  • On September 9th, 2019, Sonic Adventure (and the SEGA Dreamcast!) will turn 20 years old here in the United States. To celebrate, I wanted to talk about why despite its age and no remake in sight, I still love the original Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure means a lot to me, and by the end of this review / retrospective / discussion / whatever video this is, you'll understand why Sonic Adventure means so much. My first videogame was Pokémon Silver Version (yes, I'm one of them) and while I've since fallen out of favour with the series it set me with a love of turn-based RPGs and might have influenced my fondness for animals, as well as an interest in folk legends brought on by the stories of Ecruteak City. Oddly enough the game that has impacted me most, Okami, I didn't play until I was 13 years old.

    Sonic Adventure does something that a lot of the modern games have trouble with, which is making the hedgehog fun to move around with. At the outset of 3D platforming, the most important thing that developers knew to target was just making their character comfortable to control and maneuver, and this game is no different. Sonic's weight, top speed and steering are great, and the smaller things like being able to run on walls at top speed and the Spindash Long Jump go a very long way in making him as enjoyable to use as he is. Nowadays the games prioritize gimmicks above the crucial fundamentals, and I think Sonic Team would be served well to make a game that takes a hard look at the basics while incorporating the best of what experimentation has brought out (I'd love to see the double jump and improved parkour implemented, personally.)
    I'm glad the game did so much to help you meet people, you're a fun guy to know.

    Hey, huge classic boy here that grew up with the megadrive, I actually think SA is the closest Sonic has been to being comparable to the classics in 3d and I love it to this day. The story has the right amount of edge (compare to S3&K), the gameplay is still momentum based and it wasn't more just due to tech limitations, the characters are spot on, and most of the game styles are fun (except Big). Frankly I never got why most other classic fans prefer SA2, I think it's more consistent, but the high of SA are much higher and you want to build your series on those.

    • @CrapMyHat
      @CrapMyHat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with you, SA2 I feel is where 3D Sonic stopped trying to feel like a classic game in the franchise and became its own thing, for better or worse. SA1 actually gives us the backstory to all the things introduced in S3&K and gave characters like Tails and Amy pretty good arcs as well that make sense from where there were before.

    What's odd is that, though I played SA2 a good few months before SA1 (well, SADX on the GameCube to be exact), SA1 is the title that always kept me coming back. To be fair, these and Mario Kart: Double Dash were some of the first console games I actually own. My only prior Sonic experience before the Adventure games was playing Sonic 1 on my sister's Genesis, so to me, these games represented a massive leap at the time. Plus, I'd be lying if I said I didn't still come back to playing through Sonic, Tails, and Gamma's stages every once in awhile!

    Man, I remembered playing this game at such a young age as well. I remembered this game being the only game I wanted to play when I had the chance to sit back and enjoy gamecube. I remembered getting stuck in this game so many times, but I always kept playing because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. I got hooked to Sonic and I think it somewhat influenced my liking to rock music as well. Like you, I'll always love this game. It was the first Sonic game I ever played and I was certainly not disappointed. There just aren't many games out there that are quite like this one. Ive been enamored with Sonic Adventure 1 since the day my friend let me borrow SADX way back. Everything about this game, in part, has shaped who I am today. Im not the massive sonic fan I used to be, but something about SA1 grabbed me, and still does. I remember looking up a bunch of facts and trivia for it that eventually led to watching beta footage, those hidden secrets videos that speepshighway makes, and becoming an active watcher of the modding community for this game and even sa2 to a lesser extent. The gameplay, story themes, and even the little details of the environment are all things that I still think about to this day.
    I think this video right here perfectly captures why I love this game. I cant put it all into words, but great video. Its amazing how a game like this even 20 years later can still evoke such emotions in us, even if some of it feels like accidental magic.

    Your background and experience of the game nearly perfectly mirror mine, even down to not having the memory card for the first while of having the game. The lack of saving forced me to get pretty good at the game, to the point where I could beat the game from nothing in a short afternoon.
    Your experience with the individual characters is pretty spot on, and the story was perfectly fine for its time. And I still listen to the soundtrack to this day. Although honestly, SA2, Heroes, and Shadow were all banger soundtracks directed by the same guy as SA1.

    I wasn't lucky enough for the Dreamcast version, BUT! I was lucky to get the DX Directors cut version as my very first Sonic game of all time myself, Sonic Adventure got me into Rock, what its like to be a hero and to one day want to be a hero in my own way, yes it may have some flaws but its flaws buckle under the number of positives it has, great story, great character development and it gave characters like Tails a chance to shine! and its as you said it has an EPIC soundtrack! my most favourite song from there is Open Your Heart by Crush 40, the best rock song of all time to me.

