"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a nine-part Pink Floyd composition written by Roger Waters, Richard Wright and David Gilmour. It is a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett. The song was first performed on their 1974 French tour, and recorded for their 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. The song was intended to be a side-long composition (like "Atom Heart Mother" and "Echoes"), but was ultimately split into two parts and used to bookend the album, with new material composed that was more relevant to this song, and to the situation in which the band found themselves.

I'm 74 and want to include some of their music into my funeral dirge !
My friends and I used to listen to this song/album late at night 40 years ago after the parties had ended. Complete silence, no iPhones, just listening to it. Every time I hear it again I stop what I’m doing and turn it up and I’m magically transported back to that era. I’m 57 now and a 25 year cop and it is a nice break/memory. Next year I’ll be retired and listening to it with a joint in my hand again.

Tomorrow is the funeral service for my brother who took his own life on June 10, 2024. He suffered from schizophrenia. This will be the last song. He was only 39 years old. Now he is free. For those who aren’t aware, this song is about Pink Floyd’s original guitarist, Syd Barrett. Shine On (S) You Crazy (Y) Diamond (D). Syd apparently took a lot of psychedelic drugs while quite young, which is thought to have induced schizophrenia. (It’s also been said that his mental health issues were inevitable, but the drugs were a catalyst) “Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky”. That’s how a lot of people apparently described him after the damage was done. I hope he’s found peace.

My Dad died to this song in his bed at home. It was as if he chose this song for his passage or the song released the tension that he was hanging onto. I held his hand and told him it's ok to go now. We will be ok. And he began to relax and took one last look at me then left. Pink Floyd means more to me now than it did even then if that's possible. A thousand times, this song has healed my wounds. Once again, it is doing the same. I'm a Canadian country boy now living in Japan with an exceptionally intelligent, and nearly crazy Japanese wife. Her mother caught the covid virus today, yet she can still find time to blame me for being insufficient, though I took her mother to the hospital. I only asked her to " leave me alone to listen to this song. It brings me peace". Yet she tried again and again to make me understand that I must tr harder to be valuable to the whole community. I'm friggin' tired. I need a break. ,,,at least until tomorrow.

I remember when I was young. The summer of 84 found me on my Uncles farm in central Kansas, wheat country, on the back of a lonely tractor under the Kansas sun. From dawn to evening, I made concentric passes around the harvested wheat fields at 1.5 MPH, no one else around (for sometimes) miles. I brought a tape recording of the album ‘Wish You Were Here’ and would listen to it through headphones in the evenings and look out of the 2nd floor window of my room across the endless prairie of Pastures and wheat fields as the sun set on another day. It was so long ago now for me.
When I listen to this song now, my mind is filled the the sights, sounds and smells of my uncles old farm. What I would not give to go back to that time, to have one more summer of working with my uncle on his farm, driving tractors and enjoying the sunrises and sunsets of central Kansas, listening to the ‘Wish You Were Here’ album. To catching a small part of my past and enjoying the moment again.

The fact that this song is dedicated to their closest friend and original leader of the band Syd Barrett, who had mental health problems but nonetheless was a huge inspiration for them even after he left the band is heartbreaking

My name is Yoshikage Kira. I am 33 years old. I live in the Northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. Just like a baby, I wake up with no fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I am a person who wishes to have a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

This song holds an incredible spot in my heart. I remember being very young and watching my mom dance and spin around the living room and kitchen listening to this as loud as our living room speakers could push it. Cleaning and enjoying herself with a Joint in hand. Then of course, the lyrics would come. And she would sing like it was her last breath on earth. I miss her dearly to this day, and every time I hear this song, I can see her once more enjoying life as it unfolded in front of her. Taking on every obstacle, like nothing was too big. My best friend just passed away and he was a once in a lifetime type of friend. The kind of person who opens your mind up and pushes you to be more conscious of the energies of this universe. He died way too young. He was a bit different. When we were young people would laugh at him for being goofy or even too smart and dorky, but I always loved him for who he was. He took his mind to new places that would make most human beings cower in fear, and his fearlessness inspired me to grow into a more genuine human being. Losing him early breaks my heart, and this song captures that emotion. RIP Sherman Kaplitz. You were a diamond that will continue to shine for eternity. I love you brother.

We are 32 years old and live in the north western (so getting this wrong) section of Morioh where the villas are. We work at (forgot workplace) and be home by 8 pm, we make sure we're in bed by 11pm after drinking a warm glass of milk and doing streches for the 20 minutes. My girlfriend’s father introduced me to Pink Floyd. This was the first song he played, at 23.00 waiting for her to arrive back after her flight from a rowing competition. Those 13 minutes of my life set me up on an emotional journey with Pink Floyd. Their songs are perfect for me to connect and express my feelings when listening to music. This is a perfect song which is just absolutely sensational. The guitar is played note perfect every second. Powerful to say the least. It also helped me create an amazing bond with my girlfriends father and we have continued to spend quality time together listening to music as two. Thank you Pink Floyd for the creation of this art.

I remember when i was 14, my brother used to listen to this song in his room. He played his music very loud, i could hear it through closed door. He would stand on the balcony and smoke cigarette while looking straingt ahead of him, and thinking about his life, and he was only 18... I wish he wasn't burdened by his thoughts at that young age, and instead he was happy and content with his life and he would spend more time with me his younger sister....now i am 40 and my dearest brother is no longer amongst us 😢... I just turned 17, I always wanted to get into this band and finally i got enough courage to listen to their songs. I can feel shivers run down my spine whenever i hear their music, It truly is best decision i have ever made...
I listened to this for hours when my son passed away. I was never the same, I hated this world, I hated my life. I survived it, but I was never the same. I had to be strong for the next 3 kids I was entrusted to raise. When you fail at everything I ever tried, I thought I had that right. I guess I was wrong. Now it is time to just shine on!
