- In this video, I remove and install new front wheel bearings on a 2008 Honda Civic. I use a loan tool from O'Reilly Auto Parts to complete the job. This single tool enabled me to remove the hub & wheel bearing then install the wheel bearing and hub.
This was my first time completing this job and it was more challenging than anticipated. However, with the correct tools you can get the job done yourself.
In full disclosure, I took the spindle assembly on the passenger side to a shop to have the bearing and hub pressed in. I had trouble driving the bearing in uniformly & destroyed it in the process. Not wanting to repeat that $100 problem, I spent $50 to have a shop safely and squarely press in a new bearing and hub.
I do believe the loan tool enables you to install the bearing safely and correctly (as was the case on the driver side), but I also think the circular motion of the drive washers can put unequal pressure on the bearing which can cause damage.

When removing bearing use a propane torch to heat knuckle, not red hot but @ 200F - 250F while applying pressure to bearing. Tapping on knuckle with hammer while there is pressure on the bearing also can help.
When installing the bearing, clean up the bearing bore but DON'T use grease, apply a light coating of oil and put the bearing and hub in the freezer for and hour or so before installing.
Done a ton of these bearing and I always do the above to make the job faster and easier.

Why no grease?
@@balkee42 hydraulic presser from grease might keep bearing for seating square on the seat, also the metal to metal friction (and rust) will keep the bearing race from spinning in the bore

Good job. One tip though, don't put grease on the surface prior to installing the new bearing. And make sure the bearing is straight before pressing. Going in crooked can warp the bearing and it'll wear out prematurely
Hello. Yes, having the bearing straight was the biggest challenge as you saw. I think in the future (if I ever do this again) I’ll be going the safe route and pressing the bearings on with the hub off. Less chance of expensive errors that way. Thanks for the suggestions 👍 much appreciated.

@@FastFixTH-cam I think you did everything perfect, except for just tap the bearing in straight with a hammer too start lucky with the first as you said it started crooked but the impact straightened it out. On the other side it sounds like you weren't as lucky I think everything else was absolutely correct!!!

If you’re referring to the bearing puller and installer, I would rent it from an auto parts store. I rented mine from O’Rileys. I’m sure you can buy it, but if you’re not using it often, renting for free is the way to go 👍

In my area, Autozone and Orielys loaner kits were $270-$340. Once returned, they refund it, but it can take up to 3 weeks for your card to be reimbursed. The loaners were never available so I got mine at Harbor Freight. Kinda scary to replace bearings, but I’d rather fit than spend $3k for mechanic to do it.

Next tip: Put the wheel bearing and hub in the freezer - it will definitely make your job easier and protects the bearing on installation

Sure thing! If you’ve never done this before, just remember that it will take some time and and will likely be challenging. As you saw in the video, I buckled and had a shop press in the driver side bearing. Sometimes you have to meet defeat and shake hands. Best of luck! Oh, and remember to orient the bearing correctly. One end is magnetic and if put in wrong, the ABS system will not function. Feel free to let me know how it goes.

Got the tool and removed the old hub and bearing. Then messed up on the install. I might try again with another kit or last resort the shop...
Use lots of penetrating oil. Also on my 08 civic while pulling the hub. I discovered that you need to clock the tool so that it rest or sits on the three bolts ( screws ) that hold on the backing plate. It maybe easier to just do it the old school way. Take the spindle off and use a press. Hard for me to tell because the O'Reilly's tool was worn out and hammered.
Right. And after thinking about the repair, I came to the same conclusion. Can do yourself, but a press is best. It’s just more accurate and easier. Sucks that the tool you used was worn out. Mine was brand new, so I suppose I got lucky.

We did the rear bearings / hubs on our '03 Forester we bought last spring that needed to have the bearings replaced. We had 'em pressed out at a shop (they were growling gremlins) because they were so badly seized.
During the install, we re-attached the struts onto the knuckles to give us some leverage with using socket / open ended wrenches. Did you mark the camber bolt for the front-end alignment..? We learned that from someone else's video. 😊
Today, we're using the O'Reilly tool on the front end bearings (proactively) to avoid bearing failure.

Nice video. Better to use the loan tool and impact guns if you have them. Only use skip using air tools if you don't have them. If you do, why not?

What’s the “thing” that you’re referring to exactly.
Before pressing the bearing square it up to the hole. Use the old bearing on top of the new one, and tap the old bearing gently with a hammer until the X and Y axis all measure the same.

TIP:
Next time lightly lubricate the tool's screw, lock nuts and washers that come in contact with the spacers. Keep in mind that steel rubbing against steel causes HEAT that will bind/seize components of the tool.
Hello. maybe I didn’t show in the video, but I was lubricating with WD-40. But yes, good call out and suggestion! Although a rental, I prefer to give the tools back in the same condition I got it, so I generally treat them with care. I appreciate the comment 👍
@@FastFixTH-camI highly suggest to use a thick grease like high pressure wheel bearing grease. WD-40 is NOT a lubricant. Yes it has oil in it, but that oil isn't meant for high pressure applications like this. WD-40 literally means "Water Displacement formula #40". The solvents in it are meant to displace water on metal and the oil is meant to protect the metal.

this tool is working wrong for me i have it set up identical but it pushes the hub puller back rather than forward to pull off the hub

@@FastFixTH-cam the tool ended up being completely ruined before i got it i swapped it for another and got the hub out i’m having a hard time getting the bearing out though but i did get it to move about a half inch i’m gonna try a torch tomorrow

If you have problems just stack the old wheel bearings after emptying them and that will multiply the force, A word to the wise I had the same problem with it going in unevenly but it didn’t break because I used the old wheel bearing or other recycled parts as buffers between the contact points where the kit touches your new wheel bearing sorry that happened to you man I wasted some money too.Watch the end that Contacts your new wheel bearing so it doesn’t pass the edge because if it does you’re done

@@FastFixTH-cam You still saved a ton doing the work yourself, plus now you have knowledge to recycle next time. I am new to, it helped me to find a pirated copy of my service manual online it makes a big difference. The manual recommends using the old part, tells you how to Orient the ball bearing, And even has good troubleshooting that you would be searching for on TH-cam. Cheers bro

Hmm, interesting! Please let me know that works for you. Curious to see how advantageous that might be. I’d assume any shrinkage on the bearing would help massively.
ATG & I have noticed that many crooks that can't get your cat with will use impact on your wheel lug nuts.
So basically a $5.00 bolt is going to cost you a $400 to $600 job at the shops by doing this same steps.
And you think Honda knows how to design cars.
Try knocking out the snapped wheel lug bolt & put one in then you will know what I am talking about.

I feel like it was necessary. That little fucker wasn’t not coming out in one piece. Luckily, those parts are stocked at parts stores because they get broken a lot. The civic wasn’t that rusty at all for its age and mileage IMO. I’ve seen waaaay worse.
@@FastFixTH-cam lol, not knocking it, I’m literally mid fix in my Hyundai Accent watching different videos each break to make sure. First time doing it, just got bearing out after finding a special sized cup the oreilly kit didn’t have. Wish me luck on the pressing!

Ha! You clearly don’t know anything. The speed sensors break all the time. That’s why they’re readily available at the parts store. I assume you don’t have any relevant experience in mechanics.
