Chris Hau Hair down... but you knew this-that’s why you left it down for the vlog! ;). What about a spin in place shot? Rotation about a central place can be cool, especially outside or inside an interesting building.
@ 3:50, the reason why walking backwards gives you a smoother shot is because walking backwards force’s you to walk on your toes! Walking and running on your toes greatly reduces the bobbing effect that some get when walking forward. This was a baseball technique for outfielders to keep our head steady when running so fly balls don’t bounce around in our vision! The key to eliminating camera movements when walking or running is to never let your heels touch the ground!
Great content mate. Your videos are probably my favorite in terms of educational and business value. 9 Minutes feel like 3. Learned a ton. Easy to understand and consume. Just a big winner in total. keep it up
Very direct, straight to the point, bullet by bullet discussion of diff topics. It is so educational and entertaining. The instructions are so detailed and simplified. Even a non-pro can go along. Thank you for sharing...💞💞
Tthanks for this helpful vid. I started in the video biz at age 34 and am now exactly twice that age. I'm not quite as nimble now, but I know my new hip in early 2021 will help me keep a better level forward movement on those low gimbal shots! You do a very good job of not doing the up/down bobbing many gimbalers have on YT vids. Merry Christmas 2020...and good-effing-bye, 2020!!!
I am brand new to video, I have been a still photographer for many yrs, but changing formats to be more creative, and I love straight to the point videos without alot of useless intro fluff. subscribed and can't to watch and learn more.
Ya know, Chris, it's the subtle things about your videos that I like. The fact that your two doorways are contrasting colors makes me happy inside. lol
ZigsVision I just bought a crane 2 now im binge watching pro-tips. $549 but man i had alot of shake beforehand on my canon m50. Now its buttery smooth, i must add when purchasing a gimbal first thing you should do is slow the pan speed settings down but after you do that it looks super-cinematic. the joystick pan takes some getting used to its like using a shallow nintendo N64 wiggly button. Its all rather large in person, the carry case is a must. Im not a fan of the manfrotto plate setup but its the industry standard. You have to hit a button and untwist a knob to remove it from the gimbal, then you have to then find a coin or similar and untwist the plate from the camera itself. Most cameras that need a gimbal have bottom mounted batteries so theres that. Sometimes i miss handheld "freehand" so i usually switch it up for a nice combination. If you want clients they pretty much expect gimbal looking footage. I also have the NEEWER $50 mechanical gimbal and it was a headache to work with. But ownership is definitely a learning curve. It has paramters that need to be calibrated for optimal efficiency, Consistently re-balancing the payload. BTW balancing it is just ensuring your camera is level by adjusting the position of the 3 arms 1 by 1 and manually tightening them. Hope i didnt miss anything. O the app is funny you actually pull up your phone camera in the app not the mounted and connected dslr/ mirrorless camera attached to your gimbal,. I assume it tries to match positions by the image you select on your phone. weird i know but effective. i mount my phone to my camera hot shoe and select tracking targets that way. i thought it was not working correctly until i did my research. Its worth the investment, but only when your serious and you know why you need it Pro-tip on the m50 is turn the servo mode off because the canon m50 will try to autofocus all the time and it makes using it complicated because it will change focus on you. If you need to change focus after you set your initial focus you can either tap the screen or on my gimbal it has a knob that allows me to slowly dial it in. It works amazing on the m50! fully featured! But hey if you find this informative . subscribe to my channel im thinking of doing informational vids, i just recently shot my first music video with the m50. It was without the crane 2 and it was super shaky, i found alot of flaws that only i noticed that i am working against now. On the gimbal im able to use 4k on non servo makes the contrast based autofocus system worthwhile. I also use that 50mm 1.8 its a must have. the amount of light it pulls in low light situations is worth the 50 bucks. Considering a speed-booster, i hear good and bad things about them. I want it because it can pull a whole 2 stops of extra light meaning turning a kit lens into a decent lens. like being able to go from aperature 3.5 to a low 2 something. Amazing stuff in theory. And it makes it more close to full frame. 50mm=55ish instead of 50=85mm ish.
