What can also be done is to create an account in Ultimaker, log in to Cura, and use the option "Cura backups"; This option saves all the configuration of the Cura (machines and profiles) so that in the event that something happens with the computer, for example, the Cura is installed again, the session is started and the complete configuration (machines and profiles) can be restored. This option given by the Cura is very useful. Thanks for your videos, CHEP!! :D

Since this is not the first Cura update in the last year that destroys profiles I get the impression that the local settings import gets less and less tested recently. I hope that using the online backup does not become the only way to safely update in the future.

@@MetalheadAndNerd If someone could share some logs, we could have a look at what is going wrong. But the changes that we made in 4.12.1 don't come anywhere near the profiles (we updated a library for the arranging and did a fix in the engine).
It also doesn't seem to affect everyone, so it's a bit of a mystery.

Hi Chuck; Sorry to hear you had upgrade problems. I waited for the dot release (which came out quickly so; there was an issue, maybe the one you ran into) and didn't have any problems. I learned from updating to 4.09 to NOT let the installer remove installed profiles (just tick or untick the box when it pops up). It looked like a different download/installer that you used but that could be because you are on Apple (I'm running Windows 10 on a laptop). I am grateful you persevered and also created/updated profiles for 4.12. Thanks for all your efforts and contributions to our 3D printing endeavors!

Like other commenters, I am using Windows 10, I did not lose anything by upgrading to 4.12.1. Oddly, Cura did not prompt me to update. I don't believe you mentioned it, but another improvement in Cura is the printing of sides of objects should be smoother and less likely to show ringing. I have a print started that I sliced with 4.12.1 and I can already see the top surface of a raft looks smoother than I have ever seen before, so I recommend upgrading.

An even easier solution: Extensions -> Cura backups -> Manage backups.
Simply create a backup of the older version and then restore it in the new one. After restarting Cura, all your profiles are back again! It can even automatically create a new backup every day (so the first time you start it every day it will create a new backup). You can store 5 complete "checkpoints" like that.

In linux, all machine settings and profiles are stored under ~/.local/share/cura/ followed by the version number.
I suspect it's the same for MacOS as that one is a *nix based OS as well. Although a lot more locked down.
Keep in mind that names that start with a dot (.local in the case above), are hidden.

That might be a bit extreme, but definitely worth it if you have a tricky project with settings different that just using your default profile. It has been a very handy practice.

Cura comes with eSun PLA+ material profiles, but if you try to use them, there are no profiles! Cura says it is incompatible with the printer.
So what many of us do is take the eSun PLA+, duplicate them, and change the material type to PLA.

  • @MitsumaYT

There is an easier way, in c, users, yourname, appdata, roaming, cura (YT comments seem to not like file paths) are all your past settings and profiles stored, including profiles, scripts etc.
Just copy the contents of the 411 folder to the 412 folder and everything is back to normal.

@@FilamentFriday Oh, not sure how I missed that.
I think on mac its a bit split, one part is in ~/Library/Application Support/cura/ and some parts you should find right clicking the Cura icon, "Show package contents" and then go into contents, ressources.
I don't have a MAC but maybe you find something there.

@@MitsumaYT help -> Show config folder
Thats where all the config folders are stored. You can just copy what and get it back. The build in backup plugin stores that. I would recommend using the build in backup though, since that provides more convenience

Hi Chuck. I just added an Ender3 Pro. Are the machine settings the same as the Ender3 V1? I upgraded the pro with the same add-ons that I put on my Ender3 V1 (EZR Struder, glass bed, and Hero Me hot-end cooling duct. I printed a Chep Calibration Cube on both using the same gcode file using your Super Quality profile. The cube on the Pro version is a bit rougher than the print on the older Ender3. I've calibrated the extruder steps on both machines. Both are using the same brand PLA+, but different colors (Black, Grey). The only thing I can think of is that the nozzle on the newer machine is flawed. What do you think?

I stopped updating Cura a while ago, exactly to avoid bullshit like this. I updated a few times, but all the big flaws this program has have never been fixed, like non-functioning scaling with the mouse, glitched top layers that show up (or whatever it is) or project files that will eat up all RAM but never load! There's so many more issues with Cura that prove how incompetent the developers are, so I decided to not update anymore and it was the right decision.

don't know about the disable motor problem. but check out using either code to level your corners or upgrade your firmware to add a menu option for leveling the corners.

My advice would be: just make backups of your systems, people. Just do it, and don’t think: “Oh, I’m never going to lose data. That happens to other people!” You know what? Those other people thought the exact same thing. Just. Backup. Your. Stuff.
