    Nice overview, but a BIG ommission is that you don't mention that Bol changed her stride pattern to 14 steps between the hurdles in the winter from 2022 to 2023. This was fundamental because this was clearly the key to unlocking another level of performance... The big question we are all asking of course is: what is mcLaughlin doing?

    • @RunnerBoi
      @RunnerBoi  หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I actually did consider this after watching a vid of her talking about it! I wasn't 100% sure though just how ergogenic this change was given her flat speed had notably improved too, but a fair consideration nonetheless haha.

    • @hermanmertens8383
      @hermanmertens8383 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@RunnerBoi To be a bit picky I must say I also missed a view on her trainings labor. She is a very hard, dedicated and disciplined worker. But you very good emphasized the constant growth in her career, that hasn’t ended yet. Her trainer Laurent Meuwly said recently that test during last winter training pointed in the direction of increased raw speed, endurance and power.
      According to her changed stride pattern: that is a huge change, but necessary because with 15 steps she endend too short before the hurdles at the cost of speed. This transition was started more than a year ago and was initially meant to fully pay off not before Paris. That is the time and place to step out of my comfort zone, she recently said.
      Maybe you concentrated a little too much on her steady improving performances. I would have liked to have your opinion about an expected outdoor time, related to her indoor WR in Glasgow.

      @@RunnerBoi Well the switch to 14 steps certainly marked a next step up in the hurdles performance, and I even think it will have had an influence on her flat 400 performance because it enabled her to start using her natural long stride in a more free and natural way...

    For all clarity: SML's WR of 50.68 is otherworldly of course, however it should be kept in mind that Femke Bol only started on the hurdles in 2019, while McLaughlin started hurdling in 2016 or earlier, so when this happend in 2022 Bol had only 3 years of experience on the hurdles, while McLaughlin had more than 6 years of experience... That is a massive difference.

    • @aredditor4272
      @aredditor4272 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Something else to think about, Mclaughlin is only 6 months older than Bol, and Mclaughlin's split in her 4x400 win was also otherworldly - 47.91

    • @rientsdijkstra4266
      @rientsdijkstra4266 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@aredditor4272 Maybe, but Bol's split in the WC was 48.43 (and NOT the 48.75 that was published only months later), which is very quick also, and Bol is consistently quicker on the flat (Bol's indoor WR is worth 1272 IAF points, McLaughlins PB on the flat is worth 1257 IAF points). But split times on relays are very unreliable anyway, because on the relay the runners get a flying start as they already are making speed in the hand-over zone, before they actually cross the startline... And how much speed they already build up in that handover zone is very dependent on the way the handover goes. So relay times are really not comparable to anything. However, if we start speculating (!), I have a few other interesting speculations for you: Bol's WR on the flat indoor is 49.17, which is a whopping 0.42 seconds faster than Jarmila Kratochvilova's WR from 38 years before. But Jarmila Kratochvilova also was the last holder of the Outdoor 400m WR with a time of 47.99 before Marita Koch ran her infamous 47.60. This 47.99 by Kratochvilova also happens the only other sub 48 time on the 400 ever (!) run by a woman. However, if Bol is able to beat Kratochvilova by 0.42 indoors there should be no reason why she should not be able to do that outdoors (when they step indoor or outdoor, they remain the same athletes...), and 47.99 - 0.42 = .... right. So i think you see my point...

    As of right now, after finishing her book tour, Syd is pushing products on Instagram. She skipped the entire indoor season and there is no word if she is currently training at all. The US Olympic trials are fast approaching, then the Olympics where she stated that she will run the flat 400. Meanwhile Femke said that she will NOT contest the individual flat 400 so in hurdles there will be no Syd/Femke showdown. The way it looks like is that the only way these two ever gonna race against each other is the 4x400 relay where a bunch of other variables will play along with them. I love both athletes, Femke being the favorite. I hope she will run a sub 51.00 this season at some point but without Sydney, she should win the 400 hurdles at the Olympics, barring some injuries.