3:50 the reason why walking backwards tends to be more smooth is because when you move backwards, your step starts at the toes and slowly and steadily progresses onto the ball of the foot and finishes at the heels, whereas if you move forwards, often you'll begin your step by hitting the ground with your heels and then moving onto the ball of your foot and then your toes. This initial impact of your heels hitting the ground will produce some shake across your entire body, and even with the best gimbals, it will still show! If you don't believe me, try kicking the ground with the front of your foot, and then with your heel. Odds are you'll feel the impact from a heel kick throughout your entire body, whereas kicking it with the front of your feet won't go much farther than your knees! Okay that's all! Great vid Chris!
1. that's true. I'm glad I'm into ballroom dancing, because we practice "gliding" over the floor a lot. It helps me a lot. 2. I still like the Steadycams over gimbals just because of these bumps 🤔
To walk smoother going forward try walking by putting your toe down first then heel. It feels weird at first but it is noticeably smoother. Its a trick used in marching bands so you get less bounce in your walk.
Great info, examples and presentation. My first Gimbal arrived 2 days ago and I am already trying these shots! So many tricks and tips to pickup. Thanks
Hi Chris, I'm having trouble doing a full roll. The only mode in which the joystick controls roll is in F mode, but when using the Joystick left/right, it only rotates by around 90 deg, then the camera starts slanting and the roll stops. I also have the Crane 3 Lab. @05:25
I noticed walking backwards is smoother because you naturally walk toe to heal, which reduces the up and down motion. Most people don't walk heal to toe when walking forward.
When using the parallax effect or orbital shot as you call it,, are you simply walking around the subject or are you using the joystick to keep it centered or panning by turning your wrist on the gimbal to keep the subject in frame? Thanks!
if you had to choose, what lens would you pick to shoot videos on a ronin sc if you only had a sony 12-24mm, sony 90mm macro and a sony 50mm? with a sony a7 III thanks!!
Very useful. But the link to the gimbal and the gimbal package ends up on an Amazon page that says that it's unavailable. Maybe it's been upgraded. If so, could you update the link, please.
If you walk in reverse, the tip of your feet touch the ground first and you get better suspension, whereas going forward your heels touch first and no matter how much you try, it's not gonna be as steady. Get softer shoes to make it better or use a hoverboard when available (or get a z axis suspension)
Also, DO NOT pay attention to how the shot is taken when you're in the cinema for the first time for a movie (do it the second time or at home) I can't break out of the habit now and it ruins the film watching experience :( Just do it at home guys 🤣
I've got the DJI Ronin-S which basically does everything this one does BUT it gets so freaking heavy with the way you have to carry it in extended amount of time! How does this one feel with that angled handle as opposed to a "stick handle" that the Ronin-S basically has? I'd change my gimbal in a heartbeat if this could improve the carrying feel!
I still cannot nail correctly the parallax effect when using the gimbal, always feel the motor of the gimbal stops the smooth motion, it was easier to do it with a Glidecam but that one had other issues to keep the damn thing steady
Cool tips and nice video, but it really put me off that your eyes were very frequently slightly out of focus. Is it because the video AF on the A9 is just not that good? Never saw that with any Dual AF based camera like the 1DX II.
Excellent content as per uuusual :D Out of curiousity; any chance you might do a color grading tutorial with the a9? Camera settings and post processing would be super dank helpful 10/10!
Great video! I think that electronic gimbals can really step up your work as a videographer A LOT. Many people say the would rather go with the "good old steadycam"... However, a lot of the shots that you suggested here cannot be done good enough (or not at all) with a steadycam! Especially for travel filmmakers the variety of shots and angles that you can get with these things clearly make your work look more interesting.
how much is that gimbal setup? I think the focus and f stop rings are a great touch an allow you to capture some incredible shots you couldn't normally get.
What are you guys use Adobe Premiere instead of DaVinci Resolve? DaVinci has far far better color grading tools. And is not a resource hog. Also resolve Works faster
What movements did I miss? Throw some dope suggestions below :)
UH, THE SLO-MO HAIR DROP, MAN!
The "oh shit I panned wrong" clip!
The Whip and Nay Nay
Too much movement, I mean shoulder wiggle haha
Chris Hau Hair down... but you knew this-that’s why you left it down for the vlog! ;).

