  • In this video we're SOUND DEADENING our campervan. Wanting to know if it would make a difference we decided to conduct a little test. The results were quite surprising!
    We bought some positively reviewed and highly rated sound deadening material to install in our campervan. We'd seen many sound deadening tutorials but what many of those were lacking were a before and after example of the difference doing so makes. We decided to to run a little experiment ourselves to see if sound deadening a CAMPERVAN or MOTORHOME was worthwhile. So, should you sound deaden your campervan?
    Below are the product links* if you're interested in checking out more closely what we've opted to use for sound deadening and its installation.

    So WHO are WE? We’re Scarlett, Craig and Merlin and along with Helsing, form the PILGRIM PODS!
    If you enjoy this video why not check out some of our other content? Delve even deeper into our channel; we thought we’d create a series of vlogs chronicling the conversion of our old panel van HELSING (did you see what we did there?) into a weekend warrioring campervan for ADVENTURING and EXPLORING in the UK.
    Each vlog will cover a stage or smaller element of our campervan build, showing our ideas put into action and highlighting our SUCCESSES and FAILURES along the way. With no previous experience this may make for an interesting journey! Our plan is to convert a cheap van on a small budget without cutting corners and at the end, have a campervan to be proud of. We’re hoping you’d like to join us for this journey and that you find our uploads ENTERTAINING and even, INFORMATIVE!
    Is sound deadening YOUR campervan or motorhome a worthwhile investment of time and money? Hopefully this video will give you the answers you require and help guide you in your own decision of whether or not to sound proof your own little tine home on wheels.

    I'm well late to this as I've just found your channel, but regarding the before and after db readings, remember that the decibels scale is not a straight line scale - the readings are relative. So, to quote from the internet "On the decibel scale, the quietest audible sound (perceived near total silence) is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than near total silence is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB, 40 dB and so on."
    So the difference between 70db and 60db is not 15% quieter, it's A LOT quieter! In fact it's half as loud!

    Thanks for your input with this. I’m just starting my own conversion and read so much stuff about so many different materials, I wasn’t sure which way to go. Now I do so thanks.

    For our camper, sound deadening did make a difference but insulation and absorbent furniture also all help, so its a multi-layered sandwich of absorption!

      Glad you like it man. We weren't going to bother with a video solely on sound deadening as it's such a boring topic. 😄 The more we thought about it though, the more we wanted to know if it was worth the time and money. We then thought a video highlighting before and after might be interesting and actually be of help to others. 😊👍

    I bought a little bit of Dodo Mat from ebay and plan on using it sparingly just for the obvious parts on the ceiling and walls. I did find that the previous owner had used a load of Duralay Laminate Flooring Underlay as sound deadening and it seems to do an OK job & it's free so I'm keeping that.

    • @PilgrimPods
      @PilgrimPods  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We learnt a little goes a long way. Probably just as well as it weighs so much. If we had to apply more than 30-50% to achieve decent sound reduction we'd probably just leave it out as the tradeoff of all that additional weight wouldn't be worth it in our view. We're expecting huge improvements again once we've insulated.

      It does! I think the mic picks up a lot of the road noise as the differences before and after didn't seem that great using that as a gauge... To my ear though, everything sounds more solid. There's less 'ringing' coming from the van. 🙂👍

      @@BruceLauderdale that's reassuring to hear. I think there's additional rattles coming from our doors as well. I'll run the first fix wiring today or tomorrow and insulate the following day and hopefully like you, that'll make a difference too. 😊👍

      Pilgrim Pods - I’m sure it would. The difference just the deadening makes has an weirdness about it. It does something which is far more pleasing but actually explaining the difference is so difficult to put into words. Overall, I would definitely do it again.

      It was a bit of an afterthought on the ceiling. We were focused on getting decent coverage in the walls and doors and had quite a bit left over so applied it to the ceiling too. It went further than we thought! 😄 Are you planning on giving your van a makeover any time soon? 😊

      The question is what (how big or small) would be the difference if you did put sound deadening material on the ceiling.
      An illustrative test would've been useful. Wonder if I can find something this specific on TH-cam. Probably not.

    I was intrigued about the idea of butyl tape being cheaper than automotive sound deadening (too late for me I'm afraid - I've already sound deadened the van). However, looking it up on the internet, a roll of tape of 10m x 5cm x 1.5mm (which works out at 0.5 square metres) is about £10 - that's aprox £20/square metre. The Dodo Dead Mat Hex 5.83m x 0.6m roll I bought works out at £14.32 / square metre. So now I'm wondering - is the butyl tape really cheaper - or maybe there is some other type of butyl sheet material available?

    • @PilgrimPods
      @PilgrimPods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I can glean butyl tape is cheaper but not purchased online as the weight of the stuff appears to factor into the price when it comes to delivery. I've found good savings to be had at local DIY stores; just means I have to get off my backside and go collect it. If memory serves, it's pretty cheap at Toolstation. I'll look more closely when I get around to sorting the doors of the cab. 😊

    • @sebxj25vm
      @sebxj25vm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The prices above are from ToolStation. I think it only looks cheaper until you work out the square metres covered. Do let us know if you manage to find it somewhere else cheaper please.

      I would recommend using lead flash band instead or tape. It's about the same price as dodo matt but stops a hell of a load more noise.

    Why only sound proof in 50%? Will 80% or 90% would be better in long term and blocking more outside noise?

    • @PilgrimPods
      @PilgrimPods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference between 50% soundproofing and none is huge but whilst using more will make a difference, the gains just aren't as big. Also there's the additional cost and weight to consider. It's a really dense and heavy material. Insulating the van is also going to make a big difference too. I guess it all boils down to personal preference like most things. 🙂

      I think every material serves a particular function. Butyl tape seems like it's extremely sticky and way too strong?
      Maybe the best bet is just to buy the cheapest sound deadening material. Instead of popular brands. And maybe it's that's the best way to economize on this?

    Yes, the test isn't that accurate I think. Basically at the beginning you did mention that the argument against additional sound deadening is that once one puts the insulation and EVERYTHING else - by that point sound deadening is not necessary. But then you did test on a completely empty van, so...
