Honest interview and fierce competitor. He is the best 1500 runner right now but, as with any competition, you can be beaten if you don't execute your plan and someone else gets theirs right. He gave credit to Jake and congratulated him. A true competitor wants to win every race, no shame or cockiness in that.

Ar least it wasnt an amble for 1100 then a free for all burn up on the last lap, but actually thats quite exciting too !!! took a lot of guts, talent and hard work to take the lead at such a fast pace and not relinquish it, JI, effectively didnt battle to the line, conceded and looked back, perhaps thats why hes hacked off with his performance, am sure Jake and all the others were expending as much energy, perhaps he can learn more in defeat than victory, this interview contrasts with Josh Kerrs, just my humble opinion

I think it's easy to forget that Jakob is still only 21. He certainly has a lot to learn, both in race tactics and in humility. Here he just got beaten by the better man on the day, who ran a perfect race, and there's no shame in that.
Credit to Jake Wightman, who seems like a really nice guy and deserves everything coming his way after years of hard work.
Here's hoping that Jakob learns from the experience and comes back stronger, and I suspect that may just happen in the 5K this weekend...

As Chris Berman used to say (in USA): "That's why they play the games". You can be the fittest, fave on paper, on record, and then as Jakob said, you're caught off guard and expend too much energy working your way out of a jam, whilst someone else doesn't need to. in these types of finals you don't go running with strategy, there is no strategy to win, you just should have done what you always do, go running very hard after the first 400m, you didn't because you worried about beating Cheruhuy the Kenyan the last 200m. He was wrong and you should never underestimate any European runner

    • @TheGuyCalledX

This really is it. He won Tokyo by taking the lead on the last lap instead of letting Cheruiyot dictate a slower pace for his kick. He saw the Kenyans up at the front again, and wanted to do the same thing-- run out their kick.
He did so VERY successfully-- the Kenyans ended up finishing 6/7, but the problem is that there was another challenger with a very strong 400 time himself. When Wightman challenged him with 300m to go, Jakob didn't have the reserves he'd normally have because he went to the front too early.

He clearly has let his successes get to his head. Jakob has gone from ascending youngster to the top dog in a number of big finishes, but he has convinced himself that he is unbeatable. There are people who work just as hard as he does and can take a win from him on any day. Hopefully he will exercise humility in the future, because he clearly isn't showing it here. There has never been a top running star that is this comfortable talking to the media and giving insights into his life, so it's natural that he is very popular. Unfortunately, the same willingness will give his haters plenty to go after when stuff goes wrong or he has a bad attitude.

I have been following Jakob for years now. Why is the person asking questions making as if this was a slow race at 5:11 speaking about 3min 34/35 as fast. This was Jakes best time and a World Lead seasons best at 3min29.23. I am not sure that he understands what the finishing time was. Jakob speaks of 3Min 28 and 3Min 27 when Jacob has never run under 3Min 28. He is a typical Virgo like myself. Analysis Paralysis. He was outrun plain and simply. He is trying to speak for Jakes. He is developing a serious complex. He is rattled. He cannot accept that someone is better than him on the day. I hope he learns from this. He can be beaten. He is clearly not the best. I hope he breaks the world record during his career.

@@marksolomonify I wish he could see his inadequacy. This is all about him, not me. "He knows he is better than silver" but he is NOT. In that race he is just good enough for silver. How he speaks for the winner is just juvenile. He needs to grow up and eat that humble pie.

@@Beyond-Politics exactly. He self admittedly was surprised anyone could keep up. He ran the perfect race to break the Kenyans, who got spurted out the lead pack at the end in 6th/7th after expending too much energy fighting for the lead in the third lap. You can't just race a specific opponent in a world championship final! You might have beaten the champ, but that doesn't make you champ! There can always be someone else!

I guess all here are big fans, but I don't like this interview. To say you should have won and are better than the guy who just beat you while he ran the the fastest time of the year in the event is bad form and kind of abrasive to me. All I heard from him was: Yeah , he ran the best time of the year and beat me , but I should have done better, because no matter what happens, I am better than he is. The whole race was really only about me. "
How can you not think: "awesome, mate. Thanks for explaining what really happened in the race. Stupid us. We just thought you got beat. Now we know better.