    I agree with everything you've said. What I liked about the game was how bold it was, how it didn't just try to be cool, it was. Sonic's theme being hard rock, and about how he has to do the right thing no matter what, is so brilliant.
    It's not even nostalgia that makes us like it. I've watched Vtubers play it for the first time and be amazed with how much better it is than any recent Sonic game. How other games don't even compare.
    Also, there's a mod on Game Banana that turns Froggy into the collectible item you get as the goal in Gamma's stages. I'm glad for it, because Big's stages were the only reason I wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend this game.

    I feel a very similar thing about this game, I love this video.
    I wasn't ever good enough to really get very far on my old windows XP computer with a keyboard, I was just a dumbass kid and video games weren't even my thing, I've always been an artist...
    But even still... It captivated me.
    This was my first Sonic game.
    Its impact was so strong on me as an artist, I still think of it and have it in mind all the time, there is something about its music and environments which resonate with me to this day, the way you describe of dreaming of being able to explore more of the games hub worlds is something I relate to in this way as well.
    The theme song of sonic "it doesn't matter" means an incredible amount to me also. it got me through what is so far what was one of the most stressful times of my life and kind of represents the Sonic that I love.
    I always feel as if I have to hamper my love for the game with "while this is kinda dumb" or something for other people who don't feel the same way, but here, I feel I can truly express my love for it as well.

    My story with Sonic Adventure:
    My very first Sonic game was Sonic Mega Collection Plus, I loved the classic Sonic games and became a Sonic fan, learning of various Sonic games, both good and bad.... my first 3D Sonic game was Sonic Unleashed, but I had always wanted to play SA 1 and Sonic CD... the two Sonic games I for the longest time, I was never able to get ahold of.... but I watched so many playthroughs and the Sonic X adaptation of SA 1... that I cared about Station Square before I ever got the chance to play the game... finally it came out for PS3 on PSN... I downloaded the game... and sure it wasn't perfect... but it was fun. Now Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite 3D Sonic games to play and replay... even over SA 2 (which I got on PS3 a couple months later).... that '4 things mapped to one button' frustrated me in SA 2, which was a good game... but I prefered the control of SA 1, simply because the action button wasn't anywhere near as wonky (seriously, I try to lightspeed dash in SA 2, but instead I summersault for example). I love Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and CD... since they were the three I never got a chance to play as an adult... they were mythical kind of to me... and when I played them as an older teen (I believe during my first playthrough of each I was 17) I had legit fun. I love SA 1 and this vid was great.

    Wonderful video Chris, perfectly sums up my feelings for this "Awesome game". It's just an artfully janky game that I fell in love with in 2003 and I always find myself going back to it. As for my other first games, that has to go to Rayman 2 & Spyro 3. Just the art, music and tone of Rayman and the structured and expansive gameplay of Spyro have made me love them until this day.
    Like you, I can't wait until we get another Sonic game similar in style to this one. It was always a joy to experience other aspects of this gameworld with Amy, Gamma and Big's campaigns. They may not be plot relivent but it was lovely seeing these side stories and just made the game feel so much bigger and expansive.

    Sweet video. All 3D games from that era didn't age well visually but somehow only SA1 gets flak because it's the easy target 🤔 Yeah it did impact me, it's an amazing game and a true, grand adventure (at least at the time and when I was 8). The robot's storyline made me cry which is difficult for me to do. So yeah it had it all that game - cutting edge graphics, characters with mouths that opened when they spoke (no games prior to 1999 did this at all), drama, exploration. And epic music. Real good game. As you said, every character has growth and a storyline which ultimately leads to a valuable life lesson. Can't say this magic has been recreated well since.