Am I the only one who is not really able to afford a gimbal but still watched the whole video?
FBHD Tech pretty much, yeah
I don’t even need one (yet/at all), but I still watched the whole video 😂
I see a few, here and there, on Facebook Marketplace and I'm like "Do you offer financing?" lol
save money a little every month and you will get it in 1 year period.
Can't afford it, and I'm still using my old DSLR from 2012. Still watched the whole video :)
Pette,Matti, Chris, Daniel and Lizzie are the Canadian TEAM !!!! you inspired me..
I don't know how you don't have a bigger audience. These tips are A1. Keep them coming!
Great content mate. Your videos are probably my favorite in terms of educational and business value. 9 Minutes feel like 3. Learned a ton. Easy to understand and consume. Just a big winner in total. keep it up
This is my first time watching you, and you are the most happiest/bubbleiest dude I have ever seen- Keep up the good attitude!

Just got me a gimbal .. learning new things . Thanks for the awesome video
The world needs more people like you bro !

Ayeee Chris back with the heat
Chris in 2019: We work for companies like Corona-
People in 2019:
Me in 2020: Companies like what?
the first move helps the more you have in the bg and if you start low and raise to eye level as you walk around the subject.
So much fun inside the video.. good job
Just got our DJI RS2 gimbal. Going to try try these tips and moves now! Thanks for the video.
Love it Chris! Great video.

AronBagel well this kind of blew my mind 😂
Grateful for you guys!
Probably won’t get a gimbal for quite awhile but when I do I will definitely use these tips
thanks i just got my new gimbal very good pro tips there, anyone using them as well?
Thanks for the video just bought my first gimble.!
Thank you for this tutorial. Very helpful. Stay safe.
Some great tips. Going to head out with Mrs and gimbal (well and the camera) after we are done snowboarding for today, and give them a shot.
Wadger Catcher gives those shots a shot?? :) also snowboarding bring me
@@thechrishau yeah give the shots a shot!!! I'll send you an Instagram dm with my view from the balcony!!
Excellent tips, thanks!
love the soft lighting and background
That was the most cinematic unboxing I had ever seen
Great info, examples and presentation. My first Gimbal arrived 2 days ago and I am already trying these shots! So many tricks and tips to pickup. Thanks
The design of this gimbal is so sick. I want to film so many skate videos with it.
Right???
I love my crane 3! Thanks for this video😀
Just awesome as usual.
IBIS on or off when using a gimbal?
Awesome video Chris👍🏼
subbed THANK God Zhiyun made the 3 and the 2 2.0 v2 v2.0 stuff is all in the past 4,5, 6, 7. 8 is the way to go
Hi Chris, I'm having trouble doing a full roll. The only mode in which the joystick controls roll is in F mode, but when using the Joystick left/right, it only rotates by around 90 deg, then the camera starts slanting and the roll stops. I also have the Crane 3 Lab. @05:25
Found it! It can be done in V (vertical) mode, double click on POV.
Ideal for frof.thanks for giving us hints.
I can't stop watching ur great tips..
Thanks Chris. Nice tips. You are one of the best 😘
Jacky Nguyen :)
We are going to be comparing our luscious locks of hair at NAB! Hahah great video man! Looking forward to meeting you and Lizzie!

