Well, considering Jacques only needed 1 point to win the championship, so it wouldn't change much whether or not the others let him by or him letting the others by
I cant fathom how much F1 content we missed throughout the years thanks to Bernies hatred for social media, common people and his elitism. The social media content since Liberty Media took over has been amazing.
I do believe halo idea concocted while Bernie still in charge. Due to unfortunate incident in Suzuka circuit that caused a driver died a few years back.
Nah Bernie is a traditionalist and not a fan of it. Besides, the halo would not have saved Bianchi in 2014 and wouldn't have prevented Massa's injury in 2009
Imagine Coulthard actually willing to give up his good position to be sure Villeneuve would win the title. He was not even in the same team. This shows how sick everyone was of the Schumi actions. And can you imagine it was only the beginning..
It wasn’t that they were sick of Schumachers actions it was the final corner of the final race of the season and he wouldn’t of gained anything in the drivers standings and it’s about respect for Villeneuve
@@MiguelBaptista1981 It depends on the driver. If for example Verstappen is in Villeneuve's position, and Vettel in DC's position it might. All depending on the drivers and who is going to win. If it's for a 7th Mercedes title I don't think they will.

Oh absolutely. The paddock was generally pretty unhappy with the penalty Jacques got in Japan. The long standing joke (proved to be 100% correct many years later) was that FIA actually meant Ferrari International Aid and that's why Jacques was disqualified in Japan.

@@valeriobenedetti7791 In my view, they let Gilles down at Imola by giving stupid pitorders, which did not mean anything (slow) and were differently interpreted by the 2 drivers, Gilles (father of Jacques) and Pironi. Gilles thought to cruise to victory to safe fuel (as he was afraid not to have enough as was discussed pre-race) but was overtaken in the Tosa corner and was furious and felt betrayed by both Pironi and Ferrari. It was to be his last race as he died 2 weeks later in Zolder during qualifying. He had always be loyal to the team and expected a bit more backup in return after all his efforts, especially when he did not attack Scheckter in 79, securing both drivers title and constructors title. Ferarri did not win the drivers title until Schumacher in 2000. I think they played it a bit dirty in 97 but fortunately, it did not paid off and the son of Gilles took finally the title home and everybody loved it.
@@morfi3395 oh yeah I knew the story, that was very sad indeed, a man like Gilles that loved the team that has been betrayed by his team mate. But I don't think Ferrari did that on purpose, even because there was Enzo at the time, and he loved Gilles

What a giant slap it was winning the title in the far superior williams. monaco and spa 97 were slaps in villeneuve face since they showed his inabillity in the wet
@@AliasMorris In F1, it's almost always the car with a combination of talent that wins championships. JV may not have been as talented as The Michael, but it takes some actual talent to win a championship at the highest level in open wheel cars. Villeneuve was just too stupid to get away from Craig Pollock who pretty much destroyed Villeneuve's career with him going to teams that literally fielded crap cars throughout the rest of his career. Considering he's also won the Indy 500 along with his F1 World Championship, JV was a talented driver that much like Alonso, had an attitude and made poor career choices that robbed him of possibly more world titles. Didn't help that Adrian Newey left Williams, went to McLaren and boom, Mika wins back to back world titles. Such is life, JV made the wrong mistakes after 1997 but he was a talented driver none the less.
Jacques is very underrated by people calling him winning just because of his car. He was a real racer with heart with honour, he didn't do any dirty moves on track. He was at his best in 1999 and 2000 with a very average car and did amazing stuff with it. After that it went down with how the cars changed and increased electronics etc. and he never adjusted so well I think. And with the quali system they had with only 1 lap and fuel they had to start the race with, he was pretty much always carrying more fuel than his teammates so he didn't look very good on quali (where he always had been very good at on different format and on light cars) and people started to shit on him. F1 needs more characters like Jacques.
Juho-Heikki K He isn't rated that high not too much because of his wins with Williams and his tittle with them, but because of his current form in NASCAR and his numerous rants on the current grid. Also for his awful decisions driven by money in F1 and the fact he got beaten by Button with his arrival for 2003. He could kind of recover with BMW, but when he did he was slowly fading out and couldn't compete with a fresh Heinfeld
Grooved tires fucked Villeneuve badly. he had a very twitchy driving style that benefitted immensely from slicks. with regulation changes and grooved tires, he was forced to adjust, and did so poorly. He still regard him as one of the best drivers in the late 90's/early 2000's, and I liked him for being outspoken.
Schumacher also tried to cheat Alonso. Monaco GP 2006 qualifying. Alonso had just set fastest first sector. Michael parks his car in the middle of Rascasse to deny Alonso pole. Michael was penalized and sent to the back of the grid. Ferrari also did it at Monza when Massa accused Alonso of impeding him in qualifying. The stewards ruled that Alonso didn't impede him but FIA still penalized him.
I watched him for his entire career. He was one of the greats in racing. There are not many who can claim the World Drivers Championship and the Indy 500 (I was there). I think his father Gilles Villeneuve was a far more naturally talented driver. His downfall was over aggression which lead to his death. Jacques was blessed with that aggression , but in a far more tempered way. He used it to win a lot of races. Being Canadian I am a little biased. He is our only World Champion and our only Indy 500 winner And that is something all Canadians are proud of.
Gilles died in the most stupid accident in F1 history. Jochen Mass should and could have more room instead of driving in the middle while Gilleswas approaching and as such forcing him to choose (the excuse that Gilles could never pass on the outside was refuted several times ..he did miracles)....and only make room when Gilles was already aside him....Fortunately not possible anymore in todays racing. Gilles drove in far less cars with awkward handling. 1981 proved his real capability. For me, Gilles is the greatest driver that ever lived but also displayed values, which I appreciate in life. He is a hero for me and I still admire him.

