So, you're basically playing one of the most iconic Gavin Harrison's grooves on the Simon Phillips's Tama Emerald Starclassic?)) Dude, what a match! Great job!!
I don’t see too many drummers using that open handed method 😮 I think Simon originally did that for the “Look” At least that’s what I remember him saying in his drum clinic some years ago… in Hou. Tx.
Yes, he sometimes says, it was not just for the looks but also to prevent back and shoulder issues. But I really don't think, he was caring about his back when he was 20. I'm pretty sure it was just for the looks 😂. I switched to open handed very early, because once I've seen Simon doing some cool fills with his right hand, while keeping the hihat and snare beat with his left, and I thought "yes, I wanna do that, too". So I started practicing open handed playing. And after a while it felt so good that I completely switched to that.
He didn’t do it for the look. As his kit grew he found the best way to keep his hi-hat out of the way of the toms, and for ease of access to the toms, it needed to be placed lower. If you see his set up it’s nearly level with his snare so cross-handed wouldn’t work. Hence he started playing open handed as his kit grew more tentacles.
Yes, but he wanted his 10" tom to be aligned with the other toms. So the hihat got in the way. If he moved his 10" higher, it would have worked with a regular hihat and cross handed playing. But he preferred the look of all toms being at the same height, so it was indirectly for the looks 😄.
Yes, exactly. I've put the hihat pedal right next to my kick pedal, but then the hihat has to be angled so that the hihat cymbals don't hit the high tom.
@@davidbueckelmusic if I'm right, has it been mounted onto the bass drum? I was looking for how Simon had set it up and found a comment somewhere. And I came to know that there's a Tama hardware using which we can attach the hihat stand with bass drum and angle it however we like.
Simon uses the tama hihat attachment for the bass drum hoop. I didn't like it, because the pressure on the hoop is very high, and I was scared that one day my bass drum hoop might break. I am using two multi clamps, one on my hihat, one on my tom mount on the bass drum and I connect them with a cymbal boom arm. That works out perfectly.
@@davidbueckelmusic I understand now. That makes sense of much load we would put on the hoop. Man, that's a cool setup. Let me try checking out your videos to find how it looks. Or do you have an Instagram where I can find any picture?
Do you mean what audio technique? Shure Beta 181 on 10, 12, 13, 14 and 18 toms, Shure KSM137 on 15 and 16 toms, Beyerdynamic M201 on main snare, Shure Beta 52 on kicks and Shure SM 27 as overheads. For hihat, side snare and ambience sound, I use some percussion mics from Sonor from the 70s. I think they are actually some AKGs which were sold by Sonor back then. All the mics go into a Presonus StudioLive mixer and then into my computer.
parfaite maitrise! bravo

Hätte Lust, das mal zu mixen. :)
Hey mate,
Have you setup your hihat just like Simon?
A little angled towards you.

@@davidbueckelmusic no I mean hand technique
Oh. I play open handed german grip mostly. I sometimes switch to a french grip, depending on what I play.
