The problem with Hard Corp is they made it insanely hard in the US to combat the rental market. It's balanced around the Japanese version which had a health bar, instead of 1 hit kills.
I learned recently that the US versions of some games were harder because of that. Which is a shame because some of these games woulda been more popular if they weren’t so damn hard. I’m convinced the original Contra wouldn’t have been nearly as popular if there was no Konami Code.
Blazing Chrome technically isn't a Contra game but it's one of the best.
It's definitely the sequel to Hard Corps that we deserved!
great game. Hard as nails tough. I gave up.
Have you checked out "Super Cyborg" on the Switch? It's very much influenced by NES and Super C and I don't know if anyone even knows about the game. But, it is really cool indie game.
@@ArjanSnijderNot easy but nothing crazy. I find Super Cyborg far harder.
@@aryudsoh True. I'm a little bit stuck on blazing chrome. Love the game. But i'm at that certain age where grandpas cheatsheat wouldn't bother either :p.
Great vid. Surprised there's so few ranking videos of this series
Thank you for another amazing video!
I watched from start to finish. I have only played Contra 4 on my DS when I was very young. Your video made me wanna try this series.
Always love your vids! 😊
Shattered Soldier is my favorite. It was fun discovering strategies on beating the bosses . The hardest part was S ranking the stages. The intro goes hard.
Play the JP version of Contra Hard Corps. It corrects the unballanced difficulty. You already have it on the Contra collection.
The U.S. version of Contra Hard Corps is tough but it's a fair challenge even if you're a skilled Contra player.
Hamtaro 😊
Out of all the games, I actually played Hard Corps first (in its European and Australian form called Probotector), and absolutely loved it. Probotector was different in that all the human player characters were replaced with robot versions.
Probotector/Hard Corps really is still my all time favourite.
I might need to check out Operation Galuga then.
Great video! Nice work.
Hard corps is my favorite
Good to see a ranking video. I love these. Can you do ranking videos on my gangster games.
Great video dude. Die hard Contra 3 player here. Used to beat the game every day before school with my brother when we were kids. Hamtarro.
Fun video! I have a soft spot for Neo Contra. Cheesy fun, and actually not as crazy hard as most Contras. And with one set of weapons, it almost feels like a Diablo. Great list and long overdue. Shattered Soldier, hmm. I had it and really tried to love it but it was just too hard for me, and a lot of reviewers found it dull as well. Might pick it up again, thanks to your video. Hard Corps is the boss for me! Just a perfect Contra experience and one of the best games on the Genesis.
Super C on nes has a cheat code, it isnt the famous konami code but there is one, it doesnt give you 30 lives i think its only 10.
Yes, it's ten lives; the Japanese version it was 30. Fortunately there is a romhack that can be patched and applied that restores the NES version to 30 lives, so you can have the best of both worlds.
Don’t forget the famous Konami code; to refresh your memory: up,up,down, down, left, right, left, right,B,A,Start.
Yeah dude, it's as sacred as Mortal Kombat's blood code "ABACABB" on the Genesis. A mandatory knowledge check for us gamers.
Good video great job!
Your statement about Super C, that it was developed in "less than a year" after the original Contra ist slightly misleading. Yes: The Arcade version of Super C was made after one year. But the NES/Famicom versions were made in early 1988 and early 1990, which is a difference of two years. And the NES/Famicom versions are both far superior than the arcade one, with better graphics and whole new areas. This is especially the case for Super C: The playtime of the NES version is twice as high compared to the Arcade original ^^
Hamtaro.
This was a really interesting video. I never even knew there were other 3D Contra games outside of Neo Contra.
51:30 what emulator or frontend are you using ?
That looks.like the save states in the contra collection on console.
@@theblighter I'll check it. Thank you
Games like Blazing Chrome and Super Cyborg on the Switch are great indie games and are definitely worth playing if you love 2D Contra.
You said in the Galuga segment you wanted a Contra game to feel like Commando - man why can't we get a new Commando game (and I'm talking about the arcade Commando game) or a new Mercs game. Could you imagine a 202x version of either of those rebooted with just action action action like this made by Wayforward let's say? Galuga was great and super fun, until I got to level 4 and the game started kicking my ass lol that's when I started playing the other mode(s). It's really a good, modern, great looking Contra. As for the rest of the list, I'd agree with every single game you ranked, except for switching Contra III and Hard Corps. I was a Genesis guy back then so I enjoyed Hard Corps more than Contra III simply because I had access to Hard Corps way more than Contra III (my best friend had the SNES). And back then, I was able to deal with these sorts of difficult games, not like now where I am nearly 50 and can barely play idle games :D
nice video, let's go contra3!!!
