    • @McLarenMercedes
      @McLarenMercedes ปีที่แล้ว

      Peterson would have been champion in 1978 had he been allowed to race Andretti freely. But Colin Chapman told the drivers that if they held 1-2 in the race then they wouldn't race each other for the win. This is why pundits noted how Peterson often easily tailed Andretti or quickly caught up with him following late pit stops but never tried to overtake.
      Colin Chapman was aware of how frustrated Peterson was but told him in private:"Listen, the USA is a very important market for Lotus cars and with an American champion there's lots of marketing potential. In 1979 I promise you you'll be allowed to race Andretti to your heart's content."
      Gilles might very well have lived had Pironi actually followed a very similar "hold 1-2 and don't overtake each other". Gilles Villeneuve believed that Pironi had conveniently ignored this and was upset when he heard nobody at Ferrari criticized him for it (Ferrari ended up 1-2 after all).

      The rules are there to keep both drivers and teams and spectators safe. Gilles Villeneuve, the Ferrari, died in a horrendous accident only a few years after this race. Why not ask his son, Jacques, which would he prefer, his father still alive or his titles? Ask Senna's family. Ronnie Peterson's. Ask Damon Hill about his father Graham. Ask any f1 fan from the 60's about a certain driver by the name of Jim Clark. Jochen Rindt. The list is too long. I don't want it to get longer. There has been too many deaths.

    • @ddelaney712
      @ddelaney712 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you come back to me when I think of a proper answer? Thank you so much.
      Also you are talking death's that had there been rules and regulations as per today, those accidents could have been avoided. But I'm sure you were aware of my answer. Okay, maybe Graham Hills death was in a aeroplane accident but who took over from Jimmy Clark as team leader in 1968?
      And yes, I noticed your name as a troll, but a question for you, if your trolling, why are you trolling a comment about loss and death? Have you lost anyone close to you in your family or friends? If so, then you know the impact the death of a loved one has on those that remains behind. Not a proud moment if this is your intent.

    For unknown reasons I thought this battle had more laps, more contact and was at Monoco.
    Luckily after all this time (40 years), someone recognized my description;
    "Back in the early to mid 80s (maybe late 70s?) there was a Monaco Grand Prix that had me "literally" on the edge of my seat. :-)
    Two drivers were battling for, I believe third. They were bouncing against each other, wheels to wheels, interlocking wheels, rolling over wheels.
    It seemed that every lap (late in race?) one or the other driver would do something crazy and get away with it, trading the position from one to the other.
    " and let me know it was this race, not Monico. ;-)
    Thank-you for bringing an exciting memory (improved).

We've gone from pure insanity to clean room sanitised racing. Nowadays drivers complain over the radio that what Grosjean does is sketchy or dangerous. James Hunt would have seen him in the paddock after the race and punched him right in the pie hole and wouldn't have dropped the cigarette out of his mouth.

    so this happened in every race in 79? and the years before and after it? or is it just like being mesmorised by bahrain 2014 between lewis and nico. people need to stop complaining about modern f1. races like this happen every now and again and austria 2019 is one of them

    • @ddt3619
      @ddt3619 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok but fuel/PU/tires saving is killing f1. Of course it needs some reliability, but 3 power units aren't enough, maybe 3 in quali spec and 3 in race spec would be good, with another engine for FP. Who tf thought using three engines could be a good idea?
      This won't solve the overtaking/dirty air problem, but at least drivers could push harder.
      Exciting races happen, Austria 2019 was a very good race.
      They just need to let the drivers fight
