One little suggestion … ball up a hand towel and put it under the hat while it’s drying. Helps keep the shape and also absorbs some of the water.
That's what I do as well. It works like a charm. When you remove the towel you can feel all of the moisture it extracted from the hat.

If it is an unstructured hat, wear it while it is still damp so it forms to your head.

It’s people like you that make this world a better place. I’m glad I found your video. I followed it step by step. My hat had some bad sweat stains but I didn’t pre-treat with a stain remover. My hat is air-drying now. We’ll see how it turns out! Thank you again for the great video!

I've tried SHAMPOO, DAWN DISH SOAP, OXY CLEAN LIQUID.
With a TOOTH BRUSH, SCRUB BRUSH, MY FINGERS.
With COLD, WARM and HOT WATER !
why use the dishwasher and not like... a regular clothes washer

Thanks for the video Andrea. I wear a hat to work 12+ hours and I usually just throw them in the washing machine; however, we all know how well that works out. I'm going to try your method today.
Tried this on my favorite hat. I wear it every time I go to culinary class, so the chef has a heavy emphasis on safety and sanitation. Gotta say this video worked out. My hat’s now free of stains for the moment. Thx

Thanks for this! I am definately going to be using this method. I did notice that sometimes the hat tag will tell you if it should be washed with warm or cold water. My White hat says "hand wash cold" so just be aware of that.

In the past I used large peach cans that fit the hat near perfect for drying.
Lately I use the large plastic Folgers coffee cans as a drying rack/form.

How effective is this method? I tried just soaking it all free clear but that didn’t get the stains out. Might need to invest in oxiclean and try again

Just watched the video and then launched into the project full steam ahead! Worked on six of my husband’s caps and boy oh boy, they were so dirty. Drying now on a towel. He hasn’t noticed yet😉

I did this method, 5-10 times until the water wasn’t brown anymore… worked great gotta love dawn dish soap & hot water.

thanks for this! just saved $30 cleaning my hat instead of buying a new one. now i dont have to look so dirty with sweat stains during baseball practice
You can also soak it in soap water for like an hour and then brush the stains. I would also recommend drying it in the sun instead of your home because next time you sweat in it it's gonna smell.

Hi liked your video very much.. One question.. How do you soften the sweat band area around the forehead because I keep having this problem with all my caps. Its very stiff and hurts when I wear my caps/hats.

Dawn is the best soap, fast orange smells good and feels nice but nothing gets grease off of things like dawn.

My mom used to use a margarine container or small coffee can to help cap keep its shape while drying, depends on shape of cap /person's head. Just an 'old school' suggestion.

So, do you HAVE to apply Shout or Oxy Clean before washing in Dawn soap and warm water? Also, what if I don't have a brush like the green one you used in this video?
For sweat marks around the hat do you have to scrub those stains out with oxi clean as well?
Won’t completely soaking the hat ruin the bill of the hat? I’ve been trying to do this but the bills keep getting warped . Any tips for that?

I go the simple route, half cup of lukewarm water, couple drops dawn dish soap and the soft yellow side of a dish scrub (not the rough green side). Scrub lightly in circular motion. I make sure not to soak the hat with water, just enough to damp it a bit and get the stains out. Air dry over night, never under the sun and thats that. 👌🏼
Just did that and it fucking sucks. You clearly don't have any white hats cause mine has a white patch and when I tried scrubbing lightly in a circular motion on the sweat it just spread dark all around. Now my patch has a huge dark portion.

@@chrisalertaalpha4291 Caps are expensive , but no solution to cleaning them and maintaining the shape, even steaming them over a kettle doesnt work!

I also use a sauce pan to keep shape while drying on some hats.
I bought this protective cage thing that holds 1 hat to be throw in the dishwasher (I use my washing machine) and it worked okay but it got crazy one day and damaged the cage as well as the inside of my washing machine so I haven’t been able to wash my hats. My friend told me he cleans it with a brush like this video so I’ll have to try it. I have 20+ hats that need washing and I can’t do with washing 1 hat at a time.

I've always worn company hats at work to keep my long hair restrained. Where I'm at now, I see a lot of customers, and there is a higher need to maintain a professional appearance. I've never had to wash a hat before, but I will give this a try.
First of all will Lysol cleaner like the can work?
Second of all will any soap work like gain dish soap and can I set it out to dry in the sun since it’s white

My major problem is getting hair oils out of my hats. Even after soaking in Dawn and scrubbing the affected areas with a toothbrush, I get this waxy residue left over that just won't come off. You can't really spot treat as the entire bill and inner headband area is involved. I have yet to find a solution to this problem.