I agree with the final thoughts on hard corps, its difficulty comes with too much memorization, in Contra3 there are more chances to react.
side note Contra3 japanese version have 30lives code in case you want to try it like that
I would put Shattered Solider over Galuga and Hard Corps below those 2. Also Neo Contra a bit higher, but is hard as there are plenty good classic experience contras.
Enjoy the nuggets!
OMG Hard Corps, thank god for the rewind feature and save states of the collection/sega mini. I want to play the new one, thank god Contra games ain't expensive on their original consoles.
I don't understand your ranking - especially placing Contra Galuga on third place. And I don't understand it because I have another opinion (I haven't played Galuga yet), but because you sound far less enthusiastic. You rave about Contra 4 and Shattered Soldiers, but about Contra Galuga you sound very rational. That it's goot but not very revolutionary. Would I have just heard your opinion on every game and not seeing the ranking, I would haves guessed you placed Galuga somewhere between Super C and the original Contra...
Contra isn’t as niche as Hamtaro, but it deserves more love for sure
With neo and shatter soilder you have to kill every enemy and destroy every breakable object without dying to get the real ending.
I never played hard corp. I have to check it out.
Definietily the best run n gun series of all time, even though gun star heroes is the best run n gun game of all time but that never became a series unfortunetily. contra did, so that automatically puts it at no.1 followed by metal slug series.
Shotgun in shattered soldier is the spread shot, spread shot is a shotgun in all contra games imo
Great video! Could you also make ranking videos on the following franchises?

@@TotallyTubularJonathan You didn't cover Call Of The Mountain, did you? Or am I mistaken? Well, Gauntlet and Trine are the ones I'd wish to see the most. They would be very fitting for this channel.
Hamtaro, keep up the good work
my fave contra game is always super C .so yeayh i love contra just the way it is like operation c
I feel you should have included the Arcade games in this list.
Very good video. You convinced me to put in a preorder with Limited Run for Operation Galuga. Hamtaro.
Hope you enjoy it when you get it in 2 years!
@@TotallyTubularJonathanThat's no joke. I waited so long for the contra collection that, by the time it arrived, I couldn't even remember ordering it. Galuga will be a nice surprise for the future me who forgot about it LOL
Hamtaro. Sad that you skipped Contra Returns. Even though it's a mobile game, a lot of work was put into it and I think it's earned a place.
Then again, I love all Contra games. Even the ones people think are bad like Legacy Of War, which has so much atmosphere and great music. I even like Rogue Corps a lot after I learned how the upgrade system works
Returns is a mobile game that plays like a mobile game, it’s fun for an hour and then after that there’s no reason to play it anymore.
I think hard corps is better than 3, the branching paths give it alot more interesting play time, once you play through 3 once you have seen everything it has to offer, there is 1 extra boss fight on hard mode but that's it, hard corps is superior in my opnion
Contra III Level 3 is pure awesomeness ❤
I haven't played any of them past the 360/ps3 era. But i remembered most of the 3D ones being horrible. Now i usually don't go eith the flow. I loved DMC 2..i think it's better then part 1. But i remembered the 3D ones being just bad. If felt like they just didn't care. Just wanted to put the band name on it & pass it out for a quick buck. It's about having heart. You can tell the difference easily.
I get the difficulty complaint of Hard Corps but man, the gameplay, graphics, music, branching paths, multiple characters with unique weapons just blows away any other Contra with all that content! Maybe I'm biased because I've been playing the shit out of Hard Corps lately finishing 3 of the paths and working on the last 3. Contra 3 is great for sure but really only about 1/5 of content of Hard Corps. 3 also is a total bitch to get the "real ending on hard mode.
Super c is my number 1
Think hamtaro had as much chest hair as a 12 year old?
1 contra shattered soldiers
2 contra opération galluda
3 contra hard corps
4 contra 3
Contra Hard Corps is my favorite.
I guess there were 15 of these huh? lol
The Alien Wars will always be my favorite! #Hamtar
You wanna play a balls hard Genesis game? Play Undead Line. You might think Hard Corps is easy by comparison.