1996, 97 were the best moments of my love for F1. Nothing in sports even comes close to how I was emotionally.
On 7:09 you can see the Williams team and JV's management jumping in the air when Villeneuve passed Schumacher but you can see in the face of Frank Williams that he knows from 1994 that it's not over until it's over.
Great observation... The one other guy in the room that still looked worried as hell must have been a mechanical engineer that understood the car could be terminally damaged from that hit.
And Jacques joined an extremely elite club of drivers who've won both the F1 World Championship and the Indy 500. Fabulous. It was great to see Jacques back at the 500 a few years ago even if it was just a one off deal. A Champion is always a Champion and its an honor to see them race.
Those boys from Indy were really amazing. Hope Liberty brings that thrilling flame from Indy to F1 and not just the publicity stunts like vanishing the grid girls.

You know somehow it was okay at that time and nowadays it's called torpedo and will be fined hefty. I don't think MSc is at fault here trying to turn in a corner where JV just went straight like Mr. Kvyat with no intention to get the corner like a F1 Driver should. He just wanted to get ahead out of the corner at ALL COSTS. That is clearly not a good move if you truly think it was.

To get a standing ovation and applause from the entire pitlane has to be one of the biggest honors a driver can get. You never see that these days. Everyone was so happy he came out on top.
Jacque Villeneuve, is the reason I started watching F1, and still love and watch it today, even if Merc is winning everything. Great story, I remember that day, as if it was yesterday.
Nah DC just wasn't good enough. There is no shame in that. There have been many hundreds of F1 drivers who weren't good enough to be the champion. There is honor in sticking it to the man though. And there is honor in being a gentleman. Kudos to DC for doing doing the good thing.
itsmebatman and DC admits that, multiple times he was never as fast as mika over a season, but his greatest moments were always when he standing on the top step of the podium with Mika and Michael on either side of him.
He lost out on the championship in 98 because of his gentleman's quality. He and Hakkinen Had a wager, Who ever arrived at the first conner first would win the race. Hakkinen did that so later in the race when Coulthard was in front, he slowed to let Hakkinen past and the points he lost at that race was how much he lost the 98 championship by.
I seem to remember back then that apparently, Frank Williams had asked Ron Dennis before the race to keep the McLaren drivers out of the battle as their car was proving to be extremely quick at the end of the season and so he didn't want Hakkinen or Coulthard to be an additional distraction. Then when Villeneuve's car was clearly struggling after Schumacher's collision, Ron Dennis then bargained with Frank Williiams to let the McLarens go by as he had kept to their original agreement of not getting involved. Dennis of course wanted Hakkinen to score his maiden win which would prove to be the catalyst for a remarkable next few seasons for the Finn who in my opinion when he was really on it, was probably the quickest 1-lap driver that we had seen up until Hamilton arrived on the scene.
no you have it all wrong, villeneuves plan in the previous race was to hold up Schumacher and let all the other drivers pass him so Schumacher would be out of the points and he would limit the damage, but for some reason hakkinen couldn't get passed Schumacher, Villeneuve asked him about it and the McLaren drivers said why didn't he let them know before the race so McLaren decided to help Williams win the title at the jerez race, frentzen was fueled up more and told to back off so that when Schumacher pitted frentzen would be positioned just ahead of him then he could back up Schumacher into Villeneuve that plan worked and frentzen was holding up hakkinen all this time, then Schumacher was behind them then couthard and Villeneuve catching them all this was the time for McLaren to make their stops and it was originally intended for hakkinen to come in, and it made perfect sense for them to do so at that moment because they knew what frentzen was doing and he would be easily leapfrogged in the pitstops but because McLaren were helping Williams they decided to switch it to coulthard so they could get out of the way of Villeneuve while continuing to help hold up Schumacher so coulthard pitted and had a free lap in clean air while hakkinen was locked up behind frentzen still driving slowly, that's how coulthard got ahead of hakkinen and why McLaren thought it was unfair to mika so they switched it back around later after the crash the Williams was feeling unusual so Villeneuve wanted to limp home to the finish but Irvine was a danger in 4th place, so Williams called McLaren who agreed to drop their pace completely to escort Villeneuve to the end of the race, if they kept their pace they would take the lead 10 laps before the finish, even shinji nakano was faster than them at this point so in the closing stages mika is going to take the win while coulthard is going to stay back and protect, but berger passes Irvine so coulthard accelerates and takes 2nd place, while berger is the only driver who is not driving slowly or doesn't have a problem, he makes up 5 seconds on the last lap sorry for writing so long but I wanted to get all the details out because nobody else seems to know what really happened
