I’m 68 yrs old, and one thing i have learned is be careful being certain about things. However, in this case I can speak with 100% certainty that I would not work on anything out in the cold and snow and sub zero temps. If i couldn’t get it moved to the shop then it’s going to sit right where it is until spring! You are a way better man than me for doing that. Mad respect kid!! Also… enjoy your youth because all too soon it will be gone and you will be THAT guy that won’t work out in the cold!!
all the starters of the world love it when he posts a bike video and has to do 1000 attempts at kick starting.......actually i think the last kick start video i watched even ended up with the kick start lever giving up and suiciding itself in a field
The woodruff key doesn't hold the flywheel to the crank, the woodruff key is only used to locate the flywheel to it's correct position the friction between the two tapers does all the holding If the contact of the tapers on both the flywheel and the crankshaft aren't perfectly matched and seated together you will find it will probably continue to shear keys this alos happens a lot if the tapers are scored and burred from previous shears , the cure is to lap in the flywheel to crank tapers just the same as you would grind a Valve in. I use grinding compounds to obtain a good surface on both tapers then you must make sure all residue is cleaned off before fitting a new key and tighten to the specified torque, I've seen a lot of issues with folk fitting too tall a key which prevents the tapers holding and then another key shears off easily
And the tapers need to be clean and dry , the worst possible is when I've found the tapers coated with anti seize when tearing down after previous owners @@joemomma9177
I wondered what causes a woodruff key to shear other than inertia due to the sudden stopping of the flywheel as happens in a running lawnmower. You explanation explained the why very, very well.
lack of a good tight matched fit and the only thing left to stop all that momentum is the woodruff key, even a slight backfire or stutter can easily shear the key at that point I learned a long time ago that every day is a schoolday and we all need to keep learning 🙂@@danburch9989
I have had to file the top of one down before. If you don’t get the part at a dealer you never know what you are getting unless you have the old key in hand for comparison.
Joe, I have a suggestion for you. When you have a machine that won’t start as in this one build a winch mount on your trailer, winch it up on the trailer and back it in front of the garage. Unload it and you wont have to work in the cold…… Thanks for all of your great content… Good Luck.
You need to lap that flywheel back into the crank snout like you would lapping valves, and get the correct OEM woodruff key, not a HF knock off. After assembling to torque spec, you could take a brass drift and tap the flywheel in the area around the flywheel nut, to see if it will seat more, then check tight to the torque spec again.
I remember years ago having to replace a front pump automatic trans seal outside in the cold with crappy tools 160 miles from home. I feel for you Man!
45:34 I have respect...I know working on things in cold weather. Confused though. You have multiple pieces of equipment.....why didn't you tow it to your shop? One piece of advice. Woodruff keys are only there for backup to a seated flywheel to crank. Remove key and lap the flywheel as you would valves to seat surfaces. Mate two surfaces....then clean and replace key and assemble.. Also always remember....if you wanted bigger fish use bigger baited hooks...😂 keep creating.
That's what I wondered, seems like a 4x4 Quad could of towed it up the driveway. I remember as a Teenager having to replace the Transmission in my 1968 Olds Delmont 88 in my Parents Driveway in the Middle of Winter with Snow Banks as High as the Car on either side!....Good Times! 🥶🥶
He’s NOT good at this he needs to stop. I watched one video, then I had to watch another in case the first one was just a bad example. He’s just NOT even decent at this. I would escort him out of my shop.
Nothing is colder than cold coolant running down the sleeve of your jacket up into your armpit when working from below. I admire your willingness to work in that weather! Used to 'ride' snowmobiles back in the 70's - when the phrase ride for an hour fix for week was invented.
My first sled was a 1972 Lynx, then a few years after that a couple of 440 Cheetahs. I spent a lot of time in the garage working on these. Now it’s just gas , oil and grease it occasionally. I do work on my Ranger a lot but it’s from trail conditions.
You are a trooper! When I was young a remember laying on a snow covered driveway replacing my cars wheel bearing Christmas Eve....had no choice then, too old for that stuff now.
It's a pleasure watching your work. Thanks for the time taken to bring the viewer into the process and the methodical way you work through the diagnosis of problems. Your patience is exceptional. I'm newly subscribed and enjoy learning from your approach, having watched some of your back catalogue of posts. Keep up the great work, I hope it's paying off.
