You both have a lot of wisdom at such a young age. I admire how you're both learning through the ups and downs of marriage in order to produce a healthy long term marriage. Interestingly, you both remind me of my wife and I when we were first married 40 years ago! I can say you're both are giving solid and practical advice!
I think the "first year of marriage" assumption is more likely than not. In the military we described the formation of any team as going through three phases: Forming, Storming, and Norming. You "form" your team during the engagement (at least I hope you do!), which is when you get to know each other and begin to explore the strengths that each person brings to the team. And then the first year of marriage is the "storming" phase where you all scrape off some rough edges and modify your behaviors and expectations to create the space everyone needs to function most efficiently. And then after that you settle into a functional routine ("norming") that allows the team to work smoothly together (generally) and succeed. So yes, I think, even having been through a marriage where it really wasn't all the bad our first year, that this would still tend to be my expectation for the first year of most marriages.
I love the calmness and peace you have within yourselves that shine from you. It's just so refreshing to see. I just recently found your podcast and listening to multiple episodes every morning. I am like tori where I wanna feel secure before going to bed but my SO cant process properly if it's late at night. I’ve only had male best friends, never any female friends and it can work if you’re truly just friends. A lot of people think it’s weird but it’s only weird if you make it that way. My boyfriends and fiancé never had an issue with it…it says that the man trusts you and that’s attractive.
