SUVs. I have been driving GM trucks since 1988 and had great luck with them.
    Unfortunately GMs quality and reputation have been tanking for years with no end in sight. I would certainly hesitate to purchase another truck from them.
    I hope my 2010 lasts another 250k.

    GM builds the best looking, highest featured large SUV with the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade, but they remain so unreliably made that you end up in the shop far more often than you should from my experience. Never own one again.

    With 1400 lb payload, carrying (6) 200lb passengers will only leave you with 200lbs for cargo. Put a cargo box on top filled and your near the limit which doesn’t give you any room for a trailer. Even without cargo, there is no remaining capacity for a trailer. Something to think about if you imagine packing the inside with all your friends or family and expect to pull something.

    • @jamesbeaman6337
      @jamesbeaman6337 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty much what you get with any well equipped full size SUV out there. Would have to go with a base trim in 2wd to add another 300lbs payload.

    It doesn’t matter what features you add on a GM, until they fundamentally change them from a government supported union shop to a free market company that depends on the market to survive, buying one will be a crapshoot. Might as well buy a Range Rover.

    I skipped the AT4 and went with the Yukon Denali XL for the family hauler. I like the interior stitching and the overall look but I don’t think we would benefit from any of the off-road tech on such a big vehicle. I have other trucks/Jeeps than we can take off-road.
