- So I challenged myself and created my version of John Williams Across the Stars using only the “free” Iconica Sketch to see how well a complete piece could be realized with this library (I also used the free Novel Piano with the Scoring Piano Patch).
All in all, it's a very good library considering it comes free with every version of Cubase. Sure, there were some problems, especially when it came to repeated short notes, as there are - as far as I can hear - no round robins. Here I had to improvise with different velocity values and spiccato/staccato and marcato articulations.
The strings in particular leave something to be desired here and there, especially in legato. Here and with the repeated notes, I had to work around some obstacles to make it sound realistic. But you can still hear the limitations in the strings.
The fact that the library is not pre-panned also led to more work than I would have liked. What really impresses me, however, are the woodwinds - they sound excellent. The fact that there is an incredible number of instruments (including English horn, bass clarinet, contra bassoon, euphonium) is also really impressive.
I can definitely recommend Iconica Sketch overall. If you're new to virtual composition of classical music or film scores and want to get Cubase, this is definitely a better choice than Spitfire's BBC SO Discover.
