Just FYI GR Yaris and GR Corolla has a soft limiter in 1st/2nd so you only get full turbo boost in 3rd. Also for future FL5 owners , even with 265 wide tires it'll wheelspin in 1st-2nd on warm tires if you floor it (even with stock PS4S tires) , you will have to load the throttle progressively for best results. it is not a car built for drag racing from a standstill but from a roll , only way to combat it is to either fit stickier tires (semi slick's / R compound) or extra supporting mods like an anti lift kit and Polybush the lower torque mount with Powerflex or Whiteline and cross your fingers , but it will be extremely close in cornering capability on the limit to the GR Corolla if not better. Honda have truly engineered the Type R to carve up corners and hit circuits (from factory). Anyone that has the opportunity to get either car is extremely lucky , but both cars try and target a particular audience , yet both cars have personalities that are total opposite of one another. I think you touched on a lot of things that many people never mention and you drove these cars where they are intended to be driven. I drove both before buying a GRC because I found it more fun. I didn't like the size of the CTR and I hate the red interior. I also got heated seats and steering wheel in the GRC. And did I mention the actual hand brake? I also love the true hot hatch design of the GRC. The CTR is not a hatch at all, it's a lift back. If I wanted a more refined car there are plenty of cars to choose from, but wanting a more fun car, that can be enjoyed year round with the benefit of the AWD.
The honda just has it all, shows you dont even need AWD.....can be a track car and family car....has big ass tyres and looks legit inside and out.....plus it has way more modifying options namely spoon/mugen/prl
As good as the civic might be, front wheel drive makes me flaccid. It’s the antithesis of what driving dynamics should be. All the trickery and kit that the civic has, just mitigates what is inherently wrong with FWD.
@KN-jw7ts I'm pretty sure the greatest hot hatches on earth where front wheel drive? So in this case it seems all that will make you unflaccid is an understeeing AWD or a bmw.....they make those bmws for guys like you, enjoy it!
Oh contraire mon frere……the best hot hatches have always homologation specials, that’s just a fact. And what do the vast majority of those have…..(say it with me) AWD. And this gr is the closest thing we can get to one of those here in the states. Btw, unfortunately bmw doesn’t do it for me anymore. Last one I had was an e46 m3, which I still regret selling. I digress, it’s not some big secret that fwd is the least desirable set up for enthusiasts. I can assure you, in the real world, places that have an actual 4 seasons….this gr is not only more capable, but will be much more fun….which is paramount. But I respect your opinion (albeit, weird) in liking fwd. I guess torque/under steer can be fun?
@KN-jw7ts no no one said the corolla is irrelevant, as another guy posted....if you looking at a complete package the CTR is better, and when I speak of a hot hatch for the road then the best hot hatches are 90 percent FWD...namely Peugeot 205gti, Megane RS, GTI clubsport...EK9 type R....so you can go get your rally special corolla and then everyone is happy....maybe one day take the FL5 for a drive and tell me what torque steer is....coz I have had both the FK8 and now FL5 and there is literally none of that, but I'm over this convo, you should maybe tell the honda engineers to wake up and listen to your opinion on the car.
I'm not too impressed with the Toyota as it has a number of heat related problems if you race it. On the street it might be ok for a burst of speed every now and then. The Civic seems much more sorted out and balanced, plus it just flat out looks great. Actually the Golf R (not included here) is the all around winner by quite a large margin IMO.
I just drove the GR and never drove the type R but I find it hard to believe the civic handles or drives better. I was blown away how the carolla felt just banging those gears and the awd is amazing
Both great cars definitely. But me, GR, if your buying this type of car for fun you're not bothered about interior surely? GR is just way more special then the civic. AWD system and handling is on another level.
I don't know. Between these two cars, they feel very similar. For the most part. I've driven both and they are just fun to drive! I can go with any of those cars. There's not one that truly stands out over the other. It's really personal preference and styling. I'll stick with the GR Corolla because of its reliability and handling. As for the interior, I don't really care about it either. It's the driving experience that gets me. Like the guy said in this video, you can make the entire interior of the GR Corolla crap and I'll still buy it! And trust me when I say this, the GR Corolla is really, really fun to drive if I MUST choose between the two cars. But that's just my own personal opinion. I like the "feel" and it's like my body and the car itself, is one. You know what I mean? Like the Corolla responds to the way I want it to, like it knows how I want to handle the tight curves, and turns and when I need that extra "oomph". I don't get that with the Type R. This review video is definitely the best review I've seen so far between these two cars. Totally unbiased, real, and there are points made I've never heard of before. That's what makes this video #1 in review so far between the Type R Civic and GR Corolla.
Didn’t live the clutch engagement on the GR. Clutch and transmission on the R is next level. That said, I agree that both cars would make the perfect garage.