If that happens again you should try valve lapping compound on the crank snout to flywheel get a good tight fit if you dont know what im talking about look it up 👍
I would just leave it till the thaw... but then again, I live in Florida and after being born and living for 57 years in Oregon, I don't do cold weather anymore
Hey man, you're really an inspiration to me, you tough me alot about mechanics. I've even fixed up multiple motorbikes. since my dad has been so sick with a terminal illness he hasn't been able to teach me much and when he wasn't sick I was to young to really take any notice. Thanks 2vintage for your inspiration. Awesome videos bro ❤
A small whiff of easy start does help in extreme cold condition to avoid extended cranking 👍. Workes for me everytime 😉. Well done on fixing the fault though 😀.
One thing I learned long ago in my early days of wrenching, if it don't start don't keep cranking, its one of two things more than likely, no spark or no fuel, quick way to know is just spray some starting fluid, or WD40 into the intake then crank, if it fires you know its a fuel delivery issue, if it does not fire then its a spark issue, then you can go after the cause, just letting it crank and crank does nothing but burn up your starter and drain your battery then when you figure out the problem your battery is to weak to start it or starter is shot. Alos don't go diving into ripping things apart untill you have checked all the obvious easy to get to things first.
Now I know you probably just did this to show the rest of us up. I know you have more equipment in able to pull that thing into your heated shop. Got to love that very thick oil. The cold ain't no joke. I'm in my 60's now, so I am with the other guy
I’ve never owned a Polaris and never will, their motors and drivelines are always problematic at best and I just can’t stand their belt drive systems. I have so many die hard Polaris friends that won’t buy any other brand yet still bitch about and constantly have to spend money on their Polaris’s. I’ve got a 1987 Yamaha moto 4 and a 2001 Suzuki quad runner 500 and they just start and run and perform every time. Great vid, always enjoy your troubleshooting 👍
Your wrong on so many levels😂 your just hating😂 ive owned polaris my whole life n beat the shit out of em n they say spank me harder daddy 😂 you dont kno fuck all😂
When talking about utvs Polaris is the way to go. But in general ide rather own a Polaris than a canam everyday of the week. If you know machines and what can mechanically fail Polaris are great machines. In fact they run so long the frame and bushings will rot and fall apart before the motors blow
You can't own just one Polaris, you need at least two so you hopefully have at least one running and you can tow the other one if you have too. LOL. I have had lots of fun working on older Sportsmans. If you want just one I'd still go for a Honda. Not as flashy or sexy but built with engineering and reliability in mind.
Nice deductive work….I’m learning….I love these machines and can’t believe how much some people just abuse the hell out of them…..keep up on the maintenance and they’ll last a lifetime
Wow, Joe, you deserve a thumbs up for your commitment to getting this going after a technical snafu with the Woodford Key. Keep up the great content and keep your hands warm!
First thing when weather is like this, is put it in neutral and tow it into the garage to work on it. Something isn't right with mating surface of flywheel to crankshaft, and/or bolt was not torqued correctly.
Oh cool ! Fix up a turd and we go and use it on a trip! Love it !!! Those seat covers ,lights and engine rebuilt! Thanks for taking us along really cool! Thank you! I learn a lot too…
As stated before the key only locates the flywheel, the taper is what’s important, but also make sure that is the correct nut for the flywheel, if there is supposed to be a flange or washer on the nut it may not be holding the flywheel tight enough and that can cause it to slip on the taper
I don’t know if I would be on the ice driving on a pond, I know it’s frozen but when I was a kid I fell through ice almost drowned, does seem fun though, glad you got that thing going always enjoy watching you fix all these bikes
Man these UTVs are really cool to see them being worked on but they seem like such a pain in the ass! This one seemed mint after the rebuilding was surprised to see another video! I really liked the ice fishing ending, seeing you out this awesome thing to use. Looks like a keeper!
I couldn't do it bud! Respect for your drive! I'm north of you in Rhinelander and we had 27 below the other morning. I have a ski doo 600 rev that needs a coil. Pushing 60 now and waiting till she gets in the 30's this week.
