    That's a beauty smalljaw! The proportions are perfect. Sometimes if you flatten the hackle stem with pliers they won't roll because they're round and you're tying them to a round surface. But you got it done with no "bleeps"! ;o) Thanks for all the great videos, you really inspire me!

      Thanks Joe, I appreciate all the support!!!! You are right, much easier to tie if you flatten the stem. I never thought about doing that until recently when I saw another guy doing it. Even old dogs can learn a new trick every once in awhile!!!!!

    Awesome pattern here. Have you ever tried to "v" the feathers outward? That would give the feathers some breathing action that might get a couple of more bites. Thanks again

      @smalljaw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Hank!! The reason I don't spread the feathers out is because I want the profile to be more baitfish than craw. By having the feathers close together in the water it will have more of a fish tail look and action when reeled slowly over the bottom.

      @@smalljaw yes Sir the profile is very important indeed.

    Thanks for sharing. Have you ever used moose hair for tieing

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can say that is one that I never tried and probably never will. The reason is that I have deer body and belly hair that serves a similar purpose.

    What do use to take cement off your fingers?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dawn dish soap and a Scotch-Brite sponge.

    What I really liked about this pattern is that you tied the hackle feathers in outside of the bucktail. Most people tie the hackle feathers in first @ the bend of the hook, removing the possibility of putting a plastic tail on the hook. I do like to put either gulp minnow or piece of a gulp worm on the hook, short piece for more action & scent...Does seem to be the difference when it's slow.. Another awesome pattern

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Don Butcher Thanks for the kind words!!! You are 100% correct, the reason the hackle is tied to the outside is to let it move a little more freely but it also doesn't crown the hook shank so you can add a trailer allowing it to be a more versatile jig.

      On the jig in this video I used a Griffin Odyssey Spider vise. I currently use a Griffin Montana Mongoose.

    could you take the hackle an wrap it around the threads to cover up the thread or is it to firm?

  • @hillbillybassfisherman8181
    @hillbillybassfisherman8181 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I seen some you say turn the feathers outward these or tie with hands in what is the difference?

    • @HankSnowgrandslamfishing
      @HankSnowgrandslamfishing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It relates to the action and profile of the jig, Having the feathers outward in a "v" would give the jig a little more action which would help when swimming this jig. However tied the way it is here will give some feather action as well but gives it a longer profile. Either way is good it comes down to personal preference. This Jig as demonstrated here is a killer pattern.

    What do you use for a trailer on that jig?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff, this is a small jig that is intended to be used by itself. The hackle is tied in to give it some extra action and a larger profile.

  • @reverndidahospud1584
    @reverndidahospud1584 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why don't you just press the feather against the hook to keep it from sliding/shifting????

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you push the feather against the hook it is still going to shift and it could possibly ruin the action of the jig in the water by ending up to close to the hook shank.

    Very nice pattern there. I like to V my feathers out after I tie in the buck tail. Also I would add a hackle wrap to the end to add some more bulk and give it a bit more flow. I like the flash you added and might start incorporating that into my future jigs. Also have a question do you drop shot at all and if so have you tried using a fly instead of a worm in your drop shot? Thanks again for sharing and catch a sack full.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you the compliment and the tip on how you do it, I will definitely try that!!!! As for your question, I do drop shot and while I never used a fly as the bait I have used small finesse jigs and hair jigs in place of the weight.

    How do you fish this

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fish this with a slow swim close to the bottom, in that color it represents a sculpin or darter minnow. The feathers provide profile and action so a trailer isn't needed for this one.
