    The little light looks like an alarm system indicator. It would make sense to have it close to the door so that it would let someone know that they would only have limited time to get to the alarm panel before some form of siren would sound.

    • @AndyPipkinOfficial
      @AndyPipkinOfficial ปีที่แล้ว +9

      you beat me to it lol defo think its an alarm indicator if you think of all the value that it used to hold (race car, tools and parts) it makes alot of scence

    • @CCharlesHahn
      @CCharlesHahn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed; my immediate thought was since the trailer had a 12V power system they might've used a car alarm on the trailer (thinking something akin to Viper/Compustar/Clifford) and those almost always had a flashing red light to mount on the dashboard indicating the system was armed.

    • @techbilldeaf
      @techbilldeaf ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. In 80’s small red led are used for alarm to alert time they have to disarm it and as a deterrent to thief since often it blinks when armed.

    • @nsanefire1
      @nsanefire1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. Light is probably an external indicator to let one know that the door is locked and secure. I would tend to think it's factory but would take a much closer look to find out for sure.

    It may be nothing, but I have just been watching the first Back to the Future and at after 20 minutes the Dr driver the Delorian out of his truck (before it goes back to 1955) which has fold down ramps like the flag trailer. In this section of the film you can see through the side door the winch system that was used for the ramps. Being it was also made by Universal maybe the systems are similar on both vehicles.

    Sorry to keep bugging you with this question. Did you ever get a chance to check the back of the trailer for the remains of the six metal tabs which were added to the left side for "The Wrong Crowd" hijacking stunt. The tabs that the stuntman used as foot-holds as he was climbing the pipe. In a video that you made three months ago, "KITT's Tire Tracks in the Trailer? Removing Ceiling Panels & Flooring in the Knight Rider Dorsey!" You were noticing weld marks on the left side of the back of the trailer. I believe that these correspond to those tabs.

    Another scene where they used a non-Jump Car for a jump(though an abridged one) that pops in my head was in "Trust Doesn't Rust." IIRC, they used the original General Purpose Stunt Car for that one, though I believe that was more of a light leap, as you guys pointed out it landed on what looks like an offscreen ramp.

    Funny enough, I watched 'Any which way you can' last night, and I noticed that at the beginning where the big rig is following cops on bikes to a Philo Beddow fight, then it blows its air horns, and the driver says 'sorry officer, my hand must of slipped', that was a GMC General, and it also had a sleeper cab fitted, as well as that Wilson in that movie was also in a KR episode, as well as the Hells Angels bike gang leader who was also in the Pilot episode.........small world isn't it LOL

Also want to make the Smokey and bandit trailer which is similar, so make all three at the same time. Found out I have three KITT models. The Ford car carrier will also get done. Hopefully sometime later this year.

    Junk Yard Dog has to be one of my favorite episodes.
    KITT loses it and has to deal with character growth and development.
    He has to gain back his confidence after losing a battle and his bruised
    and hurt self-image of him being invincible. Michael having to will KITT back.
    I love the Primer KITT. That would probably be MY personal KITT if I ever owned one.

  • @greggv8

    I know you want to preserve as much original metal as possible but that rear panel will be so much easier to do, and to make look good, if you remove all of the remains at the bottom where it was cut down. Cut it out, use it as a template for the light positions, and thank it for being there to Guide* the way to restoring the tail lights. A single piece of new metal won't have all the warping that butt welding a new piece to the old piece will have.
    If the door popper used a gas cartridge it would be more practical to fit it with an air cylinder, tapped into the brake air supply. Who wants to have to climb up there time after time replacing a C02 cartridge? It would go with dressing the interior as close as possible to the stage set. Making "TV Magic" actually work like how it *looked like it worked* in the show.
    *Assuming Dorsey used Guide brand lights.

    Considering the value of both drag cars and boats, which this trailer hauled, it's highly likely that it's a security alarm indicator it more then likely blinked to warn anyone about to mess with it when parked that there was alarm on the trailer, a little more b searching, and you might find a hole where there may have been a key switch that controlled it or it may have had a remote...

    The little light near the side door is likely a post-Knight Rider modification, and wasn't there for the show. As for the rear door popper, instead of a pressurized gas ram (could be dangerous, and would require expensive co2 cartridges, or nitrogen/compressed air plumbing that could always fail, even though the tractor could easily supply compressed air for the trailer brakes) maybe an electric linear actuator would be a more elegant solution that would be easily repeatable, and more gently push the door open with a slowly applied force, instead of a blast of force that a pressurized gas popper would apply to the door...

    I can afford to donate to the restoration myself but I'm sure just watching these videos help... I got a suggestion, I think whenever you decided to do the plaque of the names, I think the best place for it would be on the inside of the side door, as it's never opened in the show so you don't know what it looks like on the inside, and if you take it to event's or shows, whatever for people to see and enjoy, well how are the people going to get inside to see? Are they going to walk up the ramp? No they're probably going to go in the side door with some steps for the show, so it will be the 1st thing they will see, and that would be something special.

    My guess is that there was almost a vacuum due to the effect of air coming over the top of the trailer, and the popper was a later addition after many problems filming moving scenes. My guess is that the door wouldn't move at all, or there was so much slack on the cables by the time that it moved that it jerked hard when it fell.

    Could you bring in one or two of the original crew to walk you through the trailer setup ?

    When you fabricate the replacement for the rear of the trailer, are you better to use a section from another trailer rather than fabricate. I assume if a roller door is reinstated you will want the latch that it connects to which is a recessed pin in the floor for the hook on the door to catch. Using a section of an old trailer will also blend in better than using new steel to fill the gap. Good luck anyway regardless how you approach it.

      We'd certainly consider it, the problem is finding a Dorsey from that era WITH a roll up door. The few Dorseys we've found have a swing style door, and that whole panel is totally different. When we are done, you won't be able to tell old vs new metal! It all gets covered with diamond plate anyways.