@@bojandolinar1535 I pieced it together myself with all the details 1) brundle told the viewers about the Villeneuve conversation with McLaren drivers during the race 2) the frentzen strategy was obvious, he backed off to position himself ahead of Schumacher after the stops and held him up 3) the McLaren team switched the drivers around later in the race because they compromised hakkinen by choosing to bring in coulthard, McLaren not pitting earlier is clear indication that they weren't interested in the best result for the team 4) James allen reported in commentary that Patrick Head and Mansour Ojjeh were going into the others garages through the race even before the collision, and they were having another meeting as the race order is 1. Villeneuve 2. Coulthard 3. Hakkinen 4. Irvine 5) The McLaren drivers definitely slow up for the last third of the race, Shinji Nakano unlapped himself from Villeneuve and drove away, the McLaren drivers were slowly closing up but they were stuck behind a lapped Jordan for over 10 laps 6) The last lap is crazy and should be watched again, they have a video of it on youtube, Villeneuve lets both drivers through, coulthard slows back up again on the finish line, he later explained that he wanted to make sure Villeneuve got to the finish and would let him back through if not, berger was driving that lap as if it was his last in F1 because he passes Irvine, makes up a few seconds and almost passes Coulthard and Villeneuve on the finish line 7) it was clearly a case of race fixing, so they investigated and found the team radio explaining to Villeneuve that hakkinen had been helping through the race so he should be let through to win the race and was reminded again on the last lap from the transcript Clear (to Villeneuve): Keep concentrating, Jacques. Keep concentrating. (Pause) Hakkinen up to position two. 26.5 seconds Villeneuve. (Greater urgency) Hakkinen quite quick and very helpful. (Later) Be aware that Hakkinen is now in position two. He probably wants to win. Very helpful. (Later) DC [David Coulthard] is controlling [Eddie] Irvine. Hakkinen immediately behind you, Jacques. Immediately behind you, Hakkinen. (Later) Keep concentrating, Jacques. Hakkinen is immediately behind. Last lap. Last lap. (Extremely nervous) Hakkinen has been very helpful. Jacques, position two. Don’t let me down, Jacques. We discussed this . . . Villeneuve allows Hakkinen through to win and Coulthard to take second place
I'd like to hear the other side of the story. In reality, as a Williams and Hill fan at the time, it was a championship fully deserved, and Schumacher's antics were well established. It was a righteous victory, and Schumacher's recklessness would tarnish his reputation as a great driver despite his subsequent success.
It was as if the spirit of gilles left him after his wdc win, having fulfilled what was tragically taken away. Never again would jacques drive as well as he did in 96 and 97.
IceBloodKing Villneuve never was that good of a driver anyways. Look at the season he won his title. The reason he even rivaled Michael was because of a bunch of circumstances, like technical failures or penalties that set the stage. After Williams wasn't the dominant force anymore, he had little to offer.
Don't forget until 2000-2001, Jacques was considered as good as the best ones like Hakkinen (Schumacher was at a another class of course). In 2000 he even was the hottest driver at the moment, the main focus for the silly season. For my money, 2000 was his best year. But the drama about Jacques is we will never know what was his real level. He was still inexperienced for his world title so not at his best and when his BAR experience began to fall apart (when they fired his boss-manager Craig Pollock at the end of 2001) it was the beginning of the end with Jacques not as motivated, mostly because the team (David Richards in fact) didn't want him at all. Try to do your best when your team want you to leave... Same applies for his 2006 year with BMW. So how good was Villeneuve we will never know. But at one point, he was really well considered. Unfortunately the turn his career took and his (un)famous unspoken persona made his a black sheep in F1 for many...
"Never again would jacques drive as well as he did in 96 and 97." His success inevitably declined when he decided to collaborate with a mediocre, upstart also ran team; BAR...
He was talented but made a bad choice that cost him lol did you even watch his rookie years even after Williams was shit in 98 the drivers showed him he got talent several times dispite having a bad Williams so shut up with your imaginary theorys
@@deliriumbee4678 Not really imaginary. Jacques was quick, Gilles was legendary quick. Jacques was average or below average in wet conditions, his dad was something else. Villeneuve junior was definitely very good & quick in his own right, no one's denying that. Not sure what the bad choice which cost him was though, unless you mean the big pay cheque move to BAR in '99. It would have been interesting had he stayed at Williams through their 98-99 slump, because things got going again in 2000, and really came pretty good in the next few years before dropping off once more.