    The original DreamCast version is easily the best looking and best playing version. The DreamCast version is 1 of my fav games of all time. I played through it so many times that i have genuinely lost count. Also, the Chao garden kept me playing til early hours of the morning nearly every night for a year solid. The levels are brilliant blends of fun, fast platforming and visual spectacle. Every level (for sonic at least) has some amazing stand out moment that makes it unique. Sonic Adventure.... it's hard to put into words, but to me its a special game. It created a world that I wanted to be part of, to move around in and enjoy. Each player character gets their moment of glory, their day in the sun. The hub worlds inspired me with how much bigger the world could be. So much art and so many details, and just plain enjoyable.
    Sometimes I think of that azure blue sky and yellow sand down by Station Square, and just think of how peaceful and carefree it all is. The orange sunsets lit up my soul. I wasn't as young as MykonosFan when I played it, but it helped cement what I thought videogames should be. An experience in bright new worlds, and fun!
    Unfortunately, SA2 streamlined things, and left out a lot of what made SA fun to mess around in. And it had a grim/dark story with military that presaged and entire generation of videogames devoted to that entire them. It felt like for a while, it wasn't good to be hopful and optimistic.
    But SA had it figured out. Go out there, be a hero, have friends, have an adventure, have emotional moments and follow them up with moments of action, and always... most importantly... have a rockin' soundtrack to do it all to!
    Sonic Adventure, it's been awesome knowing you!

    • @MykonosFan
      @MykonosFan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree on SA2, but what I have to give that game is that the ending always makes me emotional every time. And I feel dumb for it, Shadow doesn't even actually die there! But still, I tear up anyway. Let's just blame nostalgia for that

    • @TheSofox
      @TheSofox 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MykonosFan Well, it was still a Sonic game, it didn't completely go over the edge into grim/dark/military stuff, it still held a lot of hopeful and emotional moments. Even a the very start Sonic was cracking jokes despite being under military arrest, and at the very end the message was about having faith and hope in humanity, and reflecting that ourselves. "Give them a chance to be happy!"

    Love this game. I get pretty depressed when I play this game because it almost feels like Sonic has been nothing but downhill from there on. Also, the only 3D Sonic game with a decent spindash. To me, this is the only Sonic game that truly found a way to translate the classic 2D formula into 3D. Like you mentioned, the characters (especially Tails and Knuckles) in the modern games are just misunderstood caricatures of what they used to be. And they wonder why Sonic fans are so miserable lol...

    Dude this video was just absolutely beautiful.
    And i agree that this game does get bashed on for some unnecessary reasons.
    Like seriously at least the spin dash feel smooth in this game then the sequel. People also made fun of some of the cutscenes and voice acting which is honestly pretty rough, but this was their first 3d sonic game, at least they tried to make it look decent. When you try to make something new, it may not turn out great as you anticipated it to be, but there's always room for improvement. I've also heard people say that this game was very glichy in some areas, but i just find that to be false because i never experience any glichs while playing this game at all.
    Like you said in the video, i enjoyed playing as the other characters too. Tails level are just so fun to broke especially in speed highway. Knuckles treasure hunting levels are alot better then SA2, the radars actually work in this game. For amy i heard people don't like her because she's slow and that is true but idc if she's slow or not at least i get to play as her. Big's levels are actually frustrating but once you get use to how big works its really not that hard. Gamma mech shooting was such a *3d blast*. The level design in this game is just so open and its great for making new shortcuts to beat the level faster. I just love this game to death man and i grew up playing sonic heroes and unleashed.

    SA1 was one of my first games in the series thanks to a friend of mine owning the PC version when we were in primary school. I played it heaps, but for a while afterwards I was on the "SA2 is better" side, but in the past few years I've definitely shifted back. SA2's overly linear levels, boring treasure hunting and not-as-good soundtrack make it not as appealing to me.
    I love Gamma and Tails' stories as well, I wish that level of sincerity still existed in the series. SA1 has one of my favourite OSTs in the franchise (Unleashed and Mania are its rivals), mainly for the jazzzzz. "It Doesn't Matter" is Sonic as a character in its purest form, I feel. The overall world aesthetics tickle my Classic Sonic fanboy preferences, and the charm is all over the place despite the game's jankiness. I miss Ryan Drummond and a lot of the other voice cast so much, because I find the current cast incredibly obnoxious. Scripts don't help in that regard.
    Also, on the topic of control, have you tried Sonic Utopia? It's the best 3D Sonic game ever (at least in terms of controls and momentum) and it's just a fangame. I'm not sure how often you play games on PC, but give it a go! It's silky smooth, and it looks like the final build will be coming out for SAGE this year, so I'm very excited.
    Oh yeah and shoutout to the FTCR gang towards the end. I hope Skyler drives through Del Taco again soon. Hey uh where's that Shadow LP

    • @telekinesticman
      @telekinesticman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MykonosFan I think the style of level design that Utopia offers could be really fun for a Sonic-styled Mario 64 collectathon, with a variety of objectives scattered across a large map rather than just getting to the end of a stage. Friends of mine who have never played Sonic before (and often make fun of the games as a result) saw Utopia and asked me "why isn't this an official Sonic game?" and "why don't they just make an open world Sonic game where you can run around like that?"
      I think that stuff is super interesting and something I'd like SEGA to explore. I guess it's kinda like if they could combine the hub worlds of SA1 with the actual stages into one big seamless map.