Great video, as always a learning experience. Admire the cold and snow yard repair. Live in Minnesota not having a garage and -10°F things gave out (starter, battery, water pump, valve gaskets). You don't have a power auger? Special Guest Star 2Vinney. "that's a tiny one though." 😏😏
Initially, I thought that myself, but after seeing the backside of the flywheel, with the broken piece in, I think the previous one he had, was too tall. Possibly why it broke. I think the more shallow one, that's in it now, will be a better fit for it
I don't have a dog but I would like a Vinny someday it's so good watching him and watch him run wide open; awesome dog. Good wrenching also, it seems like you're improving.

Oh I have to say. I enjoy watching your videos you’re good and an inspiration. I’m here in Greenfield Wi. Wish we were closer to ya my boys and you would get along well.
Joe, you might invest in a propane heater just for jobs like this. You may only use it once or twice a winter, but like Montana I'm sure winters there are colder than a well digger's ass in Alaska!😂😅 Allan, back in Cut Bank, Montana
I’m only about five minutes into the video and I haven’t watch the rest. I making this comment before watching the rest. I had the same issue with my quad. It was actually the battery believe it or not it would crank over so I never would’ve thought that the battery didn’t have enough juice, but it was off by an amp in a few volts. I was getting spark, but not a hard enough spark. There was a bad cell in my battery I put a brand new factory spec battery starts perfect. Every time now prior to that I would always have to put a set of jumper cables on it to give it that extra voltage it needed.
I can't wait to see you work on a Kawasaki TERYX 4. I have a 2013 and a 2021. They don't seem to break if you take good care of them. I did blow a rear shock on the 2013 so I upgraded the Fox 2s on the 2021 to Elka Hester Edition Stage 1 shocks and passed the Fox 2 shocks to the 2013. The Elka's were less expensive for a full set then trying to replace the rear OEM shocks.
All the late model Polaris need to have the fuel pump cycled up to 7-9 times and then engine cranked in cold weather. The system does not hold pressure when fuel pump stops. I would use non alcohol fuel in winter. There is a coolant bleed screw on T-stat housing. Open when filling. Then Crack open when running.
Man you suffered over that one. I told my wife that you will be getting a hide taring from your wife for working out in those temps. I told her if she didn’t I would have. I watch all your videos on tv in my living room. I try not to miss any. Do you have a page set up or Facebook where you sell a lot of your machines. Great work. Your a wizard on those bikes. Love the fishing parts. I’m a crappie fisherman to the bone.
A 2015 and it needed a complete rebuild? I have a 2008 700XP Ranger that has never been left out at night, well taken care of, and still runs great and is in very nice condition.
Awesome video, I would like to see more of these types of videos, it gives fixing these rides context. What I mean is, you actually used the UTV for the purpose of ice fishing (in this instance) and that adds value to the video, in my "not professional at all" opinion 😂😂😂. Great content, thank you for going out in the cold and keeping at it to entertain us.
My only concern would be the quality of harbor freight keys. If it was me, i would have gotten an oem key for peace of mind. You could check the contact area of the taper by using some blueing pase to see the fitment of the two tapers.
They're just aftermarket adaptable reducer flared end muffler and tip fittings fittings into those inserts. At the end of them. For the exhaust pipe tubes inserts to fit inside and to the end of pipe tubing. where the factory muffler's attached onto it with clamps.,or snap buckles and clevis locking snap clips.
Just check the keys clearances in the shaft and flywheel, if there loose it will sheer again. I would use the factory's keys instead of the Chinese Harbor Freight ones. Always put in factory parts in.
I've always used and impact and drove the flywheel on. Then backed the nut off and hit it again 2 or 3 more times to seat the flywheel. I've had those keys break before but never since I started doing it this way. A shop owner taught me that.
Love what you do man, and your channel. My buddy is big into side x sides and these woods buggies what ever their called. He sold his Polaris cause it broke down to many times on him. He bought a can am and never had a problem since. I guess if you were gonna keep that buggy Joe you'll always have content man....lol. Love your channel man keep it goin!