As a Canadian i cheered for Jacques so hard during this season. Schumacker was such a villain in my eyes but it looking back it was the most i enjoyed motor sports and it was two amazing drivers with great teams.
The guy never raced before age of 17, by the age of 26 he is an F1 World Driving Champion, and Indycar Champ with Indy 500 win. People bashing him are clearly do not know what they are talking about. Modern drivers start racing around age of 6, with professional teams, trainings, and support for them. I know it is hard to accept but Jacques Villeneuve is a legend! Before criticising him, look at your own lives, and achievements!
At the time blue flags were more what you'd call "guidelines" anyway. I believe a lapped Damon Hill blocking Schumacher and allowing Frenzten to close up to him in the race before this one in Japan lead to them changing the regulation so that a blue flag was a mandatory signal to move aside.
"An extra big case of champagne for Sauber and Fontana there, blocking Villeneuve like that" "What engines do they use again Murray? Ferrari isn't it?" "My, Martin, you are cynical man!"
I believe Villeuneuve was a really great driver. People don't pay enough attention at his post Williams career. He did some amazing drives between 1998-2001 in terrible cars. I will never forget some epic performances with that 1999's BAR - Supertec which was the worst car of the grid (along with the MInardi). In the Spanish GP he was running 3rd in front of the Ferraris for half the race before the car gave up. In Imola the same year he qualified 5th in front of cars with much better engine, a fantastic performance, 2 seconds faster than his teammate Mika Salo (Salo a few months later in German GP replaced the injured Schumacher in Ferrari and was faster than Irvine but had to let Irvine win). Later, in his downfall he was critisised that despite his huge salary didn't do a better job than his teammates Heidfeld and Massa but if you think about it he did against them better than Raikkonen did when he faced them as teammates and he wasn't past his prime like Villeneuve was.
constantine Look at his points average with Williams 68 while Coulthard 48 if 1994 extrapolated to full season. Frenzen only 42 Prost 99 and Hill 82. The 97 car was not that good proven by Frenzens mediocre season. Schumachers car was a little worse but not by a lot.
In 94 and 95 in Indycars he was exciting too. The guy was super brave at overtaking. He came from 2 laps down to win the Indy 500. Back in the days when Indy was great.
constantine About Gilles, haters said he was talented but he didn.t win a championship. About Jacques, haters say that he won championship but he's not talented. Same people: sometimes likes talent, sometimes championships......mad world....
I cherish the 1997 F1 season not only because it’s my birth year but also because this championship story is incredible! Especially for Jacques and and his father Gilles Villeneuve 🙌🏼🔥
Top driver: WDC, Indy 500... I really enjoyed following his career on both sides of the Atlantic. Super talented and always outspoken. A true racer. Well done, Jacques. Awesome career.
I remember watching that race at the age of 8 with my dad. So much drama, tension and real racing. Gilles Villeneuve would have been proud of his son for sure. 🇨🇦
They forgot to mention that Schumacher was stripped of all of his points for that season because of that dodgy block. A severe punishment because of what he did three years earlier at Benetton when he deliberately rammed Hill in the final race of the season. He was not punished for that thus allowing him to win the title. There was also suspicion all season that Benetton were running illegally hacked traction control software which was discovered by the FIA but inexplicably they didn't punish the team boss Flavio Briatore who would later be c caught cheating and banned from F1 for life.
they didnt use the TC. they just didnt remove the code for the TC in the software because it wouldve maybe caused bugs. actually williams did the same. later an engineer from another team discovered it while they were supplied with williams parts.
indahooddererste the FIA discovered it before senna died, wasnt hidden, and handed their car to them immediately. Williams also proved the module to make it work wasn’t on the car. Benetton jerked them around for months until they finally handed their car over. Traction control was found hidden in the computer, along with launch control, and both could be turned on by the driver. Unlike the Williams, it still had the module that made it worked. They proved that when you finish the procedure, traction control was activated on the car. Plus they had a illegal fuel filter which also helped him take the lead at Brazil. So do you really believe they didn’t use it? Just look at the start in France.
@@markhenley3097 Yeah, that was ridiculous. A three race ban for overtaking on the formation lap? I'd understand if he'd deliberately done it to stop Hill getting pole, but he gave the position back, so that was ridiculous. Still, I'm not sure about the 1994 incident itself...

