I love how these fish aren’t aggressive to humans!
The work that you guys do to keep these fish alive for many more years! It’s fascinating
I remember watching an episode of river monsters where Jeremy Wade emphasised the importance of saving them as well. Also it turns out the alligator gar may be massively important with dealing with an a truly devastating invasive species. It turns out the alligator gar has a real liking for snakeheads.

My dad is a marine biologist who works at FIU. I lived and worked with the team there for a few years and I can assure you that every single one of them loves fish and aquatic life with a passion and a drive for conservation that has gone unmatched. Unfortunately, not many other people realize the importance of aquatic life ecosystems, but that doesn't stop them from researching and exploring ways to help our fishy friends. I'm extremely familiar with the sonar machine y'all are using there, too - one of the lovely humans I had the pleasure and honor of assisting and watching work was a sonar specialist who creates systems and machines, including building a drone controlled by a PS4 controller, to identify and count the fishes below.
I nearly stepped on a three footer in the red river of Texas and its escape from me nearly soaked me completely. They're not dangerous, they are a beautiful and vital part of our ecosystem that needs appreciation and respect!
They are so remarkably calm about being held right at the water where they could've just thrashed their way out of his hands and be free.
Not when theyre small lol
@@benpadrick6861 I suppose that makes sense XD
@@rahmanhakim1 what really happens is a combination of the fish calming down and being worn out from trying to escape the net. Like many cold blooded animals, it takes them a while to recover after prolonged exertion.
@@Ryodraco great explanation, thanks for the information 😄

Ive always been scared of the alligator gar, but now after watching this video I can truly say this is a beautiful species! And im not scared anymore of this fish.
I know that nose bump at the end just tickled my heart, and I don’t usually feel like that with fish lol
They are very misunderstood animals very prehistoric but extremely docile they’ll fail around when caught and never handle them from the back their scales are reversed so you can get sliced and never go near the mouth but they’ll be really chill after a little while
That's wonderful! That's the point of this video, education.
Thank you Coyote, for bringing to attention the importance of that fish. Alligator Gar are hands down my favorite fish, maybe animal, and regulations definately need to be put in place to protect them. I wish you well. What a beautiful girl she was.
Right there with u protect the gars
any other fish fights for its life when its caught but these magnificent beasts are so relaxed and just looking to live its life by itself. what an absolute legend. these fish are amazing pieces of history. happy to be a neighbor of an absolute legend itself being "Coyote". You sir are a movement in itself.
That Alligator Gar at the end is literally the definition of "gentle giant" honestly if this isn't a fish worthy of being called a legend among fish,I don't know what is 👏
Well said sir
I absolutely agree, their so gentle and deserve more respect.
I know! That nose bump at the end tickled my heart., and I don’t usually feel like that for fish ~
I legit got misty eyed when Max nose-bumped that gar... That is the face of true love and a genuine conservationist!

That fish is SO chill and calm. If for an instant it wanted to heck off and get away, it would. It wouldn't need to even try. It's just like "okay, whatever dude."
Thats how dodo birds were and thats pretty much what made them extinct, not having a natural self defense mechanism isnt a good thing.
I first came to know about gar through Jeremy Wade. I have greatly enjoyed your videos and the story of the gar breaks my heart as well. I truly hope that they can be truly seen, respected abd one day bounce back. Thank you.
He is right: River Monsters is the best show of all time

it puts me almost on tears to see how excited these grown up men are to see a big fish. That is just how much Coyote and the Gar guys love what they do.
I thought so too.
I love how they're able to appreciate the true beauty of a fish, a lot of people tend to not see how gorgeous they actually are. It warms my heart
It is my most honor to be able to watch heroes like you save these live artifacts. Thank you
Coyote: now, these fish can stay out of water for a significant amount of time

I absolutely love getting one of these beasts on the end of my rod. They're massive, and fight like crazy. I always catch and release, and absolutely applaud anyone working to preserve them for future generations.
Next he’s going to go into the bite zone with the alligator gar 😂
That would be awesome!! Lol
Let's just pay quick respects to Coyote Peterson's hand after all the sting and bite zones he has entered with the wildlife-