It was -6F last night and I thought i was gonna freeze to death putting out corn for the deer, my man is ice fishing! I had to get out hand warmers just to watch!😂
My 2005 Kawasaki Prairie 700 had the same issue. Previous owner said it lost spark, the flywheel bolt was loose, tightened it up, got spark back, then lost it again after a few seconds of running. The flywheel woodruf key was sheared off. $4 part saved me $1,000 off the asking price.
Nice job on that fix Joe! Your ability to know what’s wrong is pretty darn good. Thank you for working out in the cold for our viewing. Glad it’s running good now
OK instead of sitting there starting wouldn’t you check to see if your get gas spark then for compression. That’s all the normal things you always check. I’ve seen you at work your a great mechanic.
Nice video, I thought that was so cool you took us fishing at the end of the video I wish I was sitting there trying that, I’m from New York never seen the process of ice fishing with that little fishing pole and making a hole , very interesting, I enjoyed that good ending to that video
I just don't understand how a bearing could fail that quick and I'm so sorry you put all that work into it brother I watched the video it seems like you did everything beautifully

Yep, that is I.
Can we all give a round of applause for that starter 👍
Old joke ... ha😒

Nice job looks like new, I hope it runs great for a long time. Great to see you were able to have some fun ice fishing at the end.
The ice fishing clip was a cool twist on the episode… cool to see what others do in the winter!
I live in Tampa Florida. I’ll never complain about the cold again after watching this episode. 🥶
Heroic effort in the snow . Dragging the compressor out was over and above the call of duty . Any idea why the woodruff key sheared ?
I agree with Kryten1021!!!!! You have to figure what sheared the key off in the first place. Lap the two tapers.
Brrrrrrrr....everything is ice cold, including the tools. Time to build a nice shop.
I've watched a lot of your videos, thought it might be woodruff key 🔑 from given info yep, keep em coming learning a lot from the vids.
love the comments lol i think we all know what the woodruff key does but it never the last time but the new one is great well done nice motor ❤
New to your channel. I really like it. I don’t know anything about mechanical issues but you make it easy to follow. Thanks man.
for starters did you ever change the knock sensor to get rid of the 65 error code? Drag it inside the garage with the snow mobile then....!
Your just like my friend Dave he would work outside on anything. If it had a motor no matter how cold it was. God rest his soul 🙏.
My only concern would be the quality of harbor freight keys. If it was me, i would have gotten an oem key for peace of mind. You could check the contact area of the taper by using some blueing pase to see the fitment of the two tapers.
I'd still be playing on the black yamaha snow mobile! The polarus would have to wait.
I enjoyed the series on this machine. And the ice fishing part was pretty cool I have never been ice fishing
What is the pack sack with the wires for when you were ice fishing?
Just check the keys clearances in the shaft and flywheel, if there loose it will sheer again. I would use the factory's keys instead of the Chinese Harbor Freight ones. Always put in factory parts in.
Good job, 👍👏👍 but a minor observation, you forgot to fit a tow ball on the back. 🤷♂️ 👍👏👍
I've always used and impact and drove the flywheel on. Then backed the nut off and hit it again 2 or 3 more times to seat the flywheel. I've had those keys break before but never since I started doing it this way. A shop owner taught me that.
Man, that was a good call I thought for sure it was gonna be ice in the carburetor. Plugging up the pilot.
This was a sweet video man! You should totally start making more fishing/hunting videos with your rigs!
Spark, Gas, electrical short or Timing! Take your pick the solution is close at hand! You'll figure it out!
Awesome job n great video especially with the fishin afterwards!!!lo!
Cold start user error. Try longer one. They usually come in 1 foot sticks where i live. Even on my lil pressure washer the key was 2x longer
Try shot of gogo juice in the intake. If it's got spark it'll come around, just super cold.
Please do a video on how you search for parts. Thank you for the ice fishing segment.
What fish were they ?
Watch the video.@@ChippyCarpenter
I did in the end mate , cheers
Nice video, I thought that was so cool you took us fishing at the end of the video I wish I was sitting there trying that, I’m from New York never seen the process of ice fishing with that little fishing pole and making a hole , very interesting, I enjoyed that good ending to that video
I just don't understand how a bearing could fail that quick and I'm so sorry you put all that work into it brother I watched the video it seems like you did everything beautifully
Can you adjust that camber on those rear wheels?