@@ilanbar8612 No. You've got it all wrong. Schumi flat out cheated, and was caught cheating multiple times, yet was never punished for it. Senna was punished unfairly in 89 by the FIA and then did what he did in 90 as revenge. Mr Kacperov They were fun choices of a man who'd won it all on both sides of the ocean. It's a challenge getting a crap car into top 5 in a race. Does trashtalk others too much like young Lance.
It's such a shame he has nothing but negative comments towards the current driver's in F1. So much so Williams has banned him from coming to their pit/paddock permanently. It's disgraceful.
Cause he is, he even cant drive i think, f1 is all about development and all the champions in f1 is help their team develop, but not him and he just said bad thing about drivers in every season, look at him after that season, he dont even deserve to drive, so if u think u are know it because live in that year, u should look for data as well dude, he even cant with if his teammate play team order and again, he say Ferrari play team order
Fansen Caesar The dog of a Williams in 1998 is not due to Jacques. He outqualified HHF 11-5 in 1998 and even in poor 2000 Jordan Harald was a qualifying machine. It took 2 very fast drivers in Button and Kubica to outperform JV when he was older. The 98 Williams was very slow so Jacques gambled on low downforce at power tracks. At Monza he qualified 2nd to HHFs 12th. However, he spun out. BAR developed from a terrible car in 99 to mediocre in 2000. At some point it's on the engineers as in the decline of Sennas McLaren from 1988-93. The Schumacher Irvine season of 1996 was very similar to Senna Andretti season in 1993. The great champions could still get good if diminished results from the car but merely very good open wheel racers were lost in those cars.
Jaques is one of my heroes, as a Canadian it's one of my favourite stories ever, and I may never be able to respect Schumacher even if I can admit he was a good driver, it says something about you if you can't handle playing fairly
Andreas Kerscher it was an agreement between mclaren and williams, and other teams too. Ferrari got sauber. Coulthard wanted to win the race but the team imposed him to let hakkinen win.
That's not sportsmanship if indeed it was for the championship he would have been purposefully screwing Schumacher, by slowing down for someone from a different race team. What he did was actually terrible.
Beautifully edited, thank you for this great video. Much love for Jacques, who won as a class act against a worthy opponent who was not affraid to bend the rules. Such a beautiful real-life Hollywood ending.
those were the days. I remember sitting in front of the TV with my dad, watching every single race. Still love F1 to this day, but it will never compare to back then
So jacques took that corner in a normal way? He went wide from breaking late. I was a Jos fan but I always thought Villeneuve was also the one tot blame. If hè would waited a Lap it would have been more smooth. Williams was way faster
3:23 Ah that smile from Frank Williams. As much as a Ferrari fan i am. I really wish to see williams having a good season again. At leat win again maybe. After Mclaren unfairly kicked out Ron Dennis, Frank is the only true team boss. The only one to use his business solely to fund his car not the other way around
rockzs74r ron dennis unfairly kicked ? Spygate ? Refusing to pay the 100 million $ ticket have mercedes pay it cmon ron dennis was un unloyal piece of human shit he even tried to profit from his friend s cancer to poach his stocks in mclaren
Hollywood films are focussing on a 2 man rivalry because that allows one character to be the protagonist. But the 3 way rivalry between 3 teams in 2004 or 3, I don't remember, has been one of the greatest years in F1. The competition was between Michael Schumacher(Ferrari), Kimi Raikkonnen(McLaren) and Juan Pablo Montoya(Williams). The tire durability was very low. So many race results turned upside down in the final 10 laps, that season. One of the most fiercely contested season.
The funny thing? Fontana was fired, even when he accepted that, since then, he has been racing in touring cars in Argentina And he always says how bad he had feeling about that, and how sauber betrayed him besides he obey
This still happens today with both Mercedes and Ferrari and the smaller teams like Force India and Sauber who use their engines. We see it occassionally during blue flag periods
williams were in collusion with mclaren in this race, they knew they were stronger than ferrari in a straight battle and didnt want any interference, amazing race fixing
I was 13 years old then and had such a big crush on Jacques. Great driver and great character. I‘m sorry for Michael and his family because of his terrible accident in 2013, but in his times as a F1 driver I deeply hated him.
The 1997 season was incredibly fascinating. The Williams car was the best but through mechanical issues and retiring through accidents they left the door open for Ferrari and Michael Schumacher and the championship ended up going to the final race in Jerez. The incident where Schumacher turned in on Jacques Villeneuve remains a black spot on his otherwise glittering career, with the 1994 Adelaide, 2006 Monaco and 2010 Hungaroring incidents in particular also blotting him. It's hard to tell if he had a pre-determined mindset to try and take Villeneuve out but it happened on instinct anyway when Villeneuve suddenly dived down the inside at the hairpin. You can see that Schumacher goes to turn into the corner, straightens when Villeneuve appears and then turns in again in an instinctive move to try and take him out. It failed to work and I can remember Martin Brundle even commentating at the time that he'd hit the wrong part of Villeneuve's car. To explain his mindset, Schumacher first began racing in the early 90s when the likes of Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and the late Aryton Senna were the kings of the sport. In 1990 with the championship on the line, Senna deliberately took Prost out at the first corner of the final race at Suzuka to take the title. So Schumacher thought that if it was OK for Senna to deliberately take an opponent out to win that he could do it too. The problem was that after the dark weekend at Imola in 1994 where Senna and Roland Ratzenberger tragically died in separate accidents, the safety of the sport had come into serious question and it no longer became acceptable to use the cars as kamikaze weapons like Senna had done to Prost in 1990. Schumacher failed to pick up on this with the incidents that decided the 1994 and 1997 championships, although he got away with it in 1994 and was disqualified from the championship in 1997.
I was born in 82. I'm canadian. Jaques got people like me into F1. Antics like this from Ferrari are why I'll never cheer for them. Even if other teams do and have done similar things. This holds a sour taste lol.

