  • now that I have finished my first year, I have realised that I've developed and grown a lot in that time and I wanted to make a review of my experiences
studying at oxford isn't always great and, from time to time, some unfortunate and frustrating things can occur. I wanted to be completely honest about my experiences (so far) so be ready for me to say it as it is
    here are some time stamps:
02:35 - state school vs private school
06:07 - keble college (aka the best college at oxford)
14:08 - being black at oxford
    22:30 - social life
just a reminder that Black Lives Matter and it's no longer enough to be neutral - you must be actively anti-racist

Definitely relate to feeling like your only there to fill a quota. I’m constantly convincing myself that I only got an offer from Cambridge because I’m a girl wanting to do physics. I definitely feel like a lot of people do treat me differently because I’m a girl in stem, some is good and some is bad but ultimately I just want to be like everyone else. I don’t want to be singled out because I’m the only girl in the room to me it feels like reinforcing the idea that I’m somehow different when really I’m the same. I understand that racism is worse than sexism and I’m so sorry that people don’t treat you equally because of the colour of your skin.

Science with Soph I totally get you. I’m used to being both the only black person in the room AND the only woman sometimes. Just keep at the back of your mind that you just being there is probably inspiring others to do the same.

tolu duckworth Being a woman in STEM is hard enough without being discriminated against for another reason on top of that. I’m lucky that I only have the fact I’m female against me but even still there is definitely work to be done on sexism. I hope that my channel will show other girls that they can do it (and definitely should if that’s what they want!)

I'm not going to Oxford at all but I still find these videos interesting and helpful to watch. Congrats for making through this year and I hope second year is great for you :)

I got an offer this year, I’m not even fully in yet and still the imposter syndrome is getting me already lol. Thanks for your perspective - I never really saw getting an offer and being from a state school as an achievement, more as a disadvantage I was panicking over. You’ve definitely changed my perspective!

Your description of Keble is sooo encouraging to me 😭 I want to apply for biomedical sciences this year (23fall) at keble but I’ve never physically been to Oxford myself so I’m just very uncertain when choosing colleges. I picked Keble for its accommodation and the architecture but I’m still not too sure, but after watching this I feel like Keble is the one!

I agree sm with what you said about the term BAME. All of our experiences are different and using the term just disregards e.g my experiences as a black individual.

    • @toluduckworth

Khadijah I try where I can to avoid using it, and encouraging others to do the same too!

Just for clarity on my end: BAME is the UK equivalent of BIPOC in Canada correct? (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour)

Keble sounds like a really nice college! I wish we had a pizza parlour in Durham!! That sounds so fancy!!

ThatOneCharlie I’m honestly so glad I chose Keble. Definitely a great college and lots of perks too! The pizza bar means I can have a whole pizza for a fiver and not have to wait for food in hall!

That was a wonderful assessment Tolu. Thank you for being real and honest and for highlighting both the good and the bad as that will only help students to gain real perspective and not simply the “image” one. We, as a family FULLY appreciate the micro aggressions. Oh do we ever! I cannot count the number of times people have just touched mine or my children’s hair without permission or said obnoxious things to us like, “you don’t look Black,” and worse! Back in America I already had it as well and was often mistaken for being Puerto Rican (which I would gladly take as well) simply because I didn’t meet someone else’s Expectations of who I should be or what I should identify as in my society. It becomes burdensome to the point that you just stop trying. Thankfully, my children are super resilient and just politely say, “Please leave me alone,” or “I don’t appreciate your rudeness. Please stop.”

I'm so glad that your children are so resilient! It's sad that they need to respond to ignorance at such young ages but at least they are prepared.
Thank you for enjoying my video too! I just didn't want to sugarcoat what it's like being here as I would've appreciated the same message when I was applying.
