- This video is out of date, we've assembled a new and improved Starter Solenoid Kit with it's own video which you can find in the link below.
• Revival Cycles Tech Ta...
In this edition of Revival Cycles' Tech Talk we go over build features, mountability, and some electrical theory for the Universal Starter Relay Solenoid. Watch as Stefan shows off his drawing skills while getting moto-nerdy to the max.
I didn't really understand solenoids. Until I watched this, now I do. It was all great, not too much for me! Keep up the great teaching!!
Thanks! I wanted to let you know that this video is still helping people.
Thank you Stefan. Clear, concise and informative. Your delivery is easy to watch and listen to. Hope to see you at the next
"Hand Built".
Glad it was helpful!
Can I just come to Texas and learn everything Stefan has to teach!
Henry Mounser : He's an egineer so it might take a while.
You just solved all of my troubleshooting problems by explaning all that. very informative thanks
Thank you guys for explanation :) very simple, very informative, just everything we need in order to understand what's going on ;) please keep making these videos for us we ain't so experienced as you are... Thanks, you are great! ;)
I highly suggest paying a premium for this unit at Revival. I spend half an hour making mounting brackets. I also spent an hour researching and buying a harness to plug into the top. Gold terminals look good. Great tech articles by this team.
Great video, thanks for putting these clips out.
Many thanks for your explanation and teatching. You're a credit to us, bikers. Best regards from Portugal.
Amazing teaching, I understand much more clearly now
"if you dont like theory....you can watch something else" hahahah...i love it!
great explanation! thanks man-
I see in the video that the one you're showing has 4 connections and a fuse where as mine for my 2014 Honda XR650L has only 2 connections and the fuse but the fuse does is not live. May I ask if you have a relay for my year, make and model bike please.
spot on good vid cheers m8ty
Just for an 84 Magna V50, rust has stopped everything from tank to pump to carbs. Ran it for a minute before it finally quit. I could start it with gravity feed to carbs, but then poof, starter won’t fly, batter seems dead too. Corroded cable to solenoid but I’m dumb and didn’t pay attention. Think the replacement was backwards and just janky, so put it together as I thought it went. Blew fuse. Not sure what to think about it.
you guys are great
So I have a question I have an 81 cb750 dohc for some reason I can't get charge to my battery is have installed a cycle x alternator setup and a brand new loom on the bike the only thing inline from the alternator to the battery that I haven't changed is my starter solenoid could this restrict charge if faulty?
Is it one of our solenoids? If it is or it's one like it check that the fuse isn't blown. The circuit is so simple in construction that there isn't anything to fail but if it's wired incorrectly or the fuse is blown it will not charge the battery.
@@RevivalCycles thanks mate It's not one of yours but the same style it just seems stuck at 12.3V I'm away at work at the moment but when I get home I'm just trying to do my homework I've put heaps of money into it to try eliminate the common major issues these old bikes have can the ignition switch be a possibility too? They are literally the only 2 not brand new things on the bike
You say simple but when I ask or when I call for help with order I received I don't get anything but the same instructions that came in the box from an email he sent me. Like I said before I'm just a beginner and help is needed where my starter relay switch has only 2 pins where as yours has 4 pins. On my bike it shows that one of the wires G/R goes to clutch diode and clutch switch the wire Y/R goes to the starter kill switch. So where would these 2 wires connect to on your stater relay where yours has 4 pins?
Have you tried reaching out to our tech support team directly? Please reach out to techsupport@revivalcycles.com and we can help you with most if not all questions. Thanks!
@@RevivalCycles I wasted my money and time when I purchased the starter relay from you, simple for someone with the knowledge and tools but I figured I get the help that you advertised little did I know I was wrong.
is it correct to have battery ground wire to one side of the solenoid and my positive hot wire to the other? I also have other wires connected to both sides. I have the ignition stitch one leg connected to the hot side as well. I took some wires apart and back together but now won't start and the solenoid clicks. I can feel it thumb but the starter motor doesnt crank. I need help determining why its not starting or rewire the whole damn thing
Hey Ryan, if I am reading that correctly it doesn't sound right. There's an updated wire diagram in the link below that should help and if you have any more questions hit me up at techsupport@revivalcycles.com. TH-cam comments just isn't the best format for helping.
Exactly which wire/circuit does the fuse protect? Is it possible for back emf to flow back up the signal wire? Example: during solenoid malfunction when contact get stuck. Thanks
This fused circuit could be used a number of ways but it's intended purpose is to sit between the reg/rec and the battery, in order to protect the battery from an over voltage scenario should the reg/rec fail. Same as the main fuse on an OEM harness.
Is there a way to get replacement for those rubber things (like that one the solenoid sits in) ? I ve noticed a lot of 'em on my bike are pretty deteriorated and are falling apart .. x)
Not that we are aware of. Also, the rubber things all look the same, but often they are slightly different sizes, especially if you are looking at standard relays and not solenoids. One place to look might be on an OEM parts supplier website like bike bandit. That way you can be sure to find the right one that fits.
I didnt realize pressing the starter button was grounding 12v from those two contacts
I just received this item with the intention of using it on my 1973 Honda cb350f. I bought it because I thought it was great to have the fuse incorporated with the solenoid. Also, I was told I should replace the old glass tube with a blade fuse(mine kept blowing). The main fuse off the battery is 15A, according to the wiring diagram. On the back of the package of the solenoid, it says it is to be used with a 30A system. Would I be able to still use this 30A fuse with the current gauge wiring harness on my motorcycle? Or should I stick with the 15A fuse? Should I return this product? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There is no problem using a 15 amp fuse with the solenoid. It is literally just a fuse holder, that taps power off the battery connection on the solenoid. There is no need to use the 30 that comes with it, and the stock wiring on the CB is not designed for that much amperage.
love these videos. quick question though - is the fuse even needed still with the motogadget m.unit blue? I noticed in the instructions you can do an install without the fuse and would just would like to know if it's even needed.