As a kid I was a big fan of Gilles, when he passed I was heart broken, sure that I would never live to see a Canadian win the F1 Championship. Then Jacques came along and on this morning on the west coast I was awake at 4:00 in the morning and pacing in front of the TV to see him outfox Michael and Ferrari for the win!! Unforgettable !!!
Shortly before Gilles died, during an interview he expressed interest in participating in the Indianapolis 500. JV won the Indianapolis 500 in style coming back from being 2 laps down in car No. 27. To me as well as other Gilles fans no doubt, on that day in 1995, as well as 1997, my questions of _"What if"_ about Gilles was answered. It was almost like a message from the gods of racing.

Williams cars are overrated. Even though HHF had a slightly off 1997 he still would have had at least 55 points in the car if it was as good as Schumies. Frentzen had twelve more points in his 1999 Jordan than in his 1997 Williams. So at best the 1997 Williams was slightly worse than the Ferrari. Irvine needs a near perfect car to be really fast. He'd hate to admit Jacko beat him 80-24 in a slightly worse car. Williams had so much confidence in Jacques that he could fire Hill. Jacques was only 26. Frank knew even if HHF fell on his face a bit in 1997; which he did: that Williams would win the constructors championship going away. Irvine only had 11 points in 1996 whilst a declining Benetton car was piloted by two aging legends. McLarens car was so bad in 1996 that Hakkinen and DC could only muster 49 points between them with no wins. Frentzen is a "Dead"💀 ringer for Duchovney. I'd like to see him or Ralf S or Irvine replace that 😴😴 Nascar driver on the Grand Tour. It could be an "Undertaking" to get him hired to the show though.😂
Oh and Raikkonen had the slightly worse car in 2003. People take begging the question with their favourites to new heights when it comes to the quality of cars. They think "well my guy must have had a much worse car for his opponents to defeat him or even come close."
I love how Jacques and his legendary big mouth played the media beautifully in order to bring the necessary attention that Michael was most likely going to try something unsportsmanlike. Well played JV!