    I think the reason why Sonic Adventure hits so many good and bad notes is just because of how much they really went for making something interesting over traditionally "good". sonic 3 may have had cutscenes and added some character but this was the first time sonic was really in a big fleshed out world with an epic plot beyond just eggman being evil. theres 6 characters now with nigh on completely different goals beyond getting to the goal and it all folds into each other just to create something big, never been captured by another sonic game before or after

    I never owned a dreamcast and hadn't played SA until a couple of years ago. For me all my sonic related nostalgia is linked to Sonic 2. :)
    Regarding SA: Sure, it's janky as all hell but as you said, there's this freeform magic to it that the series has since discarded. I hate how the newer 3D sonic games just feel like this weird cobbled together mess of a racing game filled with quick time events and some 2D sections and also maybe a couple of slower paced and linear 3D sections. SA was much more cohesive in that way, and controlling the characters was a lot more fun because of how well momentum was handled. It takes balls to create a game where the player can reach insane speeds and jump / fly across half the map if they know what they're doing. They don't do that anymore. Now they just let you go fast in a controlled environment. That's not fun.
    There's this pretty amazing fanmade prototype game called Sonic Utopia which goes back to that freeform feel. Sega should seriously take notes.

    I have a love/hate relationship with this game. Like it can be broken as hell, the camera is frustrating, the controls at high speeds just doesn't work, the homing attack can be inconsistent, there are some really boring slow sections like some of the boss fights. But the music is perfect, finding secrets was satisfying as hell, the level variety was exciting, replay value is high, the different characters keeps things fresh, the choa garden is actually great, the hub worlds are relaxing and interesting to explore. But the animations are really bad, the cutscenes are awkwardly edited, certain sounds are just missing from some cutscenes, the sound mixing can be terrible where you can't hear dialogue over sound fx or music, the character models for random people are inconsistent and repetitive at the same time, but I actually love all those things about it as well, they are hilariously bad, it's part of its broken poorly constructed charm. I mostly praised here but when I play through Sonic Adventure it's half annoyance and frustration and half joy and nostalgia

    😄with all due respect and as a huge fangirl of this, i have to disagree with some minor points. i played this very recently when i was 22 years old. a few days recently, in fact! so i don’t have any real nostalgia for this and yet i fell in love with this game like no other and begun my emblem hunt of it even tho there were no game gear games to unlock and even tho i was playing the 360 version on my series s, so i was playing the bad port *of* the bad part, meaning i was basically 100%ing this out of sheer love for the game. and that can’t be all nostalgia, especially when this was my first exposure to it. i’m 114 emblems as of the time i’m writing this, currently only have chao, sonic and big left.
    another point i wanna disagree with, well two actually, are the humans and hubworld. they both belong in a sonic game. sonic is a surreal fantasy that is distinct from the likes of crash or mario or kirby. the existence of humans doesn’t clash with sonic, it gives it more identity and helps it stand out among the best of them. without them, sonic would inevitably become just another Ty the tasminian tiger and if you don’t know who that is, then that just proves my point XD.
    as for hub worlds, you made them seem unimpressive conceptually, but they utterly blew my mind when i first played this. for 16 of my life years, i was so used to sonic transitioning to levels immediately. i never really cared for how he gets there, even when i saw level transitions in S3&K and mania, i didn’t care too much for them. but SA1 was different. SA1 did not immediately start you off in the next level. it forced you to PHYSICALLY travel from each level and i just never seen anything like that done this way. especially not in sonic. i’m a huge gta fangirl yet even i feel like the hubworlds were so much more interesting to explore compared to san andreas or both versions of liberty city.
    lastly, i love big the cat!! this might a huge stretch to say this when i’ve only played the game for a few weeks, but it resonated with me so deeply that it might possibly be my new favorite game of all time. this is my fully honest take as a person who played this in her early adulthood years. no nostalgia, no nothing.
    but yea i’m incredibly happy for this vid, thanks for spreading more love for this! :’D
    sorry if i sounded a bit too critical, i actually almost never comment on yt vids, but i felt compelled to leave my piece here because i just feel so passionate about this game!! don’t worry, i’m aware you said something along the lines of not being objective about the game, so i feel pretty happy that i watched this!! :’D
