try using a good quality wide paint brush with the soapy water, for getting into all the small nooks and crannies like engine fins, etc. that a sponge can't reach. Makes for a quick and thorough cleaning process. I also use an electric leaf blower to blow out all water from the bike.

I always tell people to wash their vehicles by hand. Not only would you do a better job, but going over it while you do so, you might find something that needs to take care of it. I do enjoy washing my vehicles a lot.

I’ll be honest. I never really washed my motorcycles. Even my brand new ones. I should have, but rarely did. I didn’t drive a car, so I was always on it. In the rain, snow, all kinds of weather.
But when I did, I used a blower to dry. Works amazing!
    Great vid!

@darren watkin This is just my two cents worth but I don't use air compressors for drying due to the fact that they can blow oil and moisture out of the hose. They can also blow water into places it should never be like under gaskets, past o-rings or into bearings. Just food for thought. Ride safe!

    • @tomsreviews238

Use a cheap small electric leaf blower, works great and has a wider less intense air stream that gently dries the bike.

Mr. Motorman, you have taught me much. Thanks. Let me return the favor. Get a bottle of F11 Top Coat. After you do everything you just did in this video, lightly spray a mist of F11 on everything. Wait about a minute or so then wipe down the body and glass with a dry cloth, but let dry on its own on the motor and metal. You will have people asking you for weeks if you just bought that bike.

Depends on the paint condittion, what you do is a beautiful job! If a paint job is oxidized and needs a lot of attention, i go over it with green can of Dupont no.7 cleaner, then right over that with Carnuba wax. With that base down, do your bike just like on this video. Zip wax, by itself doesnt really do a whole lot, but add a teaspoon of Carnuba to that mixture, and the chemicals in Zip Wax will liquify the Carnuba and make it a lot easier to put on. Carnuba is the best water repellant . Zip wax has very little of it. Just enough to legally say it has it. By adding a teaspoon of Carnuba to what it already has, improves it 900%.

I've worked out a cleaning procedure that not only works incredibly well but it's fast and easy - easier than this method. I first rinse the bike off with plain water using an electric power washer. That's to get off any grit that could scratch the finish in later steps. Then I spray tire and wheel cleaner on the wheels and tires and brush them if necessary. Then I spray it with a foam cannon (cost $16 on Amazon) using Chemical Guy's foam stuff (also on Amazon.) The foam is so thick that it looks like a frosted cake! Then I quickly rub down everything with one of those washing mits with hundreds of little tube-like things. A plain water rinse is next. The next step is the amazing part. I spray the bike with Formula 4 (available online from the manufacturer). I dilute it 1:10 and just spray it on with a pump spray bottle. I let that sit for minute or so and then rinse it off. (This is the stuff that is used in commercial car washes.) Formula 4 eliminates all the water spots. It really is amazing and you can see it demonstrated on YT.
That's all that's needed. However, when I really want a perfect job, I chamois the bike dry. For normal cleanings, I don't remove the my hard saddle bags or windshield but I do when I'm feeling fanatic. With the Formula 4, it's really not necessary.
Lastly, I recently started using Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wax. The first time you use it, you spray it on, let it sit for a couple minutes and wipe it off. After that, you just spray it on, let it sit for a couple minutes and rinse it off. Incredible stuff! But when I went to order more of it on Amazon two days ago, the price just about doubled from all sellers while I was online! But Walmart had it for about half the price Amazon was then selling it for. I have no idea why every single seller on Amazon raised the price A LOT all at the same time. So shop around.
My cleaning method takes about 15 - 20 minutes and the bike is immaculate and I can see myself in the paint and chrome. The critical keys to this are - 1) Use a pressure washer. I just have an electric one. I can't believe how it makes the process so much better and faster, and - 2) Use Formula 4. It's amazing!

I rode to a small town west of where I live the other day. 10 minutes before I arrived in that town, it rained. The weather man never gave it a chance to rain that day. I parked the bike and went into a restaurant in town. 2 hours later, it was still raining. I checked the radar and it showed rain across most of the state. The worst part was, that small town had some chert pits (dirt/clay and rock). The trucks had been coming in and out of those pits for the whole 2 hours I was in the restaurant. By the time I got home, my Limited looked like I had been in a dirt bike race. That was the worst my bike has looked since I’ve owned it.

My own little trick for, "blacks". First, none of the black restore products work worth a damn! I use the Turtle Wax spray protectant. My Indian Scout has a lot of black on the engine and a lot of crevices for dust to collect in. I use a soft 1" paint brush to get the dust out of the cracks and crevices. Then, I spray the Turtle Wax protectant on another brush and brush it on! Just a nice, thin coat so it doesn't attract more dust. I use it for all the black plastic parts, radiator hose, etc. It makes my bike look showroom new!

    Thanks Much

Reaper Ronin dilute it for it will strip wax full strength and it ain't cheap so diluted it lasts much longer.

Jerry excellent process, I have used a similar process using turtle wax and Meguiars products. The secret is the leaf blower trick it allows you to get the water out of all the odd areas of the bike. I also prefer the the bike raised on a jack, huge for cleaning spoked wheels. For Black bikes when you need a real wax on it the Turtle Wax Jet Black finish Kit is the way to go!. My ride is and 2007 and every is amazed on how great ti looks after 60K miles!

  • @KipBurbank1

My secret (not anymore) is a de-ionized water supply. My system is only for car/motorcycle washing at my house, not watering lawn or plants etc. , de ionized water can’t leave spots. The filters are big (3, four feet tall canisters) and expensive. Culligan charged me $1500, used. Then I use a gas leaf blower to shed the water in the can’t-reach spots. ....Then my detailing spray. The hitch with the DI water is cost and the media in the filters last about 1000 gallons. That’s not a lot. To redeliver new media filters it’s $450 a pop. New filters will yield zero ppm of contaminants.

Thank you John Cavar! It was one of those storms that you can't believe erupted around you and manage to come out the other side safe. The weather channel said it was a mini-tornado, I believe it! Never have I ever ridden through such a storm. There was no where to pull over, a transformer blew up and I saw the blue ball of fire travel through the power lines as I was riding under those lines. The winds were 50 to 60 mph gusts, with the rain coming in sideways....The power of prayer and skills got me home in one piece.