I’ve watched so many GRC vids. Hahaha I like the analog feel of the GR. And there’s unique appeal in the “cheap” interior, but I think it’s still pretty nice. It appeals to people that grew up in the tuner world I feel. Take a basic car-and make it a monster, not forgetting what platform you’re working with. Great video! If I had oodles of money, I’d also get the Type-R and WRX TR. hahaha
Not sure if jdm guys are aware of this but you can get a v8 camaro, mustang or challenger/charger for about the same price as a type or or maybe a bit cheaper depending on the markup that will outperform the type r in every way possible. There is no replacement for a big displacement.
Had a 24' GR and traded it in for the R after 2600 miles. Transmission in the GRC vs Type R is sandpaper vs silk. Mine felt like something was wrong with the car. If you search the gr forums there's many diff threads about trans feel related issues. Torn stock mounts on the grc and other concerning issues. Seating position and the seats are night and day. Surprised you didn't comment more about it when switching between them. One is definitely more a result of Kaizen and the other not. I wanted the grc to be the better car because I also own an ae86. There is no clear progression of the ae86 to the GRC and the entire thing comes off as an afterthought from a marketing meeting for the Gr Yaris at this point. The Honda on the other hand has shown it's progression from the City turbo, the ek9, the fk8 and now the fl5. Also Honda LogR, the new data logger in the is the final cherry on top between them. In this battle between Honda vs Toyota we see a samurai sword vs pair of tinsnips.
This body style type R looks way better than the previous one. I rather get the type r because the body looks nicer. I don't care how fast it is, if the body is ugly I don't want to drive it.
Thankfully you can disable the fake noise in the R in under 30mins by unplugging a module in the dash. Now I can actually hear the engine a bit, still doesn't sound all that great though.
yea they all sound like big vacuum cleaner lol until u get a exhaust one bad thing idk how they made integra type s sound good but ctr sound like a hoover lol
I've got a GR, but these days 300hp which used to be supercar power is just meh today. My tuned S3 which I sold and got the GR would do 4-wheel burnouts on 200TW 255 tires and low 3sec 0-60. THAT was fast and buying used it was 1/2 the cost of a new GR including all the mods... Definitely feeling some sellers remorse now though the GR has lots of grip and a manual transmission. GR for the street, Civic for the track maybe. Civic has the best interior Honda has done in a long time.
Yeah huh, that’s some conclusion without driving either of them huh? Bc a lot of ppl, including car reviewers like Doug demero absolutely choose the Corolla. If your buying solely for the “interior”, the new Mazda CX-9 is a good choice for you. Lol.
The Core has a pretty cheap interior but the Circuit is on par with the Type R. If you compare the trim level that’s in the same price bracket the pros and cons are evenly split.
Buddy, the “segment” is one of an econobox. It’s a civic and a Corolla. Lol. That’s not to say, the civic isn’t fun and all, but Give me the rally bred one any day of the week. If I want a “nice interior” I’d look elsewhere.
I've driven both and the Corolla feels fun but a little slower than the Civic. I think the GR Yaris is the one to go for. Personally from all the cars in this segment (and I've driven most) the most impressive and fun ones were the Focus RS and i30N.

In terms of Motorsports: Toyota GR is best at Rally racing. Honda Civic Type R is best at circuit racing.
You can turn the engine sound off by using individual mode. Just turn everything to R mode except for the engine sound and its the same thing as R mode but without the sound
Come on..the gr isn't in the same league as the Type R. Honda is something else..the corolla is just a hot hatch, the Civic is the ultimate hot hatch with Honda DNA, the most legendary motorsports DNA
Thanks for the review. One constructive criticism: I suggest that you get another camera, pointed out on the road. There's a lot of time spent with the camera on you, time that could show the car progressing down the road. Combined this with your commentary, and I think your reviews would be even better.
Reviewers keep saying the GR is down on torque because it has 1 less cylinder but that's not technically correct it's more because it's down on displacement a 1.6 vs 2.0 it could have been a 2.0 3 cylinder like the TFG and that would have been a different story
Civic type R drivetrain really limits further power and performance, without compromising the balance that it’s barely holding on to. GR Corolla is the way…. And I’m a Honda guy. (Btw the hood vents are real on the GR corolla, this ain’t no Supra! ahahha but thats cool too 🤣)
No offense, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. The GRC transmission has some major downfalls, and is not very strong. There is a reason why every modded GRY has a dog box or sequential.
