The laptop power supply is not usually 12V, it is usually 18V-20V, that would make it alone around 60W@3A The 12V@2A is 24W for a total of 84W consumed/dissipated.
I was going to experiment with a alternator, similarly, ibgot a brushed DC motor controller, PWM, to connect to the brushes, to vary the strenth of the magnetic field, and keep the coil cooler. I think the coil is ment to be pulsed in normal operation. To regulate output, I have heard it is most effiecent with about 3 vdc on the rotor coil. Great video..
As a motor the efficiency depends on rpm, at low rpm the max voltage you can get without saturating will give you the highest output power, as rpms rise you want to drop the power to the field to reduce back emf and give more efficiency at higher rpm. For example at full 12v you may only have 2500 rpm max , it if you drop the field voltage to 5 volts it's possible you might get closer to 3-4000 rpm with the same controller. Pulsed dc to the field would be less effective, yes it can handle it but that's simply because that's what old style regulators used to use to regulate power (basically a relay that would turn off the field when the battery charge voltage was reached and turn the field coil back on when the voltage dropped to low for battery charging) but using a consistent voltage to the field would be more efficient, you just need different electronics than a relay.
Im still learning about electric. Can someone tell me what the limits are to an alternator? Ive heard 1500 watts or so. Ive got a 3g ford alternator rated 12v and 130 amps which is a little over 1500 watts. I saw a guy who ran his at 48v. He was using around a 1500w controller. Assuming he had a 130 amp alternator, would that mean hes running 130/48...2.7amps? This is what is confusing
thanks very much. so how will the battery be charging as it is powering the alternator. can both the speed controller and the feed winding be connected together
does it mather what side you rotate alternator ? In some old tractor designs here in Europ comonly Delco and Bosch have capacitors on them if those capacitors fail the alternator does not charge baterry they also have another problem there exist left side and right side turning pulleys if wrong alternator is buyed also baterry dead empty. So how to modifi such alternator and how determine in what direction it shuld spin and if you be acident buy wrong turning direction alternator how correct that mistake can the brushes be swaped or does it need to be swaped wires on the bridge rectifier as well. There is lot confusion about that thing .
Can you guide me through purchasing the correct motor controller equipment to operate that alternator at it's full potential of close to 150 amps ? That would be great.
Hi! I did some digging. 38 Amps is the max that is available in the no hall type.Perhaps if the a 24v volt or 48v alternator is available then the required current will decrease automatically. You won't see Maximum amps, current draw until the motor shaft is loaded. Maximum torque will be with the motor stalled. Hook it up to a dyno to measure HP and Torque. you could use a generator as a dyno to measure watts and then times by 1.34 to get HP @rpm with a tachometer rpm reading.
I got a RC BEC 30A speed controller connected to an alternator hooked to a car battery. The alternator spinned very slow for about 5 sec and stopped. Can reactivate but it repeats it's 5sec cycle. Any idea what went wrong.
You're probably using a sensorless controller built for smaller BLDC motors. What's happening is that the switching frequency is so high that it skips over most windings, resulting in poor performance. And it's shutting down as it's not recieving proper feedback from the other phases as it's too fast. Either make or buy a sensored driver circuit. It would have extremely low torque and would need turning over to "sync".
Hello i have opened and alternator but i have 6 terminals coming out of the coil all with 2 terminals i really do not know which three i have to use can you help pls
Hi I have a question,: why 3 wires if is DC? can you explain? also can you tell us the model of the controller you are using? thank you and best regards
It's pulsed dc timed between those three wires based on the phase angle of the rotor. It would be more efficient to use 3 phase ac because the windings overlap, in an alternator the windings overlap while in a bldc the windings don't overlap. This is why in an alternator the output is a sinusoidal wave form while in a bldc the output (back emf) is trapezoidal (basically pulsed dc).
i have zs-x11B module (with hall sensor connection) i want to use it to run bldc motor without hall sensor (alternator car modification) but not running. please teach me how to do that the bldc motor without hall sensor can spin using the zx-x11b module with hall sensor connection.

If you can find a way to attach the motor and pulley then absolutely. As long as the blade isn't too big and you don't cut too big of lumber it should work just fine.
There's no way you're using this on 120 or 240V AC. First, the US power system only has two phases and a neutral. These phases are 180 degrees out of phase. An alternator is for low voltage only. You need a 3-phase driver circuit and a big 3-phase step down transformer to use. Just use an induction motor made for the job..
The force when the rotor turns. Try to hold onto a rotor with your hands when it is turning, and try to stop it with your hands from turning. If the torque is low, your hands can easily stop the rotor from rotating. If the torque is high, your hands will not stop the rotor from turning.
The field voltage depends on the room range that you want. Lower rpm and higher torque means higher field voltage (8-14 volts) while if you want higher rpm and don't need as much torque you can use a lower field voltage (4-7 volts). I usually use a bldc controller (esc) with a BEC. That stands for battery eliminator circuit, it provides about 5 volts which is a good number for general purpose projects using an alternator as a motor.
@@mmk4854 yes, there's tons of videos on TH-cam of people putting them in ebikes and go carts and the like. depending on the alternator you can get over 20 horsepower out of it as long as you have a good enough controller.

Good morning
Use the output rectifiers for field supply. This does two things for you variable field strength and no power loss when the motor is not being driven.
The field coil should be voltage adjusted based on rpm, between 5-12 volts depending on if it's running at low rpm or high rpm.
The laptop power supply is not usually 12V, it is usually 18V-20V, that would make it alone around 60W@3A
The 12V@2A is 24W for a total of 84W consumed/dissipated.