Amazing video, thanks mate 👏
Never mind.. But your tips are really badass!!!! Can't await to get mine yo.
Great video! What is your favourite mm focal length 24,35,50 when using qimbal?
For 4:43 did you get the camera upside down, with a long handle gimbals cannot get that low id guess :)
This video is so awesome! I wish I had more teach like Chris during my school years.
Very useful. But the link to the gimbal and the gimbal package ends up on an Amazon page that says that it's unavailable. Maybe it's been upgraded. If so, could you update the link, please.
How would the Gimbal use a zoom motor? If the lens is zooming in, wouldn't the extension of the lens cause the gimbal to fall out of balance?
Cannot wait to get a gimbal ... in 2 years haha dope tips thanks 🙏
Samantha Muench takes time to build up the kit!
are there cheaper ways to getting the same results please love the videos.. i have a hcx1000 video camera and tripod
I love how this video is still useful even if you don't own a gimbal.
this is GOLD
I love this tutorial. pretty helpful. I'm a starter in this and literally don't have the required yet. what tips can you give me for basics?
Nice Chris! Great shots
Very nice video shot thank you for sharing I’m still learning
If you walk in reverse, the tip of your feet touch the ground first and you get better suspension, whereas going forward your heels touch first and no matter how much you try, it's not gonna be as steady. Wait, crane shot on a zhiyun crane, pun intended?
Also, DO NOT pay attention to how the shot is taken when you're in the cinema for the first time for a movie (do it the second time or at home) I can't break out of the habit now and it ruins the film watching experience :(
Just do it at home guys 🤣
These are great tips, Chris!
Great tips Chris! Definitely want to try that roll movement 😀
Thanks for sharing the tips.
Great tips man! Thanks for the video!
Very good content, clear and direct.
Love your videos!
GOOD TIPS..GOT TO USE THESE👍💯🔥
I love my Crane Plus, any Zhiyun-Tech gimbal is a Game Changer !
Nice informative video. Hey question. How do you focus when you get close and away to you subject? Manual?
Can we talk about the podcast real quick? The trailer sounded so crisp! Can't wait till it drops!
Suhail Adam thank you!!! First episode next week.
i know that bridge! love this- thanksss
Thank you for the awesome tips
Great video Chris Thank you for all the valuable information!!
Super cool I can do this in my lg wing. Thank you for the tip🤙🏽
Great video Chris enjoyed this video. I have decided to subscribed to your channel
Can you use an iPhone to shoot with it rather than a DSLR camera?
This will help with our videos a lot! Thank you!
What gimbal mode do you use in orbiting subject move tnx.
I've got the DJI Ronin-S which basically does everything this one does BUT it gets so freaking heavy with the way you have to carry it in extended amount of time!
How does this one feel with that angled handle as opposed to a "stick handle" that the Ronin-S basically has?

WerkWurk Productions Does look a lot easier to hold this one and a bit more stable I think
I still cannot nail correctly the parallax effect when using the gimbal, always feel the motor of the gimbal stops the smooth motion, it was easier to do it with a Glidecam but that one had other issues to keep the damn thing steady
That intro B-Roll Gimbal moves though! Great tips for the video Chris!
Seiyoshin all about the zoom!

Jags you got it! I’ll mention that in future videos :)
I’m a beginner but it looks I still have a lot to learn..and I like your hair up..
Hair down brotha. Let er flowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
You’re the best! Love your content and been here for a long ass time!! Hair down it’s wavy haha
You're awesome I'm subscribing
Firstly, hair down. But really both options are great. Second, keep making videos like this! Very helpful for me
This was great! Gimbals are great.. Your hair is great! Have you ever tried half-up?
Great video! I think that electronic gimbals can really step up your work as a videographer A LOT. Many people say the would rather go with the "good old steadycam"... Great video Chris. As a newbie I wished if you had also mentioned the mode that the gimbal was in for each shot.
Nice side note about using the larger lens for the parallax orbit!
Shawn Walls I want people to be crushing
how much is that gimbal setup? I think the focus and f stop rings are a great touch an allow you to capture some incredible shots you couldn't normally get.
Great tips! I'm a huge fan of the first movement as well. The Crane 3 looks awesome!!
Up. Definitely up.
What are you guys use Adobe Premiere instead of DaVinci Resolve? DaVinci has far far better color grading tools. And is not a resource hog. Also resolve Works faster
Still got the zhiyun crane 2(fully updated) with L handle and I absolutely love it 😁
Would love to see more videos of this kind. Thanks for sharing.
