The same reason why the dirty dishes go into the dishwasher.
The white stuff is the salt from your sweat getting locked into the fabric. It also fades the color. Before you stick them in the dishwasher take a wet paper towel and mash it into that area top and bottom soaking it before you wash them.
Also, when they're drying put an upside down bowl under them so they don't fall when drying

Anyone who's ever been in the military when they had leather boots would know about the salt issues.
Just get a brush. Wash in water and Dawn. Very gentle. Air dry. Done
I do this with my hats but not with fishes in there lol. It's probably fine but something about it feels wrong.
I thought my wife was going to give me some crap about that but she didn't.
I was thinking the same. Haha! I have a few hats so I’ll try it without dishes anyway. Are you using, dishwashing soap? Like those pods or whatever they are, or can you use a different type of cleaner?

Glad to see a video on how to wash baseball caps in the dishwasher. I used to wash my boyfriend's hats that way all the time but I didn't not wash them with dishes, I make sure the dishwasher was empty and I put the hats on the top rack and did a regular cycle with regular Auto dish washing detergent

It’s perfectly fine to wash the hat with dishes. If people think their dishes won’t come out clean simply because a dirty hat or two was in the wash, then you must have a broken dishwasher fbaf doesn’t work right. Plus, running an entire dishwasher cycle just for a hat or two would be wasteful so I’m glad he did it this way which doesn’t effect the dishes at all. For all the paranoid people in the comments, please enlighten us in what washing a dirty baseball hat with yucky dirty dishes will do wrong to the hat and/or dishes.

The white stuff around the top of your brim is from your sweat. The salt from the sewat discolors the material

Just pulled my hat out of the diwasher 5 min ago, washed for the first time in the dishwasher after watching your video and it is 100 times cleaner than hand washing or washing machine. Cheers

good stuff big sarg. i got hats dating way back to the sand box when i was contracting over younder. im going to try the dishwasher method but hats only wife said NO dish's with hats. hm i use a can/bottle with a rubber band while drying same as when i in in the army.
