The swirl blades are connected to respective actuators by two rods which by their travels set a voltagel to the ecm.If this voltage is wrong they set an error code on both bank and a service engine light comes on.Usually you need to delete both actuators signal on the ecm to delete the swirl blades... did you delete the actuators on ecm?

Yes, the current flash on this ecu disabled them.

What flash tool did you use for the tune

If you are interested in disabling the swirl flaps or getting a tune, I would highly recommend Malone. They have great customer service, and everything runs smoothly. Of course, make sure anything you do is legal where you live 😀

Is there any concern of the heat affecting the aluminium intake pipe.

I've never worried much about it. It's a large enough piece of aluminum that it would take a long time to get it hot enough to melt or deform. When I did my Jetta's 1.9L intake manifold, it was 10x as dirty and took way longer with no issues.

    Bolt for belt cover?

It snaps over little dick shaped things. No bolt.

Did you notice any difference in fuel economy or performance?

Any differences are from the ecu remap. Removing these without that won't really do much. Really, the swirl flaps in these engines don't commonly fail, but the linkages between the flaps and the actuators wear out and throw codes. My reasoning to remove was to both clean up the intake and have 1 less thing to deal with in the future. With the remap, it's a little quicker, and about 1-3 more mpg.
