Gimbal + Monopod = Cinematic Crane Shots!

  • When you combine the Zhiyun Crane or other handheld Gimbal with a monopod you can create some epic crane or jib shots that almost looks like drone footage even. The crane and monopod together is the perfect indie film tool for getting creative cinematography for your videos.
    The Zhiyun Crane + Monopod lets you get high and low shots all in one quick sweep without the heavy and expensive gear required with a real crane or jib. You can get some insane gimbal shots with this rig.
    I used the Zhiyun Crane V2 with the Sony a6500 and a Manfrotto monopod for all of the gimbal shots and my Sony a7s for the behind the scenes footage. #crane #gimbal #monopod

      I once had a gimbal snap off of a monopod like this is a freak accident. Broke the camera. It was sad. But I think that it was just really bad luck. The screw just completely snapped. I’ve gone back to doing this technique again. Just have been extra careful.

    • @rattoh
      @rattoh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Freddie sorry to hear that, now I'm scared to try this with a heavy setup

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dang dude! That sucks. Breaking a camera or lens is the worst feeling ever. If you can use the stronger 3/8 screw instead of 1/4 20, it should hold up better. I haven't had any issue with it yet, but I keep it a very light setup w/ a6500 and small lens.

      Heather Byrd thanks!! Yeah, honestly it’s a little terrifying putting expensive gear at the end of it, but it’s been sturdy and worked so far....

    • @PraktycznieWiem
      @PraktycznieWiem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      what would I do, is to put just a piece of a string tied both to gimbal and monopod. If that screw brakes, still it may prevent your stuff from falling and hitting mother earth ;)

    • @donmichael3
      @donmichael3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PraktycznieWiem You can get such strings online, they’re called tether cable. Usually made of metal, and are used to secure GoPro’s and such cameras, when they are mounted with suction cups on the exterior of a vehicle. Just wanted to let you know, have a good one!

  • @dodmedia
    @dodmedia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Awesome stuff! Nice delivery and great examples. That somersault shot was sweet! A tip to others for getting a slightly easier movement with this setup is to stand to the side of the monopod and use one of your most forward arm as a pivot point instead of the back arm, so you hold the monopod with both hands spread out maybe a couple of feet and use your back hand as the weight to raise/drop the jib. It'll give you slightly less reach than holding it straight on with both hands like you're doing in the video, but the result will be super stable and easier to maneuver. Just be careful with that tiny screw holding all your gear to the monopod dude! Enough momentum at a right angle when you're slowing down at the end of your movement could snap the little thing!

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! Yeah, I think that's some really great advice. Using one arm as a pivot and the other as a counterweight will definitely make for even more steady shots. I'll have to give it a try. Yeah, I'm definitely cautious not to put excess pressure on the mount.

    i'm glad some of youtubers are using this idea now. I've been doing this for a year in wedding since drone is not allowed indoor during ceremony for it will surely take too much attention because of the noise. However i find it more safe to use my light stand than monopod, it's a bit more sturdy i just don't spread the legs and just use it instead for better grip.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Click Faith yeah! It’s a great technique, especially for those times when you can’t launch the drone. I’ve heard people talk about using light stands and boom poles, that’s cool it works well for you!

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most of the time I'm using continuous auto focus with this setup, especially when I'm shooting wide open around f.28 But when I'm shooting more stopped down around f11 and above I will set the focus before hand manually.

    I use this as well but must say that you NEED to get a monopod with a 3/8 inch mounting screw such as the manfrotto 50 dollar monopod. I have tried so many different monopods and this is the only one with the right size screw for the zhi yun crane. Go to best buy and try it yourself. Way stronger than the one you are using.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will Prowse Yeah that’s good advice. I actually realized after filming this that my monopod has a 3/8 inch screw natively and same with the crane, which I was using an adapter with to go 1/4 20. I now only use the setup with the 3/8 screw and threads because it’s much more robust and sturdy!

    hi Chadwin. I have the Ronin S. and the extra base bracket that screws in to the two holes for extra sequirty, Sony A7r2, Small rig cage and all that and the obiaous question for me is... is just any monopod durable enough for this or how do I find out. I allready have to monopods. One very cheap, but gets the jub done when it just has to carry the camera ect and one even light, Manfrotto, and I really dont wanna go with that one due to the lightness of it. Any rekommendations? :-)

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Windfeld personally I would be very careful with how much weight you put on the end of your monpod. It sounds like you have a pretty heavy setup. If you can reduce weight in any way and use your most sturdy monood, maybe try it out over your bed first to see if there are any weak spots and if it holds up.

