I'm literally in tears as I think about the beauty of the symbolism here. It took years to set in, but it definitely has. Thank you FlyLo and all others involved
the part when he gets up and gets in the car, to me, it's as if he's descending from his body. it's his spirit. nobody recognizes him as he walks away, he gets in the vehicle with Flylo and drives away to the afterlife. it's my favorite part of this short film, gives me goosebumps every time. thank you Flylo and Khalil Joseph.
What I get from this video... the young black child naively shooting the gun and having the bullet ricochet off of the sides of the pool and strike and kill him. This symbolizes the young black youth hurting and damaging themselves without knowing any better. The J dilla saved my life t-shirt shows exactly what it intends which is the power of music and positivity that can teach and give you an outlet for channeling positive creative energy instead of succumbing to the poisonous distractions in your environment. And the brother dancing after his death.... his spirit was free and rejoicing to the true beauty and peace he could finally see and realize. His spirit even had enough love forgiveness and understanding to get into the car of the people who shot him. The ghetto is a mind set. In reality it's just a place to live. Human behavior dictates what your environment is. You can live in poverty but live respecting ,protecting and loving the people who share the same environment with you. Doing this will make you turn your GHETTO into a COMMUNITY.
***** Thank you. But that idea can be put into action one person at a time. First and foremost it starts with you. The page has to be turned because we can't continue to live the way we have.
A lot of Native American and different cultures believe that instead of some mournful event of the body and the spirit separating with death and sadness, the spirit happily dances into the after life. It's called Spirit dance
For me, Flying Lotus is the inheritor of the creative genius of his great uncle (John Coltrane). This is truly a piece of art not only open to interpretation but it tells a story of the inherent problematic elements of the "hood" with a level of honesty and authenticity that is missing tremendously in music today. I am honored to bear witness to this artist for keeping the flame of Hip Hop alive. Peace.
In Nickerson Gardens there is a wall called " The Wall " with the names of nearly hundreds of people written on it. The wall was dedicated to victims of gun violence but then extended to include other people in the community who lost their lives. At 2:47 , whether its intentional or not, when he passes all the people leaning against the wall its like the man is finally getting to greet fellow residents of Nickerson Gardens who have passed away.
This really captures both the tragedy of death as well as the freedom that it provides from this Earthly realm as the deceased soon move on to a more beautiful and spectacular place.
It's his soul releasing all emotions and what's left of life at once, like a burst of energy and he's translating it into physical form (dance) so we can understand it better. All that transpiring while he's passing from the conscious world to whatever comes next. At least that's what I feel is happening in that death scene. Pure art/genius
what i think the meaning of this video is is as he dances around after being shot he touches and moves by many people. Moves by people because he moved alot of people within his lifespan. earlier in the video it shows him being kind to some younger kids, Making a difference in his community, the car he gets in at the end is the car going to heaven, and then the world unfortunate resumes as if nothing happend once he is gone.
I agree, but I think there is also the possibility that this is representing how narrowly some people escape the ghetto. What ever it is, its beautiful.
I keep watching this over and over- the emotions it elicits are overwhelming. Flying Lotus always works with amazing artists. No matter how old the videos are they are always poignant.
Amazing dance at 2:00! It's like his spirit is undergoing excruciating pain but at the same time celebrating death, because death means liberation, and brings about a new space-time continuum, a new life.
WOW...have you ever just felt a huge amount of emotion surge through you in a momentary experience? Cause thats exactly what just happened to me. One the best presentations ive ever seen.
It's interesting watching this video now in 2016, since the video for "Never Catch Me" has come out, which depicts children transitioning from life to death with dance. It's fascinating that FlyLo seems to enjoy depicting something so painful, scary, and inevitable as death, and make it seem like something peaceful and beautiful.
Actually, its the other way around. The children were finally ALIVE, hence the free dance/movement/abilities. The 'Never Catch Me' album's title even says it. 'You're Dead' THIS 'world' is the land of the 'dead.' The 'underworld.' We are no where near alive/free here. Anyone who reads this and doesnt understand, dont bother with arguing, just ignore it. > U NEVER READ THIS...we now return u to ur regularly scheduled programming. And any human who thinks that they are 'free'/'alive' here, has a grand & wonderful surprise in store for them. So, no need to worry, it gets better, not worse. 💜
Poetry in motion. This was so dope. It kinda has the underlying message of being in the hood or ghetto and having to portray a certain image or false perspective of culture when really most under privlaged people are the most talented and smart individuals.
This was beautifully composed and executed. I was transformed and immersed into every scene. A big fat ass yes to all of this. Respect Kahlil Joseph and your entire cast and crew.
God, this is so beautiful. I just can not stop crying when I am watching it. The music, the visuals, all fit so perfectly together. Flying Lotus and his team are truly artists.
The 4 moments of the Sun in Kongo cosmology...The soul awakening to the realization of the body's death and dancing away into the afterlife via the caddy....This was brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you nailed it right! this is his soul leaving in a beautiful manner while the ppl are wrapped in the death itself, it was made to at first appear as if it was in reverse, but thats just showing the freshness of the direction. this is a thing that keeps touching me, its like his soul is rejoicing and the dance itself is otherworldly because its representing something from the other side.
Check out the director's other videos his name is Khalil Joseph. He did one for FKA twigs and right now has a Kendrick Lamar short film playing at MOCA in L.A.
Breathtaking! This piece presses out of me a hunger for more. I am in awe of the exceptional and beautiful artistry that fills this and many Flying Lotus vids.
Yeah, A lot of them were looking away from him- which I think aligns with the story- he disrobed and was a spirit they couldn't see. getting to look away would have helped me keep a straight face for sure!
I remember listening/watching this when it first came out at a time when I felt so heartbroken hopeless unexpressive so contained and on the verge of self destructing.. I'm still here
This video makes me so damn proud about loving Hip-Hop. I honestly wish I can show this to the whole world, and let the world know that Hip-hop has a beautiful side to it.
When I heard the hidden sample in the music - which was a tribute to J Dilla btw - I couldn't take it anymore and dropped a tear*. The word 'masterpiece' has been abused so terribly much over the years, but honestly, this is like the first or maybe second time I feel like I could safely call something that. This production here is indeed a masterpiece. Emotionally, it is so packed, it could have an impact on how you live through the rest of your day. ___ *not ashamed.
So… is anyone talking about how that finger picking guitar that happens before the beat drops is a composition by Johnny Greenwood from the score he did for the film Norwegian Wood? I just fucking realized that! Pretty much a dream come true to hear music by Johnny Greenwood on the same track as music by Flying Lotus
2 weeks ago a young black kid was shot and killed literally down my street..now this video carries even more meaning for me. Such a shame...we live in one fucked up world.. I remember when this girl I was seeing showed me this..thought it was pretty interesting and I knew the melody from somewhere but couldn't place it at the time(GTAV)...anyway, she was the one that got away so the video will always carry meaning to me...this is a beautiful piece of art and she had amazing taste..

