    I just found your channel and I've been binge watching a a lot of your videos. I fish for crappie, yellow bass, perch and walleye. A lot of the patterns that I see could be modified for spring and fall walleye. I don't do any tying (yet), but I'm very inspired to give it a try...I'm already getting a list together of the supplies. Keep up the great videos.

      Thank you Todd!!! I'll admit I'm out of my element when it comes to walleye. The only jigs I tie to target walleye specifically were done with input from my friend that avidly pursues them. If you decide to jump in and give it a shot please don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it, I'll gladly offer any assistance I can.

    Great looking jig. Simple colors easy to tie. I bought a Griffin Odyssey spider vice and a good vice sure makes it easier tieing.

    Ok buddy....I just ordered basically everything to get into tying bass fishing jigs. I have a very cheap vise that I messed with yesterday and said nope...ordered the one like you use. I did skimp on what I could for initial trial and error. Love to bend your ear more about this hobby one day. This winter is planned for casting lead....have to build my reloading/bait making table first.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Markisuncfan, that is awesome!!!! I learned to tie on a cheap 2A vise and used it for years. Had I known how much better my tying could get by getting a better vise I would have got one from the beginning. There is no problem with being frugal, you don't need expensive bobbins or things like that when starting out. Once you start doing it and find you like it, well then there is plenty of time to upgrade. I will say this, if you like it and want to get better tools, start scissors, they will make tying a lot easier as well. As for right now just get use to tying and remember that I'm here to help. My email is smalljaw67@gmail.com and you can contact me if you need help, good luck on the new hobby!!!

    SJ I tie one similar to this for sauger. The only difference is I b use a 1.25 ounce head and then I incorporate a stinger hook. I b have to use the heavier weight because of current. The stinger hook is used for short strikes and also to pin a toughy minnow to the main hook. Same exact color pattern though. As you stated this color pattern works really well.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex, I've tied them for my friend with a small stinger treble hook that he pins to a minnow. This is one he wanted to use for snap jigging so it was made with a thinner, more minnow like profile. I made quite a few on different heads with different hooks and this one was the winner. I hope it continues to work well.

    • @alexrawleigh3167
      @alexrawleigh3167 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sure it will continue to work well. On a side note I was looking back through some of your videos and I remember discussing your pro smallmouth jig. You do have a a video that you call stealth. I know you said you didn't think you had a color called stealth but you do. I really like that pattern because you use some silicon at the end that looks like it is clear and has some blue flake in it. Really great looking pattern. As many videos as you ha e shared with us I can see where you might forget about one you shared with us. I wanted to ask you a question about making eyes for your crayfish patterns. I have been playing around with making my own eyes for crayfish patterns. I use 50 lb clear cheap line and what I do is cut a piece about 2 inches and then I heat the ends up with a lighter until two round balls form at the ends. I then paint the ends with black paint. It really makes realistic eyes for crayfish patterns. I really don't think it matters to the fish bit it really looks realistic. I am sure you already know about this. I have tied some real small jigs for shellcracker and I use smaller diameter line when making the eyes. I especially like using the eyes when I make a grass shrimp jig. I make these in 1/64 and 1/80 ounce. I have had great success on these as well. Thanks for sharing another fantastic pattern. Oh by the way I finally finished my silicon purchases. I have enough to last me a lifetime now! I know one thing it doesn't take long before you get a lot of money invested in them. I am set now for retirement as far as tying jigs are concerned.

    Nice looking jig, I don't fish for walleye but I fish a damiki rig in winter for smallies, I use that same head with a minnow style bait, I bet this would work good for that. Gonna tie a few, let you know how it works out. Thanks again for sharing, really appreciate what you do.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Paul!!! I know of the Damiki rig, I had a friend that fished Cherokee lake. He would always ask me to make him 3/8oz minnow heads with a 1/0 to rig up a 3" Damiki Armor Shad. That was a few years ago before everyone else heard about that deal. I do like this freestyle head though because it balances perfect and it was actually made for that rig. You out to try using bucktail instead of the plastic and see how it turns out, I'd love to know if it works for you!!!

    Obviously here in Australia there is no Walleye or Smallmouth... However I have been tying that exact recipe for quite a while now... my only difference is I do not add the Krystal flash lateral lines instead I tie in white U.V. polar chenille for flash around the neck...By the way in the freshwater over here it smashes bass, redfin and cod...regards B.J.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      B.J., it obviously works for other species but I've only ever caught walleye and smallmouth with it. It does look good in the water so I don't see why other fish wouldn't eat it.

    Very nice sj. That black over white pattern has been a staple for deep water walleye here but tied on a flat head jig. I think black over purple has gained favor in recent years. Whether fished with a snap crackle or pop I couldn't tell ya ;o) Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you Joe!!! That is funny you mentioned those colors. The other patterns I tie like this for walleye are black and white, and black and purple!! I don't fish for walleye much and only with my friend but I know that I do like the snap jigging bucktails technique, that is a lot of fun.

      @@smalljaw I made the rice crispy joke because I really don't know what "snap" jigging is. :o/ I think I saw them do it with Jigging Raps on a Lindner fishing show. 99% of my fishing is from shore on the lake or a river, so jigs make up most of my baits. Less $$.$$ loss compared to a lure xo( Heck, I may be doing a technique and not know it has a name. I do know I learn good stuff on this channel... thanks :o)

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joeduca8582 Joe, when you saw Al Lindner working the jigging rap for walleye you saw snap jigging. It is the same technique only done with bucktail jigs rather than a jigging rap.
