I am impressed that you really watched it all. I gave up after some 15min in the first part as it was utterly dull. Not being funny is a risk that comes with comedy, as not everyone might find the same thing amusing, but being bloody boring is simply a crime.
The US Office had writers that were, frankly, complete geniuses and actors that could take it knock it out of the park. They managed to secure super unique, super talented people and it ended up being lightning in bottle. You can't force something like that, those things end up happening by chance
I think they nailed it: Australians love bland ... Jackie O, Chrissie Swan, Asher Keddie, Natalie Bassingthwaite, Friends, our crime shows & dramas with dialogue even the scriptwriters wouldn't spout in real life & acting on a par with Home & Away, which is a feat in itself.
I hope this is like Parks and Rec, a pretty bad unrelatable 1st season with a 2nd season that tries something new and gives depth to all of the vapid characters that give the show legs to actually go somewhere. But nowadays if something isn't an immediate slam dunk then its gonna get canned so I doubt it gets a 2nd chance
This is honestly a lesson studios need to learn. If you're going to knowingly name a show after a piece of intellectual property, we're going to compare! They call it that because they know we're going to watch because of The Office recognition of being "a good comedy". Enough of this war. "We're remaking it, but think about it as a remake. We just hope you keep the success of the original in your head when associating with our creation." We're not numb to the core, it's okay to say something was bad jeez lol.
What annoys me is this show has been given a real push marketing wise, when there are way better Australian show which don't seem to get as much attention like The Newsreader, Deadloch, Mr Inbetween, Utopia, Fisk, Class of 07 etc.
I will slightly disagree with you about Hannah not liking Borat 2 as her character. Michael in the US Office loved Borat so that's probably why the showrunners chose that film as a choice for her. If anything, it's more egregious that we didnt get to see Hannah aka Michael struggle with using streaming services. I mean come on. Do you think Michael Scott, someone who didn't know how to use Powerpoint, could figure out Amazon Prime? Lol
You are right, Mr Flix, it is not amusing at all. The acting is very good - it's the material. An interesting contrast with Fisk, where the script is good, but the acting (or maybe the direction) leaves everything to be desired.
You know they thought the US Office was going to be canceled until season 4. Critics absolutely hated the first season and Michael. I think it worked out for them, no?
The first season of the American Office is dreadful and would get reviews like this one. A pale imitation of the British original. But they made it something different which succeeded because it wasn't just a rehash. You make an excellent point that the American version was given time to get to where it became really good and it kept getting renewed before it became a sensation. Sadly in the age of Netflix, anything not an instant hit is unlikely to get beyond a first season. BTW I haven't seen this Australian Office and I'm not bothered either way, I don't understand how offended people are about it though.
I think you were pretty fair with your take. Unfortunately this show lacks meaning, humor and relatable characters or situations. It'd have been interesting if the leadership were over the top 'politically correct' and everyone else was just normal... I think it would be relatable, timely and different to its predecessors.
I actually liked raygun because she gave me a laugh, everyone was hating but I thought they just needed to lighten up, this show however barely gave me a chuckle :(
I'm not sure if the irony was intended, but when the boss needed "persons of diversity" for a promotional video she literally just calls for nearly everybody or anybody in the show. Box ticked.
Oddly I think Swift and Shift Couriers actually nails Aussie Workplaces in its over the top early 2000s way. It has all layers of job roles, the petty workplace politics, workplace drama, people doing dodgey shit you name it. I can imagine many people hating it as well it was made in the early 2000s so it goes hard on its language, slurs and so on but it is still hilarious in how grounded it can be despite being completely over the top. The Office Australia seems like it was drawn up in some corporate boardroom and trying to please the yanks more so that make an Australian show for Australians.
It’s funny when you mentioned that some Politically Correct characters would have created that contrast but that’s already done really well with Utopia and I can imagine them trying to distance the office from the other Aussie show that’s better at what theyre trying to do
Hey, I totally disagree, this brand New show is really good. It is written with todays problematics, every character is awesome and very well played by the talented actors, yes there is 3 chracacters very close to the ones from the US series, but they are so well written that they make us want to know more about em. I'm not going to pretend that this is a particularly good show but I do think it deserves another season to see if it can find it's uniquely Australian voice. Doesn't anyone remember how much the first season of the US version sucked because they were trying to copy the UK version and it just didn't work because Americans have a completely different type of humour. Especially when there have already been two well known versions of this series (as well as 13 international versions you've probably never heard of from places like Canada, India and Germany) it's probably going to take at least one season to figure out what does and doesn't work for this show specifically.