None of the m-Unit's need a main fuse. BUT the charging system needs a fuse to protect the battery from a reg/rec failure, and since you need a main fuse, it just makes sense to run the m-Unit through that as well. This package of solenoid/main fuse is the most convenient way to do this.
Although you can connect the m-Unit directly to the battery. My opinion is that this is bad practice, so ALL revival builds have a main fuse that powers the m-Unit.
what is the use of four connector as in theory you've shown only two and I also think only 2 are required so, why 4 and how do we come to know which one goes to which point?
and thank you for this video...
You might want to re-watch from this point. th-cam.com/video/QwBX8WvcYNU/w-d-xo.htmlm40s
Revival Cycles thank you for prompt response but what is "m" unit ?
th-cam.com/video/dmexjVEZ2q8/w-d-xo.html
Real Good explanation. I just wonder if that is as strong as the Ford Solenoid. Yours is a lot smaller and would be a little cleaner.
Hi Ron,
We've updated to a new updated kit that we assemble here in house that includes an updated solenoid with fused circuit that high with a high quality waterproof connector, I'll post the link to it's video at the end of my comment.
In both cases these are 30 Amp solenoids intended for motorcycles with independent starter solenoids. This is perfect for most Japanese, British and Italian bikes. This will not work with Harley's, BMW's or Moto Guzzi's where the solenoid is incorporated into the starter motor. I don't know anything about the Ford Solenoid you mention but I wouldn't expect this to go toe to toe with a larger higher amperage coil and win.
Since the introduction of this kit we've not seen a single return for any reason other than it being incompatible with their application.

@@RevivalCycles Thank you for the reply. I will keep this in mind.
If I am planning on using motogadget M-Relay+ do I still need a solenoid??
The m-Relay+ is used to control turn signals as an integrated flasher and push button control module. The starter solenoid on the other hand is used to control the electric starter motor. These two systems operate completely independent, and if you have an electric starter you will need a starter solenoid of some type. BMW, Moto Guzzi, and Harley typically have the solenoid built into the starter, virtually all other bikes use a separate solenoid like the one in this video.
Thanks!!
Guys, can I ask for a video on a 95 HD 883 Sportster ignition system working with the Motogadget kit
I wish we had the time and budget to do model specific videos, unfortunately there are just not enough hours in the day, and typically we are making these videos on nights and weekends. But I think the next video is scheduled to be how to trace and determine the connections for any ignition system.
does the motogadget m unit blue work with the m button
Yes it does. However, we recommend only using the m-Button if you really need it (like on an ultra custom, super clean build). The install process can be somewhat challenging to get the m-Button into the bars, and also, the m-Button has been shown to be susceptible to EMI and RFI interference from the ignition system. It is much more robust to wire the controls directly to the m-Unit inputs, and if using the m-Switch mini's it also the absolute easiest install. In many cases the m-Button doesn't really clean up the look of the bike, makes the install tougher, and opens up a risk that the m-Button has a problem and the whole system stops working.
great Video, i´m about to finish a CB 500 Four from 75, can i use this Solenoid.
Thanks and greatings from Germany.
P.S. you explain the Motogadget stuff better MG themselve
Yes, this solenoid is a great replacement for the CB500. This type of solenoid can be used on any bike with a separate starter and solenoid (most bikes). The only ones it doesn't work with are the type with bendix style starters where the solenoid is integrated into the starter (Harley, BMW R-bikes, Moto Guzzi are the main ones).
Revival Cycles I have a Honda magna750 1983 and would like to know if can work on , I put battery brand new and still does starting, sound like mute.-
Do you ship to Sweden?
Sure, we ship to virtually every country. The check out page on the webstore should give accurate shipping information.
Who makes this relay?
You can buy one here....revivalcycles.com/collections/electrical/products/universal-starter-relay-solenoid
these videos are just motogadget advertising.... That works!! I'm saving up for a M-unit and now a starter solenoid. anything else "I need"?
a motorcycle :)
Tostibrand dammit! knew I forgot something! where can I find one of those?
Its really difficult to beat the motogadget gear, but trust me, if we ever find something that works better we will not hesitate to share it with the world.
As far as what else you'll need, that all depends on what you've got, and what you plan to do. Here is a link to a check list we use to make sure we have a plan for the electrical stuff. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0072/8562/files/ElectricalSystemChecklist_1.pdf?14692071879394739526
Ah, I know what that click noise is now; also where to buy these things, nightmare.
Sonofabitch! I ordered that same solenoid (not from y'all) and didn't get any of that stuff with it.
M unit is...what?
It's so very many things but its core functionality is as a solid state fuse block and relay replacement. In addition to that it has an alarm, keyless power up. voltage monitoring and a tone of other features. There is really nothing else like it on the market. shop.revivalcycles.com/motogadget-m-unit-blue/
@@RevivalCycles I see I see. Thanks!
We have a China moped and we got no power past the starter solenoid no clicks nothing. Ofcourse it turns over if we jump the starter solenoid but if it's a bad solenoid than would that kill power to the hole bike. I was thinking since the power hits the solenoid and has to hit a switch inside and it's not than that's why we don't have power. But it's a 3 wire like in this video. So maybe a knock off Honda clone.
It's just a relay.
Stunk you didn't even say what each of the 4 terminal's due how you ground it witch one is hot witch one is coming from the ignition sucked