Contra force wasn't originally a contra game
For me :
1. Contra hard corps sega
2. Contra 3
3. Contra 4 DS
Operation Galuga this high? This game is a mediocre entry, bad graphics, poor level design, bad weapon balancing... It is quite an embarassing showing for a 2024 game that competes with much older titles. If you are looking for a "modern" Contra then you've got Uprising, and if you want a 3D Contra then Shattered Soldier is the pick. As for Contra Hard Corps on Genesis, you can try the Japanese version if it is too difficult. It's got hits points so you can get hit three times before dying, that makes it a much less frustrating experience.
Guilty gear with guns is not Contra. Even though it suppose to be a prequel to Contra it’s definitely not a coincidence it didn’t bear the name. It didn’t sale well either so don’t knock anyone’s preference in which Contra they like most or what tier that put it in because the same can be said about whichever one is your favorite. Real Contra fans wanted a return to form, a return to its roots. Contra O.G did exactly that. It won’t win a beauty contest but it is a great game Contra game or shall I say reimagining of the first to Contra games. The graphics are not that bad because the 3D graphics or 2.5D graphics looks better than Uprisings. Uprising character animations sprites look good but the 2.5 or 3D models have aged. Operation O.G is for the fans of the Contra 1-4 games. Contra 4 is better than Uprising. Uprising felt exactly what it was, a spin off. It could have been its own game without even being connected to Contra.
Uprising isn’t that great either, it tries to be a metal slug with arc sys typical anime sprites and it fails pretty hard. Its saving grace is it has online play something operation galuga lacks, but galuga has more levels, 4 player coop, a mission mode similar to contra 4 and actually feels like a contra game.
Fun fact about Contra 3, it was the first Contra game I played, so seeing it at the top was a good decision.
Also, Hamtaro.
hard corps wasn't that difficult
i could beat it as a kid, and i'm not that good
awesome game though, great soundtrack
no dos version of contra the good one with pink and white hilariously bad.
Lol keeping it to one version! Otherwise we’d have that ridiculous version, the arcade version, probotector etc etc
God damn bro I instaclicked on this one just to hear that sweet mumble about rogue corps. I must say though I got it for 1.99 from 40 euros on the switch and even though it was probably the worst isometric twin stick shooter I played in terms of design I actually enjoyed it a little bit and even finished it, no way in hell I am ever going to touch it again though.
haha yeah it sucks!
C the contra adventure is actually a really good game I don't understand the hate
hard corp first :P
Oooof. You have the first 2 (NES) games kind of low. They'd be my top 2. Also, am I the only Contra fan would doesn't care for Hard Corps Uprising? It comes off just like Contra Force where it was a different game with similarities so they just slapped the name on it, or at least sort of since it's the only one without the actual word Contra (or the letter C like Super C) in it.

I played Contra Force for the first time in 2003 on an emulator. I found a rom site with a lot of chinese bootleg games and I thought it was one of them, both before I downloaded and after I played it. "I know there's only two NES Contra games, and there's no way that Konami made such a low quality title". It was in 2007 when I played Contra 4 that I learned that it was a real game, it was listed in the museum screen. "Wait... that was real?".

After having played most of the series Contra Hard Corps is still my favorite. Its possible that i have slight bias toward it since i grew up with it on Sega Genesis.
However it is still a nonstop thrillride that is tough as nails "especially the U.S version".
My favorite? Original NES Contra for sure. Hard Corps was awesome, not sure if I ever completed the medium path or not. Definitely did not complete the hard path. Not sure if I ever got to the end of Alien Wars. It's definitely a hard one.
I really enjoyed Galuga. It felt really great to play, and the upgrade system in story mode is a great way to learn the game and get good. My biggest complaint, though, is that it's way too long. It's fine for story mode, but if you're wanting to play NES style and go arcade mode...brother this ain't that kind of game. You got 30-45 minutes TOPS for a good arcade shooter. Galuga is just far too long for that. I could run all the way through original Contra in like 13 minutes. That's two stages of Galuga, and that's if you're pushing the entire time.
All that said though, it's still a great game and I hope they add some stuff to it. It's got a great foundation for tons of fun, the fundamentals are all there and work really well.
Contra 4 is the best Contra game, it is too bad it is stuck on the DS.
I'm glad you got rid of the non Cannon contra games first and then went to the official ones
cONTRA 4 IS SO GOOD
It's novel that the wii contra is sprite based. Shame that the sprites are extremely ugly. I don't like how it looks at all
