  • This mission throws in some task force management. A nice change-up.
    Just destroying all enemy ships is a perfectly legitimate way to win this mission. It can be rather tough, though.
    And the Meclanti mystery is solved.

    Well, there's usually a couple ways to complete any mission (with subtle changes in events/results).
    The crew's score for the mission might be affected, but I've never had a problem.

  • @TheCastellan
    @TheCastellan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have to select working with Sturek on the McClanti research when given a choice, that's how you unlock the mission. Also, you need to pick the correct dialogues with the McClanti when you encounter it, and also take down the Klingon crusier before it reachers the sun. That's how you win the McClanti mission.

    One wonders why the tractor beam strategy is never really used in the series.

      the Star Fleet universe did a lot more with how actual tactics would evolve within the technological and doctrinal context of the Star Trek universe. It's a shame that they never had a license to use the "narrative elements" like ship names and characters, only the tech and races.
      In Star Fleet Battles you indeed often could use tractor beams offensively and defensively, either to deflect missile weapons and drones, or to pin a ship in place before giving it what federation players affectionately call "the phaser hose." They also explored things like the combat uses of probe launchers, how ship classes might evolve over time, and even how a wartime economy might look in the Star Trek unvierse.

      @@HominidMachinae I'm just spit balling here of course, but I suspect the main reason tractor beams aren't used regularly in combat is
      a) Enemy targets try to keep their distance from an opposing vessel, so you'd have to risk the safety and integrity of your own ship purely for the sake of keeping it within tractor range. You're basically painting a bull's eye on your hull. A complete waste of time & shield strength, and puts your ship at unnecessary risk of being riddled with phaser fire or torpedoes because you've positioned yourself at point-blank-range for your opponent, when you could still attack your enemy from a safe distance with phasers/photons. Forget the tractor tactic; it's not the one-size-fits-all strategy you think it is.
      b) Combat situations are high-stakes, and you need your crew giving all of their attention to tactical systems - shield strength, damage control, phasers, photons, navigation, etc. It would be absurd to expect a crew member to man the tractor controls on the off-chance you can get close enough, LONG ENOUGH for them to get a lock. You are risking the destruction of your entire ship for the sake of a few easy pot shots.
      c) Tractor beams use a lot of power, and during combat you want all available power diverted to shields, weapons, and hull integrity. Using the tractor beam to hold an enemy vessel means you'll either have to sap power from weapons, hull integrity, or shields. In which case, see A above.
      d) Faster moving vessels are harder to hit. To ensure your tractor guy can get a good lock, you'll need to slow down as you pass by the ship that's barraging you with torpedoes. You've made yourself a sitting duck for the sake of a unsound battle tactic.
      I'm not saying it can't work. Let's call it the "Forester Maneuver" for lack of a better term. But like most maneuvers like this, it's only effective in a specific set of circumstances.

      True, plus the Excelsior-Class made in 2280s now into the 24th century was the first to have a transwarp drive. So far only very few refits of them are in service but different timelines, the Enterprise-B and the Lakota.

    Alshoff, I don't know if I ever even thought of that solution that you executed on this mission, especially telling the computer that if it was successful that Klingons would never die in battle again. Last time I did that mission, I destroyed it myself (I think). You learn something everyday :) Same thing goes to the mission where Kumas is arrested for treason when you convinced the Romulans to help you out. When I take on a Bertaa (Klingon Advanced Cruiser), I go for its head usually.

    I think "Captain Zora" is wearing an actual TOS film production costume; her wool gabardine jacket appears to be well-tailored compared to the other captain's uniform, and has a gold trim along the seam of the breast flap, which indicates it was meant as a flag officer's uniform, not a line officer (this gold trim is seen on uniforms worn by admirals such as Kirk, Morrow, Cartwright, etc.). That means it was probably made to be worn by one of the female Starfleet background extras from Star Trek IV (the Federation Council scenes) or VI (the Admiralty briefing scene). That's pretty interesting, considering the somewhat dodgy uniform costumes worn by Shatner and co.; they probably couldn't get a hold of the "hero" costumes worn by those actors in the films, as they had likely already been donated to Star Trek: The Experience or one of the traveling prop exhibitions (and the actors likely wouldn't have fit in them anymore; especially Shat).

    Fromt left to right:
    Excelsior-class, Miranda-class and Constitution-class
    The Sovereign had not been made at the time this game came out, I don't even know if Tng had already aired it's first episode.
    Trekkiefact: The Sovereign-class hasn't been designated as assault cruiser, it is most likely either a heavy cruiser by starfleet standart.
    The assault cruiser designation is only to determine it's role in STO.
    Starfleet is pretty loose on those terms.

    I played the entire game a few years back and enjoyed it. I finally finished at the level where Forrestor gets the Enterprise, but I never saw the mystery of the McClanti solved! The klingon ship dives into the star and causes a portion to explode and it takes out the McClanti. After that Forrestor is surrounded by Klingon ships for having violated the neutral zone. and he states expresses that he's let down Captain Kirk. Anyone know the secret of the McClanti????

    A Federation game just isn't complete unless they have an alien speaking with a British accent. A raspy, gravel voiced cigarette smoking one. I bet she's having alien cigarette withdrawal symptoms since the Federation banned smoking on it's ships after the second Khan incident. Did someone forget to tell the bad guy that you have to flip open a communicator before you can talk on it? May the Kirk force be with you.

    • @SirBroadsword
      @SirBroadsword 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that's what happens when a video game company tries to produce live-action Trek content on a shoestring and then blows most of the budget on getting Shatner, Takei, and Koenig to be in it.
      To be fair, they did a bit better with Klingon Academy, but that came at the cost of there being essentially no actual sets, whereas there were at least a few here. Virtually everything but the actors themselves (most notably Christopher Plummer as General Chang) was stripped away to the barest essentials.
