There seems to be a lot of talk about how many gears this GT had. I have trawled through tons of literature, websites and the local library. All the articles point to the fact that the GT at Daytona was the Mk II version. It housed a huge Galaxie 7 litre v8, that while it wasn't the highest revving engine could plug along all day at 6000 rpm without any problems, which made it ideal for long races. The Mk II GT carried a ZF 5 speed box or the T44 4 speed box. This is perfect. The perfect scenes for the song. Just what I was looking for. Its one thing to have a static image, its another to have a racing video with racing song.
Every time I see this scene. what makes me smile more, the fact that Carol Shelby had the balls to do what he did in telling Ken M to go flat out. Or that a top exec had no control and had to eat humble pie!
I like how he shifts into the nonexistent 6th gear at the end. He was so focused on winning his gearbox time traveled into the future and borrowed a few parts from the 2006 Ford GT
If you count the shifts, he is actually shifting into fourth (the final gear in the GT40) as his final shift, during the earlier slo mo scene you can see the shifter in second, up to third, then fourth
I always felt like the movie was less Ford v Ferrari and actually Miles and Shelby vs Ford in a lot of ways they had to fight the executive to get what they needed to win.
One thing I hate of the movie its the thing they make something awesome of Ford beating Ferrari, Ford is an empire, Ferrari is pure passion. The life of Enzo Ferrari is more like Shelby, he race first at the beginning with Alfa Romeo, then have their own team "Scuderia Ferrari" with Alfa Romeo cars and then he starts to make cars to have money for his passion, the Grand Prix, he didnt go to competition to win on sunday and sell on monday, he sell cars to pay their wins.
@@youtuytumaddrre I agree with you that narrative definitely sours the experience and I think at the core is the love of cars and racing. I always observed that nod by Mr. Ferrari at the end as him acknowledging Shelby & Miles's accomplishment and that kind of revealed that it was about the love and passion they shared.
@@czoom51 Yeah I see but, the movie should be called "Ford beating Ferrari" , because we didnt know nothing about Ferrari, Ferrari beat Ford the first year, we dont know whats thinking on Ferrari. On "Rush", you see a duel between Lauda and Hunt and you see both points of view, you see where they coming, you maybe prefer Hunt or maybe Lauda but you can emphatise with both of them and see their good and bad points, but looking how great is Lauda is the way you can look how great is Hunt. In that movie, you only now about Ferrari is the rival to beat and a little of the pride of Enzo. Ferrari only exists on this movie to be beaten by Ford.
Actually the true story is Miles was really beloved and important to Ford and really good friends with Leo Bebe. This movie has been Hollywoodized to the extreme. Not really 100% accurate.
By pushing each gear before that, all the way into the red, he stretched his gears out and could have easily still had that last gear with enough power to pass.
This is the reason people need to push there cars more just because one company makes extremely fast cars doesn't mean the one your against is one of those cars
Fun fact, (this is kind of featured in the movie). Ford was actually just going to buy Ferrari including their racing team. Enzo Ferrari added a clause that said he kept control of the racing team and supposedly he and his lawyer just stood up after Ford executives saw the contract and said, "let's go eat". Following this event Henry Ford ll was pissed and originally hired an elite team of British mechanics and engineers to design the car. They did, and both the primary car AND the backup were destroyed in wrecks leading Ford to hire Carrol Shelby and Ken Miles leading to the story we have here resulting in 10x the car they would've gotten from the British team. Ken Miles was badass and so is the car.
He'd been limited to under 7,000 'cuz interference by the Ford exec who wants Miles, and Shelby, to lose. Shelby said "screw the interference" and let him loose. If you push it too hard, you'll blow the engine and not finish the race, much less win. Race driving is all about "how hard can I push this car without wiping out or blowing the engine?" Ken Miles was a master at feeling right where the car was at its limits and not going past that point. In the big race at Le Mans, the Italian driver didn't have that sense. He pushed it too hard, the oil pressure dropped (meaning something failed) and ... game over. That's why the comment about "it'll come apart." Shelby is trusting that Ken knows the car, has a feel for what it can handle and what it can't. There's so much more to this scene than just cool music and going fast.
@@Meower68 The early Daytona's used 289's and could "just" keep up with the Ferraris, but had better fuel mileage, so Ford thought they could win by having fewer fuel stops. But...the 289's couldn't last the whole race, and they kept coming apart. The 427's had more torque down at a more long-lasting RPM range, so they could use a better gear ratio...
One of the better scenes in this movie. I love how he pulls up next to dude and makes him think he's pushing his car. Then pops that last gear....man that was epic
*Years later...* Polyphony Digital: Hey! Can I use ur Ford GT Concept??? Ford: errm... sure, but- Polyphony Digital: OK!! *proceeds to make the Ford GT LM Spec II* Henry Ford and his son in heaven: 0_o
Yeah, looked like a starting scene from Ridge Racer Type 4. Well ok, maybe a replay from Assetto Corsa... Reality and "grit" seem to be one of the most forgotten things in movies since I dunno, early 00's? So polished, blurry and floaty that it makes one almost nauseous.
@@jrmc.8324 why does no one seem to understand, not every gearshift is an upshift. He's up and down shifting all the time to stay high in rpm for maximum power. If he put it in 4th gear earlier like you said he should have done, the engine would run at lower rpm producing less horsepiwer and less torque would go to the wheels so less acceleration meaning he might not have been able to actually pass him.
But seriously, if an accomplished driver tells you how much a car can give: Listen to them. They don't go by mechanics, they go by sound and feeling. And he most likely felt the car was a little underpowered keeping it at the revs he was at. There's a power band for every vehicle that gives you that boost, the GT was clearly capable of having that band extend past 7k.

