    I have a 2001 RX300 on my hoist at the moment being repaired for a head gasket leak. When I pulled the cams I hadn't noticed the two sets of timing marks on the VVT gears. Your video clarified the double and single marks on the gears for me. Very appreciative of the information you put out there. Couldn't find it on ALLDATA or IDENTIFIX and the local Toyota dealership wouldn't help. Thanks, Don

    Thanks for your video. I am a tech working on a 00 RX300 w/ a 1MZ-FE 3.0L. I have no codes but car came in running a little knarly. I performed VVT CTRL B1 & B2 ACTIVE TEST. After finishing Bank 2 test, the engine stalled and would not restart. After chking fuel and spark, a compression test revealed low compression on all front cylinders 2,4,6. None of the cyl's tested higher than 50 psi. After squirting some engine oil in each of these cyl's, the engine started after which I drove the vehicle down the road. It felt a little low on power and had a diesel like noise to it. Repeating compression tests again produced around 110 psi this time. This engine was just overhauled w/ new rings and bearings, however the VVT actuators are original. Prior to her latest symptoms the vehicle performed well , it has 200,000 miles on the odom. Only one VVT solenoid was replaced 2 yrs ago, thanks.

    I gave the customer a few options like trying the oil control valve only first. But they chose to do everything at once and sure enough it got fixed the first time. A little sludge build up can cause the valve and or the gear to stick and the symptoms will be the same.

    that 14mm braket bolt gave me problem when I did the valve cover on my camry....taking it out was easy but I was not able to put back the original...I had to make the hole on the bracket a little bigger....used a longer 14mm bolt so I could tighten it with a regular wrench but I had to use a spacer cut from 1/2 inch pipe

    My RX300 has 110k miles and the valves cover gaskets are leaking. While having them replaced, do you recommend to replace the intake gaskets, the knock sensors, the knock sensor harness and the water inlet hose and maybe the spark plugs as well? Since removing the plenum is such as big job, do you think that it make sense to have these few parts replaced as well? What's the labor cost if I want them done in one time?

  • @Dailydriven79
    @Dailydriven79  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those are under the lower intake manifold. At about 2:10 in the video, proceed to remove the fuel line, water outlet and the 12mm bolts for the intake, then pull the intake with the fuel rail and there they are. They're 27mm or 30mm; I like to replace that short wire harness with both of them while I'm in there.

    VVT is a hard system to diagnose. Active testing the system while idling should cause it to run rough, if not, somethings stuck or blocked. If it works but continues to run rough when switched off, somethings stuck. Both conditions will throw codes/ check engine light. On some motors the oil control valves can be swapped and the system rechecked. After that you can check valve timing and the condition, pressure and level of the oil. This one was sticking,

    Front cover is leaking on my 2001 Avalon which I think is the same engine. I am going to attempt to replace it myself, but I said the same thing about my 2004 Sequoia and ended up getting my mechanic to replace them and those look easy compared to this. Wrist issues take a toll, so I cannot do much on my own.

    I have a 2000 Avalon (190,000 miles) with the 1mz-fe V6 and it's misfiring and throwing a vvt check engine light code(I think 1394). I had this same exact problem and I had the VvT oil control valve replaced which fixed the problem until now which is a year later. What do you think code be the problem? The electric signal to the oil control valve? Or is something prematurely making it dirty since it's not too old?

    "Under certain conditions customers may experience a MIL “ON” condition with DTC
    P1349, indicating a variable valve timing (VVTi) malfunction. In some cases, the cause of
    this DTC may be the VVTi actuator. Use the procedures in this bulletin to verify the
    operation of the actuator." This is a copy/ paste right off T-SB EG007-03. The VVT gear is replaceable, the nut that holds it is non reuseable. I don't think it would cause a high idle though.

    • @sooocheesy
      @sooocheesy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg Garner it probably wasn't bad, they just ripped that customer off and told them that was bad when the oil control valve was actually just stuck. I had the OCV go 'bad' on my RX300 and just took it out, cleaned it and haven't had an issue in 3 years since.

    At the 130,000 mile check, a dealer told me my '02 valve cover gasket is leaking and wants $800 to replace it. What is a reasonable price to pay for this job?

    • @TheTexican05
      @TheTexican05 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Average labor rate at dealers is $105-125/hr, and parts are whatever the parts counter lists them for at Toyota. If you watch this video and see how much is involved to access the rear valve cover, you'll see that $800 is a steal. :-)
      Your dealer is likely charging only 6-6.5hrs labor plus parts. That is a fair price. Private mechanic will be cheaper, but you'll want to shop around and find someone with specific experience with Toyota and Honda who takes their time and is thorough. Hope this helps. -Michael @ Goat Automotive (Austin, TX)

    The valve cover gaskets on that particular engines starts leaking oil about every 9 years. You'll lose a half quart every 3 week. You can just top it off if you don't want to pay the expense valve cover gasket replacement cost.

    • @Hizenbird
      @Hizenbird 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting.... My 2000 RX doesn't leak oil at all. It currently has 290K miles. I'm sure it all depends on how well you take care of the car. I did have to have the transmission replace about 150K miles ago, remember the faulty transmission problems these cars were having? Lexus paid for the tranny while I paid for the labor.

      2GR-FE more advanced.

    • @hobolyf
      @hobolyf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are great engines. 1mz-fe needs a timing belt which can be costly. 2ge-fe can have some knocks, catastrophic oil leaks etc. 1mz fe is my favorite if you maintain it well it will run forever (specially the non vvt). Even with 250k it will run smoothly.

  • @bienbalajadia8345

    LoL... I think he forgot to tighten the screw for the Bank 2 oil control valve with a wrench. i really don't think that should be a "hand tight" screw, as he used a socket wrench to remove it. the O-ring will keep the oil from leaking, but for how long is anyone's guess. when that screw eventually pops out, expect an oil drenched engine.
