    I would refinish the Dorsey logo to original there comes a point where preserving everything "original" is going to start taking away from the finished restoration

      I agree, at some point it does take away from the restoration.

      If it were my choice, I would never restore it to begin with. That's a whole lot of history they are stripping away there to put new parts on. Preservation over restoration for me.

    As someone who works with Hollywood from time to time. I get a unique perspective on how things are done. Usually very last minute, and the effect needs to just barely work for the take. Very little effort goes into quality. I am reminded of this by the bent bolt. I would consider doing something different for the ramp lift system than what was there for a couple of reasons. #1 The original system will take up a lot of real estate with the bulk head. Making it harder to fit your set inside and keeping the dimensions close. #2 Based on what you have said before about how the ramp weight and how it was rigged up. I see a lot of potential problems with that breaking down. Especially when it is not convenient. You could design something more reliable and still have it look the same. Just some thoughts. Cheers.

      I've written comments that what would be good is to make the ramp work like it appeared to work on the show, not how it actually worked, especially since they're compressing the width of the interior set to build it inside the trailer. It shouldn't be difficult to have the ramp extensions go in and out in a controlled manner, and have rollers automatically lower from the underside of the ramp extensions. Even if they never load or unload the car while moving the truck, the rollers will keep the ends of the ramp extensions from grinding across the ground from movement of the trailer suspension and tire compression while KITT is run in and out.
      If they could come up with all the details of how the trailer was modified for the show, and weren't building the interior set inside, that's when trying to stick to exactly how it was modified for the show would be ideal. But even then it would need some alterations for durability and safety due to weaknesses pointed out in this video.

    If someone hasn't already suggested it, you should take that big panel you have to pull out and use cut-outs from it to fill the smaller holes around the rest of the trailer, so it's still "original panelling" used in the repairs. Just a thought.

    Awesome work Joe and Eric! It's really coming along nicely! It was really great to see Eric on the channel again as well. I feel your pain on the Dorsey Emblem Original Paint issue as well as the front panel. It's a tough decision as to whether or not to remove anything original. IMO, I think restoring the Dorsey Emblem to like new is a good idea. There didn't seem to be that much original paint left there to preserve and from what I saw, it didn't look in too great of shape so it would be kind of an eye sore. So it would be a small sacrifice I think. The panel on the other hand, I really hate to see it go but, as you pointed out I believe it's necessary. However, that doesn't mean it cant still be used in some way. Could it be used in the interior in some way? Perhaps even for the Engraved Name Plate as a backdrop or even a cover plate or something? Could it be left in place and simply covered over or would that leave a noticeable imperfection? Dunno, if all else fails, it would certainly have a home as a museum piece for the KRH collection. I don't think I like the idea of it being cut up or anything and given out to fans for he simple reason of it eventually being lost to history. There's no way to know how the pieces would be treated and as time goes on, how can you verify that pieces are genuine? I'd have to give that some more thought but, my instincts tell me that it should stay with y'all.

  • @greggv8
    @greggv8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Take the panel off the front and have KITT shapes cut out of it on a water jet. Then come up with a durable way to mark and number them as pieces taken from the trailer. Definitely a limited edition unable to be duplicated.

    What is the frame of the trailer made from? Just curious as if its alloy panels against steel frame, the two being in contact would cause elecotrolytic corrosion (looks like white powdery rust, but on aluminium) - when I've been helping others restore vintage buses in the past, we've always had to put
    a barrier substance between the two to prevent this.

    Just an observation. While Ive only installed solid steel rivets, not aluminum ones, but with iron/steel rivets usually the rivet gun is hammering the stem forming the second head and the static bucking bar is against the manufactured head. Or sometimes you will double gun the larger iron/steel rivets, because of the amount of material that needs to be moved before it cools off. Keep up the great work.

    Looks so much better now that the window has fully gone, yeah that panel where the Aircon/window was definitely needs to be replaced. The Dorsey plaque I think should be fully restored without those black paint overspray marks...but if there's someway of maybe coating the lettering without removing the black so that it's still there but protected? I don't know it's a tough one as you kind of want both ...is there a way to say use the original plate to make a molding in order to cast a new plaque to go up on the semi and then the original plate could be kept as is for archival purposes?

    Even though i was fully onboard with your decisions regarding the restoration so far, I have to disagree with your choice to install the patch panel over the original piece. I understand you try to preserve as much as possible, but to me it just takes away from the screen accuracy. If you completely replaced the affected panels instead, the result would be a lot closer to its screen used condition, which i believe is the goal of this project.
    In addition, since the panel was modified AFTER the show and no special markings are present, it should not affect the "authenticity" that much, especially when compared to the authentic look of the final outcome. That being said, i am very excited to have discovered your channel and keep up the great work!

  • @Scott-hb1xn

    One hint for mounting and riveting panels- CLECOs. You can get them from any aircraft tool supply. They are wonderful... Also, be sure your rivet set in the gun is SQUARE to the work, as well as the bucking bar... I taught this for four years... Otherwise your rivets will come out clinched, offset, etc. and will be weaker, as well as give them and the metal "smilies" when they don't strike squarely...