@dogshmog I'm not mad ahaha but who said anything about the gearbox in the gr? I'm just saying the civic type r is too powerful for front wheel drive imo... It's fast and performs great but with those type of numbers, I prefer awd or rwd. Definitely awesome cars to say the least. I think differently from some people when it comes to horsepower numbers ahahaa I feel the type r has enough power right where it is and the grc could use another 80-100.... these are premium economy cars after all 🤷♂️🤙

Not sure if these would be cross shopped. Usually if you want AWD, you wouldn't consider FWD. In almost all cases AWD ruins some of the handling of a vehicle. I owned a Fiesta ST, and I liked it better than all the Miatas I drove. Some people swear by RWD, I don't. The 2 cars I have driven that have AWD and the handling isn't ruined - Porsche 911 turbo, and the GR Corolla. I would buy a GR Corolla if I had the money.
And lastly, never said the civic isnt great…….but you basically saying that awd is irrelevant Bc this ctr is set up the way it is, is absurd.
Honda looks now more grown up and mature ..❤
Ok, that intro 👏 just lower the volume of the music. I wana hear the cars! Btw the GR hood vents are functional 😊
I just drove the GR and never drove the type R but I find it hard to believe the civic handles or drives better. I was blown away how the carolla felt just banging those gears and the awd is amazing
Then you need to drive type R to understand just how good the type R is....
Thanks for sharing, both are great in unique ways.
The type R is extremely planted. Not joking it feels like a budget porche in the corners. The handling is miles better than the gr corolla
Both over priced for my poor ass
I feel you
Facts
The price is so fair
I'm with ya man..lol
Both great cars definitely. But me, GR, if your buying this type of car for fun you're not bothered about interior surely? GR is just way more special then the civic. AWD system and handling is on another level.
I agree if you want the extra room buy a BMW M340
Yeah, well said. Really just preference. Glad you liked the video and thanks for sharing!
Would love to see the Morizo go up against the FL5, in the wet, on that same mountain road.
Hard to pick..but maybe the Honda because of the space and better interior
…best comparison of these two i’ve ever seen
Well done video, and great start to the channel. In 4 mos just impressive how much it's already grown. Who owns Sleepy Garage?
Great comparison on the best hot hatches available
Thanks bro!
Didn’t live the clutch engagement on the GR. Clutch and transmission on the R is next level. That said, I agree that both cars would make the perfect garage.
I’ve watched so many GRC vids. Hahaha
I like the analog feel of the GR.
I have both 2023 gr corolla core with performance Package and 2018 type R i tink I'm a blessed man
U definitely are!
Daddy buy them for you?
This is the review I was looking for - I'm tossing up between these two...
Civic type r ❤❤ una leyenda.
Awd corolla is good but, More things= more parts broken in future. 2wd anterior honda is unbrekeable.
This body style type R looks way better than the previous one. I rather get the type r because the body looks nicer. I don't care how fast it is, if the body is ugly I don't want to drive it.
I choose Corolla for the futuristic looks
both cars are extraordinarily marked up
Thankfully you can disable the fake noise in the R in under 30mins by unplugging a module in the dash. Now I can actually hear the engine a bit, still doesn't sound all that great though.
yea they all sound like big vacuum cleaner lol until u get a exhaust one bad thing idk how they made integra type s sound good but ctr sound like a hoover lol
@@Notorious1000RR4 cylinders all sound like garbage
The power of dreams. Type R amazing❤❤❤
Also, remember for the Corolla there’s even a higher performance track trim call the MORIZO.
both fun to drive. would never swap either for any european or amercan car
only thing i dont like about the corolla is that 3 cylinder engine i feel the civic has more potential if i want to add more power
I see a lot of Type R owners in WI, it is very a good buy. don't see much GR Owners yet... but a solid car as well.
Honda looks really nice. Perhaps a direction old bmws might have evolved towards in a perfect world. I’ll take reliability.
As a former Type R owner that’s now a GRC owner you get it - the Corolla is just more fun/raw. The sounds/experience is just better.
I know I’m late to this but I got a 2024 GRC and I have never enjoyed a Vernice so much and I have a pretty extensive list of the fun 300ish hp cars!
The GR Corolla interior's a joke for the price, it so bad it's a deal breaker. As a package this comparison isn't as close as you'd make it appear.
Yeah huh, that’s some conclusion without driving either of them huh? Bc a lot of ppl, including car reviewers like Doug demero absolutely choose the Corolla. If your buying solely for the “interior”, the new Mazda CX-9 is a good choice for you. Lol.
Idk, I saw one at a car show yesterday and I went in it to see what it was like. It was very comfortable.
@@itstygerr it's worst in segment by far broski
In terms of Motorsports:
Toyota GR is best at Rally racing.
Honda Civic Type R is best at circuit racing.
I agree
You can turn the engine sound off by using individual mode. Just turn everything to R mode except for the engine sound and its the same thing as R mode but without the sound
Can't wait for the one cylinder to come out! We have a cylinder shortage these days.
