    The yellow on the trailer was primer. Dupont automotive paint, part numbers 615\616s Variprime. It was a metal etching primer and needed to condition bare metal before topcoating with a paint color such as the knight rider black. Dupont Variprime was a bright yellow, it provided excellent adehison to bare metal, for a top color layer like Imron as used in Commercial applications.

      That's what I thought but then in the close ups of the snap locations it's very clear the yellow is on top of who knows how many layers of other paint. The snaps protected little islands of layers of paint when it was soda blasted after Knight Rider.

      I was glancing at the snap location as I went by a caution sign on the road. It looks to me like high visability yellow. I dont know for sure. I mean you filmed ut with your camera, processed it through your network uploading to TH-cam streamed across my network to my phone. The color could wasily be brighter or more orange. But it reminded me of that California DOT hi-viz yellow.

    Thank you for this update video, I made a discovery today. There is a knightrider street in London near ST Pauls cathedral. I did a little digging thinking it must have been named since the show but the name dates back to the 14th century. I know it's not linked to the show but thought you'd like to know anyway.

    Hello Joe! I have worked for Constantin films, a movie production company here in germany and they gave me an assignment to paint and colorring some cars they need for a german tv show. They wanted me to pre paint their Cars in light yellow first and then i should paint them in darkblue. The reason for this was, that on their cameras they used to film with, the darkblue paint was very very dark. But if you stand in front of the paintjob in real, it was not that dark. So they wanted me put an light paint under the darkblue paint and on camera then, the paint looked brighter and almost as it was in reallife.
    Maybe the producers of Knight Rider had the same problem because of the golden stribes?

    • @greggv8
      @greggv8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some paints aren't super opaque and the color and darkness of the primer can affect the look of the paint. It's a big problem with yellows, oranges, and reds. When I repainted the hatch spoiler on a red 2009 Toyota Prius I had to test with three different primers before I was able to get a close enough match on the red.
      Putting a yellow primer under blue paint should give it a greenish hue, if the blue isn't 100% opaque.

    Interesting find with the yellow paint. I totally agree with Dan D on this one. The Yellow paint was probably the Vari-Prime Dupont primer which was widely used on unfinished bare metal in that time period. I am employed at a large Auto Part store chain which deals with automotive paint. Before the introduction of urethanes and waterborne paints Dupont's Veri-Prime was the answer for metal etching primer. It also was the go-to primer for aluminum and stainless steel as well. The Veri-Prime was a very bright yellow and that was the only color it came in. With the knowledge of paint that I have I can tell you that Dan D is 100% spot on with his theory. I hope this information is helpful to you. Good Luck.

There is an alternative building bricks company in Germany called bluebrixx, they already have a much smaller version of the semi and KITT and also a 1/18 scale KITT…they just call it „americanischer truck & black herocar“ and „schwarzes Heldenfahrzeug“. I do not think that the yellow paint is pre knight rider. The snaps were not visible in the show and the main body was media blasted after the truck was sold for the second time prior to the rear tail light panel being cut up. If it was pre show, the snaps would be seen in shots and after the first private sale, they would have the black paint on top of the yellow. This was more than likely someone who painted the truck after the first sale in their racing team colors and then the truck was blasted (with the snaps still attached) and repainted white for resale to another team.

    Joe I wouldn't worry too much about preserving the original piece in this area of the trailer. Documenting the find would serve. Your gonna need the structure to make its ability to load and unload the car, support the ramp, and making sure the trailer is structurally sound should take priority. Most of the original features have been lost to time and will not be reusable in their present state, these details will become irrelevant to making this piece of TV history reliable and functional. If you were to ask Adam Savage about the inner workings of TV props, he would probably say it was done on a budget, in the most efficient manner possible, because at the end of the day it needed to work for 5 to 15 min of camera time, nobody was going to see it, and once it was filmed it was abandoned until it was needed again. You need it to work every time without failure, for much longer than a couple 30 second shots.

    I like the remade battery box, but it's funny to think that from Bonnie and Devin's point of view, that the high tech trailer could be disabled by a bad guy simply removing two battery cables in an exposed box! 🤣

    I'm wondering if that yellow is the anti-corrosion primer, assuming the skin of the trailer is aluminum. It looks like the same stuff that they use on airplanes before the final coat.

    a stick on reflector.. in the 1980s? on a trailer of all things? sure it's not the exact same thing but with filled in old screwholes somewhere? people had barely just invented stickytape back then :P let alone doublesided stickytape capable of holding a reflector in place outside for years. reflectors come in pretty much the exact same shapes with and without screwholes.

    Thinking the Trailer was painted Bright yellow as the first coat, then they applied the black. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the trailer striped Black and Yellow at one point in the show?