Messed around and watched this trippin on shrooms......this is EASILY one of the deepest videos I've seen so far! FlyLo is king man!! Coronus, the Terminator video is no joke either.
My personal interpretation: the boy in the beginning lives by the gun, dies by the gun. The reason is because he idolizes/symbolizes the man with the J Dilla shirt. The boy also represents the misguided black youth without parental supervision out in the streets. The man with the J Dilla shirt is also killed, but his spirit lives on. His spirit continues to dance, unobserved by the witnesses and into the red vehicle, which takes him to his next destination: Heaven or Hell? Compare the contrast of this setting (dark/night) and the man to the setting of the two kids (bright/day) in Never Catch Me. You decide!
Personally, While I agree that the boy lives and dies by the gun, and idolizes the man in the J Dilla shirt, I do believe that "J Dilla man" is actually a good guy, and is being a positive impact on the kids. His death represents the death to the idea that these kids even have a glimmer of hope in leaving, that nothing good can survive the streets. His dance off seems positive, and I think it represents his drive to heaven for the good he has done Edit: Also, saying that Dilla was a huge inspiration to Flylo, and may have been a guide to help get HIM off the street, the man could represent of a version of how Dilla guided Flylo out of the streets
So many times I've seen this and it stays eternally. Life in the times of a neighborhood like that one in anywhere U.S.A. where innocence always has a chance to grow up in many ways and while hoping to not live the life of a fellow neighbor who got caught up with the darker side of the block. The music is the child and the freedom of the soul. Modern day visuals to the same ol' problem. Innocence vs Ignorance. Creation vs Destruction. The power and The responsibility. Absolutely serene... Many thanks...
This video is so beautiful, but does anyone have any thoughts on what the video is actually representing during the dancing scene? I was imagining it representing what it feels like to die and drift off into the next life, but then he gets into the car are drives off. Any thoughts?
I feel that is his soul leaving his body. Everyone surrounding him is still staring at the crime scene or his body. As he leaves in the car with FlyLo ambulances are approaching, but he has already passed. He has passed all of his friends, neighbors, and even the medics as they arrive.
What you both described was exactly what I thought as well. This video is a perfect example of something that can be beautiful and artistic with the perfect amount of imagination and interpretation without being overly nonsensical.
If you want the lyrics just keep listening to the song. And to all the hardcore flylo fans, we cant upset that people hear about him through mainstream means. Lets just be happy theyre not killing brain cells with YMCMB. Flylo is love, dont ruin his music with your hate. Plus, we all gotta start somewhere.
I think Flylo has the best interpretation of death than any other artist
psychedelics is life and death in one trip. especially shrooms. you can tell he has done his share with his music
Coronus the terminator steps it up a notch.
If you dont have Jesus Christ blood on your heart we face judgment in next life God bless

Right now it's in on MASP, São Paulo/Brazil Museum.

Interesting interpretation
Personally, While I agree that the boy lives and dies by the gun, and idolizes the man in the J Dilla shirt, I do believe that "J Dilla man" is actually a good guy, and is being a positive impact on the kids. His death represents the death to the idea that these kids even have a glimmer of hope in leaving, that nothing good can survive the streets. His dance off seems positive, and I think it represents his drive to heaven for the good he has done
Edit: Also, saying that Dilla was a huge inspiration to Flylo, and may have been a guide to help get HIM off the street, the man could represent of a version of how Dilla guided Flylo out of the streets
+Max Bucksbaum that's also a dope interpretation. It's like no good can exist in the ghetto without getting caught up in gunfire. The good die young!