Beautiful review and analysis! Lovely production as always
Preciate it!
The GRC does have a heated steering wheel in Canada. 18:57 you can see the button on the left side.
Come on..the gr isn't in the same league as the Type R. Honda is something else..the corolla is just a hot hatch, the Civic is the ultimate hot hatch with Honda DNA, the most legendary motorsports DNA
And worthless fwd 😂😂😂😂
@ryantogo8359 check how you trolling...fwd drive train that doesn't catch fire 🤣🤣🤣
You guys should try out an Elantra N
yeah soon!
Thanks for the review. One constructive criticism: I suggest that you get another camera, pointed out on the road. There's a lot of time spent with the camera on you, time that could show the car progressing down the road. Combined this with your commentary, and I think your reviews would be even better.
Thanks for the tips!
I think differently from some people when it comes to horsepower numbers ahahaa I feel the type r has enough power right where it is and the grc could use another 80-100.... these are premium economy cars after all 🤷♂️🤙
You do not know what you are talking about your a rude dumbass@@dogshmog
@@topend2282There’s video of 500hp CTR blasting down tracks and most Japanese tuners are push 400hp on their light tuned track use Type Rs. And comes to the GR corolla, it’s the same argument, however GR corolla need to lose at least 200lbs of weight. If GR Yaris exist in America The GR Yaris trumps all, but as if rn, the more playful and harsh civic type R takes my money.
@@30hours51yeah, and the civic would be wayyyy faster if it didn't have the worst type of drivetrain
Every time my choice goes to Type R. Honda- 4Ever!
Love the video! I had to do a double take when I saw your sub count, I thought you''d for sure have at least 100k+ subs. please keep at it!!!
Maybe one day! Thank u!!
They should have made the cgr with turbo 2.0L 4 cylinders and it would have been more competitive, bringing it more levelled witg the competitor.
Type R for me, but FK8 over FL5
Type R for me too, but FD2r over FK8
no good
FL5 very good
Fkg8y 😂
Love my Corolla GR Core paid 38200 plus tax.. I would love a type R however that’s 20k more(to expensive for what you get). The GR Corolla is worth what you pay for it plus it’s AWD unlike the type R.
I paid 44K for my 24 R. Msrp.
@@highpeaks6542 extremely lucky here the lowest I found is 55k. I got my Corolla GR brand new 2 miles for 38200. I happy with it is a AWD stock 300hp not complaining and it’s Toyota reliability.
Nothing beats a CTR in its category
In the "fwd pos category"?
They both great cars and they hold their value
I'm no longer considering a Japanese brand, but if I go back to one. It will be the overprice overhyped type-r
Me too lol
imo gr corolla core with performance pack is the best bang for the buck
These two and Subaru WRX
What do you want?
I remember the days when cars like this would sell at or under MSRP. If only today that would be the case...
Type r never went for msrp. Only select few got it for that. Your just repeating bs you hear from other idiots.
@@XOX-fs4wwpretty sure he's not referring to the type r, smoothbrain
Neither. Someone else’s is making a car that fits the mold of the certain enthusiast platform. Which neither are worth their hefty price tag.
Toyota warranty voided over 85mph? Read that secret GPS tracker installed on the Toyota GR monitors speed without drivers knowledge. No way I’d ever buy a GR now. Love my Type R and considered the GR- but too much stress on 3 cylinders w over 300bhp on GR and the sneaky GPS tracker on the Toyota scratched it from consideration. Any OEM that spies on its owners to screw them on warranty repair doesn’t deserve my $.
Yep fuck them
Definitely taking the Corolla if I had too choose...
Toyota reliability
😂
😂😂😂😂😂
@@van_der_lindeDAwhat's funny bud
@jon1851 you talking about honda not being reliable, you probably have an iPhone and Playstation rather than Samsung and Xbox...same thing
@dalevanderlinde Maybe English isn't your first language, but that wasn't even me who said that illiterate tool. Even if it was, your rebuttal is still extremely moronic. I have a Samsung and a Playstation (Xbox had the red ring so I'm not sure how you got that Xbox is somehow more reliable). Finally that bs isn't ev3n relevant because it's way more important for your car to be reliable than a phone a GAME CONSOLE. Lmao, sit tf down idiot
Imagen if Toyota and Honda would work together ❤
competition drives innovation too
Not sure if these would be cross shopped. I wouldn't even consider the Honda, and it's $7000 more than the Toyota core version.
Very nice review and comparison. Both are super nice cars!
Thanks! :)
Type R rips so damn hard. Love it
Tell me if I'm wrong, but less displacement and much more power means less life for your engine?
So the pumped on audio, is it from the actual exhaust or no? If so, it shouldn’t be a big deal