    For Paris, i think Bol will run in 400m hurdles, 4x400m relay & 4x400m mixed..coz the dutch have the potential winning medals (even gold) in both 4x400m IF Bol in the team..so, Bol DEFINATELY wont run the 400m open coz the schedule from heats to finals for these 4 races is too tight. For SML, i think she just gonna go for 400m hurdles & 400m open. She wont run any of 4x400m..
    So i believed the greatest showdown the world been waiting for WILL happen in 400m hurdles.. 😊😊😊

    I have been following Femke since before she became popular. She is a good sport in recognizing other people's performances. She is my favorite after Sydney whom I watched since she was in high school at the Penn Relays. Sydney went to the Olympics at the age of 16. Femke's history is to be admired. But you can only compare runners in head to head competition.
    Sydney's split in the World Championship was 47.8 in the 4 x 400 relay. Her pb in the flat 400 is 48.74 on her second attempt. She will improve on that since she is getting more training. She is no slouch and she has not been standing still waiting for Femke to catch her. You present a good story, but head to head is the only race that will decide who is best.

    • @ElieWeissenbach-xx1yi
      @ElieWeissenbach-xx1yi หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Euhm... Little fact check. We all know that mrs McLaughlin is (or at least: was) no slouch. However, relay times are not comparable to "normal" 400 times. The reason for this is that in the relay the runner has a "flying start" in the handover zone, and crosses the "startline" of her 400 leg already at speed.. Furthermore the anchorrunner does not need to hand over at the end, so she has a big advantage... Reality is that untill now McLaughlin has not shown very much on the 400 m flat. With her PB of 48.74 she is only nr.5. in the world on the combined list of IAF scores indoor and outdoor, with 1257 IAF points, versus 1272 IAF points for Femke Bol for her Indoor World Record of 49.17 which is a shared nr.1. with Shaunae Miller Uibo for her 48.36 outdoor PB. So, it is time for mrs McLaughlin to step up and start delivering some actual performances! But I am afraid that that will not happen before the Paris Olympics...

    I love Femke, but she still has a long way to go to get to 50.68 and, like Femke, Sydney is just as young and also still on an upward trajectory. Obviously Sydney had a difficult season last year due to injury, but, if she can stay fit, it is difficult to see har getting beaten in the hurdles or on the flat, once she has gained a little more experience in that event. Either way, hopefully they can both have a great season and stay healthy, so we get to see them compete together again.

      All this years Bol has been improving more than McLaughlin, it will continue this way

    • @rientsdijkstra4266
      @rientsdijkstra4266 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Mrs McLaughlin is still the best in the world on the 400 m Hurdles, as Bol herself readily admits at every occasion. And that 50.68 of McLaughlin which is still 0.77 below Bol's PB is fantastic of course. However, there are a few things to remember. Many people point to the fact that Bol is only a half year younger than McLaughlin. But that is not the most relevant fact here. Much more relevant is the number of years of training they have each done, and in that respect McLaughlin is much further ahead in her carreer because she started hurdling at an earlier age, and also McLaughlin switched to the 14 step stride much earlier. In that sense McLaughlin is further into her "development curve" than Bol, but that also implies that Bol has more "headroom" left for further development than McLaughlin. In that respect there are few interesting facts to point out. Bol switched to the 14 step stride (which is a big technical change, because you jump alternating lead legs) only in the winter of 2022 to 2023, yet only 7 months later, while her technique was still shaky she already ran the 3d fastest time EVER with that 51.45 in London - an improvement by 0.85 -, which by the way also was only 0.04 slower than McLaughlins 2nd best time, 51.41. Furthermore that 51.45 would have won Gold in the Tokyo Olympics... And that while she was using the 14 step only for half a year, and she still had a lot of work to do on perfecting it... So, it indeed is to be expected that mrs McLaughling is also improving and growing, but alas we have no information about that because she never races... So for as far as I can see for now any outcome is possible.
