- After discussing time signatures last week ( • What is a time signature? )
we dive into subdivisions. These are the small blocks we use within every main beat.
This video is obviously just the beginning, and there's a lot more to it. If you'd want to dive deeper, feel free to contact me at gabayyogev@gmail.com

Here's the septuplet song I've mentioned, "Digital Elephants" by Shwesmo:
• Shwesmo & Yogev Gabay ...
And here's a quintuplet one because why not. "Hamsa Beat" by Shwesmo:
• Shwesmo ft. Yogev Gaba...
Thanks again to Thomas Debelian, for showing us those cool time stretched rhythms!
Make sure you follow him on instagram @thomasantonio
And lastly, HUGE thanks to Omer Gabay, my brother, for all the tremendous production help!
Join my mailing list! I'll be sending these to you right when they're ready.

Thanks! Keep going man, your videos deserves way way more views
Awesom stuff man keep putting effort and bombing!
the way you use to make music easy to understand is awesome
8:49 absolutely love this
Important stuff! I mean, it's only my opinion but it's a discussion worth having
Porcupine Tree's "Cheating the Polygraph" has a septuplet subdivision (and a metric modulation into 5/8 taking septuplet = 16th).
The algorithm helped me find you and I'm addicted! If you're talking about Subdivisions, perhaps you could analyse some Rush! La Villa Strangiato or Cygnus X-1 would be intriguing, I'm sure!
Will listen!
Great job, Yogev! Love your videos, there is so much info in them. I'm trying to find subdivisions of 7 in songs now. There's weird stuff going on at about 3:00 in the song Language I: Intuition by The Contortionist, but not sure what the subdivisions or rhythms are on the drums. Music is so cool

My 4/4 blast beats use binary subdivisions. Pretty advanced drumming, eh?
BLAST BEATTSSSSSSSSSS
I would love to hear some blast beats in quintuplets & septuplets 😂👌
thank you
Great ! I love this channel !
I search for a long time like your channel.U deeply explain with time theory.
Can you explain Metric Modulations,Phase Shifting and Rhythmic Displacement in next episodes.
I have made two electronic tracks using septuplets:

rhythm is what defines brazilian music, we have tons of different grooves depending on the region
eloy casagrande showed some on aa drumeo video called "applying brazilian rhythm to metal"
i would suggest belo - reinventar = extremely popular pagode singer, mixing traditional drums with panderos, its very very swingy
Almost every song on Venetian Snares' "Rossz Csillag Alatt Született" ist with septuplet, but I think you already know this :)
Its actually 7/4 in 16 notes!

Thank you for a great video Yogev! Here is something I would to ask you: if you want to learn, be able to have fun, express yourself in a music genre you have not been exposed to when you were growing up in, is it possible to internalize its "feeling"? For example growing up in a western rock music environment and trying to internalize the samba swing feeling. As someone who studied music at academy, can you reliably tell if a musician is a "non-native speaker"? I would assume you have fellow musician friend from different countries who study music from all over the world like Flamenco, Samba, African, Saharan, etc. Again, thanks for the great content you share, cheers!
Yo !
You can absolutely do that, you'll just need to dedicate a HUGE amount of time and effort.
You'll basically need to surround yourself with the music and musicians you want to learn about and live it daily. that's the only way to make it happen in my opinion!
Iesous by Bloodbath & The unsquare dance by Dave Brubeck are two of 7 beats songs that I can recall without searching through my music player
Salt + Charcoal by Plini has a septuplet feel in some parts.
Checking it out!

Thank you so much! You are an amazing musician and an amazing teacher (at least a "teacher" for me). Your videos have been helping me a lot. I hope that you keep bringing up more stuffs because we really need someone to explain these crazily interesting wtf musical stuffs.🍻
Oh man thanks a lot!

I'm from Brazil and I have a question: why does he count the samba in 4/4 instead of 2/4, like we actually count here in Brazil? If someone would care to respond I would be thankfull.
I think it's just my western tendency to use 4 instead of 2.
2/4 would indeed be more culturally accurate!
So, what's the difference between a 4/4 with 3 subdivision and a 6/8?
Well mathematically, no difference at all between 4/4 with triplets and 2 bars of 6/8. But the musical context of each are different. If you're playing a slow blues, you'd most likely write it in 6/8 for example
👌🏻
"Hello there, wonderful people of the Internet!" What a difference to hearing an uninterested "What's up, guys" for the zillionth time.
Totally !
"Howdy, Internet people!" That's Beau of the Fifth Column
Sentupula it's used slynk in glitch hop
Can you beep the swearing? This video is actually great for kids, trying to watch with my daughter 👍
Oh no did I swear here?!
Ooooopppssss I was trying not to!
Wait why is 3 subdivison not 6/8?
Very nice

Jacob Collier is doing a lot of stuff w septuplets, as I’m sure you know.
I was actually hoping for a lot of time in this video to be spent on the “wtf” group.
"A samba groove"
*draws corona virus*
hahahahahahahaha
someone disliked, lol.. maybe he didnt like that u called septuplets weirdos
My kids are 5 and 7 and they behave and sound very weird... but now I know it's because they are in the WTF group.
Kids these days huh?
