Interpretation: a warrior was fatally struck by arrows in a conflict that occurred before the opening. As he stumbles through the forest and finally laid down to die in hopelessness, his life force slowly lifted up and wafted towards the heavens, two forest imps came across the warrior and preserved his life force by binding it temporarily to his body with ceremonial rags. The warrior, now straddling the realm between life and death, aware but yet unconscious, was then carried by the imps towards a pre-specified location, for reasons then yet unknown to him. As the imps depart, one of them signaled with its bells (by tossing it) that another troubled soul has fallen, and the mother spirit of the forest emerges to claim the warrior's life force and puts his soul to rest in the eternal aether (here, shown as the water). In the epilogue, the warrior's life force is absorbed into the forest and the cycle of life begins anew, the warrior's body laid down as if in peaceful slumber, all signs of previous conflict completely removed.
Always felt they were shinigami wandering the battlefield and its outskirts and helping ferry souls to the afterlife, basically valkyries in the video. And the wrapping is the warrior not wanting to accept death until the moment when he can die right, like a peaceful/zen place to meet the shinigami. It's beautiful no matter how you see it.
the message of this video is incredible, everything is so symbolic, even the glowing ring in the last few seconds which is a metaphor for the circle of life. nothing ever truly dies. everything is rebirthed.
Ruthwik Rao In psychiatry terminology, "rebirthing" is a form of psychotherapy in which the subject supposedly "relives" the experience of being born in order to confront and overcome traumas and anxieties stemming from birth. Kind of like nature does when it heals itself to start anew. It's the same thing, no need to correct my grammar.
moonmothh Haha thanks for the info And obviously, I didn't know that. Anybody would think the same without the knowledge of psychiatry. Either way, sorry for that. Thanks again
I'm fairly sure the video was inspired by the end of the Kurosawa film, Throne of Blood which draws on Shakespeare's Macbeth. The witch talks about mans decay and rebirth, from rot to beauty.
John Doe the video producer has also done many other music videos for some amazing artists like Flying Lotus and Bonobo. Young replicant, check him out.

God, this is so beatiful. I listened the song for years, and just now discovered that it has it's own video. And they're fit together so perfectly. Makes me make something beatiful as well..
@Jeuce Interesting take! I interpreted it as the two entities were moving him to a place in the forest where his 'lifeforce' or whatever was needed more. I saw the 3rd entity as a mother nature sort of character who sucks his lifeforce out to give it back to the forest/life still growing around him [as the plants emit the lifeforce after]. For me, the first two entities were lesser spirits/helpers to the third. The circle shown at the end also makes me think it's a 'circle of life' theme.
This song breaks my heart so much The girl I was supposed to get married to would sing this with me all the time This was our song I miss happiness like that
Absolutely beautiful, I can't really express how incredible I think this video is. Just wonderfully imaginative and captivating, the beauty of the unknown, direction is top notch.
this is ridiculously beautiful, gave me chills and tears, as I know this experience. thank you for beautiful song and video paired exquisitely, from my soul, thank you x
Whatever you say. In my opinion, this is an artistic masterpiece, both visually and aurally. Baths is a fantastic musician and Alex Takacs really know what he's doing with video production.
i love listening to this song when i'm blazed and i love listening to this song when i'm sober. but the only true way to experience this song is to listen to it while you have your soul plucked gently from your lips by white-clad spirits as you lay in a forest, terrified but blissfuly moving from this world on to a better one. now everyone shut the fuck up and enjoy this beautiful piece of art.
WOW. Just discovered Baths today. So far, this and Animals are just pure bliss for my ears. It is so rare to find an artist that really takes me like his work has. Amazing.
one of the greatest songs of all time. seriously. the vocals took a few playthroughs to really appreciate, but in hindsight.....amazing, brilliant, epic.
watching this stoned is a must. I am so high right now and after watching that I feel higher. The whole concept of the song and the video are exquisite. I am so pleased that this exists.

This was my and one of best friends favorite songs. We worked around trying to remix this song, just messing around, yang? Paired it with all kinds of songs, and had a few you could call a "success". But it still wasn't right. Unfortunately, he passed before we could get it right. But I still love baths and especially this song. Reminds me of youthful hope and dreams
I'm over here thinking yay he's about to be revived by the forest weirdos, then come to find out they taking his soul and on top of all that left him there. More savage than the people who shot him with arrows smh.
[Spec.Tre] In a way they did revive him. Just as many different things, as evidenced by his soul seen rising out of numerous plants and such. I feel like perhaps if anything maybe they stopped him from passing on. His soul was definitely going SOMEWHERE. The two littler ones it's kind of put some corks in him and brought him to the alpha female. Also only the two little ones wear bells on their feet. Not sure why, but it's a cool detail.
apparently he was very ill for one of his albums i forgot the name of it but its the one with dark dude on the front.from what heard he was bed ridden for quite some time
@Kalhalla Alternatively, it could have just been him, mortally wounded, grasping to life, crawling through the woods, fading in and out of consciousness, and hallucinating the entire thing. I don't really know how to think of it, but, great video!!! and Great song! Love it! amazing work.
I found this music video this weekend, and I called it a masterpiece. 6/8 of the people I've shown it to basically said "that's way too weird to be good." Weird? More like absolutely desirable, I would love to die like that...
@Jeuce I don't see opposition between the entities, in fact I see teamwork. The first two entities are merely ensuring safe delivery of his soul to the 3rd entity, who is obviously in charge. I see the queen (3rd entity) as mother nature herself (and God at the same time), returning the fallen samurai back to the earth which once produced him. Either way it's always a good sign for a video when you can pick it apart and analyze it like this.

I have always thought something similar, but that the "mother spirit" is just a physical representation of death.
Always felt they were shinigami wandering the battlefield and its outskirts and helping ferry souls to the afterlife, basically valkyries in the video. And the wrapping is the warrior not wanting to accept death until the moment when he can die right, like a peaceful/zen place to meet the shinigami.

@@lbigotti11 no the mother spirit is responsible for reproduction and growth of all the beautiful plants

I’ve always loved this music video. The design of those two spirits/creatures is really fantastic!

Reborn you mean
But yeah...
Great video

Having a spiritual experience from watching/hearing this. Well done.

Jeez that must have sucked walking through the forest with wet socks on dying.
Dang didn't even think about that
And just for a music video
You dont feel it anymore, when you wear them long enough
This video is amazing, what youll find the more you journey into the unkown is a mind blowing mystery.
