  • In this video we're prepping our campervan to paint with Rustoleum CombiColor using a roller.
We knew when we bought the van that what with the state of the paintjob we would be painting it on the cheap with a roller.
Flakey paint? Dents? Rust? No problem!
In our eagerness to buy a van and start our very own DIY budget campervan conversion we missed a few issues with the bodywork of Helsing so in preparation to paint we had to try and address some of these issues; with mixed results!
So WHO are WE? We’re Scarlett, Craig and Merlin and along with Helsing, form the PILGRIM PODS!
If you enjoy this video why not check out some of our other content? Delve even deeper into our channel; we thought we’d create a series of vlogs chronicling the conversion of our old panel van HELSING (did you see what we did there?) into a weekend warrioring campervan for ADVENTURING and EXPLORING in the UK.
Each vlog will cover a stage or smaller element of our campervan build, showing our ideas put into action and highlighting our SUCCESSES and FAILURES along the way. With no previous experience this may make for an interesting journey! Our plan is to convert a cheap van on a small budget without cutting corners and at the end, have a campervan to be proud of. We’re hoping you’d like to join us for this journey and that you find our uploads ENTERTAINING and even, INFORMATIVE!
So, in this vlog we're prepping our campervan ready to paint it cheaply with a roller using Rustoleum CombiColor gloss paint. At times we felt like we were chasing our own tails but finally we think we're ready to hit the next stage; an exciting stage, painting!

Blimey it's only now I see why Helsing was so cheap. Never seen paint peel like that before. Doesn't look that bad on the sides but the roof is mad. Still a bargain though. I cannot find a mechanally sound van for anything near what you paid.

I wish we paid more for something a bit straighter and with better paintwork! I've wasted a lot of hours trying to get on top of that paint trying to feather it in... Keep going with the search, eventually you'll find the right van for yourself. Keep us informed when you find one! 😊👍💙❤

@@PilgrimPods Everything I'm looking at for under £3,000 needs a ton of work and they're all covered in dents. Half of them pretty much need new engines and anything mechanical is way beyond me so I'm a bit deflated at the moment. If I find anything that looks rough but runs well I'll jump at it. I mean the way I drive I'll probably add to the dents anyway. As for the paint on your van I'd be tempted to use chemical paint stripper to try and get rid of as much as possible, sanding that looks like too much work.

@@tine8849 if you have Facebook, check out the marketplace. It's the best site at the minute for person to person selling. Some real decent vans on there! Check everyday and be sure in what you want so you can jump on whatever comes available! Good luck dude :)

@@PilgrimPods At least you've given yourself the knowledge and skills to be able to tackle anything like this in the future! It's looking really good so far man, good luck with the painting.
I'm only going to paint the bottom half of ours, as well using a roller, but I think I'll just go for black and mask off a solid line, instead of trying to feather it in :)

That's a great call! I still find myself looking on there even now... I would quite like an XLWB... We picked our van up from Gumtree in the end. 😊👍

We feel like we've done a lot of faffing about just to actually get to a stage to start the conversion... Hopefully once we have a couple of coats on progress should start ramping up! Don't want to tempt fate but we've started the rollering and so far it looks pretty good. 😊🤞

Cheers guys. It was a bit of a pig to look at when we first bought it but we're slowly getting there with it. First coat other than a bit of finishing up is down and looks surprisingly good! Second coat will hopefully be down Sunday and next week I'll get the windows in finally! 😁🙌💙❤

Hi Craig well my van is done and it was more tiring then i thought it would be first coat for me was awful and the paint just was not covering at all, anyhow looked terrible sanded back did a second coat and thankfully its not too bad parts of the vehicle do look worse then others but its ok my thoughts now are to leave it for afew weeks and maybe sand back and buff and polish or . Put a third coat of paint if i go for the third option will probably do it a section at s time now ...thank you for posting your project and for your advice regards john

Hey John, I'm definitely in favour of painting in stages as when I get tired I start to rush and that's when I make a mess of things! 😆 I've only put two coats down and ours was a little patchy on the first pass but the second seemed to rectify that. Regarding patchiness, I think it helped that we were painting a lighter blue over blue but of course I don't know for sure. Later this year, time permitting we'll be getting at least a third coat down focussing on large panel areas and not so much the nooks and crannies. Once done we'll flat it and give a good final polish and see what we end up with. It seems to me thin coats of paint and patience with the process is definitely the way to achieving a great finish. I don't regret for one moment painting mine with a roller and I hope you don't either. All the best finishing yours off too mate. If you have the time, let me know how you get on with it either here or somewhere on social media, I'd love to see how it turns out. 🙂👍

No idea, haven't looked into it yet. The bottom right hand corner of my door doesn't always shut properly so when closing it I have to apply pressure by hand sometimes.

Going to be attempting this on a 1994 Toyota. Can I ask what grit you used on your orbital sander when you did the initial sand? Many thanks!

    • @PilgrimPods
      @PilgrimPods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey Lewis, I used a number of really coarse grits to try and lift the horrible peeling paint from our van. Most folk won't have the same issue as I had with ours; the paint on these is well known to be really poor and just pulls away from the primer. I worked my way up to 400 grit to provide a nice key for the paint and almost 12 months later it's been fine with no issues whatsoever. Only issue I've had is where I've taped an area up for another job and the old paint beneath has lifted from the primer on removal of the tape taking the new paint with it but as I say that won't affect 99% of others. Ideally I would have removed all of the old paint to avoid that issue but for a £1500 van it just wasn't worth my time or effort. Painting our van with a roller was definitely the right decision for us and even with only two coats (I want four eventually) and no flat and polish it looks really good. Hope that answers your question and best of luck with that Toyota mate! 🙂👍