@@st3phn158 I hope you know that 1660s cars didnt have 5th gear..
How to win a race a Daytona, race the whole time in 5th gear and when you have a good one-liner ready to go, remember you have 6th gear and shift..
So you don't know that the last couple of laps is where they try to take lead? Also just because you only see them upshift doesn't mean they don't downshift the gears. Plus you can't shift early. Don't tell me it was a joke, because it is stupidity.
@@aswin9366 it's things like this which if it bothers you, you just ignore it.
Kinda true, but that ignores downshifting for corners entirely.
Wrong just downshift into first and get dummy high rpm and use freedom bias to not have car litterly vaporize itself to completely shit on Ferrari
what made it more insane was that it was 3rd gear since the gt40 only has 4 gears lmao
After pulling last place for the whole race, and being able to take 1st in Need for Speed. Truly an epic feeling
In any game it’s that same feeling
In motorsport, two overtakes in one lap is called extreme. The way he passed people on the straight was a disaster to see.
This is perfect. The perfect scenes for the song. Just what I was looking for. Its one thing to have a static image, its another to have a racing video with racing song.
This has to be one of the best racing movies ever made
well its certainly better than driven lol. but id say that days of thunder and rush are just as good as this.

@@ilhaamashraf3800 actually the best one is the movie cars
Have you seen shuto kousoku trial?
Every time I see this scene. what makes me smile more, the fact that Carol Shelby had the balls to do what he did in telling Ken M to go flat out. Or that a top exec had no control and had to eat humble pie!
I like how he shifts into the nonexistent 6th gear at the end. He was so focused on winning his gearbox time traveled into the future and borrowed a few parts from the 2006 Ford GT
The GT40, like most race cars, has a dog leg gearbox. That puts 5th gear in the place where 6th gear would be in a "normal" shift pattern.
@@hellothere9262 dude this reply is a tight slap to this dumbass who don't know shit but still chooses to shit in the comment section
Do you even know how to drive a stick or you just used to seeing the same pattern they use in every video game?
@@user-neo71665 i daily drive a stick??? maybe chill the fuck out
If you count the shifts, he is actually shifting into fourth (the final gear in the GT40) as his final shift, during the earlier slo mo scene you can see the shifter in second, up to third, then fourth
And nearly cost Shelby his company.
"I thought we where keeping him under 6,000"
The other guy:"SHUT UP DON
When I saw the movie I was like "HE HAD ANOTHER GEAR?!"
then he switched again and I was like "WHAT THE- HOW?!?!"
Because shifting through infinite gears is how cars in movies work. Adds drama for people who don’t know how cars work i guess.
He shifted down and up ...
He probably down shifted to go around the corners
NANI?!?
By pushing each gear before that, all the way into the red, he stretched his gears out and could have easily still had that last gear with enough power to pass.
2:38 was close to the one that explodes the engine
This was a great edit loved how the sound of cars and music blended very well
0:14 that excessive acting shake after taking off the sunglasses
You need to shake when you take off ur glass.. correct way😂
Ken after he realised he needs to go 7000+RPM:
*SHOWTIME*
ALROIGHT
The key for winning: INFINITE GEARS.
No, actually, you downshift in the corners to actually be able to turn, and then upshift to get more speed on the straights and VERY slight turns

Yeah, looked like a starting scene from Ridge Racer Type 4. Well ok, maybe a replay from Assetto Corsa... Reality and "grit" seem to be one of the most forgotten things in movies since I dunno, early 00's? So polished, blurry and floaty that it makes one almost nauseous.

yeah and at the end, why didnt he put this last one earlier... a dumb scene srsly

The reality is that the Ken Miles / Lloyd Ruby GT-40 won the 1966 Daytona 24 Hours by eight laps, not on a last lap pass.
3:07 is no one gonna talk about the "how bout that"
But seriously, if an accomplished driver tells you how much a car can give: Listen to them. They don't go by mechanics, they go by sound and feeling. And he most likely felt the car was a little underpowered keeping it at the revs he was at. There's a power band for every vehicle that gives you that boost, the GT was clearly capable of having that band extend past 7k.
Everytime when I watch this I really want to be a racedriver!