Coyote ALWAYS manages to keep us entertained!
I'm studying to be an Ichthyologist and love this so much! I focus more on tiny fish. My current project is actually looking into a fish no one has before in hopes to protect it. But, I have caught a few Long Nosed gars. They're impossible to hold onto because they're such a powerful animal!
thank you for what you do!!! best wishes in your studies!!!
Wish you the best!
Yeah best wishes in your studies is right!
I’ll never understand why they have been called a “trash fish”, they are amazing animals.
Fishermen don't eat them so they are "trash". But I have always thought they were beautiful and I always hated finding ones that had been killed and tossed on the bank. They are such interesting fish.
Yup I love em
Trash fish is normally a saying used by greedy poeple who have no respect for the waters.
Since the idea of gar being a trashfish is they eat all the bass and are inedible.cuase poeple want more of the fish they like to catch no matter the consquences(ironically these are the same poeple often doing things like pulling bass off beds during breeding season cuase they want to catch that trophy fish for show resulting in the eggs and young getting eaten by sunfish).
No fish is a trash fish and when fishing all fish should be given respect.
Yeah they are older than dinosaurs so they are mythical and sooo rare so it’s the rarest animal in the world!
@MieN YakuZa gar aren’t rare
Thank you for your consideration and care for this amazing animal
I remember I found this channel when I was around 3-4 and now I can’t stop
I can never stop thinking about what must be going through the animals head when coyote is presenting them. They must feel like they are getting abducted by an alien, I bet none of their animal friends believe them when they return home lol
@Cancandoo hahaha
Jalen has been a great time
I think they are beautiful. I remember the first time I saw one. My dad was bow fishing ironically but not for Gar ( he's a big believer in only killing what you plan to eat. Reguardless, I'm happy to say he hasn't bow fished in 20 years). I remember being facinated by the way it looked and moved. I got a close up view a couple years ago while swimming. One let me stand only a couple feet from it in the water. The water was clear enough I could clearly identify it as a spotted gar. It was only about 18-24in long and absolute beautiful.
Ok
Cool
Yeah theyre all beautiful dinasaur❤ we are just lucky to still have this now
There's nothing wrong with bow fishing
They are delicious
I love gar, bow fishing is also super dope
River monsters is really the best show of all time!! How I know is bc I’ve gotten my mom, sister, girlfriends watch it and actually be interested/like it. And idk about y’all, but it’s pretty hard to find one women in your family to be invested in a show involving fishing, much less all of them. Great stories, great host, crazy adventures, and camera crew stuck it out even in the hardest adventures
So basically someone got accidentally bit and immediately said "yup, these are very very dangerous"
Yes
Hi
i feel like anyone would do that tho especially with the lack of knowledge
I mean they are in fact dangerous, a good bite could easily take ur hand off. They're just not aggressive.
The craziest part about this for me is not just seeing it pulled out of the water to do the research, but seeing it released back, is what gives me that epic feeling. Good work
I’ve always loved these big gar fishes. Fascinating fish. Incredibly docile. They’ll just glide right by you in creeks without seeming to pay you any attention. The ones at the nearby boat harbor have gotten accustomed to people feeding them, and are especially tame. The folks that live on houseboats there are Very protective of their gar.
Coyote, you're doing incredible things spreading the word like that, well done.
The long nosed gar's look in its eye made me wanna cry. They got scared cat eyes...
Truth. Can’t believe animals r afraid of us

Thank you Coyote for putting your hat in the ring for bringing awarness of conservation of the Alligator Gar.
I grew up in arkansas and my earliest memory of the AG was fishing a river with a 40 foot drop below when i was SUPER YOUNG. I saw a wrord fish and pointed it out to my dad who got excited (cant remember if positive or not) about it.
It wasnt until i turned 24 that i began fishing again and started be8ng interested in Marine Wildlife. I grew up around slackjawed hillbillies and hicks who would kill anything that isnt a catfish or Bass. Today i still have friends that hate gar, but its just because of years of conditioning to believe they are a dangerous species.
Gar are a keystone species. They are the pinnacle of evolution. And yet we treat them like they are after us.

i never thought I would cry over a fish, yet here I am
they arent extinct dont cry :)
the biggest fish of the river or pond is often called its guardian. sometimes some cultures refere to them as the spirits of the river
My uncle used to hang out at the shore of the slew behind my house with a rifle and shoot at the gar. He said they ate all the good fish. They're all scales and bones themselves. I dont know if he actually killed any but I used to think it was the silliest thing to see him shooting the water. They did get very big. I was told if food was plentiful, they'd grow indefinitely
Edit: i feel it's silly to defend a dead man but I can see how some could be offended by my uncle's action. He was a guy who loved the ecosystem of our small pond slew and the river across the road that would sometimes drain into the small lake. He drop net fished much like you see done here in the video for catfish and crappie in the river. Sometimes snapping turtles and gator gars would be netted up and they were always carefully cut free and released in the river. The slew being what it was would sometimes get a gar or two but if they ate too much or the water got low they weren't able to escape. Theyd eat everything they could until they ate everything and then die unable to nourish their new huge bodies. My uncle defended the gar from people who made myths that they attack people or the worse myth, that they'd actively snatch any small animal or child from the shore, which they don't. He said they'll never even bite a person on purpose. I don't know if it was wrong or right to shoot gars with guns, but he wasn't hateful towards the animal at all and respected and appreciated them for the beautiful animal they were. He told me not to hate the turtles either but he did warn me quite sure, they hate us. Turtles and beavers both have no love or tolerance for humans and are never to be bothered cause they don't want to have anything to do with us but they will defend their personal space if they feel threatened.
@@snipermonkey6779 whatever will I do
I have never met a (true) fisherman (or lady) who disrespects fish. When me and my family go, we put all the fish to use. Obviously eating, and then we use the head and gross stuff to fertilize our trees. It's actually amazing how much growth it helps tbh.

@@mustardman9178 i meant that like dinos were stronger then us i know that they would have died off.
because humans don’t just rely on their own hands to kill. we have weapons and big ol machines that animals are no match for. even if there were dinosaurs around, humans can/would be able to kill them no matter how big the dinosaur. but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter the technology and weapons we possess, just simple everyday pollution that we produce is enough.