    Nice info. I’m interested in getting shots like that but I struggle selecting the right aperture... what aperture did you use for this first shots with the reveal of the lady, and then the guy jumping? I noticed everything seems in focus... thanks

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it can be hard to keep things in focus--funny I JUST posted a video about this--th-cam.com/video/98AHgKLnBfU/w-d-xo.html
      I believe I was shooting at about f2.8 for both of those shots. Believe it or not, the continuous autofocus on the a6500 w/ Sony glass is actually pretty good, so it kept focus on my subjects rather nicely. However, if you don't have that, I'd recommend stopping down to f8 or lower and setting your focus to infinity so you can keep everything in focus.

    • @andrescolintv
      @andrescolintv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chadwin Smith thanks! I have the autofocus but for those shots when I have the camera up there before bringing it lower to reveal the subject, the cam automatically focuses in the background, so when I bring it down, it autocficuses on the subject and it doesn’t looks smooth like in your shot.

    Which camera we can use for gimbal + monopod. Some people say it would broke down because dslrs are heavy.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want to use a relatively light DSLR to relieve stress on the gimbal+monopod connection point. I use the Sony a6500 w/ a light 35mm lens, so it's perfect! The Zhiyun Crane V2 is also relatively light. Links to all the gear I use is in the description!

      @-SUNSHINE-192 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean, it feels like a long lever will just damage part of the thread on the monopod / gimbal connection , however...... the lever is actually the other end of the link - so it doesn’t matter how long the monopod, it’s not extra stress.

    • @PraktycznieWiem
      @PraktycznieWiem 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@-SUNSHINE-192 yes, when you hold it, or move relatively slow. With fast movements it does make the difference, since the radius is bigger and accelerations at the end o the stick are also rising. Still, I don't know if it changes so much to make this poor screw brake ;)

    Hey! Have you experienced any issues with the weight of the gimbal bending or putting non-designed weight on the monopod? I got a generic monopod, but curious how strong the actual mounting location is when the monopod is held horizontally? I’m freaking out that my gimbal and camera will fall? Any tips?

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keaton Smith yeah, I would be very cautious with it and test it out first over your bed or couch in case it does fall off. As long your monopod is a solid build it should be fine. I don’t extend any of the lengths all the way, just to be sure it doesn’t bend too much. If you have the option to use the 3/4 thread over the 1/4 20, I would.

    • @chadwin

      It's actually pretty sturdy! I haven't been worried about the joint at all because the monopod I'm using is high quality and so is the Crane's build. I definitely wouldn't do it with a heavier rig or cheapo monopod though.

    the only problem though is that it can snap. That's what happened with my crane(original verison v1) with relatively light sony a6500+10-18 and carbon Xsories monopod. I wonder what's going to happen with a heavier setup.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's not a surefire thing and could definitely break if you go rough on it, use a heavy setup or maybe have a faulty/cheap monopod. Sorry yours broke man! When I use the 3/4 thread it's actually pretty solid and robust!

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use any monopod really as long as it has a 1/4 20 or 3/8 screw. I'd recommend using a stable and rigid one though that can hold the weight.

    • @HamishJoy
      @HamishJoy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine has 1/4. I can switch to 3/8, but my zhiyun v2 is 1/4, and I don't have an adapter. I hope it's good enough to hold securely.

    I've seen and used this technique with my ronin S and Gh5. My monopod broke and my ronin and camera crashed on the floor. My heart stopped for a minute but nothing happened. I would recommend this only if your setup is really light (zhyiun crane + really lightweight camera)

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That really sucks, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you! I would've had a heart attack. I 100% agree though, you should really only do this with a lighter camera, lens and gimbal and a very sturdy monopod. I use my lightest setup for this. The Ronin S is Super heavy!