Awesome Jacques! The better man won. A great champion, and a great driver. Schumacher was then disqualified from the championship and lost his second place standing.
It's been 27 years. At that time I was just 18 and of course an absolute Schumi & Ferrari fan. The German press always portrayed Williams as the bad rival and couldn't believe that Schumacher was the bad guy here. Today I see it differently, Villeneuve and Williams were the fair players and absolutely deserved it! But Schumi got his just punishment and probably learned from it. Later, he deservedly became 4-time World Champion with Ferrari

Juho-Heikki K 2001 was very good also.
Juho-Heikki K He isn't rated that high not too much because of his wins with Williams and his tittle with them, but because of his current form in NASCAR and his numerous rants on the current grid. I watched him for his entire career. He was one of the greats in racing. There are not many who can claim the World Drivers Championship and the Indy 500 (I was there). I think his father Gilles Villeneuve was a far more naturally talented driver. His downfall was over aggression which lead to his death. Haha DC is a gent for slowing down out of the last corner.
Not being rude because I really like DC, but that is probably why he never made World Champion :(
Nah DC just wasn't good enough.
Thats whh he was never champion.
Dennis of course wanted Hakkinen to score his maiden win which would prove to be the catalyst for a remarkable next few seasons for the Finn who in my opinion when he was really on it, was probably the quickest 1-lap driver that we had seen up until Hamilton arrived on the scene.
no you have it all wrong, villeneuves plan in the previous race was to hold up Schumacher and let all the other drivers pass him so Schumacher would be out of the points and he would limit the damage, but for some reason hakkinen couldn't get passed Schumacher, Villeneuve asked him about it and the McLaren drivers said why didn't he let them know before the race
so McLaren decided to help Williams win the title at the jerez race, frentzen was fueled up more and told to back off so that when Schumacher pitted frentzen would be positioned just ahead of him then he could back up Schumacher into Villeneuve
that plan worked and frentzen was holding up hakkinen all this time, then Schumacher was behind them then couthard and Villeneuve catching them all
this was the time for McLaren to make their stops and it was originally intended for hakkinen to come in, and it made perfect sense for them to do so at that moment because they knew what frentzen was doing and he would be easily leapfrogged in the pitstops but because McLaren were helping Williams they decided to switch it to coulthard so they could get out of the way of Villeneuve while continuing to help hold up Schumacher
so coulthard pitted and had a free lap in clean air while hakkinen was locked up behind frentzen still driving slowly, that's how coulthard got ahead of hakkinen and why McLaren thought it was unfair to mika so they switched it back around later
after the crash the Williams was feeling unusual so Villeneuve wanted to limp home to the finish but Irvine was a danger in 4th place, so Williams called McLaren who agreed to drop their pace completely to escort Villeneuve to the end of the race, if they kept their pace they would take the lead 10 laps before the finish, even shinji nakano was faster than them at this point
so in the closing stages mika is going to take the win while coulthard is going to stay back and protect, but berger passes Irvine so coulthard accelerates and takes 2nd place, while berger is the only driver who is not driving slowly or doesn't have a problem, he makes up 5 seconds on the last lap

For me, the quickest we have already seen in one lap, was senna
@@MrRodzilla Interesting story, haven't known all the details. What is your source for this?
@@bojandolinar1535 I pieced it together myself with all the details
1) brundle told the viewers about the Villeneuve conversation with McLaren drivers during the race
2) the frentzen strategy was obvious, he backed off to position himself ahead of Schumacher after the stops and held him up
3) the McLaren team switched the drivers around later in the race because they compromised hakkinen by choosing to bring in coulthard, McLaren not pitting earlier is clear indication that they weren't interested in the best result for the team
4) James allen reported in commentary that Patrick Head and Mansour Ojjeh were going into the others garages through the race even before the collision, and they were having another meeting as the race order is 1. Villeneuve 2. Coulthard 3. Hakkinen 4. Irvine
5) The McLaren drivers definitely slow up for the last third of the race, Shinji Nakano unlapped himself from Villeneuve and drove away, the McLaren drivers were slowly closing up but they were stuck behind a lapped Jordan for over 10 laps
6) The last lap is crazy and should be watched again, they have a video of it on youtube, Villeneuve lets both drivers through, coulthard slows back up again on the finish line, he later explained that he wanted to make sure Villeneuve got to the finish and would let him back through if not, berger was driving that lap as if it was his last in F1 because he passes Irvine, makes up a few seconds and almost passes Coulthard and Villeneuve on the finish line
7) it was clearly a case of race fixing, so they investigated and found the team radio explaining to Villeneuve that hakkinen had been helping through the race so he should be let through to win the race and was reminded again on the last lap
from the transcript Clear (to Villeneuve): Keep concentrating, Jacques. Keep concentrating. (Pause) Hakkinen up to position two. 26.5 seconds Villeneuve. As a teenager (and Canadian) I remember waking up early to watch this race. I was so pumped to see Jacques win.
Didn’t tarnish anything.
@@conors4430 definitely did.
It was as if the spirit of gilles left him after his wdc win, having fulfilled what was tragically taken away.
Never again would jacques drive as well as he did in 96 and 97.
He chose money....
Unfortunately the turn his career took and his (un)famous unspoken persona made his a black sheep in F1 for many...
it was newey the murder and renault v10
"Never again would jacques drive as well as he did in 96 and 97."
His success inevitably declined when he decided to collaborate with a mediocre, upstart also ran team; BAR...
What an awesome guy so down to earth. I'm just really glad he won that year and beat Michael, and also fulfilled the Villeneuve Leagcy.
A less talented driver than his dad, yet he won the championship. Gilles would have been proud. Shame he never got to see it.
Lets not say far less talented. The guy won F1 championship, Indy and Indy 500. He did peak early though, some athletes do.
I wouldn’t say far less talented but I think Gilles was better than Jacque, I wish Jacque could have been good for a longer period of time though.
@@sweetswing1 I don't think he peaked early. He came to F1 late. I think Jacques' peak started in his Indy days.
Very sporting of Coulthard to be fair. Thanks for posting, Villeneuve was so great to watch. A great rivalry and he thoroughly deserved his title.
5:00 Honestly! Blue Flag!
At the time blue flags were more what you'd call "guidelines" anyway. I believe a lapped Damon Hill blocking Schumacher and allowing Frenzten to close up to him in the race before this one in Japan lead to them changing the regulation so that a blue flag was a mandatory signal to move aside.
Like Honestly, what are we doing here !???
"An extra big case of champagne for Sauber and Fontana there, blocking Villeneuve like that"
"What engines do they use again Murray? Ferrari isn't it?"
"My, Martin, you are cynical man!"
Pavlos Lepaul I
Norberto later got a ferrari drivers cockpit for his help
Back in the days when Indy was great.
constantine i agree. He was a clean and wasnt all the tome looking for the media cause his maneuvers.trully champ

20 years already? Fuck me, I’m old.
Just look at the start in France.
porscheoscar But Michael got banned for overtaking during the formation lap which is retarded.
@@markhenley3097 Yeah, that was ridiculous. A three race ban for overtaking on the formation lap?

Coulthard wanted to win the race but the team imposed him to let hakkinen win.
No, sportsmanship should be about giving everything you got to achieve results, and thereby giving your components a chance to do the same.
Niels Peter Brøgger Egebo Or being a team player if needed.
Agreed, always considered DC even too kind for this sport
That's not sportsmanship if indeed it was for the championship he would have been purposefully screwing Schumacher, by slowing down for someone from a different race team. What he did was actually terrible.

Together your father, you've been a legend of F1 circus and unbeliveble driver👍🏆👊
You know you made something big when Alain Prost congratulates you. 9:46

HHF the most underrated master driver
This was some sweet karma for HHF, as Schumacher stole his girlfriend earlier in their careers!
Haha what? He hardly stole her, I'm sure Corinna was capable of making a decision of who she wanted to be with herself ffs
Let me rephrase then.
This was some sweet karma for HHF, as his girlfriend left him for Schumacher earlier in their careers!
